Never Before Seen Footage of My Critique Meeting with Kathy L Wheeler

Today, Kathy L Wheeler and I would like to invite you into the world of our Phantom of the Rewrites critique group. Kathy skewered featured me on her blog last week, so now it is my turn for revenge to return the favor.

Below, we share a glimpse of my critique of her upcoming final book in her Cinderella Series, The Price of Scorn – book iv (she writes under Kae Elle Wheeler for historicals, FYI).  The Price of Scorn is a unique and compelling story that tells the tale of Cinderella’s stepmother and how she came to be so evil.  (I mean, come on, you didn’t think she was born evil, did you?)

KLW: Alicia, was good to me on this last round. It was the second pass. So I’m throwing in a few of the ones she shared from Round 1 where she left little humorous comments along the way.

KLW1

KLW: See what I mean?

Alicia: Great. So you’re telling everyone how old I am? (I’d better not complain. Since then, I have turned three and fifty).

KLW: So? It’s still not as old as me. I have to share something. Most everything you’ve noted needs fixing. There’s no conflict with anything you’ve pointed out. It’s irritating at best.
KLW2

KLW:  See what I mean? Why the hell should Hilda care if her father is dead or not? The man was a monster. He killed her mother, leaving Hilda to a fate worse than death.

Alicia: True. I did good, didn’t I?

KLW:  **snicker** I see that the question is not really a question. Just a rhetorical statement. So the next piece I’m sharing is my own smart-alecky piece.

KLW3

Alicia: Ha! I get it now. Wicked, yeah, I saw that once. (With you, actually. Although, I am not a Wicked connoisseur like you are. I am, however, a connoisseur of the wicked. Get it?)

KLW: Yes. Yes… I’m not that slow. Anyhow, as we previously established, I do love a bit of drama. Mostly of the theater variety.

Alicia: I concur. You are most definitely a lover of drama.

KLW: So basically, in conclusion. Alicia is a fabulous critique partner, a bit soft, unlike a more “blunt” me.  I’m not worried though. There will be much more slamming going on in the Martini Club 4 series, I’m pretty sure.

Alicia: Aw, shucks. Thanks! I wish I could be as blunt, maybe there just isn’t as much to be blunt about in yours? You are a fabulous critique partner as well! (Can you feel the love?).

Yes, lots of slamming to come. Dreading it. Looking forward to it!

Thanks, Kae Elle, for giving us a peek at your story before it was all polished and perfect.

Everyone, be sure to check out The Price of Scorn, available later this month (October). If you want to keep updated on Kae Elle’s books, be sure to follow her here…

BlurbDid you ever wonder why Cinderella’s Evil Stepmother was so mean?

Fourteen years after Esmeralda’s marriage to Alessandro, the birth of Pricilla’s son, Jean-Luc, and Prince Charming and Cinderella’s coronation as the King and Queen of Chalmers Kingdom, Hildegard Marit Benegnoir-Simmon-Roche lies upon her deathbed.

Hilda has never forgiven Cinderella for stealing Prince Charming from Esmeralda. But in a story of heartbreak, the sisters learn how tragedy and scorn shaped their mother’s life into the woman she became. The question is: Can the sisters forgive her?

Excerpt:

Even Juliet had not perished by jumping to her death. That particular story tumbling through her mind in that moment sent shudder of terror over her. We are not lovers destined to death, she reassured herself. All she had to do was make it to the pond. Off Papa’s property. Then out of Alsace to the safety of Grenoble; all within the arms of Pierre.

“You,” her father spat. Hilda froze, squeezing her eyes shut. “You are responsible for her rebellious nature.” The menace from the foyer rose like an engulfing blaze poisoning the air.

The breath rushed from Hilda’s body, leaving her shaken. She chanced a glance below. Her father’s large form hovered, a threatening force over her mother’s slight one.

“Léonce, please—” Papa’s meaty fist shot out catching her mother’s chin, cutting her off. Her head snapped back and she fell to the floor in a heap.

Hilda froze, horrified by the sight of her mother’s lifeless body. A deadly silence filled the hall until the front door opened. Sepp stepped in, his shirt in tattered threads.

In his hand he held Hilda’s valise.

Hot summer. Cool water. Dark secrets

Fun fact:

I once spent a week sailing in the North Channel – the location for Heart Shifter. It’s absolutely beautiful!

A few favorite lines:

“Oh, this is nothing,” he said with a chuckle. Putting the pie plate down, he leaned forward and rested his elbows on the counter. “Would you like a piece?”

Mickey J. Corrigan with Tequila Dirty, romantic crime comedy novella

Detective Liam Donell is in trouble when he lets Rita Deltone, a hot chick from the sticks, have her say on a Dusky Beach murder case.

Fun fact:

I wrote the first half of the novella as a short story. It ended with Rita Deltone still “trussed up” in the hospital bed, hitting on the man who is interviewing her. I brought the story to my writing group and they laughed out loud while reading it. But it felt incomplete. So I decided to explore what might happen if the detective on the case untied Rita to give her the chance to prove her innocence. That’s how Liam Donell entered the picture. Although he had been there all along, the silent brooding cop on the case. Observing her. Falling for her.

A few favorite lines:

When he said, “How would you like to make ten K in a single night, no strings attached,” you can’t blame me for sinking into a fake leatherette booth while he fetched us a round. Ten thousand dollars? Might as well be a million. What I could do with that kind of dough. I could change my freaking life.

TWRP Western Historical Romance Novel ON SALE…Loveland by Andrea Downing

A great bargain from Wild Rose Press!!! Check it out and be sure to follow Andrea on her social media sites…

Andrea Downing, Loveland, western historical romance novel

When an English Lady reunites with a Colorado cowboy, will Loveland live up to its name?

Fun fact:

I’ve spent most of my life in England but, in 2008, returned to the city of my birth, New York.  I always had a deep interest in the American west and family vacations were often spent on ranches; to date, my daughter and I have visited about 20 or so throughout the west.  When I returned to America, I was reading a biography of the Jerome sisters; Jenny Jerome was Winston Churchill’s mother, but her sister Clara was married to Moreton Frewen, who owned one of the first ranches on the Powder River in Wyoming.  One thing led to another and my research began into the British in the west.  It turned out there were numerous cattle ranches in the mid to late 1800s owned by British companies, more able to get funds than Americans in the post Civil War years. Most of the Brits who came out were lesser aristocrats, on allowances, or remittances, from their fathers or older brothers who had inherited titles.  This gave rise to the name, ‘remittance man’—and gave me the idea for my book, Loveland.

A favorite line:

“I guess that smart mouth of hers is learning its lesson at last”

Introducing Lobster Cove…a fabulous new series from The Wild Rose Press…

I am thrilled to share the first four stories in the new Lobster Cove series from The Wild Rose Press:

Juelle’s Legacy

Catch Me If You Can

Another Man’s Son

Heavy Netting

I LOVE this series idea. I only wish I had time to write and submit a Lobster Cove story for the series myself. Maybe soon…

In the meantime, I invited the authors to come visit and answer these questions on my blog today:

Was there anything in particular that inspired your idea?

What was it like working on a series where you had to coordinate with other writers?

Was there any part of your story that was taken from real life…that you can tell us about, that is?

Besides the main characters, who is your favorite character in the story and why?

What do you love that most people would find odd?

What do you dislike that most people would find odd?

Check out their answers and their lovely covers, and learn a bit about their characters and what’s going on in Lobster Cove:

Carol Henry with Juelle’s Legacy

Other than I love lobster, and visiting Maine as often as I can to get my fill of lobster along the coast, I found the whole premise of Lobster Cove intriguing. Helping to build a town with interesting characters going about their business was inspiration in itself.

This was the first time I worked on this type of project, and I found working with the other writers fun and inspirational. Having characters I needed to use in my novel fully developed by those writing for the Town of Lobster Cove made the town and people more real to me.

I think there is always a part of someone you know in many of the characters we create. The biggest event in Juelle’s Legacy that was taken from real life, was having to make a decision to remove life support. A sad event, and similar to the decision my mother and I had to make in regards to my father’s death several years ago.

I really enjoyed writing about Eugenia McClintock. Although she causes most of the conflict in Juelle’s life, she is motivated by her childhood and the loss of her loved ones. She has a strong community presence and looks out for the downtrodden. At times I felt as if she was the main character. I had to step back and remember who the story was really about 🙂

I love to listen to a gentle breeze blowing through the trees on a warm autumn day and watch the colored leaves spiral to the ground. My favorite time of year.

I dislike trips that include driving along narrow roads that have mile-long drop offs, especially on the passenger side of the car, and even more especially when there are no guardrails. Riding in a bus on such roads is even more disturbing. And yet, I find myself signing up for excursions that somehow take me over hairpin turns up mountainsides with these types of drop offs.

perf5.000x8.000.indd

Blurb:

After an accident puts Juelle McClintock’s husband, Sebastian, in a coma, she’s left to care for her small daughter on her own—and to deal with the guilt over her plan to divorce him. When Juelle is faced with the decision of whether to remove his life support, her grief-stricken mother-in-law calls her a murderer. Matters become more complicated when Hunter McClintock arrives in town, claiming to be Sebastian’s half-brother.

Hunter McClintock is summoned from Hawaii for the reading of his father’s will—a father he never knew. Despite his qualms of dredging up bitter emotions, he goes to Lobster Cove, Maine, and walks head-first into a hornet’s nest, and a beautiful, sexy, grieving widow who is married to his half-brother.

An unexpected stipulation is revealed at the reading of the Will, and Hunter and Juelle are faced with decisions that will alter their destinies. Will Juelle’s legacy complicate her life further, or lead to the contentment and love she deserves?

Excerpt:

Juelle had all she could do to hold back her own tears. Could she do it? Could she tell the doctors to let her husband go? And if she did, would it be murder, as Eugenia accused? She lowered her head and shut her eyes before her tears could fall. She fisted her hands, and took several deep breaths, swallowed. God, she was tired of holding it all in. She swung away from the scene in front of her, and headed for the door, only to be brought up short by a man standing there as if he’d been gob-struck. The man she’d seen at Mariner’s the night before blocked her exit. Before she could ask why he was here, Eugenia’s gasp drew her attention back to her mother-in-law.

Clasping the back of a chair, the woman looked ready to pass out. Eugenia recovered so fast, Juelle wondered if she had imagined her mother-in-law’s reaction.

“What the hell are you doing here? Get him out of here. He! Is! Not! Family!” Eugenia screeched.

Juelle did a double-take. If she considered Eugenia sounded like a banshee before, with her ear splitting shrieking, her tone now was so venomous it had everyone stopping in their tracks and staring in disbelief. The strange man was the first to recover. He walked into the enclosed room. Juelle recognized the astonishment in his pinched lips, raised eyebrows.

“I am family.” His voice was calm, well modulated, and confident. “Allow me to introduce myself—Hunter McClintock. I assume you know my father?”

Juelle’s mouth dropped open. She couldn’t form a single sane word. Eugenia, however, had no trouble.

“Liar! Hunt McClintock’s only son is lying in that bed.”

Mitzi Pool Bridges with Catch Me if You Can

I don’t really know what inspired this story, but I love a mystery, and I love a strong female character. Catch Me has both.

Coordinating with other writers didn’t sit well with me as I’m a fast writer and having to look up and check to see if everything I wrote was in harmony could get dicey. But it wasn’t as bad as I thought and ended up well.

There was no part of this story taken from real life.

My second fav character after the H/H was Jackie, their daughter. I liked her spunk.

I think what I love that most everyone else hates is to bake cookies. I baked around 170 dozen last Christmas and everyone groaned, then at them like pigs.

Blurb:

Can an FBI agent from the big city find love with a small-town sheriff once he discovers a fifteen-year-old secret?

Excerpt:

He couldn’t be here. Not now. Not ever. He was part of her past. He’d made sure of that.

It took him a minute to get to her. She spent every second willing her heart to still, her anger to subside.

Glenys O’Connell with Another Man’s Son

My musician husband sings an old folk song about a man who marries a wealthy lady instead of the woman he loves. There’s a line: “At night when I go to my bed of slumber, when I turn around to embrace my darling, instead of gold sure tis brass I find.” My mind shifted to the 21st century and I wondered why a modern woman would choose to marry for money – and pregnant, lonely, desperate Kathryn Morgan appeared on my computer screen…..

I’ve never worked on a series before for a publisher, and the Lobster Cove is a special case. Why, you might ask? Well, it’s multi-genre and each book would be capable of standing alone – but they go great together! You could read any of these books out of the published order and still have a full story experience. All the authors taking part in the Lobster Cove authors list worked well together and were generous with their information, so it was comfortable to use Lobster Cove details and characters from other books. Lori Graham was wonderful at keeping us all on track and coordinating the project.

Some of the characters were inspired by people I met while working as a journalist and as a counsellor.

I think it’s hard for any writer to choose a favorite character – we even loved our villains! But I think my favourite in Another Man’s Son would be seven year old Alex Morgan, the character in the title, who struggles to understand why he has been kidnapped and locked away in a dirty old cellar. Why doesn’t his mommy come for him? Why did the Man lie to him? Will the Man hurt him? Will his Daddy come and rescue him, or will he ignore him as he’s done all his life? Poor Alex tugs at my heartstrings.

What do I love that most people would find odd? I’m embarrassed to say that probably a lot of things. Solitude. Painting walls. White wine with orange juice. Perhaps oddest of all, going to the local landfill site (garbage dump)  to watch the bears rummage for fast food…..although that’s entertainment out here where I live 🙂

COVER

BLURB

Kathryn Morgan broke Ben Asher’s heart when he returned from military service in Afghanistan to find she’d married her boss, wealthy banker Ket Morgan Jr.

Ben vowed he’d never return to Lobster Cove but now, seven years later, he is back as an undercover FBI agent sworn to expose the Morgan family’s criminal activities. Will his vow to bring down the notorious Morgans extend to the woman he still loves?

When Kathryn’s son is kidnapped, she is forced to swallow her pride and reveal the secret of another man’s son. Can Ben protect Kathryn and her son from Ket and his sinister friends, or will old hurts and secrets destroy them all?

EXCERPT

Kathryn drew in a sharp breath. How could she possibly explain all this to Ben? What words could she use to convey the nightmare her life had become, the sense of burning shame within her that she’d made this choice? There was no way she could bear to see the contempt in his eyes when he saw how trapped she was, like a fox in a leg trap. But, like that fox, she’d be capable of gnawing off her own leg for the sake of her son. If she had to, she’d bear the humiliation.

“What the hell is wrong with this family?” Ben exploded. “There’s a missing child whose parents are too busy fighting between themselves to co-operate with law enforcement in finding him. Dammit all, Kathryn, it seems neither of you can say for sure the boy is really missing!”

His anger sparked her own. “Don’t you dare talk to me like that, Ben Asher! Especially not now, not when…”

“Not when what, Kathryn?” His voice was gentler and he moved to stand beside her, close enough so she could smell the clean masculine scent of him that shone through the light citrus aftershave she remembered so well. She swallowed, then stood to face him. He didn’t step back, even though there were just inches between them.

She ran her tongue over her lips to moisten them, but even so her voice sounded cracked and dry to her own ears. “Not when I need you. Need your help.”

She needed more than that. She needed Ben to take her in his arms, to kiss her; to let her taste his mouth and find out if it was as magical as her heart remembered. But she was another man’s wife and the hard planes of his face told her without words that he would never forgive her betrayal. Kathryn sighed and began to turn away, but his next question stopped her.

Nicki Greenwood with Heavy Netting

The Wild Rose Press’s Editor-in-Chief, Rhonda Penders, came to our local RWA chapter to speak, and she introduced us to the brand-new series, Lobster Cove.  I’d never written for a publisher’s series before, but she also mentioned that her most successful authors wrote books of varying lengths in varying genres.  That was enough of a challenge to me!  After that, the hero of HEAVY NETTING took my words and ran away with them.  It was a fast and fun book to write and an exciting change for me.

It was one of the most amazing experiences of my writing career!  There’s such an energy among the Lobster Cove writers, and an enthusiasm for the overall project that feeds into every story.  We collaborated on so many things, and observant readers are going to find lots of interconnected little “Easter eggs” in each book.  I now feel like I could be dropped in Lobster Cove and find my way around as if it’s one of my favorite vacation spots.

The hero of HEAVY NETTING, Branson Cudahy, hails from one of my favorite places on earth: Lexington, Kentucky.  I took a trip to Lexington one weekend to visit the Kentucky Horse Park.  I’ll never forget it, and as we toured around looking at some of the sprawling horse farms, I remember thinking how I would have loved to be born into a big, horse-breeding family.  That’s Bran, although his career did take him down an alternate path. *grin*

I’d have to say either Bran’s best friend, Rudy, or another author’s character, Carlos Young.  Both are very vivid in my mind.  Rudy gives Bran a lot of guff, but he gets away with it because they’ve had such a history.  Carlos may be one of Bran’s favorite people in town because he runs the local gourmet coffee shop.  Bran does love his coffee!

Probably editing or web design!  I started out as an editor for The Wild Rose Press for two awesome years before getting published myself.  I now freelance edit and design websites, in addition to writing fiction.  It’s a lot of nuts-and-bolts work that could make a person tear her hair out, but I adore it.

I don’t think any of my dislikes are terribly unusual…although sunlight and I don’t get along very well without some high-test sunblock on!

HeavyNetting_w9151_med-prelim081413

BLURB:

Branson Cudahy is as southern as it gets, a cyber crime investigator from happily-landlocked Lexington, Kentucky.  He has been chasing a hacker for three years, and now the trail has led him to Lobster Cove, Maine … which is a real problem for a guy with a shellfish allergy.

Jenna Sanborn waits tables to pay the bills, but she dreams of opening a quilt shop in the heart of town.  She’d never even think of leaving Lobster Cove, but the handsome newcomer is tempting beyond her wildest imaginings.

Bran and Jenna never expect the whirlwind romance that comes out of their meeting.  As hard as they fight to control their feelings, their hearts are fighting to push them over that dizzying lover’s leap.  Will love win out, or will the hacker—and their dreams—slip the net?

EXCERPT:

“All right, Jenna,” he said. “Tell you what. I’m gonna be there about four o’clock. If you want to meet me there and talk Lobster Cove, I’ll be all ears. If not, no pressure.”

She giggled. Giggled. Like a teenager going to her first concert with a cute boy. Mortified, and now convinced that her cheeks were as red as a stop sign, she backed away. “I’ll keep it in mind. See you later, Mister Cudahy.”

His grin sent a flutter through her midsection. “Bran.”

“Okay. Bran.” She waved goodbye, then hurried off down the street with her groceries and would-be-truant oranges.

As she walked, she sensed his gaze on her, and she beamed, flattered and flustered, and for once, feeling beautiful.

Check out these exciting stories and be sure to follow the authors.

Christy Effinger with Say Nothing of What You See, a Paranormal New Adult Novel

What haunt us most are the ghosts of our own creation.

Fun fact:

As a Midwesterner,  I have long been fascinated by grain elevators. I once lived down the street from one when I was a broke college student. Say Nothing of What You See began with the mental image of a woman standing at the edge of a huge silo. I wrote the novel at night while my husband was taking MBA classes.

A few favorite lines:

I remembered the way she fell. The way she fell without a sound.

Like a pirate’s prisoner walking the plank. Like a bird too young to fly. Like a wounded moth, a dead star, a torn kite.

Maggie Toussaint with Rough Waters, a Romantic Suspense Novel

A treasure hunt turns deadly

Fun Fact:

I was inspired to write about a florist because once upon a time my mother owned a flower shop. I spent many an afternoon playing in the shop, building forts with blocks of foam, and watching mom work magic with a bouquet of flowers.

Writing about shipwrecked treasure came about due to my close proximity to Blackbeard Island. Rumors still circulate about Blackbeard’s treasure being buried in coastal Georgia. But my science training taught me that islands shift positions through time due to actions of wind and water. It seemed logical to me that an unmarked shipwreck of the 1800s might be in a different place. And if someone found a hand-drawn treasure map, he would think he really had something.

Rock’s survived war, his mother’s terminal illness, and a boat explosion. Jeanie’s been abandoned as a wife and mom and reinvented herself as a florist. In Rough Waters, a florist and a former SEAL join forces to reach their goals. He wants his stolen treasure returned, or he will lose everything he’s worked for. She wants to catch the creep who broke into her home and business so she can bring her kids home. Rough Waters…

A few favorite lines:

She didn’t need to be worried about her kids right now.

He’d worry enough for the both of them.

TWRP New Release Spotlight – PLUS Fun Facts and Favorite Lines…

I’m happy to share some brand new releases from The Wild Rose Press. Check out these exciting stories and be sure to follow the authors.

Ashantay Peters with Death Rub, a Mystery Novel

Class reunions can be murder, even after finding the perfect dress

Interesting Tidbit:

I was having a chair massage when the idea for this book niggled into my brain. My massage therapist didn’t seem as enthused as I was about the plot, however. Hmm…I wonder if she thought I was making a personal comment about her skills.  Not so! My fictional massage therapist, Maggie, is a true heroine – facing her past and working past her fears to reach a better future. But then, I think anyone who confronts their dark side is heroic.

Favorite Line(s):

“He tasted like cinnamon with a piquant aftertaste of dark chocolate.”

Diana Green with Dragon Wife, Paranormal Romance Novel

Beware the dragon when he finds his mate.

Interesting Tidbit:

The idea for this story came to me from a dream. In it, I experienced being a woman with magical abilities, living in a medieval world. I encountered a dragon-shifter chieftain and became quite smitten with him, only to learn he was betrothed to my cousin.
The emotions in my dream were so compelling, as was the vividness of the setting and characters. When I woke, I knew I had the seed for a great novel. The rest, as they say, is history.

Favorite Lines:

“If  you’re fretting about those stories, where dragons carry off beautiful virgins, I can put your mind at rest. I haven’t done that in ages.”

Orwenna’s head snapped up.

“Since I’m not a beauty or a virgin, I won’t worry,” she said tartly. “I’ll just pray you can fly well enough not to drop me.”

Gail MacMillan with Heather for a Highlander, historical romance novel

Interesting Tidbit:

In reading a book about provincial history, I came upon a section listing home remedies in 1820 New Brunswick.  Some were bazaar such as the asthma cure that required eating field mice fried in butter.  Others , such as heating poppy seeds in milk as a cure for insomnia, had merit.  About this time, people of the First Nation were also introducing their own medicines such as the fox glove plant for heart ailments to the newcomers.  What about a doctor of that era as a hero?  The idea burst into my mind as I read.  But not just any doctor… a remarkable doctor, one who could separate  the ridiculous remedies from those with benefits, a doctor open the wisdom of the First Nation’s healers and shamans, a doctor bold enough to question long standing medical practices such as bleeding?   Thus was born Dr. William MacTavish and his rogue of a brother, sea captain James.  And as Dr. MacTavish’s practice in the backwoods of New Brunswick grew, he would require an assistant but when he sent his brother on a quest for such an individual he had no idea his unpredictable brother would return with Heather for the former Highlander Dr. MacTavish.

Five Authors from Oklahoma – (Burdened, Vol. 2) Five Stories in One Boxed Set About a Cursed Doll and True Love

Last week I introduced a boxed set of 5 short stories from The Tales of the Scrimshaw Doll series. This week, I am featuring Burdened, Volume 2.

A while back, a group of Oklahoma authors came together to write a series of short stories with the recurring theme of a cursed Scrimshaw doll. The curse began in the late seventeenth century when a father feared his daughter’s betrothed would betray her. A gypsy attempted to hex the girl with this spell: All those who betray you will suffer. Only true love can break the curse. As luck (or bad luck) would have it, the girl was holding a Scrimshaw Doll her father had made for her, and the curse went into the doll instead, and therefore, it carried on for centuries. Our first installment picks up with the young woman’s daughter, who has inherited the doll.

These stories, in various genres, all stand alones, were published with The Wild Rose Press as individual releases, but have now been released in two boxed sets, each containing five stories.

Take a look at the fun and exciting stories in Volume 2:

Kathy L Wheeler with The Color of Betrayal, Contemporary Novella

He’d risk a broken nose for love

Factoid:

When I found myself stuck trying to determine artist Malia Kane’s sidekick, one of my very good friends began to speak—so what if he’d already passed from this world into the next—It worked. Charlie’s advice was perfect! And I was happy to bring him back to life as Malia’s agent. It was a fitting tribute for one of my best friends ever.

Callie Hutton with Tessa’s Treasures, Contemporary Romance Novella

*************

Alicia Dean with Thicker than Water, Romantic Suspense Novella

Some secrets refuse to stay buried

Factoid:

I almost always use celebrities as inspiration for my main characters in order to have a set image in my mind and to make them feel more real. In this story, it seemed to work especially well for me. I used Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens in Justified for my hero, Sheriff Jake Devlin, and the character really seemed to come alive for me. Another little tidbit; I almost always use fictitious towns in my books. In this story, I used Covington, Oklahoma, as a nod to Covington, Georgia, the real town behind fictitious Mystic Falls and where Vampire Diaries is filmed. I decided to use the same town in my upcoming Halloween short story, Caster’s Unfriendly Ghost.

A favorite line(s):

Julia stared at her incredulously. “You can’t possibly think that we deserve to be punished?”

Pam met her gaze. “I don’t think you do, but maybe the doll does.”

Anna Kittrell with Skinbound, Romantic Suspense Novella

When Darcy falls for the town doctor, she finds herself at her wicked twin sister’s mercy, with nothing but the yellowed bones of an ancient doll to protect her.

Factoid:

Truth makes great fiction, and I infiltrate my stories with plenty of it. Take the following excerpt from Skinbound, for example:

Once, as a young girl, Scarlett whispered Darcy’s name through the keyhole of her bedroom door. Darcy knocked, then twisted the knob. Finding it locked, she’d dropped to her knees, peering through the keyhole into the shadowy room. Puzzled, she’d raised her head—just as a straightened coat hanger plunged through the opening, nicking her cheek.

The truth is, yes, I almost lost an eyeball. As a child, my sister plunged a straightened coat hanger through the keyhole, barely missing my eye. I moved just in time. Oh—I should mention one little discrepancy—she hadn’t called my name through the opening. I was just spying. Guess I deserved it.

A favorite line(s):

She dove for the cardboard box as if it were home plate. Blood oozed from her skinned elbows as she thrust her hands into her great-grandmother’s belongings, rescuing her scrimshaw doll.

Tamrie Foxtail with The Bone Bride, Romantic Suspense Novella

Daira’s first love has returned to their home town. Is he the next victim of the scrimshaw doll?

Factoid:

I live in a small Oklahoma town. Our old home was a short walk from a haunted bridge, one that actually appears on a list of Oklahoma’s most haunted sights. I’ve always wanted to use the bridge in a story, and it seemed a perfect fit with a cursed doll.

A Favorite Line(s):

She turned to look at him. His nose was an inch from hers. She struggled to keep her eyes from crossing. “You think I don’t want you to kiss me because you dumped me twenty years ago?”

“You mean there’s another reason?”

“Yes! You’re little more than a stranger, now. I don’t go around kissing strange men.”

His smile deepened. He leaned closer, the tip of his tongue tracing the shell of her ear. She shivered.

“I’m not a stranger, sweetheart.” His hands slid down her arms and moved to her waist. “I’m the man who took your virginity in the backseat of my car.”

Be sure to check out next week’s post. In the meantime…take a look at the fun and exciting stories in Volume 1:

Diana Layne, Pirate’s Proposal, Historical romance Novella

The story that began it all…

Interesting Fact:

I love pirate romances and Italians and strong women heroines and was happy to find a way to combine the three!

A favorite line:

One pirate often looked like the other, sunburned and scruffy, but she was certain they’d never met.

Kae Elle Wheeler / The English Lily / Historical Novella

A runaway heiress protecting her secrets is no match for a destitute viscount resolved to his fate—whatever the cost

Interesting Fact:

The English Lily was inspired from book iii of my Cinderella Series – The Surprising Enchantress, where Lady Esmeralda, Cinderella’s batty-eyed sister is jealous of the prim, very feminine, and definitely normal-fluttering-eyed miss. But Lady Kendra had her own secret, leading to her own story to tell.

 A favorite line:

She was happy to be his guinea pig, so to speak, although referring to herself as a pig of any sort seemed a bit extreme.

Heidi Vanlandingham, Trail of Hope, Historical Novella

Can love and hope prevail on a deadly journey?

Interesting Fact:

I love genealogy and have always wanted to know where my ancestors came from, how they lived, and what they believed. What decisions they made that trickled down through time and created who I am today. I’m actually descended from one of Pocahontas’s sisters and my several greats cousin was Nathaniel Pryor who founded Pryor, Oklahoma. His fantastic story inspired my ideas behind Trail of Hope.

A favorite line:

Hunger pains gnawed at the inside of Sophia’s shrunken stomach. And she stunk. Her dirt wore dirt, and it stunk.

Tamrie Foxtail, Fading Rose, Contemporary Romance Novella

Can a cursed doll and a miracle bring life and love to a dying woman?

Interesting Fact:

A few years ago my husband was given a year to live unless he received a new kidney. We were seven months into that year when he received the kidney. Also, the parrot is modeled after a friend’s parrot.

A Favorite Line:

“When I called yesterday to ask you out, you could have said ‘I wish I could, but I have to go to dialysis.’ See how simple that would be? Short, sweet and to the point.”

Jessica Ferguson, The Last Daughter, Romantic Suspense Novella

A past more terrifying than she dares to imagine

Fun Fact:

I was living in Oklahoma when I learned that the Scrimshaw Doll series was being planned. When I sat down to pull together a proposal for submission, my characters and the house called Wounded Heart, appeared so incredibly real to me, it was as though they were alive and waiting for me to come into their lives to tell their story. Newspapers across the state were filled with stories of abuse so while my tale is dark, and has to do with that very unromantic subject, the theme is forgiveness. Hero Trent Jones and I learned a lot from our heroine, Rayna Guildbeau, and we’re amazed at her capacity to love and forgive.

A favorite line:

“I know when I start finding clues, or relatives, there’ll be no turning back. My life will be different—for good or for bad.”
