The Secret of Pendragon Island by Judge Bayton ~ #AHAgrp #Blog #GothicMystery #FREEonKU

I am beyond delighted to host my friend, Jude Bayton. She is talented, funny, lovely, and kind. And, she has an awesome British accent. 🙂 Oh yes, and her writing is fabulous. Check out my review of The Secret of Pendragon Island… (Which is FREE on Kindle Unlimited)

The Secret of Pendragon IslandThe Secret of Pendragon Island by Jude Bayton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Secret of Pendagron Island took me back to my days of devouring Gothic Mystery Romances by authors such as Barbara Michaels, Victoria Holt, Phyllis A. Whitney, and Daphne du Maurier. Miss Bayton has the perfect voice for the genre, and the setting and mood were delightfully atmospheric. I loved Poppy—a wonderful gothic heroine, strong but vulnerable, smart and brave. There was a nice little love triangle and I was rooting for Donovan the entire time. A compelling mystery with a few clever twists at the end, The Secret of Pendagron Island is a must read for gothic mystery lovers…or anyone who enjoys being swept away into a fabulous story.

Welcome, Jude!

Please tell us a little about yourself, where are you from? Where do you live now? Family? Pets?

I was born in Germany into a British military family. I am from Kingston-Upon-Thames in Surrey, just outside of London. As a child, I lived in Yemen, Kenya, Wales, Scotland & Germany, until my father left the Army when I was 10.

I now live in Oklahoma with my husband John. Between us we have four sons and four grandchildren. We are empty nesters, except for our Blue Heeler. Her name is Scout.

Tell us a little bit about how this book came about.

This is the third book in what I call the Secret Set. I have always been fascinated with the Victorian era. Whenever I start to write, I automatically go to that time in history. As a reader, I love historical fiction, but I read contemporary also. I enjoy a thread of romance, but I always like getting my teeth into a good mystery.

The setting for this book is Cornwall, a beautiful place much beloved by us Brits. The inspiration for the title was from the old Arthurian tales of Uther Pendragon, a very well-known name in Cornwall, where the Arthurian legends run deep. It was fun coming up with a completely fictitious island! The main character, Poppy, is a lot like the younger me—curious, passionate, with a strong the desire to be a writer, always with her nose in a book. She compares people to the characters she reads about and has a strong sense of justice.

As with all my books, the main character and place drives the start of the process. Research colours in many things for me, especially with the stories being historical. To me, that can be the most difficult part. Historical accuracy is sticky. It’s horrid when you write about them being on a train, and then realise there wasn’t even a station where they are going! Keeping mysteries going without giving too much away is also hard work. The hardest part of this story was balancing more than one mystery at the same time.

What book have you read that you wish you had written?

Persuasion, by Jane Austen

Do you collect anything?

Books!

Would you rather have a bad review or no review?

A bad review can be helpful and point out real issues – If you point out a flaw though, explain why, or offer a solution.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with?

Henry Cavill

Your most prized material possession? Why?

A locket my father bought my mother on their 60th wedding anniversary – now that my parents are no longer here.

Have you written any other books that are not published?

Yes. I have two more Gothics which will come out in 2022. I also write under the pen name DJ FitzSimons and plan to release a contemporary detective novel.

What is the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?

The worst said that a mistake I made in one book was ‘lazy writing’ – Best said they couldn’t put the book down and wanted more.

What do your friends and family think of your writing?

They all know I’ve waited a long time to do this. They have been very encouraging, proud, and tell me to write more!

What character in your book are you least likely to get along with?

Mrs Malahide – she reminds me of my headmistress in boarding school.

How much of the book is realistic?

My work is fictional, and the situations can be far-fetched. But HOW the characters react to everything has to be realistic. It is the same in books I read. You can stretch a plot and a storyline, but people are always people, no matter what!

Blurb:

‘This secret might be the death of her…’

Working for the wealthy Nightingale family in a Cornish castle, is just the adventure budding novelist and librarian Poppy Livingstone is ready to undertake. The orphaned daughter of a convicted criminal, she is anxious to leave London and strike out on her own. But upon arriving at Pendragon Castle to a discourteous welcome, Poppy finds herself embroiled in a murder investigation, and on the trail of a woman whose mysterious disappearance twenty years earlier has captured her imagination.

Discovering evidence of an embezzler who has infiltrated the Nightingale family’s mining empire, Poppy becomes privy to their identity. Sworn to secrecy by Pendragon’s handsome heir, Clive, she inadvertently becomes a target – and the killer is watching.

When a series of catastrophes jeopardizes the family’s financial future, all evidence points to foul play. Who seeks to ruin Lord Nightingale’s family, and why? The death of another victim tempts Poppy to run for her life. But stubbornly she stands her ground, delves deeper, and boldly confronts an unknown enemy. But a lifetime reading literature is insufficient training as a sleuth. When at last she forces the killer’s hand, Poppy is unprepared for a shocking revelation and her own role in dark secrets of the past. Though the villain will finally be unmasked, ultimately Poppy will question if her entire existence has been a lie.

Excerpt:

Adjacent to the castle was the kitchen garden—a generous rectangular affair. Though summer was yet to arrive, the herbs and plants were coming along a treat. I walked the length of the garden, admiring the healthy vines and leaves of different vegetables growing from the rich brown soil. The following plot I encountered was most likely a cutting garden. I recognised Daffodils, red and yellow Tulips, Lily of the Valley and one of my favourite’s, Iris. The heady scent of freesia hung in the air, and I momentarily paused to enjoy it while I ate my toast.

“It is a wonderful morning to dine alfresco, is it not?”

I whirled around so quickly that tea splashed from my mug. I had company. A tall, dark-haired man stood several feet away from me, leaning against a tree trunk while inhaling on a cheroot. Smoke spiralled above his head and clung to the dewy morning air.

“I beg your pardon,” I stammered. “I was unaware of your presence.” I began to move back towards the castle.

He took a step towards me. “Please, do not let me scare you away. I did not mean to startle you. I was just enjoying the fresh air and trying to wake up.”

I stared at him. He was well-built and muscular. His face of hard angles was softened by a pronounced dimple in his right cheek and a generous mouth that now smiled at me. He was black-headed, with eyes the colour of coal. Yet, there was something in his expression which smoothed the rugged masculinity of his appearance.

“Thank you, sir. We must have thought alike. I too sought to escape the warmth of the castle.” Who was this man? I had not seen him before. Could he be one of the groundsmen? I glanced at his clothing. Nothing to tell there. He was dressed neither as gentleman nor labourer, but something in between.

“Are you employed by the Nightingale’s,” he asked, one thick eyebrow arched.

“Yes, well, for the moment anyway.” I chewed my lower lip, and his eyes moved to my mouth. “I am cataloguing the Pendragon library. This is my third day here.”

“Ah,” he gave an easy grin. “A mainlander.”

I nodded, and then as I opened my mouth to speak, I heard footsteps approaching. It was Mrs Malahide. She carried a flower basket and cutting shears as she strode towards where I stood, clutching my tea and half-eaten toast. Inwardly I groaned.

“Miss Livingstone?” Her frown conveyed what thoughts were in her mind at the sight of me speaking to a man without a chaperone.

“Good morning, Mrs Malahide,” I said politely.

She took a breath, but the man interrupted quickly. “Morning, Malahide.” He threw down the stub of his tobacco and ground the ember out with his boot. “Ladies, if you would please excuse me.” He strode away, and as he passed, winked at me. I was shocked. But before I could react, the burn of Mrs Malahide’s disapproving glare landed upon me once again.

“I must get to work,” I blurted, and moved away as fast as I could without running.

Ten Things I Learned On My Writing Journey by Liz Tyner ~ #Giveaway & The Wallflower Duchess

Please help me welcome my friend, Liz Tyner. I LOVE this girl so much!! She’s talented and sweet and funny and smart. What’s not to love? She has some excellent advice for us today. PLUS, she’s giving away a prize!! One lucky commenter will receive a copy of her book,  Wallflower Duchess and a Swag Surprise Gift from RWA17.

https://www.harlequin.com/shop/books/9780373629053_the-wallflower-duchess.html

Ten Things I Learned On My Writing Journey

  1. A novel is a series of mini stories. Little scenes, one leading to the next.
  2. Each scene should move the story forward. You can test that quickly by summarizing, in one sentence, what happened in the scene. Those sentences, read in order, are a novel’s plot.
  3. Something in the scene should make it real or individual. For instance, a character takes a bite of an orange and grabs a napkin.
  4. A scene should have a “sense” included besides visual, such as the taste of the orange, the feel of the juice sticking on the face or the sound of a napkin box falling to the floor.
  5. Usually, the minor characters shouldn’t pull attention from the main characters or plot, but background is very important to create reality for the reader. Try to point out a bit of individuality in each background character and each scene. A chipped tooth on a smile. Straightening a picture of the leaning tower of Pisa.
  6. Boredom is bad. Imagine how many times you walk by pictures on the wall in your home, and no matter how much you liked them at first, you ignore them. Put new art up, and it’s fresh for a while, but then you start ignoring it again. Push yourself to put freshness throughout each book.
  7. No matter how stunningly wonderful your story is, it’s not going to appeal to most people because most people only read one book on average per year. They prefer other things. You’re writing for a select group of people, and one in particular—yourself.
  8. If you want people to read your book, plan to market. With millions of books to choose from, a reader who would like to read your story simply cannot find you without help. Marketing creates a road map to the location of your book. A chance to tell someone who is searching for that style of story where they can locate it.
  9. Don’t compare yourself to people quickly volunteering information about sales and income. People “spin” their writing lives. Most multi-published authors are a “bestselling author” or “prize winning author” in some form or another.
  10. The paperwork on a writing business is a pain, and grows as the business grows. You’re going to have expenses. If you’re serious about writing, you’ll have income taxes to pay. Plus the social security tax is around 15%. Add an agent, and a good rule of thumb is to halve your royalties by 50%. In other words, an agented author with a major publisher will most likely only net about half an advance.
  11. (Bonus) Writing is hard, but most important journeys are And copyrights are scheduled to last about 70 years longer than the life of the author. Which feels good. Now—imagine how many free books those authors starting 100 years from now will have to contend with…

Wow…fabulous, Liz!! Very helpful info. I’m definitely going to keep this handy. Thank you so much for joining me today!

But I’ve had editions published in ten countries and my author copies arrive with the Harper Collins imprint on the box. My last novel, The Wallflower Duchess, hit a bestseller list. “10 Moments That Changed My Life” by Marie Higgins Plus: PRETENDING YOU’RE MINE Historical Romance

Please help me welcome author Marie Higgins, sharing the…

10 Moments That Changed My Life”

  1. Writing a skit for girl’s camp when I was 17 years old, and getting the award of ‘best written’. At this age, I didn’t even know I wanted to be a writer.
  2. Receiving awards for my skits in the community. When I was in my mid-twenties, I wrote skits for my community which were performed and judged. The awards I received were “Funniest” and “Best Written”.
  3. Reading my first romance book, A Rose in Winter by Kathleen E Woodiwiss. I was in my mid-twenties, and my step-mother-in-law brought me this book to read when I was very sick. I was so caught up in the story that I couldn’t put it down. After I finished this story, I searched for more books by this author, and then more historical romance books. That was the point in my life when I fell in love with historical romance.
  4. Watching a romance/suspense movie that had the worst ending! Yes, believe it or not, this did change my life, because I was so upset that the producer/writer of this movie made the audience fall in love with the hero and heroine and yet they didn’t end up together at the end. This was the very thing that pushed me to write my own happy endings!
  5. I’ve always had movie-like dreams. The day I watched that crappy movie, I had a dream that night about a happily-ever-after story. The next morning, I decided to write my dream. That’s all it took to kick-start my muse. The rest, they say, is history…
  6. Joining RWA (Romance Writers of America). Can you imagine how excited I was to join a group of other writers who loved romance as I did? The years I was with the Utah Chapter, I met so many great women (who are still my friends today), and I learned so much about writing. I realized if I was going to be a writer, I’d better learn how to do it the right way.
  7. Winning Second Place in a writing contest! I entered my story (which is now titled “Charmed By Knight”) into a RWA contest, and I won second place! I was shocked…and on cloud nine. It was exciting to think that readers actually enjoyed my story.
  8. Received my first email from an agent from my dream agency. She had read “Charmed by Knight”, and loved it…but she couldn’t fit it into her schedule to represent me. So although I never did get with this ‘dream agency’, it was a thrill knowing she enjoyed my story. I even kept the email. lol
  9. Getting my first publishing contract. In 2010, I had a publishing company offer to contract one of my stories (which is now titled “Her Own Fairy Godmother”). The editor told me how much fun she had reading this story, and how she couldn’t put it down. Unfortunately, this particular publishing company was one of the worst mistakes I made, but at the time, I was thrilled that a publisher wanted my stories!
  10. Discovering self-publishing! In 2011 I had heard so many great things about self-publishing, so I decided to give it a try. That was one of the BEST decisions I’d ever made. Many of my stories were in Amazon’s top 100 best sellers, and I received many 5-star reviews! Now, all these years—and 44 books—later, my stories are still making it to Amazon’s top 100 best sellers, and I’m still receiving many awesome 5-star reviews.

Wow, Marie, what an excellent, fun list! I can definitely relate to your Kathleen Woodiwiss moment, except mine was The Flame and the Flower – Brandon and Heather, I’ll never forget reading that and being completely swept away. Although, my first experience with passionate historical romances was Rosemary Rogers’ Sweet, Savage Love. I read it 8 times! But, enough about me, LOL. Tell us about your book…

HEROIC ROGUE SERIES (all ebooks 99 cents through the month of July).

PRETENDING YOU’RE MINE (book 1)

Mercedes Maxwell is devastated when her twin sister is driven to take her own life by none other than her husband, William Braxton. Determined to make her brother-in-law pay for the injustice, Mercedes travels to Dorchester, England to find him. She is shocked to find that William is unaware of his wife’s death, and when Mercedes is mistaken for her sister, she decides to pose as her twin to glean some answers. Mercedes embarks on an adventure she never dreamed of in hopes of bringing justice to her sister. Instead of justice, Mercedes uncovers a plethora of secrets and mystery. As she works to unravel the mystery and discovers who she can trust, Mercedes finds that all is not as it seems, and that William Braxton may be the one man she can trust.

 EXCERPT :

Thundering hooves of a horse bore down upon them. Mercedes switched her attention to the man on the steed. The small crowd parted, and the man atop the animal dismounted. His horse had whipped up a cloud of dust in the dingy alley and she waved her hand in front of her face to keep from sneezing. The sight of the rider left her speechless and a bit weak at the knees.

His rugged appearance shocked her, his strength evident in his muscled arms and legs. Rather than the fancy clothes of the English gentry, the beige shirt and brown leather vest of a farmer’s attire stretched taut across his wide chest, and the black material of his trousers molded to his legs and fit snugly into his black knee-boots. But this man was no farmer. That much appeared evident by the way he carried himself as he strode toward her, his step too confident, too graceful.

When he neared and she gazed upon his face, her breath caught in her throat. The sun had turned his skin a light brown, and the sureness of his jaw bespoke authority. Chestnut hair tousled by the wind framed his head, and she had a sudden urge to swipe the unruly locks off his forehead.

He was quite handsome, if she dared admit, and he literally made her lungs stop working. Never had that happened to her from just admiring a man. Looking into his fiery hazel eyes, she swallowed hard.

He stopped mere inches away, towering over both Mercedes and the soldier like a dark cloud of doom. She leaned her head back to take in his height.

The handsome man met the soldier’s stare. “Sir, will you kindly remove your hands from my wife?”

Her jaw dropped. Wife?

“Correct me, Mr. Braxton, but was your wife not running from you?” The soldier shook his head. “A few hours ago, I had heard that you reported your wife missing. Now here she is caught running. There must be a reason for that.”

She sucked in her breath. Mr. Braxton? This handsome and very powerful man was William Braxton, her sister’s husband?

The pulse in her temple grew stronger. She couldn’t speak, and she couldn’t think. Telling him about Kat’s death was crucial, yet she didn’t want to do that in front of all of these spectators.

If only her mind would cooperate with her tongue and voice, perhaps she wouldn’t feel like a trapped animal. But more importantly, why did she find her brother-in-law dangerously attractive?

When the man in question settled his eyes on her, his expression softened and a smile touched his mouth. “Yes, my dear. Please inform the captain and all these good people why you were running from me.”

The American Civil War – The Way the Brits Saw It by Linda Nightingale ~ New Release: Her General in Gray

Please help me welcome fellow AHA author, Linda Nightingale, with an intersting article & a new release!

The American Civil War – The Way the Brits Saw It

Brit’s Eye View:  The Northern States denied the right of secession, claiming that the union was a “federal” one, in which case the attempt at separation is rebellion. The Southern States claimed that the Union was a “confederation” from which any member is entitled to separate itself. The British Government under Henry John Temple (3rd Viscount Palmerston) declined to judge between them.

Yet, popular sentiment was passionately divided. The violent feelings against slavery won many to the Union cause, but the political advocacy of the right of self-government won sympathy for the Confederacy from many another. Since the South fought against heavy odds, the sporting British people were drawn to the Confederacy.

Palmerston’s government was determined to maintain a strict neutrality. This, to most intents and purposes, it succeeded in doing though their cotton industry suffered direly. The blockades of the Southern ports cut off supplies of raw cotton upon which the Lancashire cotton industry was dependent. The cotton famine deprived many Lancashire operatives of their means of livelihood.

The Trent Affair increased sympathy with the South in England and very nearly involved Great Britain in the war. The Southerners dispatched two commissioners, one to England and one to France. The commissioners reached a neutral port and embarked on a British vessel, the Trent. A Union warship boarded The Trent and the commissioners were carried off. A declaration of war was only averted when President Lincoln gave way to the demands of the British Government and released the commissioners.

Yet, the Union had cause for complaint. Ships were built and fitted out in British docks and sailed from British ports with apparently harmless intent, to be employed as cruisers by the Confederates, having been cleverly concealed. The most notorious instance was the Alabama. The British Government flatly repudiated the charge that it did not display due diligence in preventing such action. When the war ended with the Union the victor, claims were brought for damages done by the cruisers.

If Britain had entered the war on the side of the South, how might history have been different!

Her General in Gray was inspired by the Ghost & Mrs. Muir, not by the Civil War.  Here is the blurb and a short excerpt.  See what you think of this Confederate General.

BLURB:

Autumn Hartley purchases Allen Hall at a steal, but the northern lass gets far more than a beautiful plantation in the South Carolina Low Country. The house comes complete with its own ghost, a handsome and charming Civil War General—for the Confederacy. The stage is set for another civil conflict.

John Sibley Allen died in battle from a wound in the back, the bullet fired by the turncoat, Beauregard Dudley. The traitor’s reincarnation is Autumn the Interloper’s first dinner guest. Sib bedevils her date and annoys her with fleeting, phantom touches, certain he can frighten her away as he did previous purchasers. As time marches on, her resident ghost becomes more appealing while her suitor, Beau, pales in comparison. Autumn finds her ability to love didn’t perish in the divorce that sent her south seeking a fresh start.

After over a century in the hereafter, Sib discovers he is falling for none other than the feisty Yankee girl, but what future could a modern woman and an old-fashioned ghost possibly hope for?

EXCERPT:

“Did you have slaves, General Allen?”

“I did, Miss Hartley. They were an extended part of my family. None left the plantation when the war began. Unfortunately, I was killed in battle, as were my other two brothers, and they were forced to accept freedom. My estranged brother inherited and basically sent them packing with no more than the clothes on their backs. Perhaps Hell is his new habitat.”

“Why are you still here?” She glanced around the room.  “I mean why didn’t you go wherever dead people go?”

He laughed.  “To torment you, I suppose.”

“You’re doing that grandly.” She flung a shooing gesture.  “Leave.  I’ve no need of a ghostly…whatever.”

“I’m not a whatever, Miss Hartley. This is my house, and you’re the intruder—along with the coward who murdered me.” He removed his coat, hanging it on the back of a chair. “With all due respect, I take offense to your tone and the fact that you served Beauregard on my mother’s fine china.  She loved those pieces.”

“I’m the intruder? You’re dead. You have no claim on this place.” She braced her hands on her hips, glaring at the arrogant spirit.

We live in Northeastern Oklahoma.

What was the most difficult thing about writing WHEN ASH REMAINS?

The most difficult thing about writing this book was blending historical facts, with paranormal elements, with Native American lore, and NOT drag in a bunch of stereotypes. It helps that I am part Choctaw and live in the Cherokee Nation, so I’ve seen and studied much of the local culture. I just hope I didn’t step on any toes with anything I put in my book.

Do you collect anything?

I have a sizable collection of rubber ducks. My entire bathtub rim and the window sill above it are covered.

What’s the main thing that you could get rid of in your life that would give you more writing time?

LOL – cleaning the house. I just need a Jetsons style house with little robots that come out periodically and do all the cleaning for me.

What is your most prized material possession? Why?

My grandmother’s dinner ring. Because of all the memories I have of her – some of which include me sitting next to her in church and being allowed to wear it.

What do you want your tombstone to say?

She lived and she loved with everything she had.

If you could spend time with a character from your book, whom would it be? And what would you do during that day? (PG-13 please 🙂 )

I’d love to spend time with Ahyoka, the heroine in When Ash Remains. She has the ability to hear voices of the spirits of the land, the elements, and the ancestors. I just think that we could learn so much if we knew what they were saying.

What is the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?

Actually, the toughest criticism I’ve received came from my mother. She thought I used too many “trashy words” in my early books. Of course those books were written for Ellora’s Cave, therefore a bit more steamy than she cares for but my more recent books she approves of.

The best compliment (NOTE: every good review is great and I treasure them all!) that I hang on to even now came from my writing mentor, Ms. Peggy – she told me multiple times that I was a “good little writer.” I can still hear her telling me that.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

My characters mostly come from my imagination – they just show up. But I do introduce side characters from time to time that are based on people I know. For example, my writing mentor, Ms. Peggy, made a cameo appearance in Ghostly Persuasion. I figure she’ll show up again in future books – or her personality will anyway.

What do your friends and family think of your writing?

My mother is tickled pink. I think my boys are proud that their mom is a writer but know I write books they won’t care about. Most of my friends think it’s cool – but a few are shocked I write mushy, sexy stuff. Of course my bestie is thrilled she gets free books in advance. LOL

What character in your book are you least likely to get along with?

Ahyoka’s chief. I thought he was a pompous ass.

Who is the most famous person you have ever met?

If I exclude all the authors I’ve met it would probably be Lee Majors. I was about 5 years old at the time but I still remember it!!

How did you come up with the title?

There’s a scene in the book where Kajika, the hero, is speaking to the elder shaman. I took the title from something he says to Kajika. It speaks to a person’s life’s purpose.

Tell us your favorite…

Movie – I can’t pick just one!! Harry Potter (all of them), Thor, Suicide Squad, Sherlock Holmes (RDJ’s), anything with Keanu Reeves

Music – hard rock; probably Halestorm right now

Place you’ve visited – Florida Keys

Place you’d like to visit – UK

TV show from childhood – Scooby Doo

TV show from adulthood – Dr. Who

Food – homemade mashed potatoes

Sports team – Dallas Cowboys

Which do you prefer: Board games/card games or television? Card games

Thank you so much…I enjoyed getting to know you. Now, tell us a little about your book…

519lcauqf1l

Short Blurb:

Destiny drives us all.

Kajika went in search of his cousin’s killer. What he found was so much more.

Ahyoka had always been treated as an outsider. When she met Kajika, she yearned to belong to him, body and soul.

New Release ~ The Son of a Gambling Man by Jordan Meryl – ONLY 99¢ for a Limited Time!!

Please help me welcome Jordyn Meryl, who is sharing her latest release…

I am one of those old aspiring authors who started late in life on a lifelong dream. The Son of a Gambling Man is my tenth published book. I decided to indie publish because I wanted to get in the game. Being a genre jumper, I just believe there is always a love story. I do write with a bit of spice. Check out my author page on Amazon- http://amzn.to/1KVNXrM Give me a try and leave an honest review. I really would like to know what you, the readers think.

final

1800 New Orleans was a time of change for the city on the Mississippi River. August Decoudreau and Isabella Greenwood grew up in the shadow of the very prestige and legal prostitute establishment of The House of the Crescent Moon.

Isabelle’s mother, Stella, was one of the girls of the house. The Madame of the House treated her girls well and protected them. But it only took one despicable customer and a bad judgement call to turn the lives of everyone in a different direction.

Isabelle is sent off to an all girl’s school and August joins his father, a gambler, to travel on the riverboats of the Mississippi River.

Will the two lovers find a way back to each other or be forever separated?

1927-New Orleans

“Earth and Water, Fire and Air,
Carry us, carry us, carry us there.”

In a small opening in the middle of the dense forest, a woman with shadowy black eyes, her arms lifted to the star-filled sky, danced under the full moon. Her body jerked in rhythm to the ceremonial music in her head. As she chanted words in a foreign tongue, a small fire in the rock pit fought for its life. Suddenly it busted into a blazing inferno, its flame licked at the sky.

Lucinda, as the people called her, smiled as the heat hit her face. She had come because a friend of hers had just given birth to a son.

August was his given name, August Reynaud Decoudreau, such a big name for such a small being.

The Voodoo queen was known the city over as the one to safeguard a child’s destiny. For August, the son of a gambler, was cursed already from the abandonment of his father and the battles for survival of his mother.

The mother had shown up at Lucinda’s door three months ago, sick and already heavy with child.

Suddenly the midnight sky turned dark from the rapidly rolling clouds, flashes of lightning lit up the night. Lucinda understood. This child would face many struggles and complications. Being a child born under the sign of Leo, the lion, who was ruled by the Sun and fed by the element of fire, he would overcome them, fight to right them and carry on.

To help him she bestowed upon his inner self a boldness to always walk strong and confident. A fearlessness to believe that good overcomes evil and sensitivity to love completely and honestly.

“Hear me night sky. This child is blessed among men to follow the path of righteousness. Do not forsake him as he was sent by the gods and will live in the realm of light and good.”

The thunder rolled over the valley. Lucinda went to her knees, letting the soft, gentle rain cleanse the core of her existent. She believed in this child.

August was sent here for a reason and she would see that he was protected.

Thanking the spirits of the night, she rose and went back to the city.

The city of sin and ruin.

New Orleans.

And the House of the Crescent Moon.

I am extending the sale of $0.99 until Sunday October 9th for the ebook in all formats. http://amzn.to/2clZlZH

JORDYN MERYL

Once living under the guise of a passive, quiet, school librarian, books and kids were the passions which kept her mind fresh.  One day she decided to spread her wings and live the dream of her heart. As she sits in front of her computer, her fingers bring to life the voices in her head. But it is when the night muses visit Jordyn, her spirit rises up to wrap around the stories that float in her dreams.  Land locked in the mid-west she envisions days on a white sandy beach with a laptop to write all her tales.  Crossing many genres she spins chronicles of love in Romance, Contemporary, Paranormal, Sci-Fi, Futuristic, Historical and Fantasy, for they are stories worth telling, even at the risk of revealing true feelings.

Author Josie Rivera on Romany Culture ~ New Release: Seeking Patience Plus a Giveaway!

Please help me welcome today’s guest, Josie Riviera…

RivieraJosieSM-Ad1(1)

Exploring the fascinating culture of the Romany. (Gypsies)

Gadje Gadjensa, Rom Romensa.”

This is a Romany (Gypsy) saying that means “Gadje with Gadje, Rom with Rom.”

So what is a gadje? A gadje in the Romany language means “not one of us.” Many Rom prefer to not allow outsiders (us) into their lives. It’s no coincidence that in my hours, days, and months of researching the Romany for Seeking Patience, little information was available. Odd, because the Rom have lived in many places throughout the world for centuries. They’re a widely-traveled people. Yet there is little written history regarding their origins, although recent evidence points to an emigration from India 1500 years ago.

I believe the reason there is little information available is because the Rom simply prefer it that way. They are a proud people who keep to themselves. And they are nomads, forever on the move, traveling by horse and wagon in caravans.

It is no secret that the Rom have suffered persecution, prejudice, exclusion, and discrimination for centuries. The “Gypsy” stereotype includes a criminal, fortune-teller, blacksmith, thief, and musician, a dark-complexioned, shadowy figure. But why do so many of us harbor this unfair prejudice? Perhaps because of the Rom’s nomadic existence, lack of a solid religious belief, and exotic clothes and lifestyle. Their dialect is distinct and related to Sanskrit. Their tradition is oral, for they didn’t have the luxury of building libraries.

One belief shared by all Rom is cleanliness. Mahrime means unclean or polluted. To avoid mahrime, clothes covering the top half of their body are washed separately from clothes on the bottom. Certain parts of the female body are considered unclean, and doctors are sometimes avoided because they deal with illness. And, a Rom can become polluted by being too close to a gadje.

Seeking Patience explores prejudices and how the English viewed the Romany (Gypsies,) in Regency England,

Do you think men or women are more likely to be prejudiced?

Leave your comment below for a chance to win a free copy of Seeking Patience. Winner will be announced by Thursday, August 2nd. In the meantime,  subscribe to my newsletter on my website and receive a FREE, HISTORICAL ROMANCE EBOOK NOVELLA!

Do people prove their worth by strength, or by character?

Half-Romany, half-English lord, he lives a perilous Gypsy life … until a sweet English rose saves his life, and perhaps his soul. Widowed by a cruel husband, she’s given up all hope of love. Brought together in peril, they dare to reach for a brighter future together.

Luca Boldor, Romany leader, lives a nomad’s life in Regency England with his Gypsy caravan. Believing his noble father abandoned him at birth, he refuses to acknowledge his English blood, or live a settled life. But when a vicious attack by a rival leaves him bleeding on an English lady’s doorstep, he has no choice but to accept her help. Her gentle faith stirs his heart in a way he has long denied.

Lady Patience Blakwell, widowed countess, lives in near poverty. Her husband’s heir uses threats to keep her from demanding her rightful inheritance. With a few faithful servants, she exists quietly in the country, only her faith keeping her strong … until the day a bold, handsome Gypsy collapses in her hall. He’s unlike any man she’s ever known, and she’ll confront any subterfuge to keep him safe.

But when a secret from Lady Patience’s past emerges, Luca must face his own past, or lose her and all hope of love. Will this strong man humble himself to open his heart for his lady?
