Nona Raines with Read to Me, an erotic romance novella

A shared love of erotica leads to one passionate night. Can it also lead to love?

Fun fact: I got the idea for how the characters first meet from an incident I witnessed years ago while riding the bus. A lady passenger accidentally sat on a strange man’s lap! My little writer’s brain saved that up to use someday in a story.

A few favorite lines from the book:

Had this man actually asked to read erotica with her? Yes.

And was she going to agree? Yes!

Elvis Presley – Ramblings from a Lifelong Fan, Part 1

Elvis Presley has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I have always loved him—I don’t even recall the first time I discovered him. It just seems as though he was always there. My sister, Ruth, however, does remember when she discovered him, and I’m a little jealous of that memory, since I don’t have my own. (Nor do I remember the incident, so I’m telling her version, which is very short :)). She was five and I was seven (but, it’s really odd how, all these years later, she’s somehow older than me…hmmm…) 😉 Anyway, I digress. She said that I called her into the living room where Elvis’s movie, Harum Scarum, was playing (on our black and white television. This was around 1967, but we didn’t yet have a color tv), and I pointed Elvis out to her and said, “Look, isn’t he cute?” From then on, she and I grew up sharing our devotion to Elvis.

elvis-presley1

I can’t explain exactly how I feel about Elvis; only another true fan really ‘gets’ it. But, he was more than just an entertainer. He had this special, magical quality that I can’t name, but I know exists. Otherwise, why would millions of people all over the world love him so much? Why would they—nearly 37 years after his death—travel thousands of miles just to see his home? (And, they still do, daily in droves of thousands, from places as far as Australia, Ireland, England, etc.) Because, he touched people in a way no other entertainer has before or ever will again. Even if you are not an Elvis fan, you can’t deny the impact he had on the world. Yes, there are other successful, talented, well-loved performers. But, seriously, another Elvis? I don’t think so.

Although I have never wavered in my love for Elvis, I’ve recently gained a new appreciation of him now that I listen to Elvis radio on Sirius XM. It’s so awesome that they have an entire channel devoted to him. Nothing but Elvis, 24/7. And, that is all I ever listen to. Seriously, all the time, Elvis Radio. Not only do they play a ton of his great music, including rare recordings, but they have guests who knew the real Elvis. They share their memories of him, and hearing the intimate details of his life makes him all the more special.

Because of my adoration of Elvis, I have mentioned him in almost all of my published works. Here’s a little sample from “Poetic Injustice” a Romantic Suspense Novella (one of my older titles published through The Wild Rose Press) CLICK ON THE COVER FOR MORE INFORMATION

6. Poetic Injustice 6.7.11

Snippet:

Samantha put in an Elvis CD and cracked the window just a bit. She loved the fresh smell of rain, and a little moisture wouldn’t hurt anything.

Love Coming Down, one of Elvis’ more obscure releases from the 70’s, was playing. The damp evening air and Elvis’ powerful voice filled the car, surrounding her, calming her. She released a breath and, along with it, some of the tension of the past few weeks.

Do you have any special moments to share about Elvis, or any other entertainer?

Salad Wars – Quest for the Best

I love a good salad, but I have discovered, not all salads are created equal. Whether it’s a fast food salad, or a sit down restaurant salad, the choices are endless, and some are not quite up to par.

I decided to put various salads from various restaurants to the test in searching for the very best. I would like to say my criteria is the health/low calorie value, but that isn’t quite true. I am judging purely on taste/quality/price value. I try to choose salads over burgers and pizza for the most part, but I realize when cheese, bacon, and ranch dressing is added, the healthy advantages suffer a bit. But, I use minimal amounts of dressing, and I still believe that a salad must be a better choice than a bacon cheeseburger and fries, right?

So…each week I am featuring three different salads and giving them a rating based on my own personal criteria. Feel free to share your opinions about these salads or others, whether you loved or loathed them.

This is the rating scale I am using (because these are the elements that are important to me 🙂

(25 points possible)

1) Freshness: You can tell when a salad was made way earlier and just pulled from the cooler rather than prepared freshly. [1 through 3]
2) Type of Lettuce: I don’t care for iceberg lettuce, I love the really green stuff, and if a salad has brownish yellow lettuce, it’s a HUGE fail. [0 through 3]
3) Overall taste. [1 through 5]
4) Crispies. These are things like croutons, sunflower seeds, etc. Very important to me in a salad. Some salads have great ones, some have none, and some have sub par ones. [1 through 3]
5) Value for the $ – [1 through 4]
6) Variety of vegetables/ingredients: Some salads have lettuce and nothing else. I like a few other things thrown in like carrots, cucumbers, olives, etc. [1 through 4]
7) Cheese. A salad can have too little cheese or so so cheese, but it cannot have too much cheese, in my opinion. [1 through 3]

Wendy’s Barbecue Bacon Ranch

Wendy's BBQ Bacon Ranch

1)      Freshness: 2 out of 3

2)      Type of Lettuce: 2 out of 3

3)      Overall taste. 3 out of 5 – Blending of flavors wasn’t that great.

4)      Crispies. 1 out of 3 – None.

5)      Value for the $ – 2.5 out of 4 – It’s a decent size but the flavor is a little lacking, so that makes it less of a value. and has plenty of taste and variety to make it worth the going price.

6)      Variety of vegetables/ingredients: 3.5 out of 4 – With tomatoes, eggs, cabbage, carrots, and roasted corn kernels, it’s almost perfect, but not quite.

7)      Cheese. 1 out of 3 – The cheese is good, but there’s so little of it.

TOTAL: 13

Panera Thai Salad

panera

1)      Freshness: 3 out of 3

2)      Type of Lettuce: 2.5 out of 3 – A little mixed in not so green.

3)      Overall taste. 3 out of 5

4)      Crispies. 3 out of 3 – .

5)      Value for the $ – 2.5 out of 4 almost 9.00

6)      Variety of vegetables/ingredients: 3.0 out of 4 –. More variety, but not the best tasting ingredients.

7)      Cheese. 2 out of 3 – None,although that type of salad shouldn’t. But I still can’t give it a 3.

TOTAL: 19

Whataburger Garden Salad with Grilled Chicken

whataburger

1)      Freshness: 3 out of 3

2)      Type of Lettuce: 3 out of 3 – Nice and fresh and green.

3)      Overall taste: 4.5 out of 5 – It has a great flavor, I LOVE their grilled chicken, but the flavor would have been improved with a few extra veggies or something added in.

4)      Crispies: 1 out of 3 – Zero.

5)      Value for the $: 4 out of 4 – Nice size, reasonably priced.

6)      Variety of vegetables/ingredients: 2.5 out of 4 – Tomatoes and shredded carrots.

7)      Cheese: 2 out of 3 – The cheese is good, but there’s not enough of it.

TOTAL: 20

So…what do you think? Have you tried any of these salads? Do you agree? Disagree? What are your most and least favorite salads.

As always…feel free to call me out on my math if I got it wrong…it’s not my strong suit 🙂

Annette Miller, with Night Angel, a paranormal novella

True love does conquer all.

Fun Fact:  As a superhero fan, I always loved the fact that the heroes would win. The battles were always epic. Then I got to thinking. Heroes need love too. And the idea was born. I love romance and heroes. It just seemed natural to put them together.

A few lines from the story…

But didn’t this kind of stuff always happen in fairy tales? The path to true love was always filled with obstacles. Yes, she thought. But why does my path have major construction signs?

Melissa Snark with The Mating Game, Erotic Paranormal Novel

Two males…two friends…a competition for the right to claim The Heart of the Iron Stone Pack

Fun Fact:  My hero, Zachary Hunter, is an author of suspense thrillers. Throughout the story, he comically falls prey to many of the foibles of writers everywhere: writer’s block, procrastination, not accepting criticism well, editor issues, people having issues about how his characters should act, and being tuned out to important real life developments because he’s “in the zone”. Most of the jokes are private and I may be the only one who actually think they are funny.

A few lines from the story:

“Oh, Zach.” Theresa sighed into the phone. The sound of her weight shifting atop fabric reached his ears. “What am I going to do with you?”

“I could offer all manner of suggestions.” Zach’s mouth went dry, and his voice had acquired a sultry tone, deliberately suggestive, a hint of the lewd.

Frances Evesham with An Independent Woman, Historical (Victorian) mystery romance Novel

Northanger Abbey meets Downton in Victorian England

Fun Fact: One day, my mother took me to the old Post Office in a tiny English Cotswold village where she grew up. There, I met Great Aunt Annie, a maiden Victorian lady, almost a hundred years old. Tiny and neat, with cotton-wool hair styled in a careful bun at the back of her neck, Aunt Annie bustled about, making cups of tea and cutting slices of fruitcake.

Aunt Annie lived quite alone, content, full of lively interest in the world and its news. She would have adored the internet.

Philomena, the Independent Woman of my novel, is, like Aunt Annie, a Victorian woman: self-sufficient, spirited and capable. The Victorians invented and built things. They engineered steam trains, bridges and factory machinery. Their photographs suggest they were solemn and unsmiling, but that was because they had to keep still for 30 seconds for every shot.

I believe the Victorians were like us inside, nursing their own hopes and dreams of adventure, love and happiness. I’m having fun writing their stories.

A few lines from the story:

Philomena leaped in the air and turned, terrified.

Lord Thatcham, tall and menacing, glowered at her from the doorway, his eyes ablaze with fury.

Marilyn Baron with Homecoming Homicides A Psychic Crystal Mystery Book Two, Mystery and Suspense Novel, Dark romantic suspense with a humorous twist

Psycho Meets Miss Congeniality

Fun Fact: When my daughter was a homecoming contestant at her university in a small North Florida town, I attended the pageant and noticed a man approach each contestant for her autograph on his pageant booklet. That sparked my imagination and was the inspiration for this story. I wondered what would happen if that man was a serial killer. The fictional college town, Graysville, was patterned after the town where I went to college, Gainesville, Florida.

A few lines from the story:

“All right, you immature rat bastard, listen up. I am going to pick up the phone and have you reassigned. It’s obvious we can’t work together if you can’t get over yourself. Okay, we had sex. Let’s just get that out on the table.”

Diana Rubino with A BLOODY GOOD CRUISE, paranormal novel

“How would a ship swarming with vampires liven things up?”

Fun Fact: My husband and I are hooked on cruising, and my very first cruise was on the Eastern Mediterranean, beginning in Rome and ending in Istanbul. The ports of call included Rhodes, Cyprus, Santorini, and Egypt. Because I love Italy and cruising, I wanted to combine those passions with a humorous story about vampires and how they face prejudice in the human world. I met an Italian woman named Fausta in the mid-80s and always loved that name–I always planned to use that name in one of my books someday. I finally got the chance with Fausto, close enough!

A line from the story:

“All the blood has drained from your face, and not in a good way.”

Heidi Wessman Kneale with AS GOOD AS GOLD, paranormal historical novella,

What would you pay for the chance at love?

Fun Fact: In the Seventeenth Century, gold and silver were the standard coinage throughout Europe. However, each country minted their own coins. Even these changed from time to time, often depending on the whimsy of whoever was king at the moment. Our Heroine Daywen Athalia, had she been wealthy enough (she isn’t) to deal with gold coins, she would most likely have been familiar with British Guineas.

Our Hero Bel MacEuros is fond of stealing foreign gold. Here, he has stolen some Bavarian Guilders. It was entirely possible he could have also stolen some Florins, depending on where he was thieving in the German States.

The Gypsy woman Alishandra doesn’t care if her gold is Guineas or Guilders. For her, gold is gold and rather fungible–she’ll take it in any form, unless it’s cursed. Like this gold was.

A few lines from the story:

“Lachlan,” she said, her voice quivering ever so slightly. “Would you marry me?”

He studied her for a moment, then sucked his teeth. “I’d hate tae break your heart. I dinnae want tae marry ya.”

Lynn Shurr with A Wild Red Rose, Contemporary Western Novel

As a rodeo bullfighter, Clint Beck is unafraid of wild things, but can he tame a beautiful gold-digger and win her heart?

Fun Fact: When I began to do research on bull riders for The Convent Rose which preceded A Wild Red Rose, I often watched the Professional Bull Riders on TV and attended rodeos. While I admired the courage of the bull riders, I was even more taken with the bullfighters who put their lives on the line to save a downed rider. They are heroes, too. Those who read the first book know Renee will not be easily tamed. I thought a rodeo bullfighter just might be up to the task.

A few lines from the story:

“But people like us don’t deserve true love.” Renee Niles to Bodey Landrum

Cait Jarrod with Entangled Love, Romantic Suspense novel

In the question of love and death, where does the truth lie?

Fun Fact: My family and I took a trip to California a few years ago. When I started writing the story, the sunny setting came forth as a perfect location for the characters to move forward with their relationship. Santa Monica beach is beautiful.

3 of the author’s favorite lines:

“I’ve wanted you since we were teens” ~ Ryan

He’s making me say it. “I want you.” ~ Emma

Cover Reveal – Hawke’s Nest by Darcy Flynn

I’m happy to present Darcy Flynn’s upcoming release, Hawke’s Nest. I have already had the pleasure of reading the book, and it is fantastic!

And check out this gorgeous cover…

HawkesNest8_850

Blurb:

Running away is nothing new for Annie Dell, aka high-fashion model Anna Delany. With the paparazzi hot on her trail, an out of town wedding couldn’t have come at a more opportune time. What better place to hide out than the quaint Florida beach town Liddy’s told her so much about. But a delayed flight, the mix up with the car rental, then a speeding ticket from the local Sheriff of Nottingham, her getaway is looking anything but relaxing.

Franklin County Sheriff, Levi Hawke, is tired of the spoiled, out-of-control students on fall break, who think they can speed through his county without consequence. After giving a ticket to a beautiful young woman he assumes is just another daddy’s girl looking for some fun in the sun, he discovers she’s his weekend date at his best friend’s wedding.

Through gritted teeth, masked by a half-hearted truce, they survive the weekend, only to find themselves stranded alone in the middle of a hurricane. You can discover a lot about a person while spending thirty-six hours without the comforts of electricity and modern conveniences. When circumstances further extend her stay in town, Levi pries deeper to find out what Annie’s running from. He knows when someone is haunted by their past. As the saying goes … it takes one to know one.

Excerpt:

Annie took a sip of Sauvignon Blanc and glanced at Levi. He had shoved his chair back from the table and sat holding his wine glass in his right hand while perusing her with his keen baby blues.

Openly.

Audaciously.

Fine, she could handle his rude stares. She’d been ogled by far worse than him. She tilted her head to one side and smiled. The smile photographer Dave Mandel of Glamour Magazine claimed was irresistible. Well, no time like the present to put that ridiculous statement to the test.

“So, Sheriff.” She scooted her chair closer to his and the sudden alarm that entered his eyes was delicious. She lifted her glass in the air. “I propose we call a truce. After all, we’re here to celebrate the wedding of your best friend and my best friend. And since we’ve been paired for the weekend, by the matchmaking bride, we may as well make the most of it.”

She gave him her most candid, but coy expression, daring him to disagree. “What do you say?” she coaxed softly.

“How could I deny such an earnest and sincere request?”

Something about the way he said it churned her insides, but she gave nothing away as she smiled brightly at him. Tilting his head in salute, he raised his glass and touched it to hers, the sound of crystal sealing the deal.

Devon McKay with Cowboy On The Run – Contemporary Romance/Novel

Can’t run from love!

Fun Fact: This may make me sound like a nut but, my idea for Cowboy On The Run wasn’t even for a book. It was for a stained glass project I wanted to do. In my spare time, I work with glass and have a small studio in my house. I pictured a pair of worn cowboy boots and an old Stetson leaning against a fence with a braided rope encircling them in an oval and was intent on making the glass piece more than just a good idea.

I had the cowboy hat and the boots, but not the fence. In search of the perfect fence for the background, I talked my husband into driving me to Gettysburg PA from our home in Ohio. I wanted an old rustic civil war like fencing and in my mind no other fence would do! So where better to go? Of course, I could have easily found such a pattern on the internet, or drawn it myself, but my husband and I love to travel, so off we went! (This is one of the images):

IMG_0123

On the way home, I realized the placement of the boots and hat looked as if a cowboy had laid the gear down in a way that he’d be ready to run. The picture sparked the idea for my book. Fortunately, the story was better told with words than with glass.

Linda Joyce with BAYOU BOUND, Contemporary Romance Novel.

When dreams and southern tradition collide, will Biloxi lose Nick forever?

Fun Fact: Bayou Bound won First Place in Romance from the Southeastern Writers Association. InD’tale Magazine reviewed Bayou Bound and awarded it a 4.5 Star rating with a Heart and a Crown. Biloxi Dutrey is very dear to my heart. We share the same birthplace, Biloxi, Mississippi. Her father’s family, like mine, hails from New Orleans, Louisiana. My greatest connection to the man that holds Biloxi’s heart, Nick Trahan, is flying. While Nick’s a pilot, I did take flying lessons, even soloed several times. Unlike Nick, I learned small planes aren’t for me.

Quest for the Best Salad

Chick-fil-A Cobb Salad

Chick fi la Cobb

1) Freshness: 3 out of 3
2) Type of Lettuce: 3 out of 3
3) Overall taste. 4.5 out of 5 – I’ve tried it with the grilled chicken and wasn’t a fan (their grilled chicken has an odd ‘fake’ taste to it that doesn’t quite work for me), but with the chopped up chicken nuggets and the combination of flavors, the overall taste is great.
4) Crispies. 2 out of 3 – Comes with these little red pepper bits which are okay, but I prefer the sunflower seeds they used to serve.
5) Value for the $ – 3 out of 4 – It’s a decent size and has plenty of taste and variety to make it worth the going price.
6) Variety of vegetables/ingredients: 3.5 out of 4 – With tomatoes, eggs, cabbage, carrots, and roasted corn kernels, it’s almost perfect, but not quite.
7) Cheese. 2 out of 3 – The cheese is good, but there’s so little of it.

TOTAL: 21

Jason’s Deli Chicken Club

Jason's Deli Chicken Club no Avacados

1) Freshness: 3 out of 3
2) Type of Lettuce: 2 out of 3 – They have the darker lettuce, which is great, but there’s a bit of iceberg mixed in there, too much for my taste.
3) Overall taste. 4 out of 5
4) Crispies. 1 out of 3 – Zero crispies provided. And I know they have plenty of different varieties on the salad bar.
5) Value for the $ – 3 out of 4
6) Variety of vegetables/ingredients: 2.5 out of 4 – The picture doesn’t show it, but the salad includes avocado. Avocado hurts my stomach, so I had them leave it off. In addition to that, the salad has grape tomatoes, but again, with all they have to offer on the salad bar, they could have thrown in some carrots or olives.
7) Cheese. 3 out of 3 – LOTS of yummy cheese, the mixture of white and yellow is just perfect.
TOTAL: 18.5

McDonald’s Bacon Chicken Ranch

McDonald's bacon Chicken Ranch

1) Freshness: 2 out of 3 – Honestly, I thought this would get a 1 because the salads I’ve had at McDonalds before tasted as though they’d been sitting for hours. This one was a little fresher, but not quite fresh enough.
2) Type of Lettuce: 1 out of 3 – Iceberg city, but it doesn’t get a 0 because at least the lettuce wasn’t brown.
3) Overall taste. 2.5 out of 5 – It was okay, good enough I might try it again in a pinch, but not great.
4) Crispies. 1 out of 3 – Zero.
5) Value for the $ – 2.5 out of 4 – It’s a decent size but the taste is a little sub par, at any price.
6) Variety of vegetables/ingredients: 1 out of 4 – Pretty much just tomatoes.
7) Cheese. 2 out of 3 – The cheese is decent, but again, there’s so little of it.
TOTAL: 11

So…what do you think? Have you tried any of these salads? Do you agree? Disagree? What are your most and least favorite salads.

By the way…feel free to call me out on my math if I got it wrong…it’s not my strong suit 🙂
