Ramblings of a Lifelong Elvis Fan – Part 60 – The Stories Behind the Songs

Listening to Sirius XM Elvis radio, I am privy to all kinds of heretofore unknown tidbits, many times, straight from the mouths of those who were there. I’ve heard a lot of interesting facts about songs Elvis performed, and I’d like to share some of those with you…

In the Ghetto (Written by Mac Davis, recorded by Elvis in 1969)

This was a huge hit for Elvis. Elvis added the last line himself, where he repeats: “And his momma cries”

Mac Davis on how the song came to be:

“I grew up in Lubbock, Texas, and it was a ghetto in every since of the word, but we didn’t use that word back then. I was trying to come up with a song called ‘The Vicious Circle,’ how a child is born, he has no father, and the same thing happens. The word ‘Ghetto’ became popular in the late ’60s to describe the poor parts of town. A friend of mine, Freddy Weller, who used to play guitar for Paul Revere And The Raiders, showed me lick on the guitar one day. I went home and fiddled around with it, I wrote the song and called him up at 4 in the morning and sang it to him. He called me a dirty name and hung up on me. He knew I’d written a hit with his lick, but that’s the way it goes.”

Don’t Cry Daddy  (Written by Mac Davis, recorded by Elvis in 1969)

Again, in Mac’s own words…

“At the time I was going through a divorce. I had my son, Scotty, for the weekend and was about to take him home. I had some time to kill, and I flipped on the five o’clock news. Scotty was about five or six years old. It just happened to be the broadcast where they were showing some film of the massacre in Vietnam. It was a very famous horrific incident where some of our guys shot to death some women and children villagers. They were showing some scenes of the bodies, and apparently I started crying and didn’t even realize it. The next thing I know Scotty was patting my back and trying to comfort a grown man going, “Don’t cry daddy.” That’s where the inspiration came from for “Don’t Cry Daddy.” My songwriter’s brain made it totally different. By the time I got Scotty home to his mother’s…on the way back to my house I had the chorus written.”

This song was recorded in 1997 as a duet with Lisa Marie, with Elvis’ voice dubbed in.

One Night  (Written by Dave Bartholomew and Earl King, recorded by Elvis in 1957)

Elvis first recorded the original version in January, 1957: One Night of Sin. His manager and record company felt the lyrics were too suggestive and risque, so the lyrics were changed (some say by Elvis himself) and the song became and was re-recorded as “One Night With You,” a mega hit for Elvis. Here is the original version:

All Shook Up  (Written by Otis Blackwell, recorded by Elvis in 1957)

According to songwriter Otis Blackwell, he was trying to come up with a follow-up song to “Don’t Be Cruel.” He used to joke that he could write a pop song from any phrase or theme.  In the autumn of 1956, one Blackwell’s bosses at his publishing offices dropped an unopened bottle of Pepsi on the ground. When he removed the cap, the soda exploded all over his white shirt. In frustration, Blackwell’s boss slammed the half-emptied Pepsi bottle on Blackwell’s desk. “There,” he said, tersely. “Write a song about that.” Blackwell studied the bottle closely for about a couple of seconds before finally shaking it again. Legend has it, he wrote the lyrics to “All Shook Up” before the bubbles had completely settled back into the beverage.

Softly as I leave you (Composed in Italian by Giorgio Calabrese and Tony De Vita. English songwriter Hal Shaper added English lyrics to it in 1961. This song wasn’t actually recorded by Elvis, but was only done in concerts.)

Elvis told a story about the song when he performed it in Vegas. Elvis said that he’d heard the story from some people in Florida. It was based on a man, who was dying. His wife was sitting by his bedside. As she began to doze off, he felt himself beginning to die and he wrote the words to the song on a notepad. Supposedly, Elvis insiders claim that this explanation was just an example of his flair for storytelling, so it likely isn’t accurate. If that’s so, then it just goes to show Elvis had a creative imagination. No matter whether it’s true or not, I think it’s pretty awesome. Side note:  Elvis doesn’t actually sing this song; he speaks the words while his backing tenor Sherrill Nielsen sings it.

Heartbreak Hotel: (Written by Tommy Durden and Mae Boren Axton, recorded by Elvis in 1956)

I’m sure you’ve all heard this story, I think I’ve told it on my blog before, but it’s highly interesting, to me, so I’m sharing again. The below is from the article found at this link: http://performingsongwriter.com/heartbreak-hotel/

A suicide note was the unlikely inspiration behind the song that became Elvis’ first No. 1 hit and million-selling single.

Steel guitarist and session musician Tommy Durden read a newspaper article about a man who had killed himself, leaving behind a piece of paper with the haunting words: “I walk a lonely street.”

Durden brought the article to his friend and cowriter Mae Boren Axton. A 41-year-old high school English teacher who moonlighted as a journalist and a songwriter, Axton had notched a few hits in the early ’50s with artists such as Perry Como and Ernest Tubb. In late 1955, she took a part-time position as a public relations secretary for Elvis’ manger, Colonel Tom Parker. When Mae first met Elvis, she felt he had everything he needed to become a star except a hit song. “You need a million-seller and I’m going to write it for you,” she promised.

As Axton and Durden discussed how they could turn the newspaper article into a song, Axton suggested that there be a “heartbreak hotel” at the end of the lonely street. With that flash of inspiration, the pair was off and running. Painting a picture of a place where “broken-hearted lovers cry away their gloom” and “the desk clerk’s dressed in black,” they managed to convey in very few words a mood that was both romantically charged and funereal.

Side note: Elvis purchased his first home, the one on Audubon Drive, with the money he made from Heartbreak Hotel.

Are You Lonesome Tonight: (Written by y Roy Turk and Lou Handman in 1926, recorded by Elvis in 1960)

I remember, right after Elvis passed away, this was probably the hardest song to listen to. The lyrics, ‘If you won’t come back to me, then they can bring the curtain down’ made my sisters and I sob uncontrollably. :/

Elvis was reluctant to record this song, because he was afraid he couldn’t do it justice. His manager, Tom Parker, convinced him to do so, because it was his wife’s favorite song. (And, you guessed it, huge hit!) Supposedly, Elvis had the studio lights completely turned off while recording the song. As he finished, he bumped into a chair, knocking it over, and the sound can be heard if you listen to the record on headphones.

Side note: The spoken part is loosely based on a speech by Jacques in Shakespeare’s As You Like It, Act II Scene VII:

All the world’s a stage, and all men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts.

A version of Elvis performing the song on stage and getting so tickled he can’t finish the song, aptly named, The Laughing Version, is extremely popular with fans. It’s adorable…take a listen:

I hope you’ll actually take the time to listen to these videos, they are awesome, amazing, fantastic. (And I’m not just saying that because I’m an obsessive Elvis fan, honest I’m not ;))

EOLS Charity

Elvis was known for his giving heart and charitable work during his lifetime. Lisa Marie and Elvis Presley Enterprises have continued that tradition with their involvement in various charities. In 1984, The Elvis Charitable Foundation was formed. The EPCF created a scholarship fund for students majoring in the arts. The charity also contributes to one of Elvis’ favorite charities, Goodwill Homes, a Memphis facility that provides counseling and services for abused children and their families. The EPCF also assists numerous other charities, especially focusing on arts, education and children’s programs.

Ramblings of a Lifelong Elvis Fan – Part 59 – Why We Love Elvis

Well, the title might be a little misleading and/or redundant. The whole concept of my blogging each Friday about Elvis has to do with why I love him, but I wanted to share a post my sister and Elvis buddy, Ruth Robertson Zimmerman posted to Facebook on the anniversary of Elvis’ death. I believe she sums it up pretty well…

11899946_10206329452627022_491566853508802083_n

I just have to share what is on my heart & mind today….
I can’t believe I was 13 when I lost Elvis & that it’s been 38 years.
I know how a lot of people think of him..talking about him eating cheeseburgers (don’t we all love them?) or him being a druggie (he took prescription drugs & never had an iv put in his arm so he could be given anesthesia type drugs) or about him dying on the toilet (he didn’t…they found him on the floor) but that just means you don’t see Elvis through my eyes for who he truly was!
Elvis is my comforter…when life has made me so sad nothing else will do.
Elvis is my entertainment…no song, no movie, no documentary will ever be better in my life. (From Alicia – PLEASE watch this…wow, it’s spectacular…)

Elvis is goodness thru & thru…when I thought the entertainment world had gone to Hell in a handbasket, he proved different.

wow312097dafc53cd110c6b62f0
Elvis is love…I have never & will never love another mortal human that I have never met more than I love him.
Elvis is family…not a part of MY family but he was/is such a commonality with me & my close sisters.
Elvis is gorgeous…I have never looked at a picture on anything or anywhere that trips my trigger like he does.

wow9f33732b4d3ee7a6d1fd995f
Elvis is memories…some of the best I have. Especially the 3 concerts I got to go to with my sisters…and getting to finally go to Memphis with my sister Alicia!
Elvis is dedication…he was so dedicated to his fans…it killed him. I was one of them…does that make me guilty?? I sure feel that way sometimes.
Elvis is Godly…no matter how famous, rich, or adored he was…he never ever forsook his upbringing. You can guarantee every concert he performed, there would be a gospel song or 2 included.
Elvis is respect…I loved the way he loved his momma! I have one I feel the same way about!
Elvis is laughter…I have cracked up so many people over the way I adore him! Imagine the fun I have trying to explain it!
and finally….
Elvis is heartbreak…I will always believe his life changed who I was…I know his death has. It’s a hurt I feel quite often. I cry sometimes…still!
But especially today…August 16th…as I mourn the 1st love I lost!

I have to agree with Ruth (no surprise there, right? :)). Even now, while I’m still sad over his death, listening to Elvis or watching one of his movies makes me happy. I am especially grateful to Elvis Radio on Sirius, because not only can I listen to him 24/7 in my car (well, in actuality, since I own almost every song he’s ever recorded, other than the rate, outtake songs, I could listen to Elvis CD’s 24/7), but I also appreciate the interviews with people who knew him, the little details we get to learn about him that we never knew. And, I love that so many of today’s and past entertainers do promo plugs on the station, I’ve heard Paul McCartney, Michael Buble, George Jones, and many others plug Elvis radio. So cool!

I’m very grateful to have grown up with sisters who loved Elvis, a mother who loved him, and a father who understood. 🙂

Demon Lore by Karilyn Bentley – PLUS a Fun Fact & Favorite Line

Book One in an exciting new series from The Wild Rose Press…

Karilyn Bentley with Demon Lore, an urban fantasy novel

Will Gin discover who wants her dead before she becomes the next victim in the ongoing battle?

Fun Fact:

I wrote this book a couple of years ago for a contest my RWA chapter held to meet an agent. The agent didn’t want it, but my publisher did. The original first chapter has been eliminated, a complete rewrite, and it reads a lot better. However, I do like that scene and am trying to decide if I want to place it in another book in the series.

A favorite line or two:

Blue sky peeks through gaps in the leaves as I suck down air into shocked-still lungs. Did I slip on a stone or did Mr. You-Don’t-Need-A-Caffeine-Hit just sweep my feet out from under me?

I am pleased to host two new releases on my blog today. I’ve read Tequila Dirty, and it’s a fun read. You should definitely check it out. Heart Shifter looks wonderful as well. Read on to learn about both of these stories and please follow the authors on Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Charlotte Copper with Heart Shifter, Paranormal romance novella

Hot summer. Cool water. Dark secrets

Fun fact:

I once spent a week sailing in the North Channel – the location for Heart Shifter. It’s absolutely beautiful!

A few favorite lines:

“Oh, this is nothing,” he said with a chuckle. Putting the pie plate down, he leaned forward and rested his elbows on the counter. “Would you like a piece?”

Mickey J. Corrigan with Tequila Dirty, romantic crime comedy novella

Detective Liam Donell is in trouble when he lets Rita Deltone, a hot chick from the sticks, have her say on a Dusky Beach murder case.

Fun fact:

I wrote the first half of the novella as a short story. It ended with Rita Deltone still “trussed up” in the hospital bed, hitting on the man who is interviewing her. I brought the story to my writing group and they laughed out loud while reading it. But it felt incomplete. So I decided to explore what might happen if the detective on the case untied Rita to give her the chance to prove her innocence. That’s how Liam Donell entered the picture. Although he had been there all along, the silent brooding cop on the case. Observing her. Falling for her.

A few favorite lines:

When he said, “How would you like to make ten K in a single night, no strings attached,” you can’t blame me for sinking into a fake leatherette booth while he fetched us a round. Ten thousand dollars? Might as well be a million. What I could do with that kind of dough. I could change my freaking life.

M.J. Schiller Shares What She Knows About Ireland and Her New Release, DAMAGE DONE

Write what you know, they tell me. And you can find pieces of me in all of my books. My marriage proposal? See UPON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR.  That bike jump over the creek my brother did when I was eight? HOMETOWN HEARTACHE, coming next year. And every one of Heath’s ex-girlfriend’s in BETWEEN ROCK AND A HARD PLACE is my bestfriend, Kelly. She also has a prominent role in a few of my other books.  So what parts of me pop up in my newest release, DAMAGE DONE? My trip to Ireland, of course!

In 2003 I was lucky enough to go to Ireland with my big sister, my mom, and her friend, Joanne. We flew into Shannon airport and headed straight to our bed & breakfast. We were exhausted from the flight as even I—who can usually nap anywhere, anytime—was unable to sleep on the plane. The b&b’s owner, who was cutting her husband’s hair in the kitchen when we arrived, shooed us off, warning us that jet lag would “be the death of us” if we so much as closed our eyes. So we were off to Bunratty Castle and Durty Nelley’s, a pub. We had a traditional Irish dinner at the castle and were entertained by Irish dancers. The next day we did the obligatory visit to Blarney Castle and kissed the great stone. (Which is a terrifying experience, for those who haven’t done it. You lie down and bend backward, scootching until your rump is off the castle stone, hanging out in thin air, with no one holding your legs, stories up. I still can’t believe I did it!)

From there we headed to what was to become our home base of sorts, our cottage on the Old Head of Kinsale, where a great deal of the action takes place in DAMAGE DONE. There is a grotto there, as described in the book, and a church and store. Hurley’s which soon became “our pub,” is what Tad McGregor’s pub in the book is based on, although Tad’s place is different in a number of ways. Our hero Michael and heroine Tess run off to Cork together, one of the next stops on our 2003 trip. I used what I could from my memories, and did some research for the rest. Some of the characters’ names are from my own family tree.

Here are some photos from our trip…

Much of the story is from my own twisted imagination, though.  🙂  I’ve never seen a lighthouse home such as Teddy and Gabby share, and don’t know where that came from. I’ve never made a sand octopus or stolen groceries from the back of a pickup truck. I’ve never even taken a bike ride like Sean and Gabby do, but I’d like to think I captured a taste of what it would be like. From where I stand, a little mishmash of fact and fiction makes for a good story. So here’s a blurb and excerpt from DAMAGE DONE. I hope you enjoy it!

DamageDone_CVR_MED(1)

Blurb ~

When an unhappy youth leaves him damaged, will Teddy Mckee be able to find love?

“Teddy Passmore McKee was born in Cork, Ireland, with a limp and a chip on his shoulder that threw his balance off all the more.” When he falls in love with the dark haired beauty born of an Irish father and a Spanish mother, will Gabrielle Quinn be able to restore his balance? And what about the charming Sean Hennessey? When Gabby catches his eye, too, will Teddy’s playboy best friend cause his own damage?

Fourteen years later, will Teddy and Gabrielle’s son be able to overcome the damage done to him in his childhood?

“Even through bloodshot eyes he could see she was different.”  But can Michael leave behind the bottle, and his womanizing ways, to win over the lovely Tess Flanagan? Tess has sustained some damage of her own. Can she and Michael overcome the terrors of the past and learn how to love each other?

And if they do, will they be able to elude those after them who want to create their own damage?

On the run after an altercation leaves their boss in a pool of blood, will Michael and Tess be able to stay one step ahead of their pursuers? Or is it simply too late to correct the damage that has been done?

Excerpt ~

“Tessie…” He offered again. “We have to get out of here.”

She remained frozen in her spot, staring blindly over the cliff. He moved a step closer and gently grasped her elbow. “Tess—”

She whirled around and his heart caught in his chest as he stared into her wild green eyes. Tears shone on her damp cheeks, glimmering in the moonlight like trails of scattered diamonds. “Nay, Michael,” she said, her words coming out choked. “I have to tell them the truth. It’s my fault. …I k-killed him.” She sobbed.

He looked at her sadly, begging her, “Let me help you.”

The back door creaked open and light spilled out from the bar across the grass, startling them. He saw Jimmy Flynn’s outline in the doorway. “They’re out here!” he yelled.

Without waiting for a response, Michael took Tess’s arm and steered her along the cliff’s edge. He stepped over the railing and helped her to the other side as well. They stood on a narrow ledge. To the left a trail dropped off toward the sea. He led her skittering down the path, loose rock pebbling the beach far below. He had taken the pathway many a night when he was drunk and feeling particularly reckless. Tonight he hurried over it with only self-preservation and Tess’s safety in mind.

They heard voices above them, coming from every direction as searchers fanned out along the top of the cliff. Their eyes met. They hardly dared to breathe. A flashlight beam ventured over the railing and along the cliff face. She clutched his hand, squeezing it until he lost feeling in his fingers. He tried to flatten himself even more tightly against the rock face, wishing it would somehow melt and absorb them. Several seconds passed and the beam of light was joined by another, and another, each swinging away, and then toward them again.

He grabbed a quick look at the churning sea below then closed his eyes for a second, and his stomach dropped. He took a deep breath before turning his head to look at Tess. Her eyes were closed and her lips were moving fervently, but she emitted no sound. He swallowed, wondering again why the sight of her affected him so. After several minutes a voice called out, “You won’t get away with this, Mikey.” Had someone seen them? He heard Jimmy Flynn mutter, “Wherever they are, we won’t find them tonight.” One by one the lights disappeared until only a solitary beam shone.

Devon McKay with Cowboy On The Run – Contemporary Romance/Novel

Can’t run from love!

Fun Fact: This may make me sound like a nut but, my idea for Cowboy On The Run wasn’t even for a book. It was for a stained glass project I wanted to do. In my spare time, I work with glass and have a small studio in my house. I pictured a pair of worn cowboy boots and an old Stetson leaning against a fence with a braided rope encircling them in an oval and was intent on making the glass piece more than just a good idea.

I had the cowboy hat and the boots, but not the fence. In search of the perfect fence for the background, I talked my husband into driving me to Gettysburg PA from our home in Ohio. I wanted an old rustic civil war like fencing and in my mind no other fence would do! So where better to go? Of course, I could have easily found such a pattern on the internet, or drawn it myself, but my husband and I love to travel, so off we went! (This is one of the images):

IMG_0123

On the way home, I realized the placement of the boots and hat looked as if a cowboy had laid the gear down in a way that he’d be ready to run. The picture sparked the idea for my book. Fortunately, the story was better told with words than with glass.

Fun Fact: Bayou Bound won First Place in Romance from the Southeastern Writers Association. InD’tale Magazine reviewed Bayou Bound and awarded it a 4.5 Star rating with a Heart and a Crown. Biloxi Dutrey is very dear to my heart. We share the same birthplace, Biloxi, Mississippi. Her father’s family, like mine, hails from New Orleans, Louisiana. My greatest connection to the man that holds Biloxi’s heart, Nick Trahan, is flying. While Nick’s a pilot, I did take flying lessons, even soloed several times. Unlike Nick, I learned small planes aren’t for me.

Want, Wed, Waste: Cowboys

Hello and welcome to my version of the game, ‘F*@#’, Marry, Kill. This week we are WWW’ing Actors in Cowboy Roles.

Myself and some of my friends are sharing our Want, Wed, and Waste choices from this week’s list:

Clint Eastwood, Tom Selleck OR Sam Elliott, Paul Newman as Butch Cassidy

clint Sam&Tom Paul-Newman-as-Butch-Cassidy

Me (Alicia Dean). Author of DEATH NOTICE (Northland Crime Chronicles, Book 1)  – A killer has something to say, and he’s using her obituary column to get his point across…

Want: Clint Eastwood. YUMMM….I have always found him exceptionally sexy. I admire his talent and brilliance so much. I am beyond amazed at how he keeps directing and starring in phenomenal movies, even in his eighties. And, yes, I would still ‘want’ him just like he is at this moment. STILL sexy!

Wed: Paul Newman. His blue eyes and sexy smile, sigh… I adored Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, among the other Paul Newman/Robert Redford movie pairings. Paul was gorgeous and from what I can gather, a terrific husband.

Waste: Sam and Tom. UGH…sooooo hard. But, unlike some of my fellow authors, I’m following the rules. SO, I must waste these two gorgeous, rugged, sexy cowboys. Now, before I waste them, I would, uh…have some fun. 😉

**********************

JANNINE GALLANT, author of ASKING FOR TROUBLE ~ Will a demon in a diaper bring them together—or tear them apart forever? Available FREE on Amazon now until Feb. 22nd!   Website: http://www.janninegallant.com/

Want: This is easy. Clint Eastwood in his Spaghetti Western days is just too, too sexy. That glimmering stare and go to hell attitude. Oh my! He can carry me off into the sunset on a horse any day.

Wed: Paul Newman (sigh). Those baby blues look straight into your soul. And talk about handsome… I’d have to marry him because he must know how to cook with all those food lines. Right?

Waste: Sorry Sam. The man never did much for me. As for Tom Selleck—rugged and sexy without a doubt, but I’m not a fan of mustaches. I’d have to waste them both!

**********************

Darcy Flynn, author of Rogue’s Son – Kit doesn’t need a man, thank you very much! Website/Blog: www.darcyflynnromances.com

Want: Clint, you’re one cool guy and handsome to boot. Your ‘spaghetti westerns’ always called to me. Yep, I’d enjoy a fling in one of those honky-tonks!

Wed: That’s easy. Tom Selleck. He’s tall, dark and extremely good-looking. And that twinkle in his eye does something to my innards. J Plus, I’ve always wanted to kiss a man with a mustache! Sigh

Waste: Paul “Butch Cassidy” Newman, normally, you’d be my man. You’re adorable and your piercing, blue eyes make me swoon. But, since you die in the end anyway, I guess I’ll have to let you go.

**********************

Linda Carroll-Bradd is the author of contemporary rodeo story, Tie Down My Heart. Website www.lindacarroll-bradd.com

Want—Paul Newman—I had a major crush on him in high school. Went to see “Butch Cassidy” 6 times in the movie theatre in its initial release—which was fairly unheard of among my friends.

Wed—Sam Elliott—who wouldn’t want to listen to his gorgeous voice every single day? Even now, I don’t fast-forward through whatever commercial (beef or trucks) when I hear his voice-over.

Waste—Clint Eastwood—can’t get all those Italian-made westerns out of my head and hate squinty eyes in a hero

**********************

SILVER JAMES, author of THAT OL’ BLACK MAGIC (Werewolves, Fae, and Dragons, oh my! What’s Sade Marquis, a human FBI agent, to do? Solve the crime, of course.), Website: http:/www.silverjames.com

Want: Sam Elliott AND Tom Selleck. There is no way I’m going to choose between these two! Want them both. Like now, please! *waggles brows* I mean, I fell into a potted plant for Sam (seriously!) and I’ve had a thing for Tom without his shirt on since forever.

Wed: Since I’m not a polygamist, I’ll marry either Sam or Tom. Or maybe I’ll move somewhere where I *could* marry both. Because, damn. The sexy just doesn’t stop with those two. I could stare and listen (among other things) all freaking day for the rest of my life.

Waste: Sorry Paul Newman and Clint Eastwood. Y’all are really nice and all but seriously, if I have Sam and Tom, I don’t need anyone else. At all. Ever. *nods*

 **********************

Diane Burton, author of ONE RED SHOE (wannabe writer rescues wounded spy while risking her heart). Buy link:  http://amzn.com/B00FDXRHZA  Website:  www.dianeburton.com

Want: Sam Elliott and Tom Selleck. Whoo-hoo. A two-fer. A menage? Nah. One at a time. Love Sam’s voice. He just keeps getting better. Tom? I’ve had a crush on him since Magnum P.I. (Oops, just reread the instructions. I’m supposed to choose? No way. I’m leaving this.)

Wed: Paul Newman. OMG. His grin, his eyes. (notice which I listed first) His faithfulness in real life to Joanne. <swoon>

Waste: Clint Eastwood Sorry. I did enjoy all the spaghetti westerns. Loved him in Two Mules for Sister Sara. But I can’t get past his behavior at the Republican convention.

Qwillia Rain, author of Looking at Rose: Poker Posse 1 — Never underestimate a Southern mama’s determination to find the right man for her little girl —  Website/Blog: http://authorqwilliarain.blogspot.com

*** – Qwilla is offering a copy of  Looking at Rose: Poker Posse 1 for one person who comments to the blog.

Want: Paul Newman, he has classic good looks, but his intelligence, quick wit, and sex appeal make him too attractive to overlook.  Although I doubt very much he’d ever give in. An interviewer once asked if he’d ever been tempted to stray after he married Joanne Woodward. His response: Why go out for hamburger when you’ve got steak at home? The man was intelligent, charismatic, and dedicated.

Wed: Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott (I’ll take both of them, they can figure out how to divvy up the time, LOL) Love both men’s voices, their looks, and their self-effacing manner. Both of the men have fascinated me since I was young. They are strong, dedicated, and determined. Shadow Riders exhibited characters who would never give up to retrieve the women they loved, and that they would make their kidnappers pay for the crime with their lives.

Waste: Clint Eastwood. Despite how much I loved him in the westerns and his run on Rawhide (not to mention the great performances in Trouble with the Curve and Absolute Power) I would have to waste Clint Eastwood simply because he honestly doesn’t appeal to me sexually. Never has.

**********************

Nancy Fraser, author of  A Saved Woman, part of the Lawmen and Outlaws series from The Wild Rose Press. “She was used merchandise, stale bread. How could she ever hope for the love of a good man.” Available now through Kindle Select.

Want: Tom Selleck, not just as a cowboy but in any role he’s ever played (except perhaps the gay newscaster in the movie In and Out). He’s aged very gracefully and is even sexier now. Plus, look at those long fingers! <Fans self!>

Wed: Paul Newman. Loved his sense of humor in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. How can you not admire the man, his charitable causes, and his long and adoring marriage to Joanne Woodward. That was one lucky lady! And, of course, those eyes!

Waste: Clint Eastwood. I’ve never been a Clint Eastwood fan and can’t remember a time when I ever thought of him as sexy.

Wednesday’s Want, Wed, Waste: Australian Actors

Hello and welcome to my version of the game, ‘F*@#’, Marry, Kill. This week we are WWW’ing Australian actors (Hmmm….I guess for people who live in Australia, they’re simply ‘actors’.)

Myself and some of my friends are sharing our Want, Wed, and Waste choices from this week’s list:

Chris Hemsworth, Hugh Jackman, Guy Pearce

chris jackman pearce

Click on book titles below to learn more and to be taken to a buy link

********************************************

Me (Alicia Dean). Author of two Vampire Diaries Kindle Worlds books: What the Heart Wants and Divine EnemyWhile Damon and Stefan try to control Elena’s blood-lust, the race for the cure takes a shocking detour

Want: This is tough, but I’ll have to say Guy Pearce. He’s sexy and an incredible actor. I have to think of him in movies like Memento rather than Lawless, because then I would definitely want to waste him. Over and over. But that just shows what an amazing actor he is.

Wed: Hugh Jackman. He’s also sexy, and a great actor, and he’d probably make a better husband than Guy Pearce (I’m just going by instinct but if my husband instinct was all that honed, I probably wouldn’t be divorced :)) The most recent movie I saw of his was Prisoners. And if I were going to have a husband and if we were going to have a child kidnapped, I can’t think of anyone else I would want as the father. Freakin’ awesome movie, if you haven’t seen it. Not crazy about the end, but nothing’s perfect, right? (PLEASE no spoilers if you comment on this – I’ve seen it but I hate spoilers so much, I don’t even want others so see them!)

Waste: Dangit…it will have to be Chris Hemsworth. This was really, really tough. I couldn’t use a pic from Thor or Snow White and the Huntsman, or I definitely could not have wasted him. He simply lost the draw, and while he’s gorgeous and sexy and adorable, he hasn’t been around as long as the other two, so he doesn’t have their ‘staying power’. 😉 Yet. I’m willing to give him the test of time.

********************************************

Linda Carroll-Bradd, author of sweet contemporary Gingerbread Wishes.

Want: Chris Hemsworth, droolworthy in his roles in Thor, Avengers and Snow White and The Huntsman. I just love brooding he-men.

Wed:  Hugh Jackman, because he appears to be a real gentleman and devoted to his family.

Waste:   Guy Pearce, probably I’m reacting to his depth as an actor but his depictions of dark characters makes me believe he’s not the nicest person in the world.

********************************************

SILVER JAMES, author of THAT OL’ BLACK MAGIC, When guilt and innocence come to play in the French Quarter, it’ll take Sade’s brand of crazy to sort it all out, Website: http://silverjames.com

Silver is offering a free digital copy of THAT OL’ BLACK MAGIC in the winner’s choice of formats!!! – Please be sure to leave your email address in the comment section.

Want: Chris Hemsworth- OMG! Talk about man candy! I want to tangle my fingers in his hair and explore his abs with my….well, nevermind! Suffice it to say that this guy can use his hammer on me. Any. Way. He. Wants!

Wed: Hugh Jackman – I’ve crushed on Hugh since forever. Whether he’s the Wolverine or Curly in Oklahoma, or the man out of time in Kate & Leopold, I melt whenever he appears. He’s such a romantic. And darn if he isn’t a family man to boot. Sadly, I’d have to fight his wife for him, but I think I can take her! 😉

Waste: Guy Pearce – Poor Guy. I have to waste someone and the other two choices are no brainers for me. So, Guy? Sorry, but you’re the odd man out.

********************************************

M.J. Schiller, author of TRAPPED UNDER ICE, They come from two separate worlds. Will they be able to bridge the gap?  Website: http://www.mjschillerauthor.blogspot.com

Want: This was a no-brainer for me. Chris Hemsworth is scorching hot! So hot, I don’t think I could marry him because we’d never leave the bedroom and might, quite possibly, starve.

Wed: Definitely get the Hugh Jackman appeal, too. It’s the intense eyes, if you ask me. He also just seems like a stand-up kind of guy. And if you had any problems, he could just go all Wolverine on them, which is a plus.

Waste: Guy Pearce. I had to Google this one. He has a lot of different looks, this guy! Some I found very appealing, some…not so much. So, because I had to look you up Mr. Pearce and go to all that effort typing your name into the search field, I’m gonna have to waste you. Sorry.

********************************************

Qwillia Rain, author of Looking At Rose: Poker Posse 1 Website: http://authorqwilliarain.blogspot.com

Want: Chris Hemsworth…he looks good in and out of jeans and armor , and the things I could do with that cape he wears as Thor, mmm. He just seems awful young to make it through the long haul (plus he did a great job playing Jim Kirk’s dad in the latest remake of Star Trek). I wouldn’t mind teaching him all the right moves. LOL

Wed: Hugh Jackman…the man is multi-talented. I actually got to see him perform as Curly in Oklahoma on the London stage before his debut as Wolverine in the first X-Men movie. He can dance, he can sing, and man oh man, he blushed every time Halle Berry had her top off in Swordfish! How sweet is that!? No worries of this man straying. Plus, even when he’s playing a shady character he’s an excellent anti-hero.

Waste: Guy Pearce…I have to admit he is a talented actor. I’ve enjoyed him in The Time Machine, Iron Man 3, and LA Confidential, but there’s just something about him that makes me feel like I should weigh everything he says and does against what his motivations and intentions are, plus his ability to make you truly despise how nasty and manipulative his characters are just make me want to take a shower and wash the “ick” away when the movie is over. He makes an excellent villain, and an interesting tortured hero, still, of the three he’s on the bottom of my list

********************************************

Kathy L Wheeler, author of Quotable (Now free!)  Website: http://kathylwheeler.com

Want: Hugh Jackman, but okay, I’ll take Guy Pearce for a want too. Because I’d rather marry Hugh Jackman and keep him for the long term.

Wed: Hugh Jackman, because he could sing to me every morning and every night and I want that forever!!!!

Waste: Chris Hemsworth is nice to look at but he has a baby face. I’m so sorry, Chris. I’ll have to waste you…

******************************************

Now we’d like to hear from you….which of these sexy Australian Actors would you Want, Wed, Waste?

Thanks for playing!

An Inside Look at Another Man’s Treasure with Anna Kittrell

I am supremely honored to introduce my guest today. Anna Kittrell is not only a fabulous author, but she’s my friend. And, she is one of the nicest, most pleasant and funny people you’ll ever meet. I had the privilege of being her editor for Another Man’s Treasure. I enjoyed every moment of it, not only because I was working with Anna, but also because the book is fantastic. I interviewed Anna, so read below for an inside look at the author and her romantic suspense, Another Man’s Treasure.

DSCF0442

What was the inspiration behind Another Man’s Treasure?

Twenty-five years ago, a retail photographer had a two-day assignment at the clothing store where I worked. Between customers, we visited, our small talk turning to his photography. He told me before becoming a photographer, he’d worked as a garbage collector. He said every morning on his trash route he saw people through kitchen windows drinking coffee and reading newspapers.

One morning, while looking through one of those ordinary windows, he made an extraordinary decision. He no longer wanted to be on the outside looking in. In that single defining moment, he purposed to be on the inside looking out. He quit his job as a garbage collector and enrolled in photography school. He’d been happily following his calling ever since.

In Another Man’s Treasure, Deason McKindle is also a manual laborer on the outside looking in. Though his dreams are of fighting fires, not snapping photographs, Deason has also made an extraordinary decision.

Now if he could only figure out how to follow his calling with a dead man standing between him and his dream…

Do you write in other genres, in addition to romantic suspense?

Yes. I also write young adult. WITCHA’BE, the first book in my Redbend High series, is a Christian suspense. Here is a bit about the book:

New to the small community of Redbend, Molly Sanders is delighted when she and Lenni Flemming become instant friends during the final weeks of her first Oklahoma summer. However, Bianca Ravenwood, Lenni’s best friend and self-proclaimed witch in training, is less than thrilled. In fact, she’s cursing mad, vowing to destroy Molly while honing her craft in the halls of Redbend High School. Molly’s new school becomes a waking nightmare as Bianca, beautiful wannabe witch, targets her in a jealous rage. Plagued by terrifying, inexplicable occurrences and an embarrassing case of panic-induced hiccups, Molly is unable to escape Bianca’s snare. But if Bianca refuses to back down and Molly refuses to stand up, not only will Molly lose the best friend she’s ever had…she may also lose her sanity.

The series tracks three main characters, Molly, Lenni, and Bianca, on their four year journey through the halls of Redbend High School. The second book, DIZZY BLONDE, is under contract with Prism Book Group, and is nearing the editing stages. I am currently working on book three, LINEAGE. One final book will follow, completing the four book series.

What book have you read that you wish you would have written?

My sixteen-year-old daughter came downstairs a few evenings ago, sobbing. Afraid something terrible had happened, I jumped up from the couch and hugged her. “I finished my book,” she hitched out.

When she returned upstairs, I turned to my husband and said, “I want to write THAT book.”

It was called “The Killer’s Tears,” by  Anne-Laure. I read it the next day. I cried too—but not as hard as she did.

What do you love that most people don’t like and wouldn’t understand why you do?

Buttermilk! I absolutely love ice-cold buttermilk. My great-grandmother raised me, and we enjoyed it together. I always think of her when I drink it. I think it tastes great. Plus, the calcium and active cultures are good for my body.

What’s the main thing that you could get rid of in your life that would give you more writing time?

The Internet. But then I couldn’t promote all those books I’d be writing—it’s a no win situation.

What’s your favorite book of all time and why? What’s your favorite childhood book?

The Picture of Dorian Gray. I love Oscar Wilde’s unmatched wit and timeless storytelling. Funny, heartbreaking, terrifying—the tale has it all. And I find the story’s premise so intriguing: Lord Henry, a twinkle in his eye, corrupting an innocent young man for his own amusement. Destroying a beautiful life filled with promise—just to see if he can. The creepy portrait, riddled and oozing with Dorian’s sins—while he stays young and gorgeous—is the icing on the cake.

The Velveteen Rabbit was my favorite childhood book. My entire life, I’ve loved stories that tear your heart out. I blame my great-grandmother for that too (as well as my love for buttermilk). She used to sing me heart-wrenching songs about terrible tragedies. I’d cry and beg her to sing them again with tears still streaming down my face. I tried singing them to my own children, but they got angry when I made them cry. They hated those songs, and still haven’t forgiven me.

If you could change something about one of your books that’s already released, what would it be?

I’d have my main character wake up and discover the entire story was a dream.

Joking!

There is one typo in Another Man’s Treasure that I wish I would’ve caught. I’m not telling where it is. I want readers to make a game out of finding it.

What genre have you never written that you’d like to write?

I love classic horror, and aspire to bringing that level of dread and fear to a story. I want to write the kind of tale that makes readers glad it’s only a book—to experience the same type of relief as when they wake from a nightmare.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and you could have 3 (inanimate) objects, what would they be?

Static Guard (providing I still have clothes), my orthodontic retainers, and lip balm.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with?

Melissa McCarthy. I can go without a lot of things, but I cannot survive one day without a belly-laugh.

Your most prized material possession? Why?

The tattered stories and poems that I wrote as a child. They remind me that I was born to write. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been compelled to put words on paper. My love of writing is gift from God, to whom I am eternally grateful.

Your favorite…

Movie Gladiator, The Notebook, Titanic

Music John Mellencamp, 38 Special, Night Ranger, Tom Petty, Daryl Tonemah

Place you’ve visited Arizona—more specifically, Grand Canyon. It absolutely steals your breath.

Place you’d like to visit Hawaii. I love muddy Oklahoma lakes, but to see blue water would be very cool.

TV show from childhood Fantasy Island

TV show from adulthood Face Off, the special effects makeup competition on SyFy. I love watching people do what they do best—and these competitors are fiercely creative.

Food Chinese

Sports team huh?

Which do you prefer: Board games/card games or television? Television

I would like to thank Anna for being my guest today. I enjoyed getting to know her better. She always has interesting tidbits to share. I love her movie choices, and now I wish I’d written The Killer’s Tears, and I haven’t even read it yet, but I am going to. And, sorry about that typo in Another Man’s Treasure. My bad! 🙂

Below, you can find out more information about Anna’s books. But first, Anna has a question for you…

Do you prefer to be inside looking out, or outside looking in?

Blurb:

Deason McKindle dreams of breaking free. Free from the ex-wife whose cheating ways landed his fist in his boss’s face, free from his dead-end job as a trash collector, free from small-town Oklahoma. In two weeks, his dream of a fresh start in Montana will come true.

His dreams scatter when he saves Charis Locke from her abusive ex-husband. The gratitude in her eyes awakens a passion deep inside him. But when he later discovers the ex-husband’s corpse in a dumpster, Deason’s charged with murder. Instead of breaking free, he loses every freedom he’s ever known.

Charis thought she couldn’t love any man other than the Alzheimer’s patient she takes care of. But when Deason is arrested, she can’t let him go to prison without a fight. As fate would have it, Charis has finally fallen in love, and only the key to the killer’s identity will unlock her dreams.

Excerpt:

“Hey, I know you,” Vic garbled, his dull eyes floating over Deason’s features. “You’re Deason

McKindle. SOB that punched out your supervisor and landed yourself on the trash wagon.” He threw his head back and wheezed out a beer-steeped laugh.

Deason homed in on the oversized Adam’s apple, fighting the urge to twist the man’s collar until the stupid thing stopped bobbing.

Vic squinted at Deason, a glint in his clouded eyes. “You socked old Ricky Holland right in the mouth for messing with your old lady. Now she waits tables at Suds. Always shoving her goods in everyone’s faces.”

Hovering above Vic, Deason’s cocked fist quaked with anger, ready to drive the no good bum’s crooked nose straight through the back of his empty skull.

“He’s not worth it.”

Charis’s voice rang out stronger than Deason imagined it would, given what she’d just been through. Her words pulled him from his murderous thoughts, likely saving Vic’s life. He cut his gaze to where she stood, dusting her hands over the grass-stains on her clothes. A small, red line stamped the corner of her mouth like an exclamation point.

Vic cackled. “You ain’t gonna do squat to me, McKindle. I heard how it all went down. Sam, the big boss, made you promise to keep your nose clean, cause next time you screw up, it’ll be outta his hands.”

Deason set his jaw. “Not a problem. I know how to operate the trash compactor. By the time they find what’s left of your worthless bones, I’ll be long gone. Now close your eyes. Wouldn’t want you to get blood in them.”

Anna also has a new release, a Christian YA called Witcha’be. I love this cover!

Wednesday’s Want, Wed, Waste: Christmas Movie Roles

Hello and welcome to my version of the game, ‘F*@#’, Marry, Kill. This week we are WWW’ing the actors in Christmas movie roles.

(Please be SURE to leave your email address in the comment section in order to be eligible to win) – Winner will be drawn on Christmas Eve.

Myself and some of my friends are sharing our Want, Wed, and Waste choices from this week’s list:

Jimmy Stewart in It’s a Wonderful Life, Tim Allen in The Santa Clause, Will Ferrell in Elf

jimmys tim allen elf-will-ferrell

Click on book titles below to learn more and to be taken to a buy link

********************************************

Me (Alicia Dean). Author of Death Notice – The Northland Crime Chronicles, Book 1A killer has something to say—and he’s using her obituary column to get his point across.

WANT: Will Ferrell. I don’t necessarily find him attractive, but he makes me laugh, a lot. It might get a little annoying being married to him because of his antics, so I’ll stick with wanting him. I know many people, especially normal people, don’t care for his humor, but almost everything he says or does cracks me up. Plus, he’s a really great guy.

WED:  Jimmy Stewart. He’s so precious and vulnerable and such a great actor. It’s a Wonderful Life is a touching, feel-good movie. I think he would make a great husband (once he got past the whole wanting to off himself thing)

WASTE: Tim Allen. I’ve never seen The Santa Clause, so I can only base this on Tim Allen. I don’t hate him, but I like Will and Jimmy much better. Plus, that whole cave man grunting routine has really, really gotten old. And it wasn’t funny in the first place. Ya gotta go, Tim.

********************************************

Linda Carroll-Bradd, author of Wishes On A Star in Sweetwater Springs Christmas, a western historical anthology.

Want: In this movie, Tim Allen showed a vulnerable side and what’s not to like about a man who will do anything not to disappoint his kid.

Wed: Jimmy Stewart is the epitome of a reliable family man who may have his struggles but learns what’s important in life.

Waste: Will Ferrell’s humor is not to my taste and I barely finished watching him in Elf.

********************************************

Nancy Fraser, author of Pushing the Limits Can two high-powered attorneys learn to share the courtroom as easily as they shared the bedroom? Website: www.nancyfraser.ca

Want: Tim Allen … not so much because of any real “appeal” but … let’s face it … the man knows his way around ‘tools’ and batteries! So, if he turns out to be a dud … you can just raid his tool box for what you need to finish the job yourself.

Wed: Jimmy Stewart. Despite his short “mental” holiday in this classic movie, his character was a family man at heart. His love for his wife and daughter, and his gentle character would definitely make him a keeper. Not to mention, in real life, he was married for like forever!

Waste: Will Ferrell … I’m sorry, I don’t get this man’s appeal as a comedic actor. When I watch him, especially in something slapstick like Elf, I actually get the creeps and feel embarrassed for a grown man acting so unbelievably stupid.

********************************************

Darcy Flynn, author of Sealed With a Kiss – Can one kiss seal a young girl’s heart forever?

Wed: Jimmy Stewart is my man to Wed. His tall, lanky, adorable self is so appealing to me. He’s charming, sensitive, a faithful husband and a family man. He’s an unsung hero. I love how he fights the evil money-grabbing villain.

Waste: Will Ferrell, as cute as he is in ELF, is frankly not my type. Way too childlike in ELF and he’s just too crazy for my tastes and needs to go. So long Will.

Want: Tim Allen makes me smile and he’d be great for a fast fling. Even though he’s redeemed later in the film, I’m just not into rosy-cheeked fat men. JI would sure hate to see him die and as for marriage? No thank you! I’ll stick with my Jimmy.

********************************************

M.J. SCHILLER, author of BETWEEN ROCK AND A HARD PLACE, Even rock stars aren’t immune to murder! Website: www.mjschillerauthor.blogspot.com

Want: Gotsta be Jimmy Stewart, because he’s the only one I find remotely attractive. He’s got kind eyes, and a nice looking face, but is a little too Dad-like to really fill me with desire, if you know what I mean. Although that scene where he’s sharing the phone with Donna Reed is pretty hot…

Wed: Gotsta be Will Ferrell, because he’d keep you entertained for life. Although…he may drive you crazy, too…

Waste: I’m sorry, Tim Allen. I do like you, but I’m not fond of this movie. It’s like you were trying too hard. Thanks for letting me play, Alicia! Happy Holidays to all!

********************************************

Diane Burton, author of ONE RED SHOEWannabe writer rescues wounded spy while risking her heart.   Website:  www.dianeburton.com

Want: Tim Allen. He’s cute and from Michigan. (Love his “Pure Michigan” ads.) But he’s not exactly husband material.

Wed: Jimmy Stewart. He’s the All-American guy. Sweet, heroic, good spouse and father.

Waste: Will Farrell. He’s just plain dorky. ‘Nuff said.

********************************************

Kathy L Wheeler, author of  Lies That Bind On sale for $1.99!!! Website: http://kathylwheeler.com

Want: Tim Allen as Santa Clause is just too adorable to resist in Santa Clause. His bizarre sense of humor would entertain one for several nights, even if they are all in succession.

Wed: Who would not wed Jimmy Stewart. The man was a general for heaven’s sake. Dependable, sweet, comforting. The guy to go to in a pinch and revel in.

Waste: I can get past Will as a cheerleader! Or Ron Bergeman.
