“10 Moments that Changed My Life” by Liz Tyner – PLUS, her new release, THE NOTORIOUS COUNTESS

Please welcome my dear friend, Liz Tyner…

10 moments new_MTE1MTUwNTQ0MTg

Ten (Mostly Unplanned) Moments that changed my life:

  1. I was too young to read, but my mom asked me to tell her a story. She wrote it down and said she would keep it with the “important papers.”
  2. My husband said he wanted to go to college—which also led to moment #3.
  3. At age twenty-five, I went with someone applying for a job, showed them how I thought the application should be filled out, and ended up working there twenty years.
  4. At twenty-six, because of #3, I had to put writing non-fiction articles aside, so I began a novel, which four years and 100,000 words later was a story with a sagging middle. My energy sagged. I soon stopped writing. As in “I quit. I do not want to do this anymore.”
  5. My husband said I needed a laptop computer. I didn’t think I did.
  6. Because #2 turned out well, and I didn’t like #3 particularly, I put in a job application somewhere else and ended up with more spare time.
  7. With #5 being so handy, I wrote a 60,000 word journal about violin lessons—which was another unplanned event in my life. (Yes, you can end up in a violin class without really planning to but that’s a long story—a 60,000 word one.)
  8. It snowed. Roads were bad. I started a writing a story thanks to #5, #6, and #7. I wrote four rough drafts of short novels in approximately a year.
  9. So now I really wanted a book published. The writer’s conference site in Nashville flooded after I’d signed up, and I ended up flying to the new conference location in Florida alone, which led to me deciding later to fly to NY with friends, and then back to NY—alone—and I’d never flown until after I was forty.
  10. Someone didn’t show up for their pitch appointment after I traveled to Atlanta for a writer’s conference, and I was in the right place at the right time, and met an editor from Harlequin who agreed to look at my historical romance…

Wow, Liz. Great stuff. What a series of seeming mishaps that turned into a blessing.

Check out Liz’s book and the gorgeous cover!

“People must have something to talk about… And I do make for a good tale.”

After escaping an unhappy marriage, Lady Riverton enjoys her notoriety among the ton…even if her reputation isn’t deserved. But when she’s caught in a most compromising position with Andrew Robson, for the first time the truth is even more scandalous than the rumors!

And yet, in Andrew’s arms, Beatrice finds she’s no longer defined by her reputation and is free to be the woman she truly is. Is it time for Beatrice to trust in Andrew and end her reign of scandal once and for all?

Excerpt:

Sitting shoulder to shoulder, aware of every one of her curves, he forced himself to think of plans for Beatrice’s reintroduction into society.

She turned her face to him. From the gentle brushes of movement at his side, he knew he need move only the barest amount and she would be in his arms.

“I don’t think your sleep quite agreed with you,” she mumbled. “You look quite grim.”

He nodded, aware of her fluid movements, confined by the seat, and yet she didn’t still. Her body moved constantly, checking its boundaries.

She coughed and lost all seriousness. “Did you, um, think of me last night?”

His thoughts jumped from her body to her words. “Of course.”

Her shoulders wobbled and she managed to squeeze so close to him he braced himself not to be pushed out of the other side of the conveyance. Tickles of warmth moved from the place she touched to flood his entire body.

Wide eyes blinked at him in feigned innocence. “I do have a place in the country. Except it’s rather crowded. My mother’s there.”

“I was trying to think of ways you might impress the ton.

“I did not think of that once after you left.” She moved closer to her side of the curricle. “They cannot be impressed by me. I assure you. They’ve spent too many teatimes murmuring about what has happened in my past.”

                Andrew slowed the horse.

“Past. Present. The future. You must only think of the future now. I don’t believe anyone is really aware of the events of the night yet,” Andrew mused, “so I want us to be noted today. A pre-emptive move for when Tilly’s words are spread about.”

He ignored the skepticism on her face. “Also you might adopt a worthy cause and pour yourself into it. A cause which shows your heart. With your ability to draw attention, you’ll gather print. At first people will be unimpressed, but over time you’ll gain acceptance. People are fascinated when others change from what is expected. Think of reformed rakes. Ordinary people into war heroes. Women who sacrifice for others. Those gather a lot of discussion.”

“So you think to tame the Beast.”

“I think for you to tame her,” he said. “Things have been exaggerated in your past and now you will merely control what is noticed and embellished.”

She gave a distinctive grimace and touched the blue at her sleeve. “Not the carriage incident.”

“You must also refrain from rolling your eyes in public, I suppose. And smirking. And using scissors.”

Fabulous excerpt! Sounds like a great read. Readers, you can check it out here:

A Debut Release from Marin McGinnis: Stirring Up the Viscount

Please help me welcome Marin McGinnis and her first ever novel, a Historical Romance: Stirring Up the Viscount. What an exciting time…congratulations, Marin!

Now, let’s get to know a little bit about the author and her book: (Be sure to check out her beautiful, elegant cover)

Where did you get the idea for Stirring up the Viscount?

Viscount was inspired by a few things: Downton Abbey, a BBC series called The Victorian Kitchen, and from somewhere in the dark recesses of my brain, the Julia Roberts movie Sleeping With the Enemy.

Was there anything unusual, any anecdote about this book, the characters, title, process, etc, you’d like to share?

Theodora’s name comes from an old (1936) movie I loved, called Theodora Goes Wild, with Irene Dunne. The two Theodoras are nothing alike, but somehow it fit.

What is the most difficult thing about writing a book?

Butt in chair.  Seriously, the hardest part of writing a book is getting the butt in my chair and writing every day.

What was the most difficult thing about this one in particular?

I wrote this book very fast, in about 3 months, but I spent another 22 months editing it and adding scenes that I had glossed over when I wrote the first draft. I also spent a lot of time staring at the screen and writing nothing. The most difficult thing about it, for me, was in going back and fixing those early scenes. I learned, though, that the fast draft is not my style—I really need to write chronologically, from start to finish, with nothing major left out.

Do you have another occupation, other than writer? If so, what is it and how do you like it?

In my non-writing life I’m a lawyer. I’ve been doing it for almost twenty years so there are things I like and things I don’t like, but other than writing it’s all I know how to do. Looking forward to retirement when I can write full time!

What do you love that most people don’t like and wouldn’t understand why you do?

Peanut butter and bacon sandwiches. Don’t judge!

What do you dislike that most people wouldn’t understand?

There are a couple of movies, and one book, that are beloved by people all over the world that I just cannot stand.

What’s the main thing that you could get rid of in your life that would give you more writing time?

Other than my day job? 🙂 My habit of procrastination. And Netflix. But I’m never giving up Netflix!

Would you rather have a bad review or no review?

Honestly, since this is my first book I’ll be ecstatic if anyone reads it at all. 🙂

What genre have you never written that you’d like to write?

I’ve never written paranormal, but I think I’d like to one day. I’m not sure I’m creative enough, though!

What is your favorite…

Place you’ve visited – England

Place you’d like to visit – Ireland

Food – Lay’s Lightly Salted potato chips. Seriously addicted.

Which do you prefer: Board games/card games or television?

I was never much for TV, but now that I can watch it on my iPad I binge watch like crazy.

Blurb:

Seeking to escape an abusive husband, Theodora Ravensdale answers an ad in The Times for a job as cook in a country home. A fortuitous house fire enables her to fake her own death and flee to northern England and live under an assumed name. But Theodora’s refuge is not all she would wish, when she stirs emotions in the heir to the estate, Jonathan Tenwick, and in herself.

Meanwhile, as the connection between Theodora and Jonathan grows, her husband learns she did not perish in the fire, and searches for her. Fearing he is close to finding her, Theodora must flee again to protect the family and the viscount for whom she cares deeply. In the final confrontation with her husband, Theodora learns she is stronger than she ever knew, and love is worth fighting for.

Excerpt:

“Did you love him very much?” he asked quietly, afraid to know the answer.

Her voice almost a groan, she whispered, “Please, Jonathan. Enough.”

It was the “Enough” that was his undoing. In that single word, he heard years of torment, from a woman who clearly had not loved her husband, at least not for some time. Whoever or whatever he had been, Jonathan was certain he was the source of her fear.

But if he were truly dead, why did she still fear him?

About Marin:

Clevelanders are tough, a bit cynical, and just a little crazy, and Marin McGinnis is no exception. She writes smart and sexy tales of Victorian-era romance.

Happy Robbie Burns Day! – An Interview and New Wild Rose Press Release from Gail MacMillan

Please welcome my guest, Gail McMillan…

Image

January 25, Robbie Burns Day!  I was thrilled when Alicia invited me to answer interview questions about my latest book “Highland Harry” on that day.  This Scottish-Canadian historical romance fits in well with the celebrations of Scotland’s arguably most beloved poet.

What perfect timing! I had never heard of Robbie Burns, but I’m so happy to share his special day with you. 🙂

Tell us about Highland Harry, where did you get the idea?

The idea for a book was inspired by tales of my grandfather, several times removed, George Fowlie, who immigrated to Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada in the late 1700’s. Although I’ve never been able to determine that he was, I assumed, for the sake of the book, that he’d been driven out of Scotland by the infamous Highland Clearances. In the backwoods George and his wife Jane established a farm and two mills, one grist, the other lumber.   George died at age fifty, leaving Jane with all this to manage as well to raise nine children, the oldest fourteen, the youngest a mere two months old.

His wife proved a remarkable woman.  She never remarried.  She raised the children and managed the family interests on her own until she passed in her late 80’s. The Fowlie mills flourished until after World War II, a lasting tribute to this remarkable woman.  Her eldest son, James, became a clergyman and, later, the first Professor of Natural History at prestigious Queen’s University.

“Highland Harry” is what I call a “what if” book.  I wondered what would have happened if both George and Jane had died, if the care of their children had been left to a pair of unusual step parents, one a former Highland highwayman fleeing the noose, the other a tavern girl. Throw in a vicious enemy out to gain control of their prosperous holdings, and the plot was set to boil.  Could these unusual and unexpected parents fight off all challenges and forge an enduring family, even a dynasty, out of all this adversity?   You’ll have to read “Highland Harry” to find out.

Are there any tricks or habits you use when creating a story?

Not very original but I always try to walk in my characters’ shoes (boots, barefeet).  I try to see the world as they would see and experience it.  Sadly, sometimes I’ve inhabited their bodies too long and my real-life supper has burned to a black sludge.

What is one word you would use to describe yourself? What is one word you think others might use to describe you?

Shy.  Others probably see me as distant or reserved.

What do you want readers to come away with after they read Highland Harry?

I would like readers to come away with a sense of the power and strength to be found in loving, caring family relationships, that by uniting for the common good, a family can conquer or, at the very least, manage any adversity.

If you could change something about one of your books that’s already released, what would it be?

I can’t single out one particular book.  What I’d most like to do is expand on some scenes, give the characters more of a chance to reveal themselves and, in some cases, to draw a more detailed account of setting.

What is your favorite quote?

“God forgive me if I whine, I have two feet, The world is mine.”  My father’s to me when I expressed discontentment.

What is your most prized material possession and why?

My mother’s copy of L. M. Mongomery’s  “The Blue Castle.”  She passed when I was sixteen.  She left this book to me, a favorite of both of us.  To me, it symbolizes our shared love of the printed word and keeps her memory always close to me.

Thank you for being with me today, Gail. I love that quote from your father. Very touching about “The Blue Castle,” I’m sure that is a prized possession.

Now, for Gail’s latest release…

Cover Highland Harry

Blurb:

After losing his family in the Scottish Clearances, Harry Wallace becomes infamous for his clever revenge on the ruling English upper class, but his success can last only so long. With the shadow of a noose hanging over him, he barely escapes with his life and sails for British North America and a town he’s heard of but never seen.

In New Brunswick, Maggie Fowler needs a champion, someone willing to fight for the home and holdings she and her seven stepchildren are trying to defend against a murderous, power-hungry enemy who has already killed the children’s father. Will footloose, devil-may-care Highland Harry meet her needs?

Excerpt:

He sat savoring another wee dram. God knew he needed it. He’d just been proposed to by the stepmother of seven children with mills, a farm, and an apparently dangerous enemy threatening her and her family. The widow of a fellow Highlander, a woman—together with her children—he was duty bound to help and protect.

In the flickering firelight he walked to the door of her bedroom and peered in through the space she’d left open to allow heat from the hearth to enter. In the wide bed, her shining chestnut hair adorning the pillow, Maggie slept, long eyelashes spread out over creamy cheeks. In her arms she cradled the golden-haired cherub named Eppie. On a rug on the floor beside them, Pig woke, looked up at him with strangely knowing eyes, grunted, then lowered her head and went back to sleep. What was a man to do with such a rare and unexpected family?

He wandered back to the hearth, put a hand on the shelf above it, and stood staring down into the flames. Wind shrieked around the corners and snow buffeted the windows, but inside the log house, protected from the storm, he let a warm, secure feeling settle over him, a warm and secure feeling he hadn’t experienced at night since he’d been a lad in his father’s croft cottage during a blizzard much like this one. The ambience was seductive but perhaps false. After all, the family had a dangerous enemy.

He banked the fire for the night, then glanced back toward the bedroom where Maggie slept. Beautiful, unassuming Maggie. What would the future hold for her and the children if he decided not to stay?

Author Fun Facts: Elvis, Hauntings, Gingerbread, Surrogate Babies, Hawaii

Sharing some fun facts about myself and a few author friends. And, we all have questions for readers…

End of Lonely Street – A Vintage Romance Short Story from The Wild Rose Press – $1.99

Alicia Dean Fun Fact:

I wrote my first romance at eleven years old. My hero’s name was Lonnie Beal (after Elvis Presley’s character in the movie, Tickle Me) and I describe him in the story as looking just like Elvis. 🙂 I still have my pencil-written copy of the story, although it’s faded and difficult to read. When I began publishing, I continued the tradition of mentioning Elvis in most of my stories, although I learned to be a little more subtle. 🙂

EndofLonelyStreet_w9180_FINAL

Blurb:

All Toby Lawson wants is to go to college to become a teacher and to be free of her alcoholic mother and some painful memories. But when her mother nearly burns the house down, Toby must put her dreams on hold and return home to care for her. The only time she isn’t lonely and miserable is when she’s listening to her heartthrob, Elvis Presley. His music takes her away and helps her escape from everything wrong in her life.

Noah Rivers has always loved Toby, but no matter what he says, she can‘t get past the fact that her drunken mother once kissed him. He soon realizes the true problem lies in Toby’s belief she’s not good enough for him and in her fear she will be just like her mother.

What will it take to prove to her that she deserves to be happy, and that he would give anything to be the man to make her dreams come true?

A Red, Red Rose Cozy Mystery, Southern Gothic, The Wild Rose Press

Susan Coryell Fun Fact

I got the inspiration for a Red, Red Rose when I explored an actual Colonial estate that was rumored to be haunted. Though I never experienced anything unusual there, every family with children that toured the place reported that the kids felt “something weird.” One asked, “Did someone die in here?” Another said, “Oh no! I see a man in the fireplace!” My writer’s antennae went up and I started writing my cozy mystery/Southern Gothic on the spot.

Coming Spring of 2015 Beneath the Stones – The Wild Rose Press – sequel to A Red, Red Rose, 5 years later.

Blurb:

When twenty-year-old Ashby Overton travels to Overhome Estate for the summer, she hopes to unearth her ancestral roots and the cause of a mysterious family rift surrounding the horseback riding death of her Grandmother Lenore many years ago.

From the moment she enters her room in the oldest wing, Ashby feels an invisible, enfolding presence.  She learns the room belonged to a woman named Rosabelle, but no one is willing to talk about Rosabelle—no one except Luke, the stable boy who captures her heart. As Ashby and Luke become closer, she realizes he can be the confidant she needs to share the terrifying, unfolding secrets.

Ever present is a force Ashby never sees, only feels.  Candles light themselves, notes from an old lullaby fall from the ceiling, the radio tunes itself each day.  And roses, always meant for Ashby, appear in the unlikeliest places.  Are the roses a symbol of love, or do they represent something dark, something deep and evil?

Now available for $.99— Gingerbread Wishes – Book 1, Sugar & Spice Bakery series. Holiday, Indie release

Linda Carroll-Bradd Fun Fact:

This story has made a progression from a holiday story aimed for a confession magazine to a short story included in a holiday anthology (but the company went out of business) to an indie release. Each time, I made changes (from first person to third, added the hero’s POV, lengthened the word count). But the essence of the story has remained the same and I’ve loved it in all its versions.

Nobody’s Baby, Contemporary romance, holiday ending, Indie release for only $3.99

Carol Burnside Fun Fact:

NOBODY’S BABY came about during a brainstorming session as I attempted to put a twist on a secret baby trope or plot. Well, the baby was a surprise to Rio but not in any way I’d ever read in a book. Authors are supposed to torment their characters and and—whoo-ee—do Kate and Rio have a lot to deal with in this heartwarming story with a Christmas ending! I hope my readers enjoy my twisted take on an inherited baby/secret baby plot.

About Carol: Award winning author of “Sizzling romance with heart and humor.” A native Texan, Carol is a southern gal through and through, a gardener, amateur chef, avid reader, dog and cat lover, crochet enthusiast, seamstress, and creative diva who dreams up ways to torment her characters from an imagination fueled by too much sweet tea. Also a traveler and at one time a nomad, Carol loves to draw upon her memories for story settings, whether close to home or far-flung.

The Marriage Trap – Hawaii, Sexy romance, The Wild Rose Press

Marissa Garner Fun Fact:

I set THE MARRIAGE TRAP in Hawaii because every time I’ve visited the islands, it’s been a romantic adventure. The book draws on some of my experiences. I’ve actually stayed in the Volcano House overlooking the Kilauea Caldera, which is where my hero and heroine plan a getaway. I’ve hiked on Maui’s dormant volcano, Haleakala, which my characters also visit. I’ve snorkeled in the coral reefs and bodysurfed on the crashing waves. But I let Drew and Ginny do something that I never had the pleasure of experiencing. You’ll have to read the book to learn what they got to do that I didn’t.

THE MARRIAGE TRAP (First in the Hawaiian Heat series) is available now and only $4.61 from Amazon.

Buffalo Bill, Calamity Jane, and a Historical Romance from Velda Brotherton

I’m happy to introduce Velda Brotherton’s latest release from The Wild Rose Press and the fascinating facts she uncovered in her research…

Researching for this book, the second in The Victorian series, has been fun and somewhat surprising. I learned that a small sleepy town in Kansas was once the home of a large group of English/Scottish settlers who refused to embrace the western life, but rather brought their English life with them. From farm animals to lace for the tables, these people were determined not to leave their heritage behind.

I was raised in Kansas, but never knew the history of Victoria, Kansas until I visited my brother one summer. It so intrigued me that I knew I had to write not one, but three novels set there.

October, 1872 George Grant traveled by the Kansas Pacific railroad to Hays City. He was 50, with a vigorous six-foot frame, and carried himself with the grace and dignity of a king. He came to buy a large tract of land and form a colony of Englishmen. England was overcrowded. Worthy men could not make a living and young men had little future. He would name the colony for the queen, the Victoria Colony.

Wild Bill Hickok was marshal of nearby Hays City and enforced the Colt law. He shot up a bunch of soldiers from the Seventh Cavalry and was run out of town. Buffalo Bill Cody killed buffalo and peddled the meat from door to door in Hays City. Calamity Jane came from the east and could swear, shoot and hold her liquor with the best of them. She was genial and immoral and well liked, starting trouble wherever she went. Shootings were so regular it was like one long fourth of July. Hays City was one wild place.

Trains ran irregularly and rarely at night for fear of Indian Attack. Beyond Hays City the prairies stretched smoothly as far as they could see. In the far distance the blue sky kissed their purple edges. Antelope and buffalo grazed on the short green grass. Tall crimson grasses waved along the creek banks and sunflowers grew along the RR tracks. .

Permanent residences in the new settlement were all to be of stone, the frame buildings being turned over to the hired help. There would be free schools, a church, a library and special train rates. He would keep a herd of high-blooded stock, cattle, horses and sheep, a supply of pure seeds, steam cultivators such as were in use in England. None of these things were available to homesteaders.

On April Fool’s day 30 English and Scottish began their journey to America and the prairies of Kansas aboard a steamship leaving Scotland to begin a trip that would take a year by ship, rail, boat, and often horse-drawn stages. Many came with the assurance that allowances varying from 50 to 200 dollars a month would be sent to them regularly. They were called remittance men and were, for the most part, unmarried and in their early twenties.

On May 17, 1873 Mr. Grant and his first colony arrived at Victoria. In the group were 38 men, women and children and several head of Black and Red Aberdeen Angus Bulls, some sheep, and supplies needed upon their arrival. The Bulls were later placed on his own ranch and used to cross breed the long horn cattle from the area. Victoria became the birth place of Aberdeen Breed in America. The settlement grew and flourished for ten years. A nearby German settlement finally took over as the English moved out. No stone castle remain. Today the site is the home of St. Fidelis Church.

Velda Brotherton writes of romance in the old west with an authenticity that makes her many historical characters ring true. A knowledge of the rich history of our country comes through in both her fiction and nonfiction books, as well as in her writing workshops and speaking engagements.  She just as easily steps out of the past into contemporary settings to create novels about women with the ability to conquer life’s difficult challenges. Tough heroines, strong and gentle heroes, villains to die for, all live in the pages of her novels and books. Her writing lives up to her brand: Sexy, Dark, and Gritty.

Linda Andrews – Unmask My Heart

Linda Andrews is my guest today, and she’s unmasking a Halloween story…let’s get to know a little more about her and her latest release, Unmask My Heart.

Are there any tricks or habits you use when creating a story?

I have a playlist for every story I write. The current book I’m finishing up is a Christmas Story. You’d think I would be listening to Christmas music, but I’m not. It has Shake it Off by Taylor Swift, Grenade by Bruno Mars, Meanwhile back at Mama’s by Tim McGraw, Chicken Fried by ZBB, I’m not the only One by Sam Smith, Roller Coaster and Drink a Beer by Luke Bryan, and Centuries by Fall Out Boy, plus the 4 song album by Meghan Trainor. It’s just something about the lyrics and the beat of the music that puts me right in the mood.

Do you have another occupation, other than writer? If so, what is it and how do you like it?

By day I don my lab coat and goggles and act like an organic chemist. Okay, I actually perform extractions followed by analysis on a very expensive GC. I love bench work and my job, most of the time. But there are days when I think it would be nice to just be able to write all the time without cramming it into my off hours.

What do you dislike that most people wouldn’t understand?

I dislike reality TV shows that views have to vote for or against people and feature really folks being nasty to each other. That said, I do love forensic shows and history documentaries. My daughter points out these are reality shows. And I often counter that these things end well, the criminal is caught and the rest of us rose above the baddies in history. I don’t believe in being mean for entertainment purposes; there are enough jerk faces in the world that we shouldn’t encourage everyone else to believe this is how a society should function.

What genre have you never written that you’d like to write?

I’ve never written a mystery series and would love to write one eventually, but I think there’ll be ghosts in it and it’ll be a romance, so um, not really a mystery. I love mysteries and perhaps, there are just some genres we as writers should always enjoy but never ruin our love of them by writing them. 🙂

What is your favorite quote?

“Imagination is more important than knowledge.” by Albert Einstein

If you were stranded on a deserted island and you could have 3 (inanimate) objects, what would they be?

An iPad with keyboard and unlimited power (solar of course), an axe, and a knife. Yeah, I’m that practical. 🙂

Your favorite…

Favorite Halloween Costume  Some epic gold grillz

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Below is a scene from my Halloween novella. My heroine wanted to look her best when she reunited with her first love. Fate had other plans. 🙂

UnmaskMyHeart

Her heart faltered and stumbled to find its usual rhythm. The list of supplies slipped from her numb fingers. The neat rows of printing winked at her as the scrap of paper drifted to the ground.

Gabriel Stephens was back.

No one had warned her. No one. On her milk and egg delivery route this morning, she had seen six people and talked to each of them. Yet they had said nothing. It was a small island! The butcher, the baker, and the blacksmith all lived within a stone’s throw of the pier. They had to have known.

“I apologize for my appearance.” Gabe tucked his arms through the sleeves of his woolen jacket. A fancy white label flashed along the sleek lining before he slipped it over his broad chest.

No homemade clothing for him. Phoebe’s mouth opened and closed. Her knees trembled. She was no longer a child. She no longer had a crush on him. Her heart didn’t seem to be listening.

“Now, what can I do—” Adjusting the lapels of his suit, Gabe looked up. He blinked once. “Phoebe?”

Her reply stuck in her dry throat so she nodded.

A dimple winked in his left cheek. The one he always said came out to play just for her. His gray-blue eyes shifted into sapphire as his gaze traveled from her black hair to her muddy boots. “You are looking more beautiful than I remember.”

Blurb:

Her heart can’t give him up. Her head can’t trust him.

Everyone Phoebe Monpetit has ever loved eventually abandoned her. Even Gabriel Stephens, the man she thought she’d marry. For the last twelve years, she’s muddled through alone, cobbling a life together.

Gabriel took the first opportunity to escape his family’s constant fighting and rarely looked back. When war explodes across Europe, he learns what his cowardice has really cost him.

This Halloween, he’ll use every trick he can to win back Phoebe’s heart.

Will she keep her true feelings covered, or will she let Gabe unmask her heart?

About Linda:

Linda Andrews lives with her husband and three children in Phoenix, Arizona. When she announced to her family that her paranormal romance was to be published, her sister pronounce: “What else would she write? She’s never been normal.”

All kidding aside, writing has become a surprising passion. So just how did a scientist start to write paranormal romances? What other option is there when you’re married to romantic man and live in a haunted house?

If you’ve enjoyed her stories or want to share your own paranormal experience feel free to email the author at lindaandrews at lindaandrews dot net She’d love to hear from you.

Five Authors from Oklahoma – Five Stories in One Boxed Set About a Cursed Doll and True Love

A while back, a group of Oklahoma authors came together to write a series of short stories with the recurring theme of a cursed Scrimshaw doll. The curse began in the late seventeenth century when a father feared his daughter’s betrothed would betray her. A gypsy attempted to hex the girl with this spell: All those who betray you will suffer. Only true love can break the curse. As luck (or bad luck) would have it, the girl was holding a Scrimshaw Doll her father had made for her, and the curse went into the doll instead, and therefore, it carried on for centuries. Our first installment picks up with the young woman’s daughter, who has inherited the doll.

These stories, in various genres, all stand alones, were published with The Wild Rose Press as individual releases, but have now been released in two boxed sets, each containing five stories. The first set released today, and the second set, Betrayed, will release next Thursday, August 14th. Volume 2 contains stories from myself, Callie Hutton, Kathy L Wheeler, Tamrie Foxtail, and Anna Kittrell.

Kae Elle Wheeler / The English Lily / Historical Novella

A runaway heiress protecting her secrets is no match for a destitute viscount resolved to his fate—whatever the cost

Interesting Fact:

The English Lily was inspired from book iii of my Cinderella Series – The Surprising Enchantress, where Lady Esmeralda, Cinderella’s batty-eyed sister is jealous of the prim, very feminine, and definitely normal-fluttering-eyed miss. But Lady Kendra had her own secret, leading to her own story to tell.

 A favorite line:

She was happy to be his guinea pig, so to speak, although referring to herself as a pig of any sort seemed a bit extreme.

Heidi Vanlandingham, Trail of Hope, Historical Novella

Can love and hope prevail on a deadly journey?

Interesting Fact:

I love genealogy and have always wanted to know where my ancestors came from, how they lived, and what they believed. What decisions they made that trickled down through time and created who I am today. I’m actually descended from one of Pocahontas’s sisters and my several greats cousin was Nathaniel Pryor who founded Pryor, Oklahoma. His fantastic story inspired my ideas behind Trail of Hope.

Interesting Fact:

A few years ago my husband was given a year to live unless he received a new kidney. We were seven months into that year when he received the kidney. Also, the parrot is modeled after a friend’s parrot.

A Favorite Line:

Jessica Ferguson, The Last Daughter, Romantic Suspense Novella

A past more terrifying than she dares to imagine

Fun Fact:

I was living in Oklahoma when I learned that the Scrimshaw Doll series was being planned. When I sat down to pull together a proposal for submission, my characters and the house called Wounded Heart, appeared so incredibly real to me, it was as though they were alive and waiting for me to come into their lives to tell their story. Newspapers across the state were filled with stories of abuse so while my tale is dark, and has to do with that very unromantic subject, the theme is forgiveness. Hero Trent Jones and I learned a lot from our heroine, Rayna Guildbeau, and we’re amazed at her capacity to love and forgive.

A favorite line:

“I know when I start finding clues, or relatives, there’ll be no turning back. My life will be different—for good or for bad.”

New Releases from The Wild Rose Press plus Fun Facts & Fave Lines

I am proud to share some of the latest releases from The Wild Rose Press… Please check out the books and follow these authors on Twitter and Facebook, etc.

Enjoy the wonderful stories, fave lines, AND the fun fact tidbits…

Frances Evesham with An Independent Woman, Historical (Victorian) mystery romance Novel

Northanger Abbey meets Downton in Victorian England

Fun Fact: One day, my mother took me to the old Post Office in a tiny English Cotswold village where she grew up. There, I met Great Aunt Annie, a maiden Victorian lady, almost a hundred years old. Tiny and neat, with cotton-wool hair styled in a careful bun at the back of her neck, Aunt Annie bustled about, making cups of tea and cutting slices of fruitcake.

Aunt Annie lived quite alone, content, full of lively interest in the world and its news. She would have adored the internet.

Philomena, the Independent Woman of my novel, is, like Aunt Annie, a Victorian woman: self-sufficient, spirited and capable. The Victorians invented and built things. They engineered steam trains, bridges and factory machinery. Their photographs suggest they were solemn and unsmiling, but that was because they had to keep still for 30 seconds for every shot.

I believe the Victorians were like us inside, nursing their own hopes and dreams of adventure, love and happiness. I’m having fun writing their stories.

A few lines from the story:

Philomena leaped in the air and turned, terrified.

Lord Thatcham, tall and menacing, glowered at her from the doorway, his eyes ablaze with fury.

Marilyn Baron with Homecoming Homicides A Psychic Crystal Mystery Book Two, Mystery and Suspense Novel, Dark romantic suspense with a humorous twist

Psycho Meets Miss Congeniality

Fun Fact: When my daughter was a homecoming contestant at her university in a small North Florida town, I attended the pageant and noticed a man approach each contestant for her autograph on his pageant booklet. That sparked my imagination and was the inspiration for this story. I wondered what would happen if that man was a serial killer. The fictional college town, Graysville, was patterned after the town where I went to college, Gainesville, Florida.

A few lines from the story:

“All right, you immature rat bastard, listen up. I am going to pick up the phone and have you reassigned. It’s obvious we can’t work together if you can’t get over yourself. Okay, we had sex. Let’s just get that out on the table.”

Diana Rubino with A BLOODY GOOD CRUISE, paranormal novel

“How would a ship swarming with vampires liven things up?”

Fun Fact: My husband and I are hooked on cruising, and my very first cruise was on the Eastern Mediterranean, beginning in Rome and ending in Istanbul. The ports of call included Rhodes, Cyprus, Santorini, and Egypt. Because I love Italy and cruising, I wanted to combine those passions with a humorous story about vampires and how they face prejudice in the human world. I met an Italian woman named Fausta in the mid-80s and always loved that name–I always planned to use that name in one of my books someday. I finally got the chance with Fausto, close enough!

A line from the story:

“All the blood has drained from your face, and not in a good way.”

Heidi Wessman Kneale with AS GOOD AS GOLD, paranormal historical novella,

What would you pay for the chance at love?

Fun Fact: In the Seventeenth Century, gold and silver were the standard coinage throughout Europe. However, each country minted their own coins. Even these changed from time to time, often depending on the whimsy of whoever was king at the moment. Our Heroine Daywen Athalia, had she been wealthy enough (she isn’t) to deal with gold coins, she would most likely have been familiar with British Guineas.

Our Hero Bel MacEuros is fond of stealing foreign gold. Here, he has stolen some Bavarian Guilders. It was entirely possible he could have also stolen some Florins, depending on where he was thieving in the German States.

The Gypsy woman Alishandra doesn’t care if her gold is Guineas or Guilders. For her, gold is gold and rather fungible–she’ll take it in any form, unless it’s cursed. Like this gold was.

A few lines from the story:

“Lachlan,” she said, her voice quivering ever so slightly. “Would you marry me?”

He studied her for a moment, then sucked his teeth. “I’d hate tae break your heart. I dinnae want tae marry ya.”

Lynn Shurr with A Wild Red Rose, Contemporary Western Novel

As a rodeo bullfighter, Clint Beck is unafraid of wild things, but can he tame a beautiful gold-digger and win her heart?

Fun Fact: When I began to do research on bull riders for The Convent Rose which preceded A Wild Red Rose, I often watched the Professional Bull Riders on TV and attended rodeos. While I admired the courage of the bull riders, I was even more taken with the bullfighters who put their lives on the line to save a downed rider. They are heroes, too. Those who read the first book know Renee will not be easily tamed. I thought a rodeo bullfighter just might be up to the task.

Fun Fact: My family and I took a trip to California a few years ago. When I started writing the story, the sunny setting came forth as a perfect location for the characters to move forward with their relationship. Santa Monica beach is beautiful.

Anna Small with How To Marry A Rogue, Historical romance novel

Jack promises to protect his best friend’s little sister on her trip abroad. But is he the biggest threat of them all?

Fun Fact: Part of the story is set in Bordeaux, at the hero’s family winery, so I happily did some research at a local Florida winery. All that tasting and drinking really helped inspire me! The rest of the book is set in England, where I grew up in the beautiful countryside and went to school outside of London. I hope this experience gives my historical romances a flavor of their own.

Judy Ann Davis with UNDER STARRY SKIES, Western Historical Mystery Romance Novel

Romance happens under Colorado’s starry skies.

Fun Fact: The story of school teacher Maria O’Donnell teaching Indian Two Bears to read and write in 1875 evolved in “Under Starry Skies” since I had worked in adult education and understood the value of reading and writing for all adults. Two Bears was a minor, but favorite character in my first book, “Red Fox Woman.” I had to bring him back in the sequel since my readers fell in love with him. They also fell in love with the youngest Ashmore brother, Tydall, who’s my story’s hero.

Mickey J. Corrigan with Whiskey Sour Noir, Book #1 in The Hard Stuff series; a noir novella, dark romance.

Love is like a whiskey sour: you’ve got to watch out or it sneaks up on you. And it can be so bittersweet.

Fun Fact: One day the phrase “whiskey sour noir” just popped into my head. I loved it and wanted to create a story to go with it. A friend had told me about a close relative who had been labelled a sex offender, and how that had totally ruined the man’s life. So I used that concept as my theme.

When my editor at the Wild Rose Press called the novella “book #1,” a series was born. Each story takes place in the imaginary Dusky Beach, a seedy little Florida beach town where the women seem to drink too hard and fall too hard for the wrong kind of men.

After my editor Diana Carlile created the superb cover for Whiskey Sour Noir, she came up with the next title, Vodka Warrior. And another amazing cover. She is so awesome!

The next book in the series, Mai Tai Guy, will be a quickie and a free read. Book #3 is in line for editing. I’m not going to tell you which kind of liquor is up next in Dusky Beach. But I bet you can guess!

AND…

Mickey J. Corrigan Vodka Warrior: Book # 2 in The Hard Stuff series, a gritty romantic comedy novella.

Theresa Tierney is over the hill and drinking enough to roll straight down that slippery slope—and she blames it all on the body god next door.

Fun Fact: Vodka Warriors is the second book in The Hard Stuff series about tough women who fall in love with the wrong kind of man. The inspiration for this story came from my dental hygienist. She entertained me while cleaning my teeth, recounting the antics of a hard drinking woman at war with her neighbor, a younger man who partied daily with strippers.

The typical crazy South Florida tale became enlarged in my mind as I wrote about Theresa Tierney, the body god next door, and the other kooky characters in Vodka Warrior. Like Whiskey Sour Noir, Book #1 in The Hard Stuff series, the story takes place in the seedy town of Dusky Beach. This is where all the Hard Stuff women live—and love.
