Jade’s voice wrapped around Luke in the semi darkness, sending a shiver up his spine. He didn’t recall that husky quality when he’d heard her speak before and wondered if it was due to her injury.

Her hair in the dim light of the kitchen reminded him of warm honey. Hazel in the light, her eyes now took on a deep green tint, like a jungle cat…a beautiful cat, trapped and forced into captivity.

He looked at her hands wrapped around the coffee cup and thought about how soft and fragile they’d felt when he’d held them in the hospital. He had an absurd urge to touch them once again, to slide his arms around her and hold her body against his.

Damn, where had that come from? He couldn’t afford to think about this woman like that. Couldn’t afford the luxury of desiring her, of wondering what her skin would taste like, what it would feel like to kiss her.

Her voice startled him out of his treacherous reverie. “I still don’t understand why he saved my life.”

He cringed inwardly, knowing she was talking about Smith, about him. “Could be several reasons. Maybe he wanted to keep you alive. Use you for leverage in case they got in a tight spot.”

She leaned her elbows on the table and pillowed her head in her hands. “God, it’s all so crazy. So confusing.”

He didn’t like her asking questions about El Lobo. It was important he not expose his undercover role. He might have to use it again one day. It could also possibly jeopardize the undercover agents still out in the field.

He should have known she would ask. He had hoped that the trauma of her injury would keep her from remembering but obviously, that hadn’t happened.

Jade rose from the table and moved to the window. She sipped her tea and peered outside. “It’s so quiet out here. And so dark.” She turned back to him. “How many agents did you say would be here at all times?”

“No less than four.”

“Will you be one of them?”

“Most of the time.”

Moving back to the table she sat down, a haunted look in her eyes. “How am I going to live with all this guilt?”

“What do you feel guilty about?”

“Allowing Bryce to do what he did. To hurt those poor girls.”

“It’s not your fault. My partner, Delia, helped the girls escape. I don’t think any of them were actually hurt.”

“What about the other times? I’m sure he’s done this before. How many other girls were there? Do you have any idea?”

Luke took his time replying, then reluctantly admitted, “I’m afraid we don’t. But, our government has contacted the Mexican government and they’re being very cooperative. They’ve agreed to let us send agents over there to investigate and have offered assistance in helping to locate any girls that may have been victims in the past. Or as many of them as possible.”

“Good,” Jade said quietly. Then she gave him a look of sympathy. “Delia? She was the woman Bryce murdered? She was your partner?”

Grief weighted his chest like a block of cement, but he kept his voice even. “Yes. We’re fairly certain your husband is responsible for her death.”

“You must hate me.” Her eyes shimmered with tears and self-loathing.

“You had nothing to do with it.”

“I should’ve stopped him.”

An image of DiMarco holding the blade to Jade’s neck flashed in his mind. He recalled the helplessness and the rage he’d felt as she slid to the floor, blood pouring from the wound. He gave himself a mental shake, wondering why the sight of her near death had affected him so profoundly when he’d seen more than his share of murder victims. Dragging in a breath, he said, “You did try and you almost died. Everyone did the best they could.” He didn’t acknowledge his role in Delia’s death. The fact that she wouldn’t have been out there, chasing the lead, if it hadn’t been for him.

She gave a brief nod, but her eyes were still haunted. “I’m just sorry it wasn’t enough for your partner.”

She braced her hands on the door, intending to step back. Before she could, Eli lifted his head and whipped it toward her. He couldn’t have heard her, could he? She’d barely made a sound. Maybe he just sensed—

Her thoughts ceased when she took a closer look at Eli’s face. He stood in place, breathing heavily. She narrowed her eyes. God. No.

His features were somehow distorted, his skin had a gray cast and looked… crumpled. His eyes glowed red. Something dark and liquid—blood?—was smeared around his mouth, dripped off his… fangs?

“No!” She let out the cry before she could stop herself, then clamped a hand over her mouth.

Backing from the door, she shook her head violently from side to side. It couldn’t be. No way. She had to have imagined it.

A sound at the door told her Eli was coming out. She turned and fled. Her tennis shoes slapped the ground, the noise reverberating in her ears along with the word—vampire… vampire… vampire. Oh my God. Vampire… Bats… Drained

A hand landed on her arm. She screamed and stumbled, nearly falling to the ground. Eli pulled her up and whirled her around to face him.

“Let me go!” Terror strangled her vocal cords. She jerked at his hold, but couldn’t budge him. His face was back to normal except for the red eyes. Trembles shook her body.

“Calm down,” he said, so softly she almost didn’t hear him.

He wiped blood from his mouth. Blood. Oh God.

Nausea surfaced in her throat. She clutched her stomach, afraid she was going to throw up.

“Don’t touch me.” Her voice came out hoarse from her raw throat. She jerked her arm again, and this time he released her.

He held his hands out. “Liberty. Let me explain—”

“Explain what? That you’re a—a vampire?” She wrapped her arms around her body and backed away. “How is that even possible?”

Eli squeezed his eyes shut. When he opened them, the red was gone, and they glinted their usual silvery blue. The moonlight reflecting in them made them look like Christmas tinsel.

“It is what it is, sweetheart.” A muscle ticked in his clenched jaw. “I’m a vampire.”

He took a step toward her, and she took a step back. “Stay away from me.”

He shrugged. “You’re the one who came to my house in the middle of the night.” He was still moving slowly toward her. His eyes roamed over her body. “I can only guess why. ” His voice was low, hypnotic. He jerked his head toward his house. “I can send her packing if you’d like.”

“She—she’s not dead?”

His mouth curved in a slow smile. “Did she look dead? I assure you, a killing was not what you interrupted.”

The jack-o-lanterns that I had un-artistically drawn faces on and placed on my porch had been smashed all over my front walk. The slime was now oozing between my toes. I looked up in time to see two young boys, one wearing a yellow raincoat, hightail it down the street. I followed and saw them disappear into a house at the end of the block. Mitch Blakely’s house.

I banged on his door, more loudly than he had on mine.

“Priscilla?” His eyes were wide as he opened the door. His gaze raked my body and I realized what I must look like–hair half wild, robe thrown over still-damp flesh, my feet orange with pumpkin guts. “Good God, what happened?”

“Your son,” I screeched. “Your son is what happened!”

“My son? What did he do?”

“What the hell’s going on?” A voice behind me spoke. I turned to find Tim and Sadie Coen. They had a son about the same age as Mitch’s…pre-teen or barely teen, I wasn’t sure which. “We saw the boys run into the house like the hounds of hell were after them.”

“Your sons were spying on me.” My look encompassed all three of the inept parents. “I caught them in the tree outside my bedroom window. And I believe they smashed pumpkins all over my sidewalk.”

Mitch’s face tightened and he leaned back into the house. “Levi! Get out here this second. You and Spencer.” The boys appeared and Mitch corralled them out onto the porch. “Miss Beaumont claims you were staring in her window. And that you vandalized her house with pumpkins.”

“It wasn’t vandalis—” Levi began, then clamped his hand over his mouth when his friend jabbed him in the ribs.

“Spencer,” Tim said. “What’s going on?”

Spencer was thin with reddish bangs that hung so low I couldn’t see his eyes. He sighed and pulled his hand from behind his back. In it, he held a magazine. “It wasn’t vandalism. It was sort of symbolic. You know, for Priscilla Pumpkin.”

My blood froze at the same time heat suffused my entire body. The boy flipped open the magazine to a centerfold. The woman wore nothing except a witch’s hat and a pair of iridescent black and orange lace panties. Bits of pumpkin rind and pulp were spread all over her body.

I don’t know how the picture had ended up in this magazine, this day, because it was taken fifteen years ago. I knew, because it was me.

“Mr. Clayton?” Sam called.

No answer. She caught a shadowed figure in her peripheral vision and whirled, her hand flying beneath her jacket to her shoulder holster.

An embarrassed laugh left her throat when she saw what had startled her. It was a life-sized cardboard cutout of Judge Mona Morrison. It stood just inside the door to the left, hidden from her view until she’d stepped inside.

Sam shook her head and glanced around the room. Something still didn’t feel quite right. Clayton was supposed to be here working all evening. Even the guard had thought he was here. He could have gone to the restroom, or maybe a break room for a cup of coffee. But the entire building felt deserted. As if she was the only living human here.

A clattering noise broke the silence, like something shaking around inside a box. It sounded like it was coming from this room, but she couldn’t identify its source.

She pulled her weapon and glanced behind her. Nothing.

“Mr. Clayton?” she called again, moving further into the room.

She made her way cautiously to his desk and when she peered behind it, she saw him. Or, at least, she assumed it was him, even though she’d never met him. He looked to be in his mid- thirties, short, neat brown hair and a goatee. Nice-looking man. Well, he had been a nice-looking man. Now he was a corpse.

He was lying half in, half out of his chair, his eyes wide and staring, his mouth contorted in a death grimace. His flesh was reddish and swollen, one eyelid slightly drooping.

Sam holstered her weapon and grabbed her lapel mic, calling for an ambulance as she knelt to check him. Putting her fingers against his pulse, she confirmed he was beyond help.

Despite the physical characteristics she’d noticed on his face, she didn’t see any visible signs of injury. Did he have a heart attack? He wasn’t old, but even the young were susceptible to heart problems. Sighing, she stood. As she did, she noticed a mark on Clayton’s neck.

Two small holes. Fang marks.

Sam went numb and at that moment, the clattering sound resumed. Only this time, she recognized it. It was a rattle… A snake.

He shoved her against the wall. She grunted with pain, looking up into his livid face, into his crazed eyes. This man had been in prison. True fear took hold, and her heart dropped to her stomach.  In a dark alley, the bastard could do whatever he wanted. No one would know. She drew in a breath to scream, but he clamped a calloused hand over her mouth.

“You ain’t callin’ for help, and you ain’t goin’ nowhere ’til I get some answers.”

Against the pressure of his hand, her  demands to be released were muffled. She shoved on his chest, but he didn’t budge. She couldn’t very well give him answers while he was impairing her ability to speak.

“Turn her loose.” The low, controlled voice  came from her left. She almost wept with relief.

Jake.

Donny Ray cut his eyes to the side, then back to Julia. “Ain’t none of your concern, Sheriff. Me and her was just having a little chat.”

He loosened his hold enough that Julia could turn her head. The rough brick wall ground against her skull. Jake stood a few feet away. The streetlight behind him illuminated his silhouette like an angel of mercy. He stood with a hand on one hip—the hip where his gun rested.

He tipped his hat back off his forehead. “She doesn’t look like she wants to chat, so I’m thinking you should probably turn her loose.”

“And if I don’t, what you gonna do about it?”

Jake’s shoulders lifted in a laconic shrug. “Don’t think you want to find out.”

I gripped the phone and squeezed my eyes shut. Although I realized there was something I should say that would make him give a clue to his identity, something I could share with the police, my mind wouldn’t work properly. Nothing clever came to me.

My mouth felt stiff when I made myself speak. “You did this… you killed her so I’d keep writing the articles?”

“We have a connection. I know you feel it too.”

“I don’t even know you. If you’re really the one doing this, please just stop.”

A low chuckle rumbled over the line. “Stop? I did stop, but my life wasn’t complete. Something has been missing. Now, you’ve given me a new purpose. I’d gotten bored with the girls… the same old routine, blah, blah blah. You made it fun again.”

“You killed her because of me? For me?”

“When I read your articles, something sparked.” He paused, and when he continued, I detected emotion in his voice. “I can’t explain it, but…” He sighed. “Forget it. I don’t want to get all gushy. You get me. I know you do. Did your detective friend tell you about the penny?”

“Penny?”

“Your pennies from heaven story inspired me. I left a penny in the girl’s hand, along with one of her teeth.”

Bile, thick and overpowering, clogged my throat. I swallowed hard and whispered, “One of her teeth?”

“Yeah. With a little coaxing, I got her talking. Telling me about her life. She lost her first tooth in ’03 when she was six. I found a penny dated 2003 and put it in her hand with the tooth. I bet the cops don’t want that released. There you go. A human interest touch for your article.” He sounded proud, like he’d just solved world hunger.

My body went cold. My mind whirled with warring thoughts… find out something useful… hang up… keep him talking…. But the will to contain the screaming inside my head was all I could manage.

He was here, at Oscar’s. The man with the thousand-watt smile and heavenly eyes. But tonight, rather than the clothing of a dock worker, he wore a smart gray suit with a black bow tie. His hat was gone, and his golden hair gleamed with threads of sunlight. What was he doing here? She inwardly snorted. Silly question. He was doing exactly what the other men were doing here. Looking for a good time. Her pulse sped up when he and Oscar headed toward her.

“Eliza, I’d like you to meet someone. Vincent Taggart, Eliza Gilbert.”

Eliza inclined her head. She didn’t reveal that she’d already met him. She wasn’t sure why, but it didn’t seem prudent. “How do you do.”

Mr. Taggart grinned like they shared a secret. “Very well, thank you.”

“Mr. Taggart will be your…date for the evening. You are to accompany him to the silver room.”

Eliza’s mouth went dry, and she tried to swallow, but couldn’t. This man had purchased an evening with her? Horsefeathers. Now he knew she was a…

Shame heated the skin on her face until she thought she would burst into flames. But there was nothing to do, no escape. She sucked in a deep breath and steeled herself for the humiliation. It was, after all, part of the deal in her line of work.

Oscar had made her go to dinner earlier this evening with a bloke who accosted her, right out on the street, but it hadn’t gone further than repulsive pawing while he had her pinned against his motorcar. The memory of his sweaty hands and moist mouth on hers brought nausea to her throat. Since the time with Killman, she hadn’t been required to sexually pleasure any other guests. But it appeared her luck had run out.

He studied her with intense blue eyes. The dimple on the right side of his firm mouth creased with a smile. For the first time, she noticed a scar on his slightly crooked nose. The man was a ruffian, so why did he make her pulse race?

God. What was wrong with him? He hadn’t been attracted to a woman since Annie. Damn sure not like this. He wished he hadn’t had those drinks this morning. Could she smell it on him? He reached into his shirt pocket, searching for a breath mint but coming up empty. Damn.

She was back in a few moments, but it seemed like hours. “I’m sorry. We don’t have the eighteen-ounce size in Lavender Dream right now. I’ll make some more later in the week if you want to come back.”

He’d asked for Lavender Dream? How manly. No wonder she’d given him an odd look.

He nodded. “I’ll be back. Later in the week.”

She returned his nod but didn’t speak. Her eyes were veiled, as if they held deep secrets. Nick wanted nothing more than to unlock those secrets. And not just whatever information she had about the Tin Man. He wanted to know everything about her. Hell, he just wanted to keep listening to her voice. Wanted to watch her face as she spoke. Inhale her fragrance. She smelled faintly of the smoky outdoors, like a campfire in the winter. She was warm yet cool. She was utterly fascinating.

He blinked rapidly, as if coming out of a trance. Guilt slammed into him with the force of a tidal wave. In the five years since Annie’s death he’d barely looked at another woman, and now he was lusting after a complete stranger? Muttering something in the way of a thank-you, he turned and groped for the front door. He stumbled outside of the shop, not able to breathe freely until he was standing in the fresh air.

“So you think someone killed her?”

“I don’t know. The thought makes my skin crawl. This is a small town. Everyone knows each other. Eleanor wasn’t exactly well loved. And, her family history caused some hard feelings around here, but I don’t know anyone who hated her. Leastwise not enough to want her dead.”

Was Jean right? Had the woman been murdered? Surely if that were true, there would have been evidence pointing to foul play. “Well, either way, accident, murder, or suicide, it’s very sad.”

“Yes. And poor Mr. Rush. He’s beside himself.”

“Mr. Rush? He knew her too?” Was she his girlfriend? Not his wife, their last names were different. But then, not all women took their husband’s names…

“Knew her? Well, I’ll say. She was his sister.”

“Oh no…his sister. He must be heartbroken.” Maybe that explained his irritable mood. I felt bad about my spiteful thoughts. The guy had lost his sister six months ago. No wonder he wasn’t exactly Mr. Sunshine.

“Yeah, he sure is. All the family he had. And our maintenance man, Holt, was her husband. The two of them ran the inn together, until Eleanor died.”

“I’m sorry. What a tragedy.”

Jean glanced around then leaned in as if to whisper a secret. “Tell me something, have you seen her…Eleanor’s…spirit?”

I frowned. “Her spirit? No, of course I haven’t. That’s ridiculous.”

“You don’t believe in ghosts?”

I let out a scoffing laugh. “Of course not.”

“Then why are you writin’ a book about paranormal stuff?”

Word traveled fast at the inn. “It’s to disprove the paranormal, not confirm it.”

She gave a smug smile. “We’ll see if you feel that way after you’ve been here a few days. I’ve seen Eleanor’s ghost.”

She pulled from his touch and pressed her fingers to his lips. “Don’t. Please, don’t.” Hearing him say the words tore her apart, even though they were the words she wanted to hear. “It doesn’t matter anymore. I can’t be with you.” Regret ripped through her heart “Not ever.”

He gripped her fingers and placed a soft kiss on the tips. She shuddered and tried to draw in a breath.

“Don’t say that.” His words were a tormented whisper. “Please don’t say that. I can’t lose you forever. I won’t.”

She squeezed her eyes shut. “I can’t, don’t you see? Every time I think of you…with her. I get sick to my stomach. And every time I see you, I think of that night.” She opened her eyes and stared directly into his. “Looking at you makes me sick.”

He flinched. “You can’t mean that.”

“I do. Don’t you understand? My mother has tainted you…tainted us. She taints everything she touches, and I’ll never be free of her.”

He compressed his lips, his voice harsh when he spoke. “That’s your choice. You can’t define yourself by your mother’s actions. We’re responsible for our own lives, our own destiny.”

She snorted a laugh. “That sounds awful nice, but I haven’t ever had control of my destiny, my life. I’m tethered to my mother as long as she’s alive.”

She turned away from his scrutiny—afraid he could see her darkest thoughts. See that sometimes, she wished for her mother’s death. Would he still think she was the girl of his dreams if he knew that?
