Author Interview with Kimberly Baer ~ New Release:  Out of Body, #Paranormal #Sci-Fi #YA #blog #wrpbks

Please help me welcome author Kimberly Baer…

Good morning, Kimberly. Please tell us a little about yourself, where are you from? Where do you live now? Family? Pets?

Sometimes I feel like a character in someone else’s novel. So much drama! My husband died unexpectedly when our children were six, eight, and twelve. Over the next decade-plus, I focused on raising the kids and putting myself through college. I didn’t date, because it didn’t seem fair to make the kids share their only parent with someone new. Eventually, the kids grew up, I got that college degree, and I landed a good job as an editor with a federal agency in my Pennsylvania hometown.

Then came the second blow: the agency I was working for shut its doors for good. I was fortunate to find a new job with a federal agency in the Washington, DC, area, but that meant I had to leave the town I’d lived in all my life. Saying goodbye to friends, neighbors, and family members—not to mention my comfortable house and idyllic suburban neighborhood—was one of the most heartbreaking experiences of my life.

Nonetheless, I made the transition and settled into my new life. I even met a wonderful man, Clint. Things were good until 2018, when Clint was diagnosed with a terminal lung disease. Only a lung transplant could save him, and the odds were low that a matching pair of lungs would become available in time. Miraculously, Clint got those new lungs. It’s now been four years since the transplant, and he’s doing well. Alas, my three children and two grandchildren live far away (Chicago and Sacramento), but I’m blessed to have Clint nearby. And as of now, the drama seems to have simmered down—for the time being, anyway!

Where did you get the idea for Out of Body? Sometimes I dream that I’m flying, and at one point I wondered, “What if these aren’t dreams? What if my spirit actually leaves my body when I’m sleeping and goes flitting around town?” Thus, the concept for Out of Body was born.

Why did you choose this genre (is it something you’ve written in before)? Many of my story ideas are rooted in some sort of paranormal or science fiction scenario. For instance, my first novel, The Haunted Purse, is about a girl who buys a vintage purse at a thrift store and learns that it’s inhabited by a ghost. I have a weird imagination, so I just run with whatever it churns out.

What is your favorite quote? “The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven.”(John Milton) This quote reminds me that attitude is everything. You can turn a negative into a positive (or at least mitigate it) by looking for the silver lining or simply choosing to make the best of every situation.

What is your most prized material possession? Why? I have a wall calendar from the year my husband died. His death occurred in April, and there’s a strange anomaly on that calendar page: the whole page is upside down! I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this particular calendar ended up in my hands. The metaphorical message is clear: my family’s world was about to be turned upside down, but we would be okay, since all the subsequent pages are right-side up. I’ve kept the calendar as a reminder that there’s more to existence than the world we see around us.

What’s your favorite book of all time and why? It’s impossible to pick just one, but two young adult series I really enjoyed were Neal Shusterman’s Scythe and Unwind. I’m a sucker for a unique premise and a well-written story, and Shusterman’s two series deliver on both counts. What’s your favorite childhood book? As a child, I would have said all the Nancy Drew books, especially The Secret in the Old Attic. As an adult, I have a different favorite: The Velveteen Rabbit. The ending never fails to choke me up.

Who is the most famous person you have ever met? Bill Cosby. He was the keynote speaker at my college graduation. I was the last student to walk across the stage, and he grabbed me in a bear hug, lifted me off my feet, and spun me around. I have photos of me in his arms. I gave one to my mom, and after the Cosby scandal hit the fan, she cut out a picture of Mark Harmon (her favorite actor at the time) and glued his face on top of Cosby’s.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and you could have 3 (inanimate) objects, what would they be? I’ve learned from watching Survivor that flint, a machete, and a tarp are essential. But I also have a less practical list: a fully loaded Kindle, a solar-powered Kindle charger, and my bed pillow. (Can I bring six items?)

What’s the main thing that you could get rid of in your life that would give you more writing time? Cooking! I hate doing it and would love to have a personal chef to prepare all my meals and bring them to me at my desk so I could keep working. (Naturally, this person would do the dishes, too.)

What do you want readers to come away with after they read Out of Body? My intent is not just to entertain but also to uplift and inspire. Let’s face it: life can be tough—and my stories reflect that. My characters endure all sorts of hardships, but they prevail in the end. They come through their struggles stronger and wiser. I hope readers are able to draw strength from that message, to internalize it. I want to plant the idea that no matter what life throws at you, you can get through it.

Blurb:

Those weird dreams Abby Kendrick has been having? Turns out they aren’t dreams after all. They’re out-of-body experiences, like the ones her cousin Logan is having. At first Abby has fun with her new ability, using it to spy on her neighborhood crush and spook a mean girl. But when Logan gets in trouble on the astral plane, the game changes, and Abby must bend the rules of out-of-body travel as she journeys to a distant realm. Her mission is a perilous one, and success is not guaranteed. Can she save Logan and find her way home again? Or will the cousins be lost forever on the astral plane?

Excerpt:

The girl slept on, never stirring, breathing deeply. Arms and legs akimbo, hair spread out like disconnected wires, mouth hanging open. Was that how I looked when I was sleeping? It wasn’t pretty.

Something twinkled below me, a translucent silvery cord tethering me to my body. I’d never noticed it in my dreams-that-weren’t-really-dreams, maybe because I hadn’t realized I was out of body. The cord, thick and round as Italian sausage, was weird but reassuring. I assumed it would keep me from getting lost, because no matter where I went, I could simply follow it back to my body.

But how did the cord work? Was it retractable like the cord on our vacuum cleaner? Stretchy like a bungee cord? If so, how far could it stretch? I wanted to test it for myself, but before I could do that, I needed to figure out how to move. For now, I was stuck in place like a stalled weather front.

A few nights ago, I’d traveled all the way to Sorcery Place. I’d gone to Sophia’s house, to Grandma’s. How had I done it?

More important, how could I get back into my body? I gave a psychic grunt, straining toward that sleeping form, but nothing happened. I was anchored to the ceiling as firmly as my physical body was anchored to the bed.

What if I couldn’t get back? What if I was stuck up here forever?

APP REVIEW:

An excellent romantic suspense with a unique premise. The author did a great job of showing the feelings and angst of the teacher/adult student attraction. And the murder mystery added a creepy edge that kept me turning pages. The setting was well-developed and vivid. The author’s writing is engaging. Highly recommend!

APP REVIEW:

I was completely captivated by this imaginative and entertaining story. The author really nails the middle grade ‘voice’ and the writing is smooth and vivid and compelling. I think young kids will adore this book. Even as an adult, I was enthralled.

I love the twin protagonists. Having two daughters of my own, I found the fighting one minute and being loving the next very realistic. I felt bad for them with their chaotic home life. But the adventure they embarked upon made up for all that. Although fraught with danger, it was an exhilarating experience and the girls were pretty bada$$. I definitely hope to read more books in the series. This one was a winner!

*********************************************

APP REVIEW:

I love ‘Friends to Lovers’ stories and this one is fantastic. The conflict and indecision about the hero and heroine getting involved romantically and Lucy giving Deon a second chance played out beautifully. The characters, even the secondary ones, were authentic and relatable. I would love to hang out with them for real. 🙂 Sweet, sexy, and tons of fun, A Little Bit of Lust is a truly entertaining and satisfying story.

APP REVIEW:

Wow…this author really knows how to weave an intense and twisty story. The premise is unique, and I was fascinated with the glimpse into the world of BDSM and the religious organization. David and Anna were fabulous protagonist, not perfect, but admirable and interesting. I found myself turning pages like crazy, wanting to find out who was behind the murders and all the other crimes. I was surprised and satisfied with the twist. An excellent read!

APP REVIEW:

A captivating story from beginning to end. I loved the element of the hunt for dinosaur bones. Not only did it create a great conflict between the heroine and hero, it was unique, interesting and informative. The setting was vivid and well conveyed. I loved the romance and couldn’t wait to see Una and Ryker get their happily ever after as they navigated the danger thrown at them. I highly recommend this western historical romance.

APP REVIEW:

A stellar historical romance with lots of interesting historical facts, which are filtered in organically and aren’t ‘in your face’ or unnecessary. I’ve read quite a few stories in the Wylder series, and it was fun revisiting some of the characters. The author’s writing style is engaging and vivid. I loved sexy gunman, Morgan, and Emily was a great love interest for him. Compelling and passionate, with a richly detailed setting, this story will not disappoint!

*********************************************

I loved the paranormal thread woven into this story. It was chilling and compelling. I always enjoy stories with a good secret, and this one definitely had that. The romance was passionate and the mystery interesting. The author’s love of horses came through vividly. She did a great job with setting and characters and I enjoyed seeing how everything played out. Highly recommend!

APP REVIEW:

Yikes! A wicked and heart-stopping read. The bad guy is soooo bad, but I almost felt sympathy for him. I know ‘edge of your seat’ is a cliché, but it perfectly describes this novel. I was glued to the pages and enjoyed every thrill and chill. I loved the Australia setting as well. Highly recommend!

APP REVIEW:

I was intrigued by the title and cover but wasn’t sure what to expect. I was not disappointed, though. The story is unique and compelling and I loved the main character. The mystery was a nice touch but mostly the story was about Lucy and her righting her wrongs and putting her past to rest. The author painted a vivid picture of the village where the story was set as well as the characters. A truly engaging read that I very much enjoyed.

APP REVIEW:

Yikes…a delightfully dark and frightening tale of wicked creatures–demons and shapeshifters, doesn’t get much scarier than that–and a team of hunters who are trying to stop them. The team members have issues of their own they’re dealing with, but they are strong enough to rise above. I have read the other books in this series and each one is unique and spooky and imaginitive. I really admire the author’s creativity and his penchant for the dark side.

The author weaves a harrowing, compelling story that opens with a hook and doesn’t let up. She must have done some deep research, because everything from the setting, to the plane, to the military aspects came across as very authentic. Her writing is so vivid, I actually felt like I was in the jungle. The emotion was tangible. I could feel Sloan’s grief over his sister. And the romance was passionate and perfectly developed. I highly recommend this fabulous novel.

This book was so beautifully written, that it literally made me cry. The spiritual aspect was heartwarming and the author’s love for God really came through in the writing. The romance had just enough passion without being too explicit and was perfectly done. I loved, loved, the ranch setting and all the ‘western’ themes. The hero and heroine were sympathetic yet flawed and I fell instantly in  love with them. Wonderful Christian Cowboy Romance!

Beth Daniels’ humor and personality really shine through in this informative and well-written ‘how-to’ book. I can see how she’s able to write such witty and entertaining novels. I’m not an author myself, but this book was still interesting and I can definitely see how it would be helpful to authors wanting to write funny mysteries. Give it a try…you won’t be sorry!

Oh wow…I was completely swept away in this medieval/fairytale romance. The characters and setting were perfectly done. I loved how the author interwove the mythology, legendas, romance and fairytale. It was beautifully written and kept me on the edge of my seat worrying for the princess. She is a great character and definitely not a damsel in distress waiting to be rescued. The evil queen is delightfully wicked. Just spectacular all the way around and I am very pumped to read more of this magical adventure.

Fantastic. spell-binding romantic suspense.  I could really sympathize with Jordan and I loved that her hero was a policeman. I admire law enforcement so much and Michael was a great hero. A truly wonderful, satisfying read.

A helpful and practical guide that will help you discover your passion and what to do once you have. I loved that the author used her own experiences as examples. While hers had to do with writing, and I’m not a writer, she explained it in a way that would be helpful no matter what your passion is. She spoke in plain and simple, common-sense terms and didn’t convolute it by being verbose or preachy. I enjoyed this immensely and I’m looking forward to trying the exercises provided in the book.

There was also a lot of witty banter, which I enjoyed. The writing was engaging and flawless. I was totally engrossed from beginning to end.

What a wonderful story! I was enthralled and impressed by the details of whisky making. It was just enough to hold my interest but not so much that I was bored with too much info. And Chloe Tanner is an admirable, strong heroine who takes on the task of saving her family’s failing distillery. She has more than her share of dangerous obstacles thrown at her and seeing the way she dealt with them was a treat. The romance with her competitor provided a lot of conflict. The historical setting was rich and vivid. A truly fabulous read!

This is the third book in a series, but it reads well on its own. It’s compelling from the opening and doesn’t let up. The main character, Darrell, is confronted by the ghosts of two children who need help. With lots of conflict, danger and high stakes, this novel is fast-paced and intense. Oh wow…I LOVED The Princess’s Knight. Such a unique and well-written story. It’s not every day that a heroine is villainous and the author did an excellent job of pulling it off and making me love Madeline, in spite of her faults. And Carl is a great hero. The setting of the showboat was different and so much fun. Passionate and rife with secrets and angst, The Princess’s Knight is a must read!

Cherry Shakes in the Park is a delightful, compelling mystery/romance with wonderful characters. I love the town of Bayside, which was so realistic and well-developed, it seemed like a character in the story. A short but sweet (literally, with all that yummy ice cream) read that I highly recommend.

As the years go by and he moves up in the force, he can’t get the woman out of his mind and is determined, no matter how long it takes, to find the person who did it. APP REVIEW:

GREAT Western Romance. The heroine, Felicity, had a tough decision to make, but she courageously did the right thing. The hero, Butch, was not a cookie cutter romance hero, but I loved him. The author did a great job of making them both seem so real and relatable. The Western setting was fantastic. Everything seemed so authentic. The consequences of Felicity’s actions make for an intense ride and created a compelling page-turning experience. Loved it!

APP REVIEW:

I saw where this book won first place in the National Excellence in Storytelling contest and I can see why. Wow. Not only is the premise unique and compelling, the execution is flawless. Allison is painted as a sympathetic character but is by no means helpless. After her experimental eye surgery, Allison is inexplicably able to see dragons. The story becomes so intense and fascinating after that point, that it’s difficult to put down. The author did a great job with the YA ‘voice’ and Allison seemed like a typical teenager, but she ends up having an extraordinary adventure and following her on that adventure was so much fun. Highly recommend.

I was captivated with this book from the opening and it kept my interest throughout. Phil is a great character who suffers some unfortunate events and then decides to leave town to get away from the fallout. When he picks up a hitchhiker in Oklahoma (where I live, so I was especially interested in the setting), things take some crazy turns. All sorts of twists will keep you guessing until the very end. Truly unique and enjoyable novel!

APP REVIEW:

Love, love the setting, characters, the plot, and…everything. Such a wonderful, sexy, emotional read. It was a unique and refreshing change that the heroine was the one who rescued the hero. She was a strong, smart, capable woman. Loved the hero as well…he was sexy and funny and kind. They were both fantastic characters. The writing was engaging and vivid. Excellent book!

APP REVIEW:

I absolutely loved this book! The way the author wrote made me feel very connected to the characters. I loved being in both EJ’s and Dylan’s heads. I could especially relate to EJ and her grief. Very emotional. The setting was vivid and I felt like I was there. I have read some of the other Wylder books, and it was cool finding the connections to the other stories. Filled with conflict, passion, and fabulous characters, Return to Wylder is a must read.

APP REVIEW:

A beautiful love story about two damaged but giving people who find each other. The heroine and hero were admirable and interesting, but not without flaws, which is difficult to pull off. The author did a great job with making the setting come alive, and the romance was sweet and passionate. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it!

I love football and enjoyed this story about a former football star and the woman he let slip away years earlier. An excellent second-chance romance. It kept me turning pages hoping these two would find their way to their happily ever after. I enjoy a romance with a good conflict, and this one had a great one.

I wasn’t sure what I was getting into with this book, but I was pleasantly surprised. The novel is imaginative and humorous. I loved following along with the main character and all his troubles and the situations he found himself in. The talking dog was a great character. If you want a unique and engaging read, check out I Just Wanted a Beer.

APP REVIEW:

Romance, danger, twists, and a Civil War ghost…what more could you want? Precious Treasures is fantastic! The small town setting was so well-developed I could actually see, hear and smell it. The characters were sympathetic and believable and my heart broke for Janie. There were many twists I did not see coming and I couldn’t turn pages fast enough. A truly wonderful read!

I enjoyed this trip into decades past. The ‘commune’ felt so vivid and real. The cast of characters is interesting and well-developed. I was immersed in the story and the details were wonderful. A unique and compelling story.

A fantastic, intense, suspenseful novel with the added bonus of being set in Oklahoma. The characters and setting came alive. I loved Phoebe and despised Jack. The author made them seem so real that I actually experienced an emotional reaction. The Native American culture and mysticism was beautifully woven into the story. Just an overall great and compelling read.

Oh my gosh. What a blast from the past. I loved the era this was set in. So much going on in the 60s and 70s and the author did a great job of taking me back to that time. Paul is a sympathetic character and a great protagonist, but he is not without flaws. Aurora is an awesome heroine. She’s strong and admirable and I love the way the relationship between her and Paul unfolds. This story is sad at times, but also inspiring. I would highly recommend.

REVIEW RATINGS– RISK or REWARD? by Cj Fosdick

Please help me welcome today’s guest with an interesting article on reviews…

REVIEW RATINGS– RISK or REWARD? by Cj Fosdick

Every writer knows that word of mouth and reviews can propel a new book into success. (At least six reviews are recommended for debut day.) So you enlist your best friends, beta readers, critique partners, and family members to review your baby. Pretty safe odds love rolls in for the “newborn!” LOW RISK only to biased honesty.

No time to bask in the lovelight. You create a media kit, blog, tweet, guest post on social media, organize a street team, host a launch party, do book signings, readings, advertise… everything it takes to announce and promote that book in the frenetic search for READERS. Competition is always huge when supply exceeds demand for books. A supply created, in part, by a flood of eBooks and the rise of Indie authors in the last few years. Does Amazon really have millions of books in their online catalog? Add review magazines and online review sites to the mix, and REVIEWERS are also in demand. It’s a Catch 22 when good books need to be discovered but discovery…and sales…often depend on reviews.

When the organic reviews are slow coming in, you DO have options to jumpstart. With no strings attached, paid reviewers will insure an honest review, but it’s a marketing expense that can burn a hole in your pocket. Kirkus and Chanticleer charge hundreds of dollars for a review—with no guarantee to even recommend the book. Still, you do have the option to post…or not if the review burns a hole in your heart. HIGH RISK for the expense.

“Nagging” is another option. A kinder word is “trolling.” If I know someone who has purchased a copy from me, I might ask for a review weeks or months later. Posting on FB, Goodreads, in your newsletters and emails, even on business cards you can gently “nudge” with links directed to your book sites. In the stash of prints I keep on hand to sell, I insert a little card in each book with my site links, along with a friendly review request. Readers who know you will not want to comply if they didn’t like your book, but even readers who loved it may feel unqualified to post a review, or unable to understand the process if they don’t navigate social media. MODERATE RISK to pride/friendship.

Networking with the brotherhood is another option. You’ve been inspired by other writers, followed their blogs, rubbed shoulders with other Indies or authors published in your Press. You share and commiserate with them. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “the only way to have a friend is to be one.” Can that be twisted into “the sure way to get a review is to write one?” Doesn’t every author swap reviews on occasion, particularly if they value an elevated review count that Amazon is sure to notice! If you swap with a writer in your genre, chances are good you already like their subject. And even if the book does not meet your rating standards, you can always find something nice to say after a short synopsis—minus any spoilers. Only another writer can appreciate the fact that writing a book is an accomplishment in itself. VARIABLE RISK to time consumed…and qualms about trading equal star ratings.

Whoever said “Reward never comes without risk” had to be a writer…or a cliff diver. Same thing, sometimes. (Diving into my newsletter and books is no risk. Promise!)

Thank you, Cj. Wonderful information! Readers, Cj would love reviews on The Accidental Stranger…

Jessica Brewster is being watched…and things go missing from the remote Wyoming home she shares with her toddler. In a freak accident, she shoots the bearded thief stalking her before she recognizes the mesmerizing green eyes that belong to the only man she ever loved.

Has Mitch bridged time to find her? In a race to save his life and change hers forever, she takes him into her home and heart. But his memory loss and puzzling clues curry doubt and expose mystery and danger. Is he truly her son’s father or an irresistible stranger in her arms?

Cj’s Bio:

Born and raised in Packerland, Cj moved west to the medical mecca in Rochester, MN where her writing career bloomed with published award-winning stories and articles to her novel series inspired by Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander. Rescued horses, dogs, cats, children and one patient husband have motivated the heart of Cj’s craft. Though living on a country hilltop haven for decades, she has ventured down on occasion to climb a Jamaican waterfall, float in the Dead Sea, kiss the Blarney Stone and research settings for her next novel.
