Where Were You in 1924?

The weekly Martini Club 4 post is up…fun, quick trivia and a chance to win a signed, print book of all four MC4 stories in one!

Alicia Dean's avatarMartini Club 4

If you’re young like me, you weren’t yet born in 1924. 😉 However, many interesting things took place that year. When we decided to set our MC4 stories in 1924, I began researching events, styles, terminology, etc, although I didn’t end up using all of them. I’ve shared some tidbits I discovered below. See if you can guess which of these made it into my Vintage Romance Novella, Ruined:

*** One commenter will receive a print copy of Martini Club 4 – The 1920’s, containing all four novellas, signed by all four authors (only U.S. residents eligible) Winner will be drawn a week from Monday, March 16th.

MC4+Banner_resized

So I’m kicking off the official Martini Club 4 blog with some of the planning issues the four of us ran into, last minutes freakouts, and promo ideas we ran into along our 1 and ½ year journey of getting this series going from conception to publication. As you may have realized, all four stories were released on Thursday, February 26th.

So here we go.

In a message dated 12/30/2013 11:52:07 A.M. Central Standard Time, amccabe7551@yahoo.com writes:

I’m getting started on my story opening, which features everyone on the ship going to NYC!  What I need from all of you right now is a physical description of your heroine, and her reason for being on the ship…
Thanks!!
Ammanda

Sorry I’m just now responding. My  heroine was hanging around the docks, she’s been on the street since her mother, who was a servant, passed away and the owner…

Rogue’s Son by Darcy Flynn – ON SALE for 99¢

RoguesSon6_850

Blurb:

Tough, driven Kit Kendall has replaced her frills and dresses with no nonsense haircuts and wranglers, years ago. As owner of Sage Brush, the once thriving west Texas bed and breakfast ranch, she now struggles daily to keep her business afloat. Since McCabe Resort Lodge reopened next door as a multi-million dollar hotel, her financial difficulties compound, as she suffers one cancellation after another.

Just when she thought things couldn’t get any worse, Kit’s childhood sweetheart turned nemesis returns as the new owner of the resort that’s now putting her out of business, resurrecting memories she thought she’d buried long ago.

Cowboy, entrepreneur Sam Dawson has returned to Sugar Creek, Texas after six years of exile with a secret that could destroy Kit’s happiness. He left town because of it and for the past two years has secretly tried to make it right. Having failed, he now returns to make one last attempt to undo the tangled web created by his father.

Set in motion by his father’s Last Will and Testament and with the clock ticking, Sam has only weeks to convince Kit to sell him her ranch or reveal the truth that will break her heart.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Excerpt:

“Daisy’s a fine person. She deserves some happiness,” Sam said.

“Kit stared at him. “Yes, she does, but not for the same reason you’re thinking. She and my father loved each other. They were doing fine until . . .”

“Until my father destroyed him. Is that what you were going to say?”

“You said it, I didn’t.”

“You didn’t have to. It’s in your expressions, your bearing, your eyes. You’re eaten up with it. I’d hoped time and distance would have helped you to see things differently. It’s time you put the past behind.”

Kit stood and glared at him, a mutinous expression on her face. “I know perfectly well what time it is. I think you should go now.”

Sam set his half-empty bottle of Shiner on the side table and stood. He leveled an intent, fiery gaze at her. “I’m sorry you still feel that way. Unfortunately, it doesn’t change what I’m about to do.”

He wrapped his hand around Kit’s neck and pulled her against him. She stiffened at his touch. If it were any other woman but Kit that resistance would have had him dropping his hands and stepping away. But he was determined to feel her pouty lips against his. He’d thought of nothing else since their confrontation in the parking lot at the lodge. He deliberately held her gaze before he planted a brief but crushing kiss against her angry lips, sending a shock wave through his entire body.

He released her. “Now, that’s a reason to hate a Dawson.” He settled his Stetson on his head, then strode to the door. “I’ll save you the trouble of throwing me out.”

The Marriage Trap – Fun Fact and More from Marissa Garner

I am happy to share Marissa Garner’s debut release – The Marriage Trap – published through The Wild Rose Press. I have known Marissa for years, and I am thrilled that her fabulous story is finally out for the world to enjoy. I was fortunate enough to be Marissa’s editor on this novel. It was great working with her.

Without further ado…

The Marriage Trap by Marissa Garner – Contemporary romance novel

She dreams of marriage; he thinks the institution is a trap

Fun fact:

My favorite Hawaiian island is Maui, so it seemed only natural to make it the setting for my Hawaiian Heat series. Maui is magical. From the lush rainforest of the Iao Valley to the “moonscape” of the Haleakala volcano, from the rushing Hana Waterfalls to the windy Kaanapali beaches, the island offers a kaleidoscope of experiences. Balmy tropical breezes, sun-drenched white sand, and pounding teal surf provide the perfect relief from everyday stress and rev up a couple’s libido. That’s why I decided Maui was the ideal place for my characters to fall in love.

BLURB:

Ginny Fitzgerald has always dreamed of marriage and motherhood. But when she escapes her domineering former fiancé to attend a two-month writing seminar, she discovers more about herself than about fiction. Sparks fly and then ignite when she meets enigmatic Drew Morgan. He melts her reserved façade and unleashes her repressed passions. Sadly, Ginny believes she can never achieve her goals with Drew and fears the only happily-ever-after in her future is the one she’s writing for her romance novel.

Drew thinks marriage is a trap, and he’s made a pact with his brother to remain bachelors forever. Even when the Hawaiian Heat welds love and lust into his dream soul mate, he can’t marry Ginny. After she declines his invitation to live with him, he must choose between his opposition to the chains of marriage and the possibility of a lifetime of happiness.

EXCERPT:

“Virgin?”

Ginny Fitzgerald whipped her head around. “Excuse me?

“Virgin?” the man repeated. “Not you, sweetheart, your drink. You told your boyfriend no, but he ordered for you anyway before going to the john.” The bartender smiled and leaned closer. “I thought maybe you’d like to go virgin on this drink without him knowing.”

“Thanks, but I don’t want the drink at all,” she said. “And he’s not my boyfriend.”

“Just kidding.” He winked. “But whoever the guy is, he’s working damn hard to get lucky tonight.”

Ginny shrugged. “I know that. I’m not a moron. I’ve been trying to politely discourage him.”

“Need help?”

“No, thanks. I’m handling it.”

“Good to know. I hate to see slime sneak up on nice girls.”

He wiped a small towel across the bar in front of her, but still held her gaze. Even in the dim lighting, his eyes twinkled an amazing teal blue like the water over the coral reefs.

“How do you know I’m a ‘nice girl’?”

He stroked his chin. “Let me count the ways. One, you don’t let someone push you into drinking more than you want. Two, you flinch every time that guy touches you, which means you recognize the jerk for the player he is. Three, and most important, if that type appealed to you, you would’ve left with him already.” A cocky grin lit the man’s face. “Definitely a nice girl.” With another wink, he moved down the bar to take a couple’s order.

Sneaking a discreet peek, Ginny watched the bartender’s efficient, fluid movements as he mixed drinks and chatted with the customers. And there was a lot more about him to admire. The sun had woven wheat-colored streaks through his wavy, chestnut hair and bronzed his face and arms, giving him a healthy, outdoorsman appearance. The short sleeves of his Hawaiian print shirt revealed taut muscles, and his khaki cargo shorts hugged narrow hips and a sweet ass.

Hot, hot, hot…

After a mental shake, she swiveled on the barstool, her gaze sweeping around the buzzing bar and reaching the crowded dance floor. Friday night was cranking up. The brilliant colors of the tropical motif added another layer of sensual heat to the already sizzling scene. Temperatures and decibels were on the rise. Upscale Club Lahaina vibrated with pulsing music. Uninhibited dancers pumped and gyrated, performing erotic mating rituals. Their wild abandon mesmerized Ginny and tugged at a longing she was reluctant to acknowledge.

With a heavy sigh, she swung back toward the bar, determined to keep the sadness swelling in her chest at bay. Hoping to boost her spirits, she’d stopped at the popular club in the charming little tourist town of Lahaina to toast her newfound freedom only because she didn’t want to face her silent, empty condo. Even though she’d chosen an inconspicuous seat at the end of the bar, a jerk had still managed to intrude on her private celebration.

Guest Strumpet: Alicia Dean & How a Cover is Born

I’m blogging with Tea and Strumpets on the birth of my cover…

Tracey Livesay's avatarTea N Strumpets

Welcome Guest Strumpet Alicia Dean! Her Tea of Choice: Because it’s October, Pumpkin Spice Brulee Oolong

Alicia Dean Tin Man Color

For me, the cover is one of the most exciting things about publishing a book. It is extremely important that a cover be eye-catching and accurately convey the tone of your story.

For my latest release, Without Mercy, I worked with Steven Novak for the first time. It took us a few tries, but he created a cover that I fell in love with. I thought I would show the ones that didn’t make the cut…

Cover 1:

adeancover1

I like this, but I thought the girl was a little too ‘model-like’ and a little too nonchalant for a mother in crisis.

Second attempt:

adeancover2

I personally liked this one a lot, but I ran it by a group of author friends and most of them thought the mother looked too frightened and they didn’t…

Elvis Presley – Ramblings of a Lifelong Fan – Part 11 – A Quick One

This is going to be brief, but I didn’t want to skip a week. It’s been a very, very busy week. And a sad one. I lost my precious Uncle Peck this morning. He was 95, and he was ready to go, but those he left behind will feel his loss deeply.

uncle peck

(See, I love him so much, I even posted a pic of him wearing a Sooners cap :))

Also, we learned that my son, Presley, who is twenty-one, has fibromyalgia. That is heartbreaking as well, because he’s such a great kid, such a big-hearted and funny and wonderful young man. I hate the thought of his going through so much pain for the rest of his life. But, we are also extremely grateful, because the doctor was testing him for something more serious, such as possibly ALS. So, while I’m not thrilled about the diagnosis, I’m considering it a blessing.

As always in my life, when times are difficult, Elvis makes me feel better. Therefore, I’ll just share something brief about him. First of all, a funny memory (funny to me). When we were little, I used to tell my sister, Ruth, that when Elvis sang ‘Stuck on You’ he was singing to me because of the line: “I’m gonna run my fingers through your long black hair.” (I had long dark hair). She would get SO mad. 🙂

Now, a beautiful pic:

EP Blue

And, in closing, an amazing performance of Elvis singing How Great Thou Art. This is for you, Uncle Peck.

Kindle Unlimited—Good or Bad for Authors?

Very interesting article about Kindle Unlimited. I can see a potential benefit to Indie authors, if they are willing to go KDP Select. However, for small publishers, I’m not sure. Indie authors must go to KDP Select, and I assume traditional publishers have a choice, but what about the smaller publishers?

Feel free to share your thoughts, concerns, or endorsements. And, if you have any experience with Kindle Unlimited, we’d love to hear from you.
