Taking a Chance by Judi Phillips – New Release

Please help me welcome today’s guest, Judi Phillips with her new release, Taking a Chance

First off, thanks, Alicia, for inviting me to visit with you.  It’s great to be here.

You’re welcome. Happy to have you!

Today I want to share with you my latest release, Taking a Chance.  This is the second book in the Chances Are … Series.

A little backstory.  Ghost of a Chance is the first book in this series, where the heroine is denying any psychic abilities and the hero unknowingly buys a haunted house.  Halfway through the story, the heroine’s mother, Aerial, arrives.  Frankly, she takes over the story.  I had to sit down and have a serious conversation with her, reminding her I was telling her daughter’s story, and if Aerial would just be patient, I’d tell her story.  And here it is.

Blurb for Taking a Chance:

A psychic.  A cop.  A lover of conspiracy theories.  And a kidnapping cold case.  Available now.

Can Aerial Bonné, a free-spirit psychic, and Frank O’Malley, a skeptical cop, work together to solve an abduction that happened over thirty years ago?

She’s all about feelings and wants a fling with no commitments.  He’s all about protection, strength and being in control.

The bad guy kidnapped a little girl, who’s now his “daughter”.  Over the years, he’s become increasingly paranoid and believes every conspiracy he’s heard about.  Now he believes Aerial is plotting against him.

Even though they’re falling for each other sparks fly when things go wrong, will his job, her temporary visit in Minnesota and the bad guy keep them apart?

Excerpt from Taking a Chance:

“I know you’re off-duty, but do you mind if I ask you a possible work-related question.”

Frank was thankful for the change of topic. “Another missing music box?” he asked with a smile, remembering the first time they’d met. She had insisted the police department be called about Sara’s missing music box.

“No, this time it’s about a missing girl.”

His smile faded at the solemn expression on her face. “What about it?”

“I had the oddest dream last night.”

He folded his arms across his chest. “Oh?”

Aerial waved her hand dismissively.  “Never mind. Probably just my overactive imagination. I won’t bother you with it.”

“It’s no bother.”

“No, it’s nothing. Just a silly dream.”

“Are you sure? I’m a good listener.”

She shook her head.

“You’ve probably watched one too many reruns of Without a Trace.”

She stared at him a minute as if she intended to say something, then closed her mouth firmly. “You’re probably right.”

Son of a gun. He’d obviously said something wrong. “Look, I’m sorry for teasing you. I do want to hear what you have to say.”

“It’s okay. I know. It was a crazy question.”

Her reluctance to say anything more tweaked Frank’s interest. What had stopped her? No matter the situation, he always wanted to pull the loose thread to see what unraveled. She’d given him an opening, and he decided that was a good excuse to see her again. “How about we go out to dinner? I can check around, and we can talk about this more.”

She hesitated a moment, just long enough for him to realize he really wanted her to say yes. “I’d like that. When are you thinking?”

“How about Saturday?”

“That will work. I’ll ask Betty if she can watch Jenny. My granddaughter,” she added in response to his raised eyebrow.

“Great.” What a doofus. Couldn’t he come up with something better to say? He couldn’t believe how tongue-tied he was around her. Good thing he wasn’t in the dating market. And he hadn’t just asked her for a date. He merely wanted to satisfy his curiosity about her.

“I’ll let you know for certain. I’m sure we will see each other at the Bean.”

* * *

As he exited the door, he nearly bumped into a guy loitering outside. Frank quickly assessed him. Middle-aged, mussed hair, rumpled clothes, refusing to meet his gaze. Might mean something — or nothing at all. The guy didn’t smell like a homeless person. Likely just lived on his own. Probably not a threat. But he didn’t look like the usual kind of customer Frank expected to see at The Herbal Emporium. He’d keep an eye out for the guy, see if he showed up here again.

Bio:

Judi has had stories in her head as far back as she can remember. However, being lazy (her friends like to point out that she’s efficient), and being a legal assistant, she knew she could never complete a manuscript if she had to write it on a typewriter. Then, along came word processors, and those magic cut and paste and delete icons. There was no stopping her after that. Within a few weeks of her first job with a computer, she started her first story, a house-beautiful, vogue thing about lawyers. Needless to say, it will never be published — but she honed her description skills on that project, so nothing is ever wasted.

Judi has recently relocated to New Mexico and is living in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains.  No more Februarys in Maine for her. She lives with two dogs, a Yorkie, Mishka, and a MinPin, Gizmo, who have acclimated easily. Despite their small size, they rule the house.

Currently, Judi  has 13 books published in varying lengths and from sweet to spicy to very hot.  Seven are by Judi Phillips and six are by Pepper Goodrich.  Judi and Pepper each have at least one more book to be published this year.  In addition, the Campfire Circle stories, four of them previously published in serial form in the Windham Eagle newspaper, will be republished this year. A fifth short story, involving multiple wedding disasters, has been added to the series, plus a novella.

Night of Turmoil is my favorite.  It’s set in Tunisia at the beginning of the Arab Spring.  My daughter-in-law is Tunisian and I was in Morocco when it started.

Author Interview with Maggie West and New Release: Picked to Death

Please help me welcome today’s guest, Maggie West…

Good morning, Maggie. Thank you for joining me today. Please tell us a little about yourself.

I’m originally from the Midwest but now live in the Southwest in a small mountain town. My cat and I live in a tiny house surrounded by tall pines. He likes to watch the squirrel or bird channels but also loves the rare chipmunk shows as well.

Where did you get the idea for Picked to Death?

I decided to write the Antique Pickers in Paradise Cozy Mystery series because I’m lover of vintage and antique things as well as mysteries! I sell some vintage things to local shops and online, so it’s been fun creating these characters, who seem to always come across a dead body in their hunt for treasures.

What book have you read that you wish you had written?

I adore John Irving’s writing and would love to write something even half as good as The Cider House Rules. It’s my favorite book and I’ve read it at least three times. In fact, I’m about due to enjoy it again soon!

Do you have another occupation, other than writer?

I’m also a copyeditor and have worked fixing other writers’ grammar and spelling and such for most of my adult life. I prefer writing though!

What do you dislike that most people wouldn’t understand?

I have a totally irrational fear of lizards.

Do you collect anything?

The better question might be, do you not collect anything? No, seriously, I don’t collect everything but I do collect a lot of stuff. I’ve had collections of pigs; vintage kitchen utensils like aluminum measuring cups and spoons, funnels, cookie cutters; old advertising yardsticks and wooden rulers. I could go on and on.

What’s your favorite book of all time and why? What’s your favorite childhood book?

As I mentioned in the first question, my favorite book of all time is The Cider House Rules by John Irving. It is a great story, is well written, and cracks me up and makes me cry. It has everything! My favorite childhood book? Let’s see. I loved Charlie the Tramp by Russell and Lillian Hoban. Charlie is a beaver who runs away from home, every child’s dream. Right!?

What is your favorite quote?

May your troubles be less and your blessings be more and nothing but happiness come through your door. It’s an Irish blessing or quote that my mom wrote on a scrap of paper and sent to me years ago. I have it taped to my computer monitor still.

Have you written any other books that are not published?

Of course! I’ve written several novels that I tried to get published via traditional publishers. I had a little interest but nothing came of it. I might dust them off one of these days and publish them myself.

Your favorite…

Movie:  Love Actually

Music:  Leonard Cohen

Food:  Yes! I love to eat and would say my favorite meal is anything spicy and delicious (Mexican, Thai, Vietnamese, Italian, and on and on) and for dessert is my homemade carrot cake.

Sports team: none, seriously, no thank you

Which do you prefer: Board games/card games or television? I love them all at different times. I love a good game of Scrabble or Wits and Wagers or Blokus. I love to play poker but still need the rules and rank explained to me nearly every hand. And I watch way too much TV! A couple of my favorite shows are The Americans and Detectorists.

Thank you, Maggie…what fun getting to know you! Now, please tell us about your book…

pickedtodeathcover

Blurb: Antique pickers Sherri Green and her bff, lovable town gossip Carol O’Brien, search for treasure amid the trash in their small midwestern town of Paradise.

What they find is more than they bargained for.

When they score a box of antique vases at a local auction in nearby Round Bottom, it sets off a chain of events that makes a competing picker see red. But that’s not the worst of it. Someone in the tight-knit picking community ends up dead.

Can Sherri and Carol discover the murderer from a treasure trove of suspects before the crime gets buried along with the the town’s most hated victim?

Picked to Death is a clean, short read. It’s perfect for lovers of cozy mysteries that feature an amateur sleuth.

Be sure to check out book 2, Cotton Picking Murder, and book 3, Picked On, in the Antique Pickers in Paradise cozy mystery series for more small town fun and crime solving in the close-knit community of Paradise.

Excerpt: From the corner of her eye, Sherri watched Kathy Vaughn talking to Al Blandon, both fellow pickers. The sixty-something year old woman was gesturing in their direction, maybe even at the box Carol was rummaging through. Then Kathy began inching forward till her face was inches from Al’s. Sherri shivered at the exchange, glad Al was the one on the receiving end of Kathy’s scheme this time.

Sherri nudged Carol. “Look. I wonder what Crabby Kathy’s up to.”

Kathy Vaughn was a fellow picker, a member of the Pope County Pickers Club, and a pain in the rear end. She was rude, greedy, and most of all unethical. Once at a flea market where the pickers from the club had rented a large space to try to unload some rejects, Crabby Kathy had shown up early. She backed her car in at an angle taking up the entire space behind the booth. Normally three cars or a couple of trucks could have squeezed in to make unloading their wares easier. And since no one ever carpooled with Kathy, seeing that she was downright horrible, she had done as she pleased. As usual. When the other two truckloads of pickers had arrived, they had to park in the lot a good quarter mile away and haul their stuff to the space on foot. All because Crabby Kathy had refused to move her car.

“Ever Since” – New Release by Dorothy Callahan – #99Cents

Please help me welcome Dorothy Callahan with her latest release…

Thank you for having me! I’m excited to be sharing a bit about my new release, which is a slight diversion from my normal writings. I tend to write action/adventure/romance, but with Ever Since, I felt Cora had a different story to tell. After all, she’s stuck home with her family over the holidays, hiding the fact she just lost her job, and who did her Nana invite to stay with them but the one man who broke her heart? Add a Nor’easter and the biggest bash of the year, and you’ll see why Cora is all sass and crass when it comes to Matty.

If you love animals like I do, you’ll be happy to see them pop up in all my stories. Cora is no exception; she’s a licensed veterinary technician with a rescued bunny who finds herself roped in to taking care of all the family’s pets while she’s there.

Cora is first introduced in my book “IMPENETRABLE: Let No One In,” which is available for FREE right now on my website, www.dorothycallahan.com. All I need is the email address to send it to and it’s yours! (She shows up again in “CRAZY LITTLE FLING,” too.)

dcallahan-72dpi-1500x2000

Blurb:

Gorgeous. Scottish. A musician—but not in the traditional sense. No, Matteu MacKenzie is one of the best bagpipe players around—a Master Piper. And Cora had given her heart to him, only to have him break it by choosing his music over her. But a secret they share is tearing them apart, and unless Cora is willing to acknowledge what happened, Matty feels their love can never be redeemed. And by midnight on New Year’s Eve, their chances will expire.

EVER SINCE

they met as teens, they clicked. Completely.

EVER SINCE

they started dating, they knew they belonged together.

EVER SINCE

the car accident that ended innocent lives, Cora has been on her own—abandoned, bereft, betrayed by the only man she’d ever loved.

EVER SINCE

the day Matty’s distracted driving almost cost Cora her life, he’s been unable to cope with how deeply he failed her.

They have not been the same

EVER SINCE.

Interested to see how they interact? Here’s one of the first scenes with them together, having come in from the cold after wrangling Cora’s mom’s horses back into the barn:

Perhaps he sensed her thoughts, because once more Matty leaned in. “Roll in to me, mo chridhe. Yer family is starting to find yer actions a wee bit cold to me.”

Cora hissed, “Just because Nana and Mom haven’t told anyone doesn’t give you carte blanche to pretend nothing is wrong between us.”

“Aya, everything is wrong. We’re but inches apart, yet I canna see over yer walls.”

“Walls you put there.”

“Aya. Walls I intend to knock down.”

“Intend away, but you made your choice. These are the consequences.”

“Aya, but a decision made in panic, mo chridhe, is no decision at all. I was blind with fear and pain and desperate to prove maself to ye.”

Despite his pathetic attempt at a plea, it was his familiar endearment that made Cora turn to glare at him. “Stop calling me that. I mean it. And panic or no, you had fourteen months to contact me. Which you didn’t. Which means we’re done.”

She couldn’t read his expression, but it seemed guarded. “No, lass. We’re na done until death has stolen me.”

“Stolen me. I could have died in that hospital, but you left anyway.”

His eyes swept down, the long lashes fanning against his cheeks, sending shadows along his high cheekbones as the fire undulated before them. “Aya, I’ve failed ye.”

“Yes. You have.”

Her declaration made his lips curl. “Ye never mince words, Cora. It’s what I’ve always admired so about ye. Life is black and white to ye. No gray. Ever.” He nodded once and got up, tucking the wool blanket around her as he left the living room.

And Cora finally got to sit before the fire in absolute silence to enjoy her cocoa.

Funny, it seemed so much hotter only seconds ago.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dorothy Callahan is one of those authors who annoys other authors by refusing to be tied down to one genre. If a tale demands to be told—even if she’s never read a single story like it—she’ll find a way to write the book of her heart. This is the only way to quiet those demanding characters begging to be heard.

She lives in New York with her wonderful husband, a pride of demanding cats, and two loyal dogs, all rescued from shelters (well, not the husband). Her love of both animals and writing prompted her to start READ AND RESCUE, an organization where animal-loving authors and readers can find one another. The unique aspect to this group is that each author pledges a portion of proceeds to his/her favorite animal cause.

When Dorothy is not writing, she enjoys shopping for antiques and renovating their pre-Civil War house. If you are interested in learning more about Dorothy or how to help other animals in need, please visit her at dorothycallahan.com, dorothycallahanauthor@gmail.com, Facebook at Dorothy Callahan Author, or Twitter under Dorothy Callahan@Callahanauthor.

Thank you, Alicia, for letting me join you today! I hope you had fun getting to know these two characters a bit. I enjoyed the chance to share.

New Release: Unimaginable Lover by Rosalie Redd

Today’s guest, Rosalie Redd has a very special interview for us…

Want to meet Tanen, the hero of Unimaginable Lover, book 3 in the Warriors of Lemuria series? I sat down with him for a brief interview…

Did you turn out the way your parents predicted?

Tanen adjusts himself in the chair and straightens the collar on his shirt. His brow furrows. “Much to my chagrin, no. My father was a warrior. I was a disappointment to him.”

I squirm in my seat. I am uncomfortable in the presence of this large male. “Why is that?”

He crosses his arms, his biceps bulging tight against his shirt sleeves. “Because I didn’t follow in his footsteps. Instead, I chose to pursue knowledge and my love of the ancient scriptures.”

What is your most treasured possession?

Tanen traces his finger along the pin that graces his collar. The silver metal, in the shape of the letter M, reflects the overhead lights with an unearthly glint. “My pin. It signifies my status as council leader and represents Lemuria and life ever after.”

I stroke my fingers over the keyboard as I record his comments. The sound echoes around the large chamber, and a cool breeze runs over my shoulder. Goosebumps form.

He leans back in his chair and touches one of the sunstones lining the cave walls. The gem flares, brightening the room and the air warms. “Is that better? The crystals will take away the chill.”

“Thank you, Tanen.”

What do you value most?

He studies me for a moment before answering, his gaze flicking over my features. “King Noeh’s respect. I will do whatever he asks to help win this war against our enemy, the Gossum, and for our goddess, Alora.”

I can’t help but smile at his sincerity.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

The muscles in his arms visibly tense. His gaze tracks to my necklace, and he cracks his knuckles. “I’d rather not say.”

My unease is once again forefront in my mind. The chair is suddenly rock-hard beneath my bottom and no amount of heat in the room will take away the chill running down my spine.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?

The smile returns to his face. His blue eyes swirl with gold flecks, mixing together in a beautiful dance.

Despite my nervousness, I’m mesmerized.

He winks. “Ignorance.”

When he didn’t elaborate further, I clear my throat. “Time to move on.”

What scares you?

He places his arms on his thighs and leans forward. “Failing my king.”

I wouldn’t want to face this warrior in a dark alley.

What happens after you die?

A slow smile curls his lips, twinkling the blue in his eyes once again. “When a warrior dies his soul returns to Lemuria, back to the character board to fight again in another war on another planet.”

“Thank you, Tanen, for the interview.”

He places his hand over mine and gives it a gentle squeeze. “You’re welcome, Rosalie.”

Thank you, Rosalie and Tanen. I enjoyed getting to know you. Now, pelase tell us about your story…

unimaginableloverothersites

Blurb:

A shifter and a human together? Unimaginable…

One careless decision. The colony betrayed. Tanen’s only course is a desperate hunt for justice, but his solo mission is cut short when he’s mortally wounded during a fight. Rescued by a sweet, innocent female who nurses him back to health, he can’t deny the passion that burns between them. Now he must choose between his duty and honor or his desire for the precious, but forbidden, human female.

Broken promises and ruined love hardened Sheri’s heart. When she finds an injured and extraordinarily sexy man on her property, she’s pulled into a world she never imagined. As she nurses him back to health and they bond over their love of books, she’s torn between the lessons she learned from her rough past and the need to seek solace in Tanen’s arms, but she must learn to trust him, and herself, in order to survive.

Excerpt:

Sheri’s pulse raced as a strange mixture of shock and desire coursed through her veins. The tall, muscular stranger pinned her against the wall. One second she’d pressed 9-1—on her phone and the next, she was here, in his arms.

His biceps bulged, and she had a sudden urge to run her fingers over them, feel the steel that was below the surface, but her hands were trapped at his hips. She gripped his taut waist, and his heat bore into her, warming her fingers, tingling the sensitive nerves. Although caged in his embrace, he was gentle with her, holding back the strength that ebbed from him in waves. As he leaned in, his breath cascaded over her shoulder, warm and enticing.

“No infirmary.” His gravelly, rough command came out on a whisper.

She should’ve feared him, this stranger in her home trapping her in his arms, but instead, her insides melted, warmed by his touch, his voice, his scent. Something about him made her long for more.

So focused on the man who held her so close, she hadn’t noticed Coop. His insistent barks echoed through the house.

The man tensed, and in the process his lean body pressed tighter against hers. Her skin prickled at the contact.

With a quick glance over his shoulder, she caught sight of her pet. He growled, his lips curled over his fangs.

“No, Coop. Stop!”

His back legs bunched in preparation for his attack.

The man didn’t release her, but turned to face her dog. He held out one hand, palm open. “Halt.”

Coop’s growl faded.

He took a tentative step forward.

His nose quivered, and a small whimper eased from his chest. Her pet, an ex-police dog trained to track and defend, placed his muzzle under the stranger’s palm.

She gasped. If she hadn’t seen this for herself, she wouldn’t have believed it. He patted Coop on the head, and the dog’s tail beat against the floor.

The man’s eyes were red-rimmed, and sweat coated his forehead. “I have to leave…”

His eyes glazed over, and his grip around her waist loosened.

As her hands traveled along the space between them, her fingers trailed over the firm muscles of his abdomen and chest. The strength and power under his skin lit up her nerves. She moved a stray hair away from his brow and focused on his eyes. Bottomless pools of blue, they reflected the pain hidden behind his features.

Her chest constricted. “Please, let me help you.”

His gaze fell to her mouth, and he reached up to stroke her bottom lip with his thumb, teasing her. “How? Like this?”

Before she could stop him, he slipped his hand around the base of her neck and pulled her close. His mouth hovered over hers for the briefest moment. She closed her eyes, aware that doing so was an invitation all its own. Warm and welcoming, his lips tasted of musk and pepper. With unexpected tenderness, he teased her with his tongue, caressing the crease between her lips. The sensitive nerves tingled at the contact and she inhaled, parting her mouth.

Moaning softly, he deepened the kiss, and explored her. His tongue brushed the sore spot in her mouth, but instead of pain, his smooth caress eased some of the ache. The passionate need in his kiss bore into her, sending a wave of desire to her core. Beneath the thin material of her shirt, her nipples peaked, and she couldn’t hide her reaction to him. A slow groan rumbled in his chest.

New Release: Training Tessa by Debra Doggett

Please help me welcome Debra Doggett, a fellow Authors Helping Authors member who has a brand new release!

I used to tell people I got a history degree because I didn’t have to take math classes for it. That was only part of the reason, but back then being a history nerd didn’t give off the best aura. Even my dad said he didn’t understand how I could take those classes because history was boring. It was one of the few things we disagreed on. Growing up, my hero was James Michener. It wasn’t only that he could write like nobody else, but he wrote history. His work inspired me, and one day I plan to write my own historical epic. My first attempt at dipping my toe into that goal was Training Tessa. I set this story in Renaissance Italy, one of my favorite time periods. It gave me an excuse to dig back into that time and place, making the writing fun. One of the biggest reasons for it, however, was the way sensuality permeated art, and life. Yes, there were lots of naysayers, but artists in particular began to look at the human body as sensual. That concept fit well with the story. I hope the story fits well with you.

51m0h-broal

Blurb:

Meretessa Brexiano believes in love. Her heart yearns for a true bond with the man she weds. She also believes she can change her fate. Refusing the marriage her father has arranged, she strikes a bargain with a man she hopes can teach her the art of seduction. Nicolo da Parma is a businessman with a reputation as a connoisseur of women. Their sensuality is the palette he has painted on since his youth. This time, however, he may have struck a bargain which costs more than he planned. Training Tessa might be the greatest challenge to his own heart Nicolo’s ever had.

Excerpt:

Nicolo reached a hand toward her. “Seduction is a slow process, Tessa, a process which begins with you. It begins in here.” He tapped her forehead. “Do you even know what your own body looks like?”

She moved, grateful for even a small space between them. “That’s ridiculous! Of course I know what I look like. I see myself every day.”

“Ah, but do you really see? How can you tempt a lover with a body you are not even aware of?”

Before she could protest, he swallowed up the small, safe distance. Strange sensations stirred within her, leaving her without the ability to form the words she knew she should be saying. Nicolo’s fingers untied the lace along her bodice. He slipped the thin scarf through his hand with a sensual caress that made her shiver. What would those fingers feel like against her skin? As his hand slid over her shoulder, his fingers nudged her dress down, letting the fabric glide to the top of her breasts. He leaned in close and for a moment she thought he might kiss her. Tessa wondered what his lips would feel like, what they would taste like.

Author Kayden Claremont – New Release: – Why She Loves Kilts

Please help me welcome fellow Authors Helping Authors member, Kayden Claremont, sharing her ‘hot’ new release!

I love a man in a Kilt, I mean—who doesn’t.

When The Wild Rose Press asked for stories for their Real Men Wear Kilts series I was in heaven. I went through the usual list of placed you’d find a kilt-wearing hunk, but decided to have Brodie Murdock wear his kilt every day. After all, it would be such a pity to save all the scrumptiousness just for special occasions.

Since I write paranormal erotic romance, I had to come up with his paranormal quality. I made Brodie Murdock a kilt-wearing, motorcycle-riding hottie with a secret he can only share with his destined mate.

Brodie took over the story so I had to make sure Cora Siegfried was he match in every way. She became a kick-ass heroine who wouldn’t back down from fighting for the man she loves.

With his throne on the line, Brodie Murdock needs to secure his kingdom by taking a bride. When the only woman he’s ever wanted, Cora Siegfried, steps right into his path, he knows the legends are true. She is his destiny. But will she agree?

Blurb: Financial planner Cora Siegfried has returned to her hometown to settle her late father’s estate. Get in, get out, that’s the plan. When she’s almost run over by a kilt-wearing hottie on a motorcycle, all her well-laid plans go up in smoke, and all she can think about is getting well laid by her childhood crush. But after what she hoped would be a one-night stand, leaving him might not be as easy. Talk about a tartan temptation.

With his throne on the line, Brodie Murdock needs to secure his kingdom by taking a bride. When the only woman he’s ever wanted steps right into his path, he knows the legends are true. She is his destiny. The feisty female isn’t hard to seduce into his bed for the night, but she’s proving difficult to convince they are meant for forever. And then there’s the secret that could destroy any chance of their future–a secret he’s not ready to confess. Not until his stubborn soul mate admits she needs him for more than sex.

Snippet:

She rubbed her brow. That’s what she did when she was gathering her thoughts. “I can’t list the house without a stupid piece of paper from the lawyer, and he had to go away on a family emergency. What about my family emergency? My father died. Nobody cares about that.”

Brodie turned the bike off, set it on its kickstand, and stood. He shouldn’t touch her, but he wrapped his arms around her and drew her against him. “I care.”

Doubt filled her dark blue eyes. “Why? Why do you care about me?”

Destiny. She’d think he was crazy, but it was the truth. He’d always understood it. “How could I not care about you?”

Taking a step back, she shook her head. The startled expression on her face told him he’d gone too far.

She hesitated then glared at him. “What do you want?”

He glanced up at the stormy cloud, then back at her. He hadn’t fooled her at all. He was running out of time. He had to win her trust now. “Ice cream. I need ice cream. You need ice cream. We all need ice cream.” He smiled, hoping his charm worked this time.

Disbelief shone in her eyes. “Now?”

Annie’s Heart was the result of a dream I had about living on the Kansas plains after the Civil War ended. I researched the area and found the hardships settlers faced to be overwhelming. I was surprised so many not only survived, but thrived. Annie is a strong woman with too many problems, but she is a survivor.

I hope you take this opportunity to read about her.

Blurb:

Only two coins and a gold pendant heart separate widowed ANNIE MOSS from disaster. The fields need to be plowed, the barn repaired and food stored for the winter, but she is alone and afraid. Her dream of a home for her children hangs from the promise of a wandering man to keep moving on, a man she has no reason to trust.

TRACE RANDOLPH has lost everything except his honor, so when a desperate ANNIE saves his life he knows he must pay his debt, even if it means marrying her. The only promise he makes is to leave before the winter snows. A promise he finds impossible to keep.

Excerpt:

Trace wiped his forehead with the back of his hand and hefted another bundle of shingles onto his shoulder. The sweat dripped off him and he knew he smelled like an old goat. He wondered if Annie had noticed, or if he were the only one suffering from this itch. His mouth was parched and he made a note to purchase more mints when he visited town. A blister burned on his heel. And work shoes. His high-heeled boots weren’t designed for doing farm chores.

He planned on taking a quick dip in the creek later to wash away his ripe odor. The scent of lavender, light and delicate as the woman herself, filled his head. Annie stood behind him. He turned. She smiled and held out a dripping glass of water. Nodding his thanks, he swallowed the drink with pleasure. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and her blue eyes flicked from his fingers to his mouth.

“When do you expect to be done?”

A longing to touch her seared him like a hot poker. Trace jerked his gaze from her mouth to eye the rising sun and gathering clouds. He gauged the daylight hours left.

“Maybe by tonight. It looks like rain, and I hope to have it completed so you won’t be inconvenienced again.”

Her fingers trembled slightly when she held out her hand for the empty glass. His gaze darted to her face. She blushed at his bold stare and stepped back.

“I’m sure I never implied–”

“No, you didn’t, but I have eyes in my head. You need your privacy. I intend to get Digger’s bunk ready as well as my own.”

She blushed a color reminiscent of the climbing roses in his mother’s garden. He realized she was embarrassed by his reference to sleeping arrangements. He was enchanted by her sweet reaction. A woman so innocent shouldn’t be the mother of two children.

Her gaze dropped to the ground as she hugged the glass to her breasts. The dripping condensation soaked into the fabric. She didn’t notice the wet material clinging to her soft outline, but he did. Heat pulsed low in his groin. He longed to trace the outline of dampness with his mouth.

“I need to go into town. Would you like to come?” Trace didn’t know where the suggestion sprang from, but Annie’s eyes sparkled with anticipation, then dimmed.

“But we have chores to…”

“Let Digger do them,” he interrupted.

She hesitated. Cackling laughter followed by a whoop of excitement broke the silence stretching between them. Annie gave him a shaky nod before heading back toward the house.

Trace cursed under his breath as he watched the sweet sway of her hips when she climbed the shallow steps to the porch. Annie was soft and curvy in all the right places. She cast him a quick glance before darting inside.

Immortal Winter, a stand-alone dystopian paranormal romance
by New York Times bestselling authors N.R. Larry and Margo Bond Collins

02055-amazon2b252812529

Excerpt:

I woke in my ice tower, covered in a coating of sweat, lying next to a dead body.

With a gasp, I scrambled back against the headboard of my own bed. Other than the motionless figure beside me, nothing around me had changed, though it was tinted yellow from the flickering lanterns.

Arina’s dead body?

I’d never seen a corpse. Not a real one. I eyed the spike sticking out of her forehead and the odd snarl twisting her open mouth. My head swam and I swallowed convulsively.

I knew I needed to act, but all I could manage to do was let Arina continue to bleed out—onto the sheets and onto me. I should have been screaming. I should have been throwing myself off the bed and toward the window. But I didn’t, anchored in place by fire and sweat and blood.

I tried to connect the scene in front of me to some memory, something that swam barely out of reach. I stretched after it, catching a fragment: yesterday was Arina’s day. The day I wouldn’t be alone.

A pain day.

I looked forward to those. That much I knew.

Forcing myself to sit up, I scooted away from her still form, my jaw clenched with the memory of pain. I would have laughed at what lingered but there was a body to attend to. Stumbling out of bed, I stepped out of my clothes and limped toward my ivory dresser. On the way, my feet grazed against something rough. Some imperfection in the ice. Something that wasn’t there before.

I backed up and stared down at the message scratched into the ice, blood swiped across it to highlight the letters, like ink rubbed on a seal impression to darken the image.

She found me. She knows. Went to warn them. Don’t take the infusions. Watch out for Kip.

My body began to tremble, even before my mind caught up.

Yesterday.

Author Interview with A.K. Smith – New Release: A Deep Thing

I am thrilled to introduce today’s guest, A.K. Smith. I had the pleasure of meeting her in Vegas at a conference where she pitched her story to me. She sent it to me at The Wild Rose Press, and we contracted it. Now, it’s finally released! It’s a fantastic story filled with intrigue and emotion. Please help me welcome A.K., who is going to tell us a little about herself…

Why did you choose this genre?

My first Dean Koontz book was Whispers, (the last novel he wrote on a typewriter). I was around fourteen, and I remember thinking I was reading a racy, thrilling, exciting adult novel. The pace of the book captivated me and the surprise ending fascinated me. I then went on to devour Stephen King, James Patterson, and John Grisham novels. The suspense kept me turning the pages, and I fell in love with stories that surprised me and could keep me up at night. The “What if’s,” fascinated me and in my writing, I wanted twists and turns. I love being surprised—but, I also love a happy ending.

Where did you get the idea for A Deep Thing?

My husband and I took a romantic vacation to the Mexican Rivera Maya, and we discovered cenotes. Cenotes are deep iridescent underwater caves with fresh water. Outside Puerto Morelos, Mexico there is a road called “Route de Cenotes” we hired a taxi driver to take us to see a cenote. We drove back uncommercialized dirt roads, and in the middle of the jungle he let us out, and we walked back a jungle road to a beautiful hole in the ground. The water luminescent, we were in awe of our surroundings. You can dive, snorkel and swim in these wonders of nature, and the setting was surreal. When we returned home, I couldn’t stop thinking about the cenotes. Why had I never heard of them? Why were they so secret and on private land? What if? We returned to the Rivera Maya before the final draft of my novel and dove the cenotes in Tulum. It was an incredible experience.  My novel was born in the Yucatan.

What do you want readers to come away with after they read, A Deep Thing?

When they close the book or read the last page– I want their mind to be racing. The question in their mind, What if?

What is your favorite quote?

I love quotes, and there are so many epic ones, but “What would you attempt to do if you knew you would not fail?” motivates me.

If stranded on a desert island and you could have three (inanimate) objects, what would they be?

I love this question because of the What if’s. My practical side would choose a swiss army knife (you can do everything with that), my iPhone and a solar charger. I have an off- the grid cabin and my iphone charges with a simple solar charger and last for eight hours. Then I would have all my kindle books, the bible, movies, music, even a compass, and flashlight app. Come to think of it; I better download a survival guide.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on a desert island with?

Hmmm.  My husband is not a celebrity, so I can’t choose him. So, who could I put up with? I’m not a huge Keith Urban Fan; I like his music, but he seems like a down-to-earth nice guy, definitely not bad to look at and he appears even-tempered. I think he would do, at least if nothing else, we could sing together. If he’s not available, I choose the best looking, even tempered, reality survivor guy.

Authors Nicole Fitton & Forbidden Colors

Please help me welcome today’s guest, fellow AHA (Authors Helping Authors), Nicole Fitton:

Forbidden Colours was the evolution of a question that had been rattling around in my brain. You know, those annoying questions that wake you at 4am and won’t let you rest until you’ve written something. Well, that’s how it was for me. I had read a newspaper article about the complexity of the human brain and well, it all started from there. Forbidden Colours is a gripping love story which contains elements of psychological suspense. It contains enough adrenaline fuelled drama to power the national grid! Once I had the protagonist Midori Yates firmly fixed in my mind’s eye she took charge and dictated the direction of travel. I have a passion for science and being able to incorporate that into a book is very exciting. The story centres around a new drug being brought to market that does not quite do what it is supposed to…. I shall leave it at that. As I said earlier I started Forbidden Colours with a question and everything flowed from there. So, I know you want to know, what was the question? It’s a question I often ask myself but seldom has it led me in such an unusual direction…… ‘ What if?’

Blurb:

What if your memories were not your memories? What if the drug hailed as a cure became a curse and ultimately your destruction?

Midori Yates works for pharmaceutical giant KLD. The launch of new drug Centoria has revolutionised the treatment of amnesia, with outstanding results. Trials exploring its use in the treatment of Alzheimer’s are on the horizon. But is it really as good as the data suggests?

Neurologist Dr. Nick Campbell has seen amazing results with his patients and is ready to believe in Centoria’s transformational abilities…that is until his patients start displaying strange and worrying symptoms with drastic results. Determined to uncover the truth, Midori and Nick find a conspiracy that is to have devastating consequences for both of them. A dark world threatens to engulf them. Can they survive?

Snippet:

Katzuko Yates eyed her daughter thoughtfully. A sense of apprehension gripped her. Those years in Japan were long ago; she wondered if she could be clear with her explanation. Even though buried, her memories continued to breathe under the mountain of life she’d lived. Dare she even speak of them? Could she speak of them? Their place of residence had become an unmarked grave in her history. Her family had a right to know, after everything that had happened. His world was dark and full of shadows; where would she begin? For over 25 years she had told no one. Now she was being drawn back into his world. It was a time she wanted to forget. The tie that had been bound to her so tightly was about to be broken.
