Ramblings of a Lifelong Fan – Part 44 – Million Dollar Quartet Musical Stage Production

My condolences to the family of B.B. King, who passed away last night at 89 years old. B.B. was a supremely talented singer and musician, and a wonderful person with a big heart. B.B. and Elvis had a great deal of respect for one another. I’d like to believe they are singing together in Heaven today.

Million Dollar Quartet:

On December 4, 1956, Carl Perkins, who had already had a hit with Blue Suede Shoes, was in Sun Studios for a recording session…

Sam Phillips, the owner of the studio who discovered Elvis, had brought in Jerry Lee Lewis, a talented but barely known singer and piano player. Johnny Cash stopped by, as did Elvis, with his girlfriend, Marilyn Evans, whom Elvis had met in Vegas where she was dancing in the chorus line at the Frontier. Elvis was now with RCA, but he loved Sun Records and Sun, and missed recording there. The four soon-to-be legendary stars launched into a jam session, and Jack Clement, an engineer with Sun, recorded it. A Memphis newspaper wrote an article about the session the next day and titled it “Million Dollar Quartet.” The article carried the below picture. The now famous version has Marilyn cropped out:

million-dollar-quartet-cropped-2

I was fortunate to have the opportunity attend the musical portrayal of this historic event with my friends, Kathy L Wheeler, Krysta Scott, her daughter Taylor, and my sister, Christi Perryman last Friday night at The Civic Center in Oklahoma City. (Coincidentally, I ran into my daughter, Lana Clary, and her friend, Sara Kitchell, at the play. Lana claims she told me months earlier that she was going, but I don’t believe her. I wouldn’t have forgotten something like that…would I?) 🙂

The show was phenomenal! It was much better than I expected, although I did expect to like it. Not only was it funny…Jerry Lee was quite a character…the music was incredible. I was blown away by the talent of the four actors; Jacob Rowley as Elvis, Gabe Bowling as Carl Perkins, Scott Moreau as Johnny Cash, and Colte Julian (a graduate of Oklahoma State University who grew up in Fletcher, Oklahoma) as Jerry Lee Lewis. Not only did they play their parts to near perfection, they did their own singing and actually played the instruments. It was amazing, seriously amazing. Bryan Langlitz as Sam Phillips did an excellent job as well.

Check out the trailer (this is not with the cast I saw. I believe it is the original New York cast):

As everyone who knows me probably knows, I do not like Elvis impersonators, but this was different. This was a young, talented actor portraying Elvis. And Jacob did a marvelous job. He didn’t sound ‘just like Elvis’ but his singing was great, and when he did a beautiful rendition of Peace in the Valley, he sounded similar to Elvis. One thing I will say, he had Elvis’ 50’s moves down. His dancing was adorable and so exciting to watch.

Elvis DL IMG_9003 (2)

Colte as Jerry Lee was hilarious and supremely talented. The way he beat the hell out of the piano, kicked over his stool, and generally Jerry Lee’d it up, was one of the highlights of the show. Scott and Gabe, who played Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins respectively, were excellent as well. I had to laugh when Carl whined about Elvis stealing his song and people thinking “Blue Suede Shoes” was Elvis’ song. 🙂 I loved the glimpses into the realism of their history. For the female part, I believe for legal reasons of some kind, they used a character named Dyanne to represent Elvis’ girlfriend. The actress, Laura Obenauf, was talented as well and sang a few songs too, although I don’t believe Marilyn actually sang in the session.

million 1

The show provided a little snippet of how each of the four came to be with Sam Phillips, which I loved. The end was a dazzling, rocking, spectacular performance where the four actors donned glitzy jackets and sang and played their hearts out. By the end of the production, my sister and I were in tears. It was so much fun, so moving and so poignant at the same time.  SPOILER ALERT: Toward the end, Sam grabs his camera and says he wants to get a picture of ‘his boys’ and tells them to gather around the piano. He said something to the effect of  “This would be the first time and the last time these guys played together…I just wish they could have lived happier lives.” The actors were all in the pose of the original MDQ photo. The stage went dark and bright white camera flashes went off. Lights came back on and suspended above the stage was the actual famous MDQ photo while the original 1956 recording of them singing “Down by the Riverside” plays. They were all so young and talented and full of dreams. Elvis’ beautiful face held so much happiness and hope. It was very emotional.

Immediately when it was over, myself, my sister, my daughter and her friend all wanted to watch it again. It was that good. If you get a chance, do yourself a favor and go see the show. You won’t regret it.

Ramblings of a Lifelong Fan – Part 43 – The Movies 12-13 (1963) – It Happened at the World’s Fair and Fun in Acapulco

I have seen all of Elvis’ movies over the years, multiple times, but I am watching them again (I have them all on DVD) and blog about them from time to time. I am up to Elvis’ 12th and 13th movies.

It Happened at the World’s Fair

11 world fair girl romance

I like this movie more than I remembered liking it. I’d always counted it as one of my lesser favorites, but it was actually wonderful. Very sweet, some funny moments, great songs. What’s not to love? And, oh yeah, ELVIS!!

About: Elvis plays Mike Edwards, a playboy crop duster pilot whose partner has a gambling problem and causes them to lose their airplane. They head to Seattle, where Elvis’ friend ‘knows a guy.’ They meet up with an adorable Chinese girl and her grandfather, who are on their way to Seattle for the World Fair, and they give Elvis and his friend a ride. Upon arrival, the grandfather is called to work, and he convinces Elvis to take the little girl to the fair. Throughout the day, he and the child bond, and he meets and falls for a beautiful nurse.  Elvis runs across the little girl later, crying. He learns that her grandfather has gone missing. Elvis takes her home to care for her. Cuteness and music and misunderstandings and romance ensue. In the end, grandfather is found, Elvis gets the girl.

Side notes: Kurt Russell made his movie debut in an uncredited role, playing a boy at the Fair who Elvis pays a quarter to kick him in the shin so he’ll have an excuse to go see the pretty nurse again. Kurt would later play Elvis in a tv movie.

11 kurt world fair

I was curious about the little girl, because she looked a lot like the little girl from Girls, Girls, Girls. Also, she was adorable. And, Elvis (in the movie) was so sweet to her, their scenes were heartwarming.

1 world fair11 world fair

I researched and learned that her name is Vicky Tiu (who later became the First Lady of Hawaii :)). She was the sister of the little girl in Girls, Girls, Girls, who was first picked to play in this movie, but was unavailable because she was playing piano for President Kennedy at the White House (two of her other siblings also appeared in Girls, Girls, Girls) Vicky was only 6 1/2 at the time, it was the only movie she would ever make, and she was incredibly homesick. She told about a time when she was having trouble nailing a scene. They’d done about 30 takes, and she was crying, and the director was getting frustrated. Elvis stepped in and said, “That’s it, it’s a wrap. The little lady and I are going to have something to eat.” He took her to dinner that evening, and the next day, she nailed the scene. How precious is that? A huge superstar like him doing something like that? He was indeed a very special man.

My favorite songs from the movie: Relax, One Broken Heart for Sale or They Remind Me Too Much of You

Favorite scenes:

I don’t know that I had a particular favorite scene, but there were lots of favorite moments. Early in the movie, Elvis was putting the moves on a girl (Yvonne Craig who played Batgirl on the Batman TV show and would be Elvis’ love interest in Kissin’ Cousins), and she was resisting (yeah, right!), and her parents came home, her dad chased him with a shotgun, etc. That scene had some funny moments. Something that occurred to me, though, was how Elvis had this sizzling charisma with literally every woman he did a scene with. You could actually feel it oozing from the screen.

The movie had some funny one-liners. In one scene with Elvis, the little girl, and his love interest, Elvis makes some kind of joke, and the little girls asks  him a question about it, and the nurse says, “No, dear, he was merely being funny.” Elvis says, “Did you say merely or nearly?”

When he first meets the nurse, he is being a ‘wolf’ and making advances. She tries to kick him out of the exam room, but he won’t leave. She says, “Do you want me to to call the guard?” He says, “I like it better with just the two of us.”

The scenes with Kurt Russell are also sooo cute. When Elvis first comes across him and asks him to kick him in the shin, Kurt says, “Are you drunk, Mister?” Later, after Elvis has reeled the nurse in and she’s falling for him, they run into Kurt again. He says, “Hey, Mister, want me to kick you in the shin again?” Elvis knows he’ll be busted, since the nurse is right there with him. He is trying to shoo Kurt away and be discreet. He says he’s never seen the kid before, and finally, says “Here’s 50 cents, go away.” Kurt says, “Thanks, Mister!” And kicks him in the (very sore) shin again. PLUS, the girls is onto him and angrily storms away.

Fun in Acapulco

fun in

I’m afraid I would have to classify this as one of my lesser favorites. While I did enjoy watching it again, it wasn’t one that surprised me by being better than I remembered. It was about the same as I remembered. However, I will have to say that I have a different appreciation for the many shots of a shirtless Elvis. 🙂

fun shirtles

About: Elvis plays Mike Windgren, who is fired, because of a girl, from his job on a boat. He runs into a little boy, who insists on becoming Elvis’ manager, and gets him singing gigs. The gorgeous Ursula Andress plays his love interest. Elvis is afraid of heights, due to a tragedy in his past. He was part of a family circus act, and he dropped his brother on the high wire, causing his death. Elvis ends up overcoming his fear, and getting the girl.

Side notes: None of the scenes were actually filmed in Mexico. Teri Garr has an uncredited part as a dancer. She was an uncredited dancer in seven of his movies.

My favorite song from the movie: Bossa Nova (I’ve gained a new appreciation for this song, and especially love that it’s in a Heineken commercial)

Favorite scenes:

I mostly had some favorite ‘moments.’ The scene where the little boy is on the phone, wheeling and dealing, and Elvis is sitting on the bed, watching. He’s wearing blue pajamas that bring out the gorgeous color of his eyes.

fun

And, when Elvis comes out of the pool, wet, wearing a black bathing suit.

Elvis-and-Ursula-Poolside-in-Fun-in-Acapulco

Also, the obligatory fight scenes, which I always love. In this one, Elvis does this cute little movement with his shoulder. He had some signature gestures in many of his movies, that you can see if you watch closely (which, of course, I do), and this is one of them. Loved it! (Yes, I know it’s minor, but it’s ELVIS!) – Check it out:

See what I mean? 🙂

Thank you for joining me. Have you seen these movies? What did you think?

Ramblings of a Lifelong Elvis Fan – Part 42 – My Experience at ‘The Elvis Experience’ in Las Vegas

I  was in Vegas last weekend for a writer’s conference, and it happened to be the weekend of the opening for The Elvis Experience, a new venture between Westgate Hotels and Graceland Enterprises. The project includes a live production and an Elvis exhibit. I did not attend the live production. I was free to go on a Sunday, and there are no shows on Sundays. Also, even though I’m sure it’s spectacular, I’m not sure I care to see someone recreate Elvis’ phenomenal run in Las Vegas. As always, if I can’t have the real thing, I’m not all that interested.

The exhibit was fabulous. The people who work there were friendly and informative, and didn’t make fun of me when I got a little emotional. 🙂 One girl in particular, Chloe, was very sweet. She was probably 19 or 20, but she discovered an appreciation for Elvis while taking a music course in college. She was kind enough to listen to me ramble on about what Elvis means to me and pretended to be interested. 🙂

There is something surreal and awe-inspiring about being surrounded by things Elvis owned, things he wore, things he drove, and even some notes written in his own hand. Not to mention the larger than life photos lining the walls. And, to top it all off, Elvis music and concert clips are playing throughout. The exhibit also includes a thirty minute film showing concert clips and snippets of interviews—an excellent way to end the tour and a definite heart string puller.

I’ll share the remainder of my experience in photos…

Elvis Presley – Ramblings from a Lifelong Fan, Part 1-Reposting

Hi all, I am away at a conference in Vegas, so I am reposting my first weekly Elvis blog post. I will have a new post up next Friday. Have a great weekend!

Alicia Dean's avatarAuthor Alicia Dean

Elvis Presley has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I have always loved him—I don’t even recall the first time I discovered him. It just seems as though he was always there. My sister, Ruth, however, does remember when she discovered him, and I’m a little jealous of that memory, since I don’t have my own. (Nor do I remember the incident, so I’m telling her version, which is very short :)). She was five and I was seven (but, it’s really odd how, all these years later, she’s somehow older than me…hmmm…) 😉 Anyway, I digress. She said that I called her into the living room where Elvis’s movie, Harum Scarum, was playing (on our black and white television. This was around 1967, but we didn’t yet have a color tv), and I pointed Elvis out to her and said, “Look, isn’t he…

Ramblings of a Lifelong Elvis Fan – Part 41 – Elvis’ Tells His Side plus Fun Facts

I ran across this awesome recording from a concert in August of ’69. Not only is it interesting to hear Elvis’ version of some of the events in his career, he is funny and charming as he tells it. Check it out:

And… Did You Know…

After Elvis commemorative stamps were released (January 8, 1993), fans put them on envelopes and purposely sent them to bogus addresses, so they could have the envelope returned with “Return to Sender” and an Elvis stamp. I didn’t get in on that trend, but I do have a few sheets of those stamps. 🙂

6/30/00 DS - REF="Elvis_ao_MCos.psd"

When Elvis was just a teenager, he heard the gospel group, the Jordanaires, and became a fan. He once told them, “If I ever get a contract with a major company, I want you guys to back me up.” According to Gordon Stoker, of the Jordanaires, when Elvis began recording for RCA in January 1956, he requested them as backup vocalists, but Chet Atkins, who was producing the record, told Gordon that this ‘new-probably-wouldn’t-be-around-long kid, named Elvis Presley’ wanted the Jordanaires, but since this kid was just a ‘flash in the pan,’ he told Gordon to take Ben and Brock Speer. Elvis was not pleased, and at a later recording session, once more insisted he wanted all of the Jordanaires. This time, his request was granted and the Jordanaires did back up for Elvis for the next 14 years, until he went to Vegas, where he was doing two shows a night. The schedule was too heavy for them, and they stopped touring with Elvis.

Elvis and Jordanaires

Elvis and the Jordanaires in the movie, Loving You.

(Side note: Elvis hated to wear jeans, because they reminded him of when he was poor, so about the only time he wore them was for movie roles)

Red West, Elvis’ ‘friend’ and part of the Memphis Mafia wrote several songs that Elvis recorded, among them, “Separate Ways.” Many people thought Red wrote it about Elvis’ and Priscilla’s split, but he actually wrote it about his separation with his own wife. Elvis changed the words (which were about Red’s son, Ben) from ‘the tears that he will cry’ into ‘the tears that she will cry’ to fit Lisa Marie.

1956_june_14_red_elvis

Elvis and Red at Elvis’ 1034 Audubon Drive House : June 14, 1956.

Elvis wanted the intro to “Guitar Man” to sound like it did when Jerry Reed played it, and the only way to make that happen was to get Jerry himself. Jerry was fishing on the Cumberland River when he got the call from Felton Jarvis that Elvis wanted him to play on the record. He quickly agreed and headed to the studio in Nashville. Jerry was very anxious. He sat down to play, and Elvis said, “Just do those licks for me like you did on your original version.” Jerry made about three or four attempts and kept making mistakes. Finally, he looked up at Elvis and said, “God, you’re handsome!” Elvis thought it was funny that Jerry was so flustered, he was nervous as well.

Next week I am going to Vegas to present workshops at a writer’s conference. As it happens, that is the weekend a new venture: “Graceland Presents ELVIS: The Exhibition – The Show – The Experience” opens in Vegas, and I have a ticket to the exhibit, not the show, but the exhibit is the main thing I’m interested in. Check out details here:

EOLS Charity

Elvis was known for his giving heart and charitable work during his lifetime. Lisa Marie and Elvis Presley Enterprises have continued that tradition with their involvement in various charities. In 1984, The Elvis Charitable Foundation was formed. The EPCF created a scholarship fund for students majoring in the arts. The charity also contributes to one of Elvis’ favorite charities, Goodwill Homes, a Memphis facility that provides counseling and services for abused children and their families. The EPCF also assists numerous other charities, especially focusing on arts, education and children’s programs.

Please help welcome my guest, P.J. MacLayne:

It’s finally here!  The second book in the Oak Grove Mysteries series, Her Ladyship’s Ring, is available now at major ebook retailers.

Ladysring_4-15

Blurb

Harmony Duprie is back, and so is trouble in Oak Grove.

When a man is murdered in the back yard of the old Victorian house she is remodeling, Harmony is determined to locate his next-of-kin so he can be put to rest properly. But with her ex-boyfriend Jake out of prison, back in town and one of the suspects in the murder, she takes on the challenge of solving the crime.

With Eli, her current love interest, in Florida and Jake close by, old emotions come back to haunt her. Can Harmony clear Jake’s name and solve the mystery of her own heart?

Although each book in the series is a complete mystery, (no cliffhangers) it is recommended that the books be read in order. The first book, the Marquesa’s Necklace, is currently on sale for 99¢

Excerpt

Almost cheerful after talking to Eli, I headed home. My stomach growled as I unlocked the door to my apartment and pushed it open, reminding me the only thing I’d eaten at the Flamingo were peanuts. The package of frozen lasagna thawing in the fridge awaited me. Although leftover lasagna always tasted better when I rewarmed it in the oven, the microwave would have to do for once.

After flipping on the light, tossing my purse on the easy chair and hanging my coat on the coat tree, I headed towards the kitchen. As I filled a glass with water from the pitcher I kept in the refrigerator, I hesitated. Where did the package of lasagna go? I was sure I’d put it on the second shelf, right under the water.

“I must be losing my ‘friggin mind,” I muttered and set the glass on the cupboard to free my hands. Either that, or I was still asleep and dreamed the whole thing. Not like I believed either one. Still, I moved aside everything from the front of the shelves and opened every drawer, and didn’t find what I was looking for. I did find an out-of-date yogurt container, which I promptly tossed in the garbage, but no lasagna.

Puzzled, I opened up the freezer. Maybe it had been just my imagination. But no, there was an empty spot right where the package had been.

I considered the mystery as I warmed up a can of tomato soup, even checking the garbage to make sure I hadn’t accidentally put the lasagna there. Sitting on top of the cereal box I’d emptied at breakfast, I spotted the balled up foil, all that remained of my lasagna.

While my soup cooled off, I rushed through the apartment, looking for something, anything, out of place or missing. I should have called 911 but experience told me they would find nothing. I certainly did. Even the ring was untouched and it was in plain view on my dresser.

Although I wasn’t hungry anymore, I couldn’t waste the soup. After reheating it, I sat at my kitchen table and ate the soup straight from the pot. No sense in dirtying another dish. Whoever had been inconsiderate enough to eat my supper had been considerate enough to wash their own dishes. The contradiction puzzled and annoyed me.

A Visit to Eischen’s for Chicken, Okra, and a History Lesson

Last Saturday, I took part in a book signing at the Anadarko Library. I met some new readers and had a blast! The people at the library were wonderful, especially my friend and fellow writer, Tamrie Foxtail, who put the whole thing together. She did a marvelous job, and I so appreciate her hard work.

Here are two of the readers we met, sisters Samantha and Montania (yes, that’s spelled correctly). They were so cute and so enthusiastic about reading. I thought it interesting that, even though they are quite young, they preferred print books over ebooks. Guess new technology isn’t always welcome. 🙂

I made the trip with my Martini Club 4 peeps, Amanda McCabe, Kathy L Wheeler, and Krysta Scott. On the way back, we drove to Okrache and had lunch at Eischen’s. It was wonderful! I’d been there a handful of times, it’s my son, Presley’s, favorite place to go, but I hadn’t been in ages. Amanda and Krysta had never been. In case you’re not familiar with Eischen’s, it was once featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. The bar opened in 1896 and is reputed to be the ‘oldest bar in Oklahoma’ although I was educated on the fact that it’s not actually the oldest bar. Blue Belle Saloon in Guthrie is three years older, but Eischen’s is the oldest bar that has stayed in business since it’s opening, other than briefly closing for prohibition in the early 1900’s and a fire in 1993, and is the only one still owned by the same family. Blue Belle has opened and closed over the years and changed ownership several times.

Our server, Ryan, was awesome. He took good care of us and was friendly and helpful. I asked him about the history of the bar, and since he didn’t know all the information, he brought over A.J., who was a wealth of information. (I most likely have some of the details wrong. I didn’t take notes, I was just soaking it all up in my over-worked pea brain :))

Ryan, our server, behind the bar of Eischen’s

Eischen’s is known for it’s yummy fried chicken and okra, and I was curious about how they came to serve these dishes. A.J. said it was the result of a shuffleboard contest in 1963. The winner would receive a chicken dinner (winner, winner, chicken dinner), and the owner and his friend (who had a part in running the bar), used the friend’s recipe and cooked the winner a chicken dinner. It was such a hit, that the owner purchased the recipe and has been serving it ever since. Okra was added some years later when farmers would bring it in and have the people in the bar sample it. The okra was a hit as well, and was added to the menu. Speaking of the menu, it’s very limited. They offer chili, roast beef sandwiches, nachos, frito chili pie, and barbecue sandwiches, in addition to the chicken and okra, but not much else. Then again, when you serve chicken and okra that tastes like that, you don’t need anything else.

A.J. is the bearded guy behind the register.

I was fascinated with A.J.’s telling of the history of the bar. He told of how they came to be closed on Sundays. Farmers would come to the bar on Thursdays and pretty much stay straight through until Monday. The wives converged on the owners and demanded they do something about it. They agreed to start closing on Sundays, so the farmers would go home. 🙂

In my Suspense/Thriller, Without Mercy, I set a scene in Eischen’s, when my hero goes to meet up with the bad guys. You can read the Eischen’s excerpt below…

Excerpt:

He arrived at Eischen’s in just under an hour. The hardwood floors were worn, and the walls held vintage beer signs. In a room at the back stood a few pool tables. To the right were tables surrounded by metal chairs. Plastic upholstered booths lined one wall. The place was crowded for a Monday night. What would it be like on the weekend?

Royce and Bishop sat at a table. Royce stood and waved Aiden over like an old friend anxious for a reunion.

Aiden squeezed past the bodies waiting to be seated and headed to the table.

“Sit.” Royce gestured to the chair across from him. “You remember Dan Bishop?”

“I do.” Aiden slid into a chair.

Bishop inclined his head in a nod, and Aiden returned it.

Royce twisted around and draped an arm over the back of his chair. “I took the liberty of ordering chicken, okra, and Budweiser. They’re world famous for their chicken. I haven’t tried it, but since it’s about the only thing on the menu, I figured I’d give it a shot. That okay with you?”

Aiden shrugged.

A thin, fifty-something waitress wearing jeans and a green Eischen’s T-shirt came over with three cans of Budweiser and sat them in the center of the table. “Chicken’ll be out in a minute, boys.”

Royce picked up a can and tipped it toward her. “Thank you, darlin’.”

He was rewarded with a wide smile before she moved on to another table.

Aiden shot a look around the dining room. The other customers were so close he could reach out and touch them. He leaned slightly toward Royce. “You really think this is the best place to conduct private business?”

“I think it’ll do just fine. The noise level will help drown out our conversation.”

“Sides,” Bishop cut in. “We had a taste for chicken. Folks around us are here for the same. Don’t give a hoot what we’re sayin’.”

Aiden spread his hands out in front of him on the scarred table. “So, what’s this all about? What do you want?”

“If you recall, we have a bit of unfinished business. A job about seven years ago where you never showed up at the rendezvous location to divvy up the payout.”

Aiden snorted a laugh. “That’s what this is all about? You think I ripped you off? I was in an explosion, ended up in the hospital. As soon as I came to, I went straight for the money. I was captured right after I collected. Arrested on some trumped up charge. The rebels took every bit of it.”

Royce shrugged. “Maybe. Maybe not. We think you might have it hidden somewhere. We know you were thrown in prison, but we got a feeling you hid the money first. Now me and Bishop here, we’re understanding fellas. We were willing to put it behind us. Then, I run into somebody who has it out for you. Hired us to get our own money back, how do you like that?” He chuckled. “Our boss expects a payout.”

Aiden’s gut roiled. These men were counting on money he didn’t have, and China and her kid’s lives were in danger if they didn’t get it. He had maybe five mil Wes’s accountant was holding, then if they’d give him time, he could do the job in Texas and get another mil. But the take from the job they’d done was fifteen. They wouldn’t be satisfied with a third of that.

“What makes your boss think it’ll do any good to use the woman and kid for leverage? Why would I care what happens to them?”

Royce grinned. “You’re in love with the Beckett woman.”

Stone’s chest tightened. “That’s a bunch of blarney.”

He raised his brows and smirked. “Right. That’s why you pined after her when you had to leave her behind to do the job in Tanier. Why you couldn’t wait to get back to her sweet little body.”

Anger simmered through Stone’s veins. Royce was just trying to get a rise out of him. He had to keep his cool. “You’ve got it all wrong.”

“Maybe. Boss man thinks you’re enough of a sap you won’t leave a woman and kid to fend for themselves, especially since the kid’s yours.”

Why did everyone keep saying that? Stone tried to keep his expression bland. “Kid ain’t mine. You gents are barking up the wrong Irishman. I don’t give two figs what happens to either of the females.”

Royce threw his head back and laughed. “Come on, Aiden. Even if you aren’t in love with her, and even if the kid’s not yours, you are not the kind of man who could walk away and leave them to die. Especially over something you started.”

Before he could respond, the waitress returned, her arms lined with food in paper containers. Efficiently, as if she’d done it thousands of times, she placed chicken, okra, bread, and a paper container of onions and pickles on the table, then laid a stack of wax paper squares down, which Aiden presumed were the plates.

“You boys ready for another beer?”

“You betcha. Thanks, sweetheart.”

This time a blush accompanied the smile. “Be back in a jif. You holler if you need anything else.”

After she disappeared, Royce and Bishop took turns picking out pieces of chicken and handfuls of okra, plopping them on the wax paper. Aiden’s stomach growled. The chicken smelled and looked delicious.

He helped himself to a leg and a handful of okra. The food was better than it looked. Who would have thought an old bar in nowhere Oklahoma would have the best fried chicken and okra he’d ever tasted? But then, to be fair, he could count on one hand the number of times he’d had fried chicken and okra.

“Damn, that’s good stuff,” Bishop said, licking his fingers. “They weren’t lyin.”

Royce nodded, picking up his can of beer and draining it as the waitress brought them a second round. When she left, he said, “So, am I right? You won’t leave China and Emma to die at our hands, now will you?”

Aiden pushed the chicken aside and picked up his beer, taking a long swallow from the can. They had him dead to rights. He wouldn’t let a stranger die because of something he’d done. Despite China’s betrayal, he damned sure couldn’t let her and her kid come to harm on his account.

Ramblings of a Lifelong Elvis Fan – Part 40 – Why Elvis is the King of Music

A poll to crown ‘King of Music’ is in the works, and I have been religiously reminding Elvis fans on Facebook to vote for him daily. When I first discovered the poll a few months back, Michael Jackson was ahead. Now, Elvis is ahead by over 15,000 votes. The voting goes until January, 2016, so lots of time left, but I can’t imagine that anyone besides Elvis will end up with the crown. Here is the link if you want to take a look and vote. (You can vote once every 24 hours)

http://thekingofmusic.com/

Of course, being a rabid Elvis fan for as long as I can remember, I am definitely biased as far as who should win King of Music. I’ve read comments on the website and people have posted stats and opinions and presented their own arguments for why their guy (mostly between Elvis and MJ), deserves to win. Everyone has their own opinion and tastes, and yes, statistics do back up an entertainer’s success. (However, I can’t imagine anyone attempting to pit another entertainer’s stats against Elvis’. No other singer has accomplished what he did, period.) Setting all of that aside, this contest is for the KING of MUSIC, correct? You would have to take into consideration which entertainer had the biggest impact on music, which one blazed a trail that earned him a ‘superior’ spot. And, when you take the word ‘music’ – surely a singer whose work spanned so many different categories embodies the very soul and definition of ‘music.’

EP 0dfa0dbd12732863a639882EP 620675e867e51535232bad3

Consider all of Elvis’ genres: (and I’ve provided an example of a song in each)

(Do yourself a favor and watch these videos…pure pleasure! Especially Lawdy Miss Clawdy and Just Pretend and Suspicious Minds…okay, okay, I love them all!)

Early rockabilly:  That’s All Right, Mama

Rock and Roll:  Hound Dog

Ballads: Until It’s Time for You to Go

Blues: Reconsider Baby

Soul: Lawdy, Miss Clawdy

Country: Just Pretend

Gospel: How Great Thou Art

Pop: Suspicious Minds

Then you have the songs that were just…Elvis. His movie songs, his covers, his rare recordings. No one can or will ever touch the magnitude of what Elvis has done for music. So, you can have your opinions and you can quote stats. But, there is only ONE King of Music…

Okay, I won’t keep you in suspense, it’s Elvis Presley!!! 😉

Who is YOUR King of Music? (I promise I won’t ban you if it’s not Elvis :))

Ramblings of a Lifelong Elvis Fan – Part 39 – Elvis’ TV Appearances – The Early Years

In the early days, Elvis made quite a few television appearances on various shows. His first was on the The Dorsey Brothers Stage Show in January of 1956 in New York. The first show didn’t have a large turnout. It was raining, and Elvis, at that time, was not all that well known. He appeared on the Dorsey Brothers show a total of five times.

On April 3, exactly 58 years ago today, Elvis made his first appearance on the Milton Berle show in San Diego, from the deck of the USS Hancock aircraft carrier. He also performed concerts the following two nights. The San Diego Chief of Police announced that if Elvis ever returned to his city and performed in that manner, he would be arrested for disorderly conduct. LOL. I bet the chief later came to regret his words.

The second time Elvis appeared on the Milton Berle show a few months later, he stirred up a ton of controversy. He received the famous nickname, Elvis the Pelvis, from the press, and his act was called a ‘striptease.’ Jack Gould of The New York Times wrote, ‘Mr. Presley has no discernible singing ability’. John Crosby of the New York Herald Tribune called Elvis ‘unspeakably untalented and vulgar’.

Ha! Little did they know…

milton5-web

On July 1, 1956 (my birthday, although I wasn’t born yet…that would happen 5 years later), Elvis appeared on The Steve Allen Show. In order to avoid controversy, Steve had Elvis wear a tux and sing Hound Dog to a basset hound. Fans were incensed, claiming Steve did it to embarrass Elvis and to insult rock and roll. After the show, Elvis was interviewed on Hy Gardner’s live TV interview show. Elvis said: ‘I don’t feel like I’m doing anything wrong.  I don’t see how any type of music would have any bad influence on people. How would rock ‘n’ roll music make anyone rebel against their parents?’

allen_Elvis--2

Ed Sullivan claimed he would never want Elvis on his show, but he changed his mind after learning that the night Elvis appeared on The Steve Allen Show, which was opposite his in the same time slot, Allen’s show brought in twice as many viewers. Elvis would appear on Sullivan’s show three times, September 9, 1956, October 28, 1956, and January 6, 1957.  His first show brought in 60 million viewers and gained the respect of many of his former critics.

Elvis, with the Jordanaires, sang ‘Peace in the Valley.’ I heard Gordon Stoker of the Jordanaires being interviewed on Elvis radio recently. He said that Elvis had promised his mother he would sing Peace in the Valley on the show. Sullivan’s producer wouldn’t allow it, he told Elvis there had never been a religious song sang on the show, and there never would be. Elvis went to Ed and told him he’d promised his mother he would sing the song, but that ‘fella’ said he couldn’t. Ed told his producer to ‘let the boy sing whatever he wants.’ 🙂

On Elvis’ final appearance, the censors would only allow him to be seen from the waist up. At the end of the show, Ed Sullivan said, ‘This is a read decent, fine boy. We’ve never had a pleasanter experience with a big name’.

ed_sullivan_elvis_presley

One of my favorites of Elvis’ early TV appearances was his spot on the Frank Sinatra Special after he returned from the Army.

sinatra_elvis_2 elvis_sinatra_show_238

Here is an adorable clip of Elvis and Frank singing a duet. The clip also includes some commentary from Nancy Sinatra: PLEASE, do yourself a favor and watch this.

Sigh…can you imagine being a teen in the 50’s and never having seen rock and roll of any kind, and then, being exposed to Elvis??? Wow…

Although, some of you WERE teens in the 50’s. I’d love to hear from you about what it was like. What did you think of Elvis? What did your parents think? Any memorable experiences you’d like to share?
