“10 Moments that Changed My Life” by Stacy Juba – PLUS, Fooling Around With Cinderella

Please welcome today’s guest, Stacy Juba. She’s sharing the moments that changed her life and her latest release, Fooling Around with Cinderella…

10 Moments That Changed My Life

  1. Receiving a telegram notifying me that I had won a competition and my young adult novel Face-Off would be published by a NY publisher. I was an 18-year-old college student. This success convinced me that I wanted to stick with writing, after a brief break from it.
  2. Accepting a job as editorial assistant at a newspaper where I soon met my future husband. (a sportswriter) One of my tasks was compiling 25 Years Ago Today items from the microfilm, which later inspired me to write my first mystery novel Twenty-Five Years Ago Today. This job also launched my reporting and freelance writing career.
  3. Going on the first date with my future husband. We went to see the movie Volcano and out to dinner, and talked until past 1 a.m.
  4. Saying yes when he proposed to me less than a year later on a trip to Disney World.
  5. The birth of my first child and becoming a mother. This was a huge, and wonderful, life change!
  6. The birth of my second child. Another wonderful moment!
  7. Receiving an offer for Twenty-Five Years Ago Today from Mainly Murder Press. This inspired me to launch a web site and jump full force into the publishing waters.
  8. Having my child diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 6. This changed the lives of everyone in our family, but we learned how strong we are.
  9. Getting a Dexcom continuous glucose monitor (CGM) which alarms for low and high blood sugars and shows whether blood sugar is steady or trending up or down. This was a diabetes game-changer – like flying with radar rather than flying blind.
  10. Going to a theme park and getting the idea for Fooling Around With Cinderella, and ultimately the Storybook Valley series. After years of writing mysteries and young adult, I branched out to chick lit and sweet romance.

Wow, interesting life you’ve led. I can’t imagine what it felt like to learn your child had such a disease. I love that you’ve written so many genres. I have never tried my hand at chick lit, but I think it would be fun. Thank you so much for sharing with us.

And now, check out Stacy’s book. Isn’t that cover fabulous? And, guess what? She’s giving away a free Smashwords or Audible copy of her mystery,  Sink or Swim. Winner will be drawn on December 12th. All you have to do to enter is answer this question from Stacy in the comments:

What is your favorite amusement park ride?

FoolingAroundWithCinderella600x900

Blurb – What happens when the glass slippers pinch Cinderella’s toes? When Jaine Andersen proposes a new marketing role to the local amusement park, general manager Dylan Callahan charms her into filling Cinderella’s glass slippers for the summer. Her reign transforms Jaine’s ordinary life into chaos that would bewilder a fairy godmother. Secretly dating her bad boy boss, running wedding errands for her ungrateful sisters, and defending herself from the park’s resident villain means Jaine needs lots more than a comfy pair of shoes to restore order in her kingdom. First in the Storybook Valley series, a blend of sweet romance, chick lit, and fairy tale fun.

Excerpt  – Jaine Andersen couldn’t stop staring at the framed poster of Cinderella outside the castle. Cylindrical towers and turrets ascended into the sapphire sky, lofty mountains rising in the background. Her hand poised in an elegant wave, Cinderella beamed toward the camera. Ornate script flowed across the right side of the glossy photograph.

“Follow your heart, dream big, and you will find the magic.”
“Okay, Jaine, time to find the magic,” she mumbled, shifting in her seat.
“Interesting. What magic are you hoping to find?” a masculine voice asked behind her.
The kind that erases someone’s memory and lets you start over? Nice going, Jaine.

Squirming, Jaine clutched the black leather portfolio case in her lap as Dylan Callahan closed his office door. He sat down at a battered desk strewn with papers, her eyes tracking his every movement. Forget Cinderella’s stirring quote. Now Jaine couldn’t tear her gaze off the hot guy conducting her interview. The blond hair ruffled across his forehead made him resemble a Venice Beach surfer, not the general manager of a family theme park.

Winter sports seemed his thing though, considering the posters flanking Cinderella. In one, a skier whipped down a powdery slope while the other showed a snowboarder in mid-air. Inspirational words stretched across the bottom of each print: Goal-Setting for the skier and Persistence for the snowboarder.

To nail this interview, Jaine needed to demonstrate her prowess in both areas. And show that she wasn’t some weirdo who talked to herself.

She recovered her voice. “Actually, I’m hoping to help your company find some marketing magic. Uh, thank you for inviting me in.” Jaine toed her navy blue dress shoes into the industrial carpet, hoping he didn’t notice her fidgeting. When the receptionist had escorted her into the office to wait, she hadn’t expected such a good-looking man to join her.

Focus, Jaine. Focus.

What the River Knows by Katherine Pritchett – Suspense Debut Novel from The Wild Rose Press

Blurb:

When a hometown girl is brutally murdered, Detective Scott Aylward vows to bring a killer to justice. His focus on the case further damages his failing marriage and reinforces the knowledge that he always fails those who matter most–his parents, his boss, his wife, but most of all the victims who expect him to bring them justice.

His search for the killer takes him back to his roots and crosses his path with the missing piece of the puzzle. When the shocking truth is finally revealed, he finds himself unarmed and face to face with the killer. This time, failing might cost him his life.

Excerpt:

He slowed his pace within twenty feet of a gray and twisted tree trunk that must have once supported a massive cottonwood, but now instead provided a windbreak that allowed sand to settle in its lee and let shrubs gain a foothold. He looked down the sloping bank of the dike toward the river, noting the lazy flow as it rippled barely a foot deep in half a dozen shallow braided channels within the banks. A gray heron took off from a sand bar, long legs dangling behind him.

He stopped and squatted to view the path from a different angle. Just this side of the tree trunk, he saw indistinct grooves in the sand of the path that could have been made by a body being dragged. Big bluestem waved behind the tree trunk, and a sand plum thicket guarded the north side of the approach. Buffalo grass carpeted the ground from the path to the tree, obscuring any sign from this angle. He stood up again.

Now it looked like there were faint marks in the grass, here and there, that could be drag marks. He continued on the other side of the path, careful not to disturb the sign. At last he was even with the northern edge of the sand plum thicket. Again, he went down to see what he could observe from this angle. He spotted some broken branches and a few tufts of buff fur, where the dog had bounded in to make his discovery and dragged the man in his wake. He followed the path of fur and branches with his eyes, and finally saw something large and too pale a pink to belong in that environment. Reminding himself to stay detached and professional, he stepped up on the tree trunk to get a better view.

And now, let’s get to know Katherine…

Where did you get the idea for What the River Knows?

This book was inspired by a murder nearly 40 years ago that is still unsolved. My suggestion about what might have happened and the character of the victim is purely my imagination, however.

Was there anything unusual, any anecdote about this book, the characters, title, process, etc, you’d like to share?

It just seemed to me that the river witnessed the crime. It knew; now if it would only tell.

What is the most difficult thing about writing a book?

Other than knowing when to stop editing and revising and consider it done, I find I hit a spot about 2/3 through when it’s time to up the ante and start the wrap up. Sometimes I find myself floundering here trying to find that exact point.

What was the most difficult thing about this one in particular?

I quit writing on this one for a long time, because it was taking me someplace dark. I worked on a romance and life seemed to be imitating art, as I fell in love. Then my love died of leukemia after we only had five months together, and I couldn’t write on the romance any more. Then, the dark place I was already in found an outlet in this book, and brought me back to the light.

Are there any tricks or habits you use when creating a story?

I use music to create a mood. Romantic ballads for a love scene, exciting music for chase scenes. Then I try to write as if an actor would have to convey all emotions without the narration. This makes it easier to show, don’t tell.

Do you have another occupation, other than writer? If so, what is it and how do you like it?

I work for a natural resource agency and have for 30 years. I love most of the work (get a bit frustrated with the red tape from time to time). The job has taken me from coast to coast and got me behind the scenes for experiences not available to the general public. The people I work with in my agency and others are passionate about what they do for the benefit of the public and the natural resources we protect.

What’s the main thing that you could get rid of in your life that would give you more writing time?

If I could just quit procrastinating, I would have so much more time for writing and everything else I need to do. However, sometimes the time I spend just sitting on my porch watching birds gives me insights I wouldn’t have if I were more efficient. I’ll quit procrastinating—someday.

What do you want readers to come away with after they read What the River Knows?

I hope the readers of any of my books come away with a greater understanding of how multi-dimensional human beings are. Good guys, bad guys, victims, bystanders, perpetrators: all have wants and needs and reasons for the things they do. When those reasons collide, we have conflict. Someday, maybe we’ll learn to avoid those collisions. We’ll learn to foster each other’s humanity.

What genre have you never written that you’d like to write?

Science fiction.

What is your favorite quote?

I don’t know who said it or if I made it up. You can’t choose the hand you’re dealt, but you can choose how you play it.

Thank you so much for joining me, Katherine. I enjoyed the interview and wish you the best!

Alexa Grace – Deadly Holiday

Alexa deadlyholiday_ebookcover200x300

Tantalizing Tidbit:

In Deadly Holiday, all of the characters from the previous three Deadly Series books play a role. The characters return to search for a lost boy, fight breast cancer, deal with the personal financial impact of a bad economy, and seek a Christmas miracle.

Favorite lines:

“He then tiptoed to the big rocking chair where he sat and gazed with wonder at the tiny baby kicking her legs beneath the pink blankets in the bassinet next to him. With his index finger outstretched, Shawn ever so slowly stroked the velvety soft skin of her arm, and then smiled with delight when her tiny hand clutched his finger and she cooed. She was named Mylee. Her middle name was Faith, because Mom said that faith was the only thing that got her through the days he was missing. She told him that faith would get them through all the days ahead.”

Favorite Christmas memory or tradition:

I’m from Indiana and one year we were snowed in for the holiday and it was great. My brother, sister, and I went sledding and then had hot cocoa in front of the best electric fireplace. One of my best holiday memories.

Ann Charles ~ The Old Man’s Back in Town

THeOldMansBackinTownCover

A sizzling, suspenseful SHORT STORY wrapped in a puzzling mystery that will leave you hungry for more.

Tantalizing Tidbit:

The story is set in the town of Goldwash, Nevada, which is a fictional town I created based on the real ghost town of Goldfield, Nevada.

Favorite lines:

“That woman was nuttier than a squirrel turd. Her leaving was my good fortune.”

“Well, well, well. Look what Santa brought you, Monty, a hunka-hunka burnin’ heartache. You must have been naughty this year.”

“Montana, think about what you’re up against. He’s twice your size, built up with years of prison bulk and revenge, and probably pissed as hell at the woman who helped put him behind bars.”

Favorite Christmas memory or tradition:

My favorite memory is making Buckeye candies (little peanut butter balls dipped in chocolate). I make them now with my kids, who eat one for every ten we dip, I swear. Ha!

Misty Evans and Adrienne Giordano ~ Holiday Justice

 christmasholidayjustice

When the wrong Santa comes down your chimney…

Tantalizing Tidbit:

Misty’s:

The story contains viewpoints from 4 of our characters. It was fun to revisit Grey, Sydney, Caroline and Mitch all over again!

Adrienne’s:

I can hit a bullseye from 220 yards with a .308 sniper rifle.

Favorite lines:

Misty’s:

A clang behind them made Mitch whirl, ready to jump on whoever was coming up the fire escape. A second later, Sydney’s head popped up over the roof edge.“What the hell are you two doing?”

And that’s when an idea—a terrible, awful idea—formed in Mitch’s head.

Adrienne’s:

His eyes narrowed, and even through the cold, she spotted the simmering heat that always charged her body, made her tingle with anticipation because their love of cupcakes didn’t necessarily include eating them. The things they did with cupcakes should, in fact, be illegal.

Favorite Christmas memory or tradition:

Misty’s:

Watching Christmas movies. I love all of them from White Christmas to The Grinch!

Adrienne’s:

Spending Christmas Eve with my extended family. We do a variation of the Feast of the Seven Fishes and I look forward to it every year.

Kim Hornsby ~ Christmas Interrupted (Dream Jumper Christmas)

Christmas Interruped FINAL

How well do you know your neighbors?

Tantalizing Tidbit:

Christmas Interrupted is a Stand Alone Novella but continues from the last Dream Jumper book (if you’ve read the series.) I did not give away much of anything so readers can go back to the first book, read the series and still enjoy all the twists and surprises in all three books. And I included a recipe for Christmas cookies!

Favorite lines:

“I heard the woman jumped off the widow’s walk to her death and soon after the husband and kids moved away.”

Favorite Christmas memory or tradition:

Christmas Caroling! I love to get a group of kids together to go door to door singing.

Jacki Delecki ~ Marriage Under Fire

JackiDelecki_MarriageUnderFire1400

A Christmas Wedding with the Grayce Walters Mystery Gang!

Tantalizing Tidbit:

The house where Maddy and Hunter are on a stake out is a friend’s house.

Favorite lines:

“No way would Maddy Jeffers admit, even under the threat of torture, that her killer shoes were killing her.”

He was a professional soldier, a top-notch intelligence officer, and the idea of a wife—not any wife, but Maddy—terrified him. This assignment made Belarus and Yemen seem like child’s play.

Favorite Christmas memory or tradition:

Singing Christmas Carols, baking Christmas cookies with my mom.

Lori Leger ~ Christmas 911

Lori Christmas 911 cover

Last minute Christmas shopping can be downright deadly!

Tantalizing Tidbit:

I, personally, have never had to call 911, or known anyone who’s been a 911 dispatcher, but I found plenty of information on different sites. The story takes place in Beaumont, TX, so I was able to pull up info from their area. My son-in-law is a cop, so he helped me out with the info for the weapons and ammo, and even whether or not a gunshot would shatter or fracture the door glass. I also had inside info from a dear friend who works at the courthouse in Beaumont to know at what point the bad guys could help a prisoner escape. She told me they had one prisoner appear at the courthouse and he nearly escaped by putting a ham sandwich between his skin and the ‘shock belt’ they place around their waist (like a taser) so that it didn’t shock him when he went to escape. He jumped down some stairs and hurt his leg, so they caught him.

Favorite lines:

(Scene set-up) 8 1/2 month pregnant Cori, is telling Luke, the 911 dispatcher, how her husband had left her for another woman because Cori couldn’t have children. Her husband wrapped his car around a tree while his girlfriend was giving him oral sex. “Yeah. Here’s a tad more irony for you. There he was, wanting to procreate, but his last DNA ends up . . . well, one can only assume where it ended up, I guess.”

Favorite Christmas memory or tradition:

I rent two cabins on a lake about an hour from our home and our family spends the weekend there, usually two weeks or so before Christmas. This will be the first time in seven years we don’t do that…and I’m kind of bummed about it. 😦

Alicia Dean ~ The Twelfth Day

TheTwelfthDayFINAL2015Final_resized (2)

Tantalizing Tidbit(s):

-I wrote this entire story in a weekend and revised it in a few days, along with working my day job and other projects.

-My ex-husband and son helped me with a research question.

-My model for the hero was James Marsden and for the heroine Kate Beckinsale.

-My heroine loves science and dislikes football, which is the exact opposite of me.

Favorite lines:

A ping sent icy chills over her skin. The familiar, terrifying music played and the words, On the eighth day of Christmas appeared. Along with an image of a figure—a young man, blank eyes staring at the ceiling—lying in a dim room.

Favorite Christmas memory or tradition:

I have lots of great memories from my childhood, but my favorite memory/tradition is with my own three children. Even though they are grown and don’t live with me, every year on Christmas Eve, the three of them spend the night with me and we wake up the next morning and open gifts and the stockings ‘Santa’ filled during the night. Even the three years I lived away in Kansas City, we managed to keep the tradition. I know that will end when they have families of their own, but in the meantime, I’ll just enjoy and appreciate it.

Amara Draska ~ The Way Evil Does

The Way Evil Does

A story about right, wrong, and what you can’t stop yourself from doing.

Tantalizing Tidbit:

My POV character, Rebecca, is a departure from the norm. She has inner demons to contend with and makes different choices than many of us would. Before this was published I considered modifying her character to conform to the expectations most readers have for a female lead, but it bothered me to see her changing into someone else. In the end, I stuck to my original vision of Rebecca with her kind heart, quirks, awkwardness and bad behavior.

Favorite lines:

And even though he was gagged, the part of his mouth that was still visible showed a smile. He was grinning the way evil does when it knows it has you.

It felt so damned good to be with him, but at the same time it also felt sick and wrong, and much like the contrary mixture of sweet and sour in Chinese food, it was delicious as hell. God help me.

He had gotten under my skin, turning frigid on me after my remark about his desperate, delusional horseshit. In retrospect, that had been the wrong approach to take with him.

Favorite Christmas memory or tradition:

We always make snowball cookies (proper name: Russian Teacakes). It just wouldn’t be Christmas without them.

Devil’s Eyes – Michael Myers, a Romance Hero?

Our OKRWA Chapter held a ‘Romancing the Monster’ contest where we could write a no more than 500 word scene involving some kind of monster or horror character. It had to involve romance, or at least an attraction and absolutely could not be more than 500 words, which is a bit tricky to pull off. It had to be a specific character, not just a werewolf or vampire, etc. Well…as twisted as it may be, I’ve always felt that Michael Myers of Halloween fame was kind of sexy. (I know, I know, I SAID it was twisted). So, I chose him to feature in my contribution to the contest. I coordinated the contest, so I made myself ineligible to place, even though the judges didn’t know which story was mine, or that I’d even contributed a story. I just couldn’t resist the fun of writing and submitting. 🙂

In the spirit of the season, I’m sharing my mini-scene here. If you’ve seen the movies, even just the first one, you’ll ‘get’ a lot of the references.

I’m going to check with the other entrants and see if they object to my sharing their stories as well. Stay tuned…(of course, you all want to know the winners, right?)

Devil’s Eyes

Haddonfield, IL 1992, Halloween Night

Brisk October wind bit into Doctor Phoebe Loomis’s flesh beneath her thin jacket. Dry leaves skittered down the sidewalk, sounding like cracking bones.

In the aftermath of the murders, the darkened neighborhood was silent. Along the street, houses were adorned with witches, goblins, and grotesquely smiling jack-o-lanterns. One particularly creative individual had transformed his yard into a cemetery, complete with headstones and an open grave with a ‘corpse’ lying next to it.

Red and blue strobe lights painted the faces of the officers leading the killer from the house. Michael Myers, wearing charcoal-gray coveralls and a blood-sprinkled white mask, towered above the two men.

Her pulse skipped, and she took a deep breath to still her racing heart. What was wrong with her? How could she be attracted to a…monster? Tonight, he’d killed five teenagers who’d been partying in his childhood home—thrill seekers, fascinated by the legend of Michael Myers. He’d taken countless lives since his escape from Smith’s Grove Sanitarium in 1978, where he’d been incarcerated for fifteen years after he murdered his teen sister, Judith, on Halloween—at six years old.

After her uncle’s death last year, Phoebe took over his psychiatry practice. Daily, she’d devoured Michael’s file.  Yes, Michael had committed atrocities. But atrocities had been committed against him too. A relative told of how Judith abused him. All these years, he’d been killing his sister over and over. His tormented soul cried out to Phoebe. She couldn’t explain it any more than she could explain sunrises. They simply were.

Tomorrow, she would meet with a man who murdered without conscience. And tonight, like many others, she would dream of his touch, his kiss…

She grimaced. If the authorities knew of her twisted fascination with Michael Myers, not only would they not let her near him, they’d lock her up as well.

****

The interrogation room door opened and Phoebe snapped her head up. Michael—sans mask, wearing an orange jumpsuit, hands and feet shackled—stepped inside. His eyes—her uncle called them Devil’s eyes—were black as a midnight sky. But unlike her uncle, she saw more than a soulless killing machine in their depths.

Michael eyed her warily and dropped into a chair. He was handsomer than she expected. Dark, tousled hair and, other than a jagged scar running along his rugged jawline, he was…beautiful

She offered a tentative smile. “I’m Sam Loomis’ niece, Phoebe.”

He rested his shackled hands on the tabletop. His dark gaze, so intent it stole her breath, locked onto her face. Tingles skated over her skin and she glanced away.

When his touch landed on her hand, she jerked her head up. Michael’s firm lips had softened—not quite a smile, but something…pleasant.

“Phoebe…” His gravelly voice sent shivers along her flesh. “I’ll tell you my story.” Relief surfaced in his ebony eyes. “Then maybe, I’ll find peace.”

She clasped her fingers around his and nodded, smiling through tears. “I’m here for you. As long as you need me.”

The Sheriff Meets His Match By Jacquie Biggar – Giveaway!

Please help me welcome today’s guest and her new release…

jbiggar

Blurb:

When a jaded sheriff is drawn to an exasperating woman in trouble, anything can happen

Laurel Thomas has always experienced life from the outside looking in. She likes the warm welcome she’s received in Tidal Falls and wants to make a home in this friendly little town, far away from her egocentric family. But then her uncle arrives and she learns the past has a way of catching up to her.

Jack Garrett is satisfied with his uncomplicated life. He has a good job as the sheriff of his hometown, a nice home, and a beautiful teenage daughter. So why is he struggling against his attraction for the disorganized new hire at the department, Laurel Thomas? She threatens everything he’s worked so hard to avoid—like falling in love.

Can two people with enough emotional baggage to sink a ship find a way to give each other a chance, or is this match doomed to drown?

jbiggar2

Excerpt:

Jack hesitated with his hand fisted to knock on Laurel’s pumpkin-colored door. His aunt had this thing about brightly painted doors being good luck, or some such hogwash. The murmur of a voice from within told him Laurel had company. Male company. He tapped the file in his other hand against his thigh and glared a hole through the door.

“Guess it can wait ’til morning,” he grumbled, turning to step gingerly down the snow-covered stairs. Whoever-the-asshat-was, he could have at least shoveled them off for her. Just as he reached the sidewalk an angry shout coming from inside the house startled him. Jack grabbed for his service revolver and jumped for the door. He missed the stairs entirely and dropped the file, allowing it to fall unheeded into the snowbank. The papers from within tobogganed down the slope.

He rammed a fist against the wood. “Sheriff’s department, open the door.” His heart thundered in his chest and there was a ringing in his ears. Was he having a frigging heart attack for crying out loud? He’d never reacted like this before, not even when he’d chased after a murderer a few months ago. But the thought of someone hurting…

“Laur…el,” he shouted, panic clawing the back of his throat. Jack tried the knob but it was locked. He took a step back, angled himself sideways, and prepared to slam his shoulder into the wood. He started forward, slipping a little on the icy deck boards. Good thing, because it slowed him down just enough to narrowly avoid ploughing Laurel over when she pulled the door open.

“Hello?”

When she saw him barrelling toward her with a gun in hand her beautiful eyes took over her face. “Yee…ahh,” she cried, tumbling backward and smacking her head against the now swinging door.

Fuuuck.

Jack tried backpedalling, but the slippery footing beneath his cowboy boots—dumb choice of footwear—had him sailing right into her already off-balanced body.

“Laurel, holy shit.” His hand reached out to grip her shoulder, conscious of the soft womanly feel of her plastered against his rapidly hardening body. Great. “I’m sorry, honey. Are you okay?”

INTERVIEW:

What inspired your latest book?

I’ve wanted to write a holiday romance for some time now and with the Christmas season fast approaching within my series, Wounded Hearts, it seemed like a perfect fit.

What is your typical day like?

First things, first; Coffee 🙂

Then I usually open my blog, check for comments that need answering, do the SM trail, and end with my emails. That takes up most of my day, then it’s family time. Around nine or ten at night the house gets quiet and I can work on my newest project, a paranormal romance. I do that until midnight or so, go to bed, read a couple of chapters, and start the whole process over the next day. I know, exciting hey?

How much time do you spend promoting your books?  What works best for you?

Probably not as much as I should be, it’s hard to promote without making people tune you out. You need to be inventive. Meme’s are great and easy to set up; I use Canva.com for mine. Paying for ads can help, just don’t let it eat up all of your budget; a couple that I’ve found good are Choosey Bookworm and The Ereader Cafe

Other than that I think it’s key to make friends with likeminded writers. There’s nothing better than having a large group of supporters guarding your back.

How has your experience with self-publishing been?

I’m happy I decided to go the self-publishing route. It’s enabled me to be my own boss. That being said, there’s no one else to blame if I don’t succeed. There’s a lot of work involved in becoming an indie author. And that’s after writing the best novel the world’s ever seen. You need to be willing to take on all aspects of the business, because that is what being self-pubbed is; a business. From cover design, to formatting and uploading, to book-keeping and promoting. Writing is a full-time job.

Do you have critique partners?

Yes, I do. Critique partners are crucial to the writing process. They are your beta readers, editors, critics, and biggest supporters all rolled up into one neat package. I belong to a fantastic group called Lethal Ladies, which is a part of RWA’s Kiss of Death chapter-specializing in the romantic suspense genre. I also belong to a group of four wonderful ladies from my local group, Vancouver Island Romance Writers, who I cherish for their kindness and generosity.

Give us an elevator pitch for your book.

When a jaded sheriff is drawn to an exasperating woman in trouble, anything can happen

Jack Garrett is satisfied with his uncomplicated life. He has a good job as the sheriff of his hometown, a nice home, and a beautiful teenage daughter. Jack struggles against his attraction for the disorganized new hire at the department, Laurel Thomas. She threatens everything he’s worked so hard to avoid—like falling in love.

What genres are you drawn to as a reader?

I generally look to romantic suspense novels for my reading pleasure. I like the tension and the fight to overcome evil that is the mark of a good suspense book. The hero/heroine have to fight tremendous odds to get their happy ever after. It makes the reader gain empathy and keeps those pages turning 🙂

Bound & Teased – Marie Tuhart – Giveaway!!!

Please welcome my guest, Marie Tuhart, sharing her latest release, Bound & Teased…

Marie cover

Blurb:

Eight years ago, a naive Katie Crane ran from Ry and Jed, warned their brand of love would ruin her life. Now she’s all grown up and returning home with a better understanding of the BDSM lifestyle. After the betrayal she’s faced at her father’s hands, she worries she won’t be strong enough to submit to the men she gave her heart and virginity to at eighteen.

Jed Malloy and Ry McCade are surprised and thrilled by Katie’s return to Felton’s Creek. They’d been heartbroken after her departure and had turned to each other, embracing the BDSM lifestyle without her. Katie’s homecoming sparks hope and worry. Ry isn’t sure he can keep his dominant side under control, and Jed fears Katie will see him as less of a man by being a switch and Ry’s submissive.

Having Katie back could mean the beginning of everything   they’ve ever wanted or the end to the only family they’ve ever known.

Excerpt: (WARNING – Explicit)

“Welcome home.” Jed’s breath skimmed her neck before his lips touched her skin.

“It’s been too damn long.” Ry didn’t hesitate, his mouth closing over hers.

Her heart pounded as Ry’s mouth devoured hers. Jed nipped at her skin with little bites where her neck and shoulder met and she let out a gasp, allowing Ry to slide his tongue past her lips.

Two sets of hands roamed over her body. Ry cupped her ass, pulling her against his hard cock. Jed teasing the underside of her breasts, making her nipples pebble while he pressed his equally hard erection against her ass.

“My turn.” The words barely registered before Ry released her lips. Strong fingers cupped her chin, her head turned, and Jed took her mouth.  His lips were softer, but his kiss was as hard and demanding as Ry’s, but less urgent.

Two men, two different kisses. Her brain grappled with the way they tasted. Each different. Ry, metal and coffee, Jed, mint and the outdoors. Oh, God. They tasted the same as they had when she was eighteen.

Her body was melting between them. She curled one arm around Jed’s neck, and the other hand began caressing Ry’s chest. Her helplessness to resist these two men was starting again. And did she care? At the moment, no, but she’d come home knowing they weren’t going to play it safe, not this time.

Now, let’s get to know Marie…

  1. Where did you get the idea for Bound & Teased?

Well, I had written a couple of books that had a one-time ménage scene in them and I began to think why not write a story with a committed ménage and see how that works.

  1. Why did you choose this genre (is it something you’ve written in before)?

I’ve written in erotic romance before.  I chose the genre because I write Alpha males and erotic romance gives me the freedom to allow my men to be men without worrying about how politically correct it is.

  1. What was the most difficult thing about this one in particular?

This is the first time I’ve written a committed ménage book and a book that has some m/m in it.  I’ve never written m/m and wasn’t planning to until the two male hero’s chimed up and said “Oh by the way, we play together so figure it out.”

  1. What do you want readers to come away with after they read Bound & Teased?

That love comes in all shapes and sizes.  As long as people love each other there is nothing wrong with their lifestyle.

  1. What genre have you never written that you’d like to write?

Paranormal – I’ve had some paranormal ideas, but the world building scares me.

  1. Your favorite…

Place you’ve visited: England I can’t wait to go back

Food: Pizza

Sports team: San Francisco Forty Niners

Thank you for joining me today. I enjoyed your answers, my ex-husband is a huge 49’ers fan. 🙂

Halloween Kisses ~ New Release by Susan R. Hughes

I love Halloween and I always look forward to Halloween stories each year.

Please help me welcome my guest, Susan R. Hughes and her new release, Halloween Kisses…Love the cover!

susan

Blurb:

One kiss can change everything. Dulcie has had a secret crush on her co-worker Rowan for ages, but she’s too shy to let him know, and preoccupied with raising her rebellious teenage sister. When she bumps into him in the darkness of a haunted barn, she can’t resist stealing just one kiss.

That kiss enchants Rowan. If only he could figure out the identity of the woman whose kiss haunts him. While running from a troubled past, he may find that the woman he least suspects could lead him out of the dark forever.

And now, let’s get to know Susan…

Where did you get the idea for Halloween Kisses?

When I decided to write a Halloween book, I knew I wanted a scene at a masquerade ball. This led me to the idea of a very shy woman who wears a metaphorical mask every day, hiding herself and her feelings in order to shield herself from rejection. Halloween is the day she finally finds the strength to shed her mask and show the world, and the man she loves, who she really is.

Do you have another occupation, other than writer? If so, what is it and how do you like it?

I’m a professional editor. I find it very rewarding to take a good piece of text and polish it up so it shines.

What’s the main thing that you could get rid of in your life that would give you more writing time?

My kids – but of course I wouldn’t want to get rid of them! Well, maybe just for a few days…

What do you want readers to come away with after they read Halloween Kisses?

I would like readers to feel that they’ve gotten to know Dulcie and Rowan, and cheer when they find their way to each other. One reader told me that a particular scene made her cry. What more could I ask for?

Would you rather have a bad review or no review?

No review. Bad reviews are crushing. No review gives me something to aim for.

What genre have you never written that you’d like to write?

Historical fiction in the Tudor era. But the research involved has held me back so far.

What is your favorite quote?

“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans” – John Lennon

Spotlight on… The Other Side (Melinda’s Story) by Starr Gardinier

A new release from Starr Gardinier. Sounds like a spooky, compelling read…

TheOtherSide_w9601_750
Blurb:
Melinda’s family is dead, killed for information that is hidden deep within her mind. Her father tries to warn her from the ‘Other Side’ that she is in danger from the killers who want what only she can give them. Committed to Skyview Haven, she must determine if the ‘Other Side’ truly exists or if it is a trick of her heart and mind. With time running out Melinda must determine who she can trust. Is it the ghosts of her family, a boy who may not be who he appears to be, or the doctor who is determined to cure her? Can she figure out the truth before it is too late?
Excerpt:

“Remember, I just ran from Beth and I’m standing in the backyard looking at my house. The house is lit up and I see Kyle in the window. I knew I had to go in and face whatever was coming. For some reason, I knew there was no turning back. I couldn’t go back to Beth, but I was afraid to go forward. What if they are both gone? Would that mean I killed them? Was it really up to me to decide who lives and who dies?
“I was angry. I wasn’t God! This wasn’t my choice. Deep in my soul I knew that once I walked into my house, life as I knew it before my father’s car accident, before I heard my father’s voice, before Beth drowned in the same river as my father, would not be the same. I couldn’t turn back time. Choices are made every day and for some reason, I was being forced to make this one.
“I turned around and looked back at our path and whispered, “I love you, Beth. I will see you again.”
“Having made my decision, I strode up to the house, my legs getting heavier with each step, and opened the kitchen door. I tried to change my frown into a smile, but it didn’t work very well. My eyes still blazed with fury when my mom and Kyle looked up. I could tell Mom had been crying. She rushed to my side, knelt down, and hugged me.
“Melinda! You’re soaked to the bone! And muddy. What in the world?”
“She took my jacket off of me and Kyle handed her a towel. She proceeded to dry my hair, but I took her hand and stopped her. At least her nurturing was changing my attitude, even if I did know what was coming. It felt good to have Mom tending to my needs. I wished I knew then what I know now. I would have let her fuss over me more. Instead I would shrug her hugs off and air-kiss her when I had to.
“Mom?”
“It’s okay. You’re home now. It’s all okay.”
“Where’s Dad?”
“My mom and Kyle exchanged looks. It confirmed my suspicions, but I needed to hear it.
“Where is he?” I asked again.
“Mel…”
“Kyle walked to me, an anguished look on his face.
“Where is he?” I screamed.
“Melinda, there’s been an accident. Your father was coming home. He…”
“Tears rolled down my mother’s cheeks.
“He’s dead, isn’t he?” I quietly asked.
“I wanted them to say it. I needed to hear them say it out loud. My heart was heavy. I just killed my father. It was my fault.
“Mel, he’s in the hospital. Mom and I couldn’t find you. We didn’t want to go there without you knowing.”
“In the hospital?” I asked, shocked.
“Maybe I was wrong. I had to be wrong! My dad wasn’t dead because I spent time with Beth. It was going to be all right. I was overcome with joy.
“I smiled and said, “Let’s go. I want to see Dad.”
“I began putting my coat back on, but my mom stopped me.
“You’re in your pajamas. Go clean up and change.”
“I began to leave the room, stopped and turned around and told them, “Dad’s going to be just fine now.”
“I believed that with my whole heart. After all, I left Beth. It really sucked that I had to choose, but there was nothing else I could have done.
“When we got to the hospital, Mom made Kyle and me wait in the hall while she talked to the doctor. They left the door slightly open and we could hear quite a bit. The doctor was telling Mom that Dad had hypothermia. I didn’t understand a lot of it at the time. They said something about Dad being confused, he was in cold water, and ended up laying on the side of the river, half in and half out.
“We heard a loud bang and nurses were running in and out of a nearby room. One of them darted into the doctor’s office. Within seconds, the doctor flew out of his office and into the other room. My mother was on his heels.
“Mom?” Kyle asked.
“She grabbed us both, one with each hand and pulled us close.
“It’s your father.”
“He’s going to be fine, Mom,” I tried to reassure her. I looked up at her and said, “You’ll see.”
“A few minutes later, the doctor walked out of the room slowly, head down. He looked up at my mother then met my eyes.
“No! No!”

Must Love Cats ~ Elysa Hendricks ~ ON SALE 99¢ ~ Giveaway

Welcome today’s guest…Elysa Hendricks and her latest release… MUST LOVE CATS – The Nine Lives of Thomas Cash Riley – Book I

Elysa

Blurb:

Thomas Cash (TC) Riley is mad, bad and –dead. Killed in a one car wreck the twenty-nine-year old playboy is given one last chance to redeem himself for living a selfish, unfulfilled life and to determine his soul’s final destination.

To help his young daughter recover from the loss of her mother, Daniel Bishop, a widower who dislikes the country and is allergic to anything with fur, has moved back to his wife’s rural hometown to be close to her large family.

Katherine Sinclair, the local veterinarian and the single mother of an adventurous ten-year old son, is wary of the handsome newcomer. Once before she’d given her heart to a wealthy, charming man and she’d ended up pregnant and alone.

With the help of a lonely little girl and a brash young boy, can TC find a way to bring these two damaged people together? Can he remember his past and save his soul in the allotted time?

And can he do it all as a cat?

Excerpt:

Daniel stood by the counter with a can of beer in his hand. He glanced at me then at the untouched cat food on the floor. “Not hungry?”

I walked over to the disgusting stuff and gave it a whack with my paw. The bowl flipped, spilling the congealed lump onto the floor with a wet splat.

“Guess you don’t care for that brand.” Daniel grinned down at me then grabbed some paper towel, wiped the mess away and tossed it in the trash. “Can’t say I blame you. I wonder why cat food is so . . . aromatic. You cats are supposed to have a more sensitive sense of smell than humans, and I think the stuff stinks.”

Maybe there was hope for a decent meal yet.

“Maybe you’d like some of the dry stuff better?” He pulled a bag out of the pantry and started to open it.

I butted my head against his leg with enough force to knock him slightly off balance.

He looked down in surprise. “Easy there, tiger. You’ll get fed.”

“Not with that crap,” I yowled and grabbed his ankle with the tips of my claws.

He jumped. The bag tipped and fell off the counter. Cat kibble spilled over the floor. I sat on my hunches and glared at the offensive stuff.

“Damn cat!” Muttering under his breath he swept up the kibble then grabbed up his beer. “Now you’ll just have to wait until I have a drink. It’s been a long, hot, difficult day.”

Condensation beaded on the can. I watched as he lifted the can to open it. My mouth watered at the thought of an ice-cold beer sliding down my parched throat.

Remembering my frustration from earlier, I couldn’t keep myself from grinning.

He lowered the can and regarded me curiously. “Well, not all of it was bad. Kat’s a great woman. Beautiful. Caring. Funny. Smart. After the scare with Alana we all had fun. I can relax and be myself with her in a way I never thought possible.” He pressed the can against his forehead. “I just don’t know if I’m ready for a relationship yet. It’s been less than a year since Hannah died. It feels disloyal to consider being with another woman. And that’s if she’d even have me.”

He leaned back against the counter. “Which do you think is more selfish? Pursuing Kat? Or keeping the status quo? Alana likes her. A girl needs a mother. But do I need a woman complicating my life?”

In order to accomplish my mission, I knew I needed to help him find the answers to his questions, but even as a man I doubted I’d have had the right words, the right answers. As a cat I couldn’t begin to offer advice. I ground my teeth is frustration.

He shook his head. “Look at me. Talking to a damned cat.”

“Cat?” I mewed in affronted protest. All the sympathy I felt for the man evaporated. I waited.

He popped the tab. The eruption was just what I’d hoped for. Beer spewed upward, drenching his face and chest. My satisfaction was short-lived. He jerked the can out from his body and beer cascaded down over me. With a squawk I bolted up, but not before I was covered in sticky foam.

And now, let’s get to know Elysa…

What was the most difficult thing about writing this book?

Writing MUST LOVE CATS – Book I of The Nine Lives of Thomas Cash Riley was so much fun I barely remember the usual angst I suffer when writing a book. I got to put myself not only into the mind of a man; I also delved into what it would be like to be a cat.

I’ve been an animal lover all my life. I’ve owned or been owned by all variety of furred, feathered, and scaled creatures. Cats are a particular favorite. People who are not owned by a cat might find cats aloof, but we feline-loving folk know better. While dogs bound into our lives and hearts, giving us their love and devotion with fearless abandon, cats are more selective. We have to earn their trust and respect before they allow us to be their support staff.

I’ve always said that if I come back after I die I want to do so as someone’s pampered pussy cat. MUST LOVE CATS is my take on what it would be like.

MUST LOVE CATS is a contemporary fantasy about a man who, in order to redeem his soul, is reincarnated as a cat and tasked with helping two damaged people find love.

Do you have another occupation, other than writer? If so, what is it and how do you like it?

In my bio I describe myself as a writer, a wife, a mother, and a daughter. Over the years I’ve worked many jobs, store clerk, insurance underwriter, video store owner, textbook buyer, writing instructor, daycare provider, and the list goes on. In each of these occupations I found things I enjoyed, but none of them excite me and fill me with joy the way writing does.

What do you want readers to come away with after they read your book?

I’d love for my readers to experience along with the hero and heroine the emotions of falling in love. I want them to laugh and cry, and at the end to close the book with a satisfied sigh eager to pick up my next book and do it all over again.

Would you rather have a bad review or no review?

Though of course a good review is always better than a bad review, any review that explains why the book was (in the reader’s opinion) good or bad is appreciated. One of my favorite reviews for my sexy sci-fi romance STAR CRASH called the book “bad porn.” My question is: How much porn do you have to read to tell the difference between good porn and bad porn. My husband’s answer: There’s no such thing as bad porn. As you can tell, hubby and I have a twisted sense of humor. Amazingly, after that review posted, sales on STAR CRASH went up.

What is your favorite quote?

“There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.” Somerset Maugham

If you were stranded on a deserted island and you could have 3 (inanimate) objects, what would they be?

An unlimited supply of dark chocolate, paper, and pencils.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with?

Bear Grylls from Man Vs Wild, for two reasons. He’d take care of the survival part and he’s cute. But, even though he’s not much of an outdoorsman, I’d rather be stranded with my husband.
