 A waitress came to take it off his hands. “Another?” she queried and he nodded agreement, placing a crumpled dollar on her tray. “Too much,” she told him shaking her head no. Matthew was surprised by her response but the tray was covered with loose change so he removed his bill and left the equivalent in quarters. Everything was so inexpensive but the server still needed to make a decent living.
She gave him a grateful smile and turned to move to her next customer, carefully balancing her tray above the heads of the young people around her. In the process, she nudged Matthew slightly causing him to lose his footing and fall gently against another body. Turning to apologize he found himself staring into the clearest, lightest blue eyes he had ever seen. He couldn’t look away.
“Sorry,” he mumbled when he finally regained his composure.
“That’s okay,” she replied with a quick, bright smile. She was lovely, in a wholesome girl next door way. She had her blond hair pulled into a ponytail that curled like a hair product ad, clear-skinned cheeks that were pink with warmth and perhaps exertion, and a curvy body displayed under a bright red sweater and a flared plaid skirt.
Matthew felt his mouth go dry and his palms get sweaty. She did something to him, this fresh faced woman that he found incredibly sexy. Her red lipstick was a slash of bright color mimicking the red of the sweater. Until this moment, bright red lipstick screamed “tough broad, stay away” to Matthew but on this girl it whispered “come hither.”
“Matthew,” he squeaked out, extending his hand to shake hers. Thinking twice about it, he retracted his arm, running his palm against his pants swiftly, and hopefully surreptitiously, before he extended his hand again.
“Patty,” she responded, placing her soft fingers in his large palm. She shook like a girl. After all the bone-breaking handshakes Matthew had endured across the globe, this limp, fingers-only shake surprised him. She looked athletic, not tough but toned, and not sickly pale like most Chicagoans in winter. The handshake didn’t match the image and normally would have bothered him. Nothing about Patty bothered him. Everything about her bothered him.

Author Interview with Stanalei Fletcher, PLUS a 99 cent sale!!!

I love author interviews and today, I’m sharing an interesting one from Stanalei Fletcher, along with an amazing 99 cent sale on each of the books in her Northstar Security series!

 

What is the first book that made you cry?

The first book that made me cry…hmmm…this is tough question, because I’m not a very emotional person. I honestly don’t recall any books as a child that brought tears to my eyes, although I do recall sobbing pretty hard at the movie, Black Beauty. The first book that made me cry came a bit later in life. I’d been reading everything I could put my hands on by Alistair McLean. I’d left reading his first book, HMS Ulysses until almost last, thinking I wouldn’t enjoy it as much as his other works. I was wrong. This book wasn’t just about one protagonist. Instead, the story fictionally chronicled the ship and the men who fought aboard her. Their heroic struggles to save that ship still resonates with me. I’m not ashamed to say I cried at the end of that story.

Did you ever consider writing under a pseudonym (or do you already)?

I do write under a pseudonym. My pen name is a combination of my husband’s middle name and my father’s middle name. I chose to do this partly as a marketing tool and partly because I still work a day job, where most of my fellow coworkers do not know I write.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

Excellent question and one that challenges writers who desire to have their works published and read. I don’t believe what I write is terribly original in concept or in plot lines. I believe the originality in my stories comes from the personal experiences and knowledge I bring to the story. I am a firm believer in STORY. Readers and audiences in general, select their entertainment with preconceived expectations. If I don’t deliver on those expectations, they will intuitively know something is missing. They may not know what, but they will feel dissatisfied when they close the book. I strive very hard to make sure I don’t leave a reader wanting.

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

My Northstar series is a connected work, currently with five books. However each book in the series was deliberately written to be read as a standalone. Personally, I’m not a fan of serials, so I don’t care to write them. That said, I do understand their appeal and the authors who produce them have my upmost respect. I think it’s a rare talent to write in the same world book after book.

If you could tell your younger self anything, what would it be?

Unfortunately, I would tell my younger self the same thing I tell myself today. Stop worrying about things I can’t control. I’ve had people telling me that all my life. Yet, it’s still a concept I’m trying master.

How do you balance making demands on the reader with taking care of the reader?

I don’t believe it’s my place to make demands on any reader. I certainly do what I can to take care of the reader by producing the best work I’m able. It’s my job as a writer, especially if I want the reader to part with, not only their hard earned dollars, but their time, to put effort into my craft and offer them a satisfying read and time well spent.

Do you view writing as a kind of spiritual practice?

I do see writing as spiritual practice. I see it as a way to put my expressions and emotions into words. I believe it to be a practice on the path to mastery of life.

How do you select the names of your characters?

Like many writers, I have a baby names book. And I make use of it. There were all those great names I wanted to name my own children but I was limited to only a few…which for the kids ended up being mostly family names. Well, now I get to name my characters with those great names. How cool is that?

That said, I do try to fit the name to the personality of the character as I envision him/her. If I find a name isn’t working, it’s not like I have to go before a judge to have a character’s name changed. I can simply pick another name. That’s pretty cool too.

What is your favorite childhood book?

I have a well-worn book of Grimm’s Fairy Tales. I’d have to say that is my personal favorite. I’m not locked into a single story, but have all the great ones from Cinderella to Snow-White and Rose-Red.

What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

The most difficult part of my artistic process is being an artist. I’m mostly left-brained and tend to overthink a lot of the process. But I do love the creative sparks and it’s very exciting for me when it flows and the words come together.

Riley waited until the conference door closed and then picked up the sealed envelope on the table. “What’s this?”

His father gestured with his hand. “Open it.”

Chip gasped.

His gaze locked on to the violent storm brewing inside her gray eyes. The temperature inside the room increased. His breathing matched the rise and fall of her chest as the room filled with white noise. Her slender hand trembled ever so slightly as he slipped the band onto her fourth finger. It fit perfectly. He stared into the dark pools of her eyes, like a man dying of thirst in the scorched desert. Uninvited, the timeless words from the marriage ceremony echoed through his head. “With this ring…”

Stunned by the thought, he stopped short of speaking the words aloud. At the head of the table, Byron cleared his throat and broke the spell.

Riley dropped her hand as though he’d been burned. He returned to his side of the table, picked up the other ring, and slid it on the fourth finger of his left hand. No fanfare. No ceremony. Author Interview & A Touchdown To Remember By Seelie Kay

 I always enjoy getting to know my fellow authors…Seelie Kay is with me today sharing a fun interview!

 

Please tell us a little about yourself, where are you from? Where do you live now? Family? Pets?

I am a lawyer, journalist, and author who writes sizzling short stories about lawyers in love, with a dash of kink and bit of humor!  I was born and raised in Wisconsin, and after moving around a lot, returned almost 30 years ago.  I live with my teenage son near Milwaukee.  Unfortunately, we didn’t have the heart to replace our basset hound when she died, and found we really sucked at raising fish, so no pets at the present time.

Where did you get the idea for A Touchdown To Remember?

When I was creating the story for my stocking stuffer, A Touchdown To Remember, I wanted something that combined all my favorite things about the season—holiday romance, football, and snow.  However, all of my stories are about lawyers in love, so that element needed to be incorporated as well.  I must have played around with ideas for more than a month before I saw a story about concussion protocol.  Then I thought, “How about a story about a football player who suffers a potentially career-ending concussion and must make a hard decision about his future? No wait, maybe a football player who is a part-time law student because that makes the decision harder– in law, your brain is your money.  And maybe he falls in love with another lawyer who is also a die-hard football fan. How might that impact his decision? And how would if impact her feelings about him?”

I had my story and I actually wrote it in one day.

Are there any tricks, habits or superstitions you have when creating a story?

I am not a very disciplined writer. I write when inspired. Sometimes, I write for a half-hour, sometimes eight hours. As long as the ideas are flowing, my fingers are typing.

Do you collect anything? I am a great believer in life’s little miracles and many of them are delivered by angels. I have more than 1,000, most of them given to me as gifts.  I bring them out at Christmas time and it creates a rather otherworldly feel in my home.  

What was your first job?

My first real, full-time job was as an intern at a local newspaper. During high school, I worked part-time as a drug store clerk, a book binder repairer at the local high school, and as a babysitter. 

What’s your favorite book of all time and why?

I have always been a big fan of Winnie the Pooh. Some of A.A. Milne’s observations on life are quite profound. “Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”   A. Milne 

If you were stranded on a deserted island and you could have 3 (inanimate) objects, what would they be?

Matches, the Bible, and a big box of chocolate! 

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with?

Benjamin Franklin. Not only would he be able to invent whatever we needed to survive, but I suspect he would be a scintillating conversationalist! 

Who is the most famous person you have ever met?

President Reagan. I once wrote a Law Day speech for him. He was a very sweet, kind man. 

Your favorite movie.

Field of Dreams. A Miracle on 34th Street and August Rush are close seconds.  Obviously, I am a great believer in the power of hope

Your favorite food:

I am a great lover of French pastry, in particular Pain au Chocolat!

As Laura was pulled into the passionate kiss, she felt her resistance melting away. Her loins were heating and her heart was pounding. I want this man, naked and primed to please. Wait. No way. I am not going there. Abruptly, she pulled away.

Still holding her in his arms, Tim studied her. “You don’t wait until the time is right for relationships, Laura. You make the time when the right relationship presents itself. I am willing to make time for you. Are you willing to make time for me?”

Catherine Kean’s Her Gallant Knight from Treasure the Knight Boxed Set

Do you own a piece of jewelry with a lot of sentimental value? I do—a gold knot ring that belonged to my British grandmother, who died many years ago. While the ring is too small for me to comfortably wear, I cherish it because it’s not only exquisitely crafted, but it reminds me of her.

“Come on. Give me your hand,” he said, his tone gruffer than intended.

Why did she have to be so damned stubborn? He was tempted to outright ask her, but he didn’t want the conversation to become an argument. “I am sure, under normal circumstances, you could get down without assistance, but you have just been through a frightening ordeal.” If she still resisted, he’d mention her shaking hands.

“You may not be eager to get out of this contraption, Amelia, but I am.” Her hips swaying, Nanette crossed to the doorway and, with a coy smile, slid her fingers into his. Avoiding direct eye contact—he didn’t want to encourage the girl’s advances—he clasped her right hand and helped her down to the ground. When he tried to release her, she beamed and pressed his fingers in thanks before letting go.

He turned to Amelia. “Now you.”

She tucked loose strands of hair back behind her ear, clearly hesitant. Sunlight gleamed on the gold ring on her right hand—a jewel that would have been taken from her, if he and his men hadn’t stopped the outlaws. She could have lost far more than the ring, including her virtue. Thankfully he’d been able to disrupt the attack.

Amelia approached the doorway.

At last.

She extended her hand to grasp his. Her slender fingers were smooth and unblemished, as he’d expect of a noblewoman with a castle of servants to do her bidding.

As his fingers closed around hers, he caught a better view of her ring. The wide band was set with sapphires, rubies, and emeralds.

Shock jolted through him, for unless he was very much mistaken, ’twas his missing ring.

How had she gotten hold of it?

His fingers instinctively tightened, and she pulled back in response. He didn’t let go, though, and in the end, she had no choice but to step down to the ground.

Susie fiddled with the fringe on her jacket, inexplicably nervous for Peter as he stared at the audience.

A retort was on the tip of her tongue, but she thought better of it when Peter seemed to collect himself and began his dissertation. Thousands of wealthy pilgrims entrusted their money, lands and titles to them for safekeeping. New recruits donated all their possessions.”

She yawned, enjoying listening to him but thinking perhaps she’d be better off finding a quiet park bench somewhere. A nap would do her good before the shift at the pub. Even she knew the Templars had amassed their enormous treasure acting as bankers—most Crusaders never returned home to reclaim their valuables.

Startled when Peter unexpectedly removed his suit jacket and undid his tie, she sat up straight. He seemed self-conscious about it, but, holy smokes, fit didn’t begin to describe him. He was built! The conservative suit hadn’t done justice to the powerful shoulders and broad chest that tapered to a lean waist. He patiently rolled up his shirtsleeves to reveal corded forearms dusted with light brown hair. Susie tried to swallow, but without saliva it was impossible. The nerd had transformed into a jock who’d set her heart pounding. Which was strange. Muscle-bound men didn’t turn her on, but Peter Bateson had made her panties alarmingly damp.

In her agitated state, she was completely unprepared for what happened next. He shrugged a tunic over his head, thrust his arms through the armholes, and explained, “I thought a visual aid might help us better identify with the thousands of knights faced with the annihilation of the Templar Order by King Philip of France in the fourteenth century.”

Susie gaped at the knight who’d haunted her dreams for weeks, incapable of coherent thought, until Peter said, “The big question is, what happened to the Templars’ account books when the surviving knights supposedly fled La Rochelle by sea? The logs have never been found and my thesis proves neither they nor the so-called treasure still exist.”

Of course. The logs! Now she was awake, it was so stupidly obvious what the knight had meant. She vaulted to her feet and gripped the pew in front of her. “No,” she shouted, “De Norrels has the logs.”

After a moment of hesitation, Lia answered, “No. He was dead when I found him.”

Frustrated, Kade bent and ran his hands over the knight’s body, waving a few flies away that had started to congregate around the corpse. Perhaps the knight had something that was important, the ‘it’ of his mother’s message. He searched again, slowly. He tucked his hands into the knight’s belt, into his empty scabbard. He removed one of his boots and looked inside.

“What are you looking for?” Lia wondered.

Kade didn’t answer. He had no idea what he was searching for. Maybe there was nothing here. He removed the other boot and looked inside. Kade lifted the knight’s tunic and then the knight’s chainmail. Blood lined the old man’s stomach. The gaping wound had stopped flowing. There was nothing hidden there. He sat back on his heels. “You found him like this?”

“Yes.”

“Was anyone else around? Another knight?” He swiveled around to look at her. “Did you see anyone else?”

She shook her head, her red locks swaying over her shoulders in thick waves.

“Did you try to help him?”

“He was already dead when I found him.”

Kade looked back at the knight and stood. There was nothing on him that might elicit the message from his mother. Whatever reason his father was searching for him so badly, died with the knight.

Kade turned to Lia. The sun shone down through the leaves of the tree, pooling her in a glorious glow of sunlight. His breath caught. Her red hair all but glowed like fire as the sun touched it. Her nose was pert, her lips slightly parted. His gaze was caught by her dress and the nicely rounded portion of her breasts. For a quick moment, his gaze swept her chest and the way the fabric pulled over it. The torso of her dark cotton dress was splattered with a small freckling of black dots. It took a moment for Kade to realize he had seen that type of spatter before, numerous times. From dying knights. Those small dots of blood came from a mouth expulsion, coughing or sneezing of a mortally wounded knight.

Could the spattering have come from Sir de Rolleston? Had he been alive when she found him? What could the old knight have told her to make her lie to him?

The Scottish Highlands, 1317.

Francois de Valier crouched in the bushes, waiting for the stable attendant to leave. He suspected it was close to midnight, and he’d been squatting for so long, he wasn’t sure his cramped legs were strong enough to carry him the short distance to the stable—where he hoped to find a warm dry place to bed down for the night.

He’d emptied his wineskin before noon and would give anything for something to drink. It had been two days since he’d stolen some bannock from the windowsill of a croft in one of the small villages he’d ventured through on his way to Beauly. His mouth was bone dry and his empty stomach rumbled so loudly that and when the young man exiting the stable paused and glanced over his shoulder, Francois was certain the lad had heard the sound.

With bated breath, he waited until the young man was gone and the coast was clear before making his move. He rose to a wobbly stance, braced his throbbing ribs with his forearm and gritted his teeth against the pain that racked his body.

Not long after his arrival in Scotland, he’d been attacked by agents of the French crown, savagely beaten until he lost consciousness, then was left for dead. By the time they’d realized their mistake, he’d managed to crawl away. It was only by the grace of the Almighty that he had remained one step ahead of the assailants. Exhausted, and burning with fever, he just wanted to find a place to lay his head until morning.

His entire life had been one insurmountable challenge after another, and as a member of the now disbanded Knights Templar, he was no stranger to hardship, sacrifice, or suffering. The sacred order was formed for the protection of Christian pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land. Allowed to cross borders freely, they were exempt from all laws and answered to no one but the Pope. Despite their humble lifestyle, and originally being known as the Poor Knights of the Temple of Solomon, they had managed to amass a great fortune. Once touted as heroes, they were now fugitives, falsely accused of heinous crimes against the church and humanity, hunted like animals, and left fleeing for their lives.

Many times, he’d been tempted to give up, to face whatever punishment King Philip IV saw fit. But just prior to his capture and imprisonment, Francois entered into a covenant with several of his fellow knights, taking a sacred oath to protect religious artifacts taken from the Holy Land, and if necessary, guarding the treasure with his life. Liz Tyner: Ten Quotes That Focus My Writing World ~ Redeeming the Roguish Rake

Ten Quotes That Focus My Writing World

The profession of book writing makes horse racing seem like a solid, stable business.  John Steinbeck. When I realized that many authors from the past had day jobs, or were supported by someone else, or had an inheritance, I felt so much better. And when I realize I’ve chosen, in a surprise way, to be a professional gambler of sorts, it helps with the day job.

People ask you for criticism but they only want praise. W. Somerset Maugham.  It’s very true, but constructive criticism helps us grow as writers, and I believe the ability to listen and evaluate feedback is important. I still have to work, however, to keep from taking criticism personally.

The first sentence sells your novel, the last sentence sells the next one. Mickey Spillane. Most likely, I will spend the rest of my life hoping for a perfect first sentence and never entirely satisfied with the endings.

Try to leave out the parts that most people tend to skip: Elmore Leonard. Editing is so important.

The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter. It’s the difference between lightning and lightning bug. Mark Twain  When I’m having trouble finding the right word and I care, then I remember it matters.

It’s only a book. Tim Hallinan  When I get stuck on trying to find the right word and I give up. It’s only a book and if I don’t finish it, no one will be able to read it, ever. So the other 69,999 words are more important than one I can’t find.

You eat an elephant one bite at a time. Anne Lamont may have said this about writing, and it’s an old joke, but when I think about my book that isn’t written yet, and know I plan to submit it, and I need a pep talk, this type of quote resonates so that I’ll get busy and write one word at a time.

I don’t like green eggs and ham. Dr. Seuss He wrote a book using only fifty words. And he wrote it about green eggs.  It tells me to push myself, challenge myself and if I believe in a topic, then I should write about it.

You can do it. The Waterboy movie For some reason that imprinted in my brain. And when a deadline approaches, sadly I can hear the “You can do it all night long…” but it’s not true.

Royalties.  I don’t remember who said it first to me. But it does roll off the tongue and makes the Steinbeck quote a little more palatable.

By a sheer stroke of bad luck Henry gets caught in a tropical storm whilst he’s swimming in the sea.  He sensibly gets out of the water and finds shelter in a beach house, and a few moments later is joined by an equally sodden rain drenched lady.

Felicity is cold and wet and she has nothing dry to wear so she asks Henry to hold her so that they can both benefit from their body warmth until the rain subsides.

The story is set in South East Asia, and culminates in modern day Singapore, but the note above is only the start of a very long story…

Excerpt: 

The rain had not abated.  He looked around and then could see another figure struggling through the rain, and towards where he was standing.  As the figure approached Henry realised that it was a female figure wearing a sodden straw hat and a thin gossamer shawl that was also now sodden.  He held out a hand to help the woman climb the steps to the verandah, and now he could see that she was wearing only a bikini under her shawl.

“Thanks,” she acknowledged in English, dripping from the rain.

She took off her wet hat and dropped it on the floor.  She had wet hair, but the colour was just dark and not really distinguishable being wet.  Her transparent shawl clinged to her body and barely covered her so that he could see her dark blue green bikini under the shawl.

She shivered, and took off the shawl looking around her, just holding it in her hand.

“Do you live here?” she asked.

“No,” he replied, “like you I’m sheltering from the rain.”

“But you’re just as wet as me,” she smiled at him.

“I was swimming in the sea when the rain started,” he explained.

“That’s what I was planning to do,” she smiled again, and shivered.

“Don’t you have a towel?” she asked.

Henry pointed to his sodden towel still covering his haversack on the floor, and picked it up to wring it out.  He draped the towel over the hand rail just out of the rain.

He looked back at her and could see she still was still wet and shivering.  He reached for her hand and they moved together, just touching one another, but she shivered again looking up at him.
