Washed in the Water: Tales from the South offers vignettes of folks living the best they know how as they reach out for redemption. Set between 1950 and 1980, each tale stares at an individual as unique as the humid landscape of the South. Hard lives, daily survival, and lessons about getting on with the business of living reverberate among the characters.

“. . . compelling, wide-ranging stories. Hartney brings to mind both Caldwell and Allison, but her voice at last is her own. ‘Last Love’ is both gritty and warm, and ‘The Fig Trees’ is deftly nuanced.”
~ Robert Cochran, Center for Arkansas and Regional Studies, University of Arkansas

“This brief collection of stories deals with such diverse experiences as a river baptism and coon hunting while it embraces emotions of love, jealousy, and altruism. The seven southern tales contain some real gems.”
~ Pat Carr, author of One Page at a Time and The Radiance of Fossils

“No better voice of the south can be found than Nancy Hartney, with her touching stories of life looked at in a most extraordinary way. Hartney writes about people we can love or despise, but most of all sympathize with and enjoy.”
~ WILLA Award-winning author Velda Brotherton

Not every love story begins or ends with the passion of a bodice-ripper. Some develop slowly – an occasional look or a choice word the only spark they ever know. Some endure adversity – lies, infidelity, or opposition creating flames of distrust instead of the warm thaw of a hesitant heart. And some are so unlikely, so unexpected – no one sees the connection coming, not even the lovers themselves. “Mine to Tell” is a gentle story of adversity and forgiveness, a tale of mystery you won’t forget.

Blessed Mayhem by Sue Coletta ~ The story will stick with you long after The End

2017 WINNER of a READERS’ CHOICE AWARD in MYSTERY/THRILLER

A chance encounter … a deadly predicament … a lethal decision.

The infamous Mr. Mayhem is not your average serial killer. Reminiscent of the beloved Hannibal Lecter, minus his thirst for flesh–because eating humans is just plain rude–Mr. Mayhem storms on the scene with style, grace, elegance, and a zest for life unlike any other. Impeccable manners also help. He may commit murder, but there’s no reason to be impolite about it.

Accompanied by his loyal crow companions, Poe, Allan, and Edgar, his crimes strike fear in the hearts and minds of folks across Massachusetts’ North Shore. When Shawnee Daniels–cat burglar extraordinaire and forensic hacker for the police–meets Mayhem in the dark, she piques his curiosity. Sadly for her, she leaves behind an item best left undiscovered. Or is it serendipity by design?

Color him curious, but he yearns to examine the psychology behind her life choices, tough girl routine, witty banter, and unique double-life. In a different time and place they may even become friends. But unfortunately, their predicament defines the risk.

The stakes are too high to stop now.

For reasons authorities cannot fathom, these seemingly unrelated murders will go down in history as the most impressive killing regime of all time. His coup de grace, if you will. Even if it means permanently erasing Ms. Daniels from the equation. All the pieces are there if the authorities look hard enough. The question is, will they? The only new wrinkle is Shawnee Daniels, and she may be his toughest opponent yet …if she’s clever enough to play the game.

Catherine Kean’s Her Gallant Knight from Treasure the Knight Boxed Set

I’m pleased to introduce the fourth and final author in the Treasure the Knight boxed set. Please help me welcome Catherine Kean with Her Gallant Knight.

Do you own a piece of jewelry with a lot of sentimental value? I do—a gold knot ring that belonged to my British grandmother, who died many years ago. While the ring is too small for me to comfortably wear, I cherish it because it’s not only exquisitely crafted, but it reminds me of her.

The idea of a ring having important sentimental as well as monetary value became the starting point for Her Gallant Knight, one of four all-new stories in the $0.99 Treasure the Knight eBook collection that will be released on Kindle, Nook, Kobo, and iBooks on January 22. Each of the tales focuses on the Knights Templar and the riches they supposedly brought back with them from Crusade.

My heroine, Lady Amelia Bainbridge, received a ring from her beloved brother just before he died, and wears it in honor of him—unaware that the very same ring was stolen three weeks prior from Lord Ryder Stanbury, a Templar knight who vowed at a secret meeting at Acre to keep the jewel safe for the Order. Ryder and Amelia, once childhood friends, haven’t seen one another in six years, not since he embarrassed her in front of an important guest. When he rescues her and her lady-in-waiting from masked outlaws and sees Amelia has the ring, he is honor-bound to get the jewel back. She, however, refuses to part with it. They are forced to resolve what happened between them in the past, but are also drawn into a perilous quest to solve a mystery surrounding the ring. It’s a story that, I hope, will keep readers enthralled until the very end.

***GIVEAWAY – What piece of jewelry do you own that’s special to you? Tell me about it. Two commenters will win copies of the Treasure the Knight collection.

Blurb:

A humiliating childhood incident made Lady Amelia Bainbridge vow to avoid Lord Ryder Stanbury. Yet, years later, Ryder comes to her rescue. Shocked to recognize her ring, he realizes she’s connected somehow to the Templar treasure he and fellow knights brought back to England—riches that not only bring him and Amelia a second chance at love but deadly secrets.

Excerpt:

God’s Holy Bones. Seeing the sharp blade so close to Amelia’s creamy skin had almost driven Ryder to leap into the carriage and snatch the weapon away from her. Before he could act on that impulse, she’d succeeded in putting away the dagger.

He’d been vulnerable, though, for that brief moment. He didn’t like losing control of his emotions.

Even more irritating, she hadn’t moved to accept his offer of aid.

“Come on. Give me your hand,” he said, his tone gruffer than intended.

“I can get down from the carriage on my own.”

Why did she have to be so damned stubborn? He was tempted to outright ask her, but he didn’t want the conversation to become an argument. “I am sure, under normal circumstances, you could get down without assistance, but you have just been through a frightening ordeal.” If she still resisted, he’d mention her shaking hands.

“You may not be eager to get out of this contraption, Amelia, but I am.” Her hips swaying, Nanette crossed to the doorway and, with a coy smile, slid her fingers into his. Avoiding direct eye contact—he didn’t want to encourage the girl’s advances—he clasped her right hand and helped her down to the ground. When he tried to release her, she beamed and pressed his fingers in thanks before letting go.

He turned to Amelia. “Now you.”

She tucked loose strands of hair back behind her ear, clearly hesitant. Sunlight gleamed on the gold ring on her right hand—a jewel that would have been taken from her, if he and his men hadn’t stopped the outlaws. She could have lost far more than the ring, including her virtue. Thankfully he’d been able to disrupt the attack.

Amelia approached the doorway.

At last.

She extended her hand to grasp his. Her slender fingers were smooth and unblemished, as he’d expect of a noblewoman with a castle of servants to do her bidding.

As his fingers closed around hers, he caught a better view of her ring. The wide band was set with sapphires, rubies, and emeralds.

Shock jolted through him, for unless he was very much mistaken, ’twas his missing ring.

How had she gotten hold of it?

His fingers instinctively tightened, and she pulled back in response. He didn’t let go, though, and in the end, she had no choice but to step down to the ground.

“Thank you,” Amelia said, trying to withdraw her hand.

He held on, for he’d not let her escape just yet. “I could not help but notice your ring.”

Her cautious gaze locked with his.

“Where did you come by it?”

Anna Markland’s Knightly Dreams from Treasure the Knight Boxed Set

I’m pleased to introduce the third author in the Treasure the Knight boxed set. Please help me welcome Anna Markland with Knightly Dreams

Knightly Dreams is one of four brand new stories featured in the Templar anthology Treasure the Knight. For ten years, Anna has been thrilling readers with her page-turning, adventure-filled medieval romances. Fans of the genre have taken her Montbryce family to their hearts. However, Knightly Dreams is a somewhat different take on the fascinating history of the Templars. She refers to the story as a “contemporary medieval.” Many of Anna’s books are set in the 11th and 12th centuries, so delving into the 14th century was another first, and the hero and heroine are modern-day university students.

Blurb:

Peter Bateson is an accomplished graduate student whose doctoral thesis proves conclusively that the Templar treasure no longer exists. (Sorry Dan Brown). His well-researched theories and his comfortable lifestyle are challenged when he meets Susie, a university drop out who insists the treasure still exists because the Templar Knight who visits her dreams told her so.

Excerpt:

Susie fiddled with the fringe on her jacket, inexplicably nervous for Peter as he stared at the audience.

“Looks like a Templar preparing to face the hordes attacking Jerusalem,” her neighbor quipped, making no attempt to speak softly.

A retort was on the tip of her tongue, but she thought better of it when Peter seemed to collect himself and began his dissertation. He flipped through the introductory slides and his nervousness disappeared. It was evident he knew his topic inside out. She liked the sound of his voice. Deep, but not too deep. Confident.

She thought he’d noticed her before and been none too pleased to see her, but as his presentation went on she began to think she’d been mistaken.

He gave a succinct account of the founding of the Order of the Templars after the establishment of the first Crusader states in the Holy Land. “From humble beginnings as a small group tasked with protecting pilgrims, within twenty years they’d become the most powerful bankers in Christendom. Thousands of wealthy pilgrims entrusted their money, lands and titles to them for safekeeping. New recruits donated all their possessions.”

She yawned, enjoying listening to him but thinking perhaps she’d be better off finding a quiet park bench somewhere. A nap would do her good before the shift at the pub. Even she knew the Templars had amassed their enormous treasure acting as bankers—most Crusaders never returned home to reclaim their valuables.

Startled when Peter unexpectedly removed his suit jacket and undid his tie, she sat up straight. He seemed self-conscious about it, but, holy smokes, fit didn’t begin to describe him. He was built! The conservative suit hadn’t done justice to the powerful shoulders and broad chest that tapered to a lean waist. He patiently rolled up his shirtsleeves to reveal corded forearms dusted with light brown hair. Susie tried to swallow, but without saliva it was impossible. The nerd had transformed into a jock who’d set her heart pounding. Which was strange. Muscle-bound men didn’t turn her on, but Peter Bateson had made her panties alarmingly damp.

In her agitated state, she was completely unprepared for what happened next. He shrugged a tunic over his head, thrust his arms through the armholes, and explained, “I thought a visual aid might help us better identify with the thousands of knights faced with the annihilation of the Templar Order by King Philip of France in the fourteenth century.”

Susie gaped at the knight who’d haunted her dreams for weeks, incapable of coherent thought, until Peter said, “The big question is, what happened to the Templars’ account books when the surviving knights supposedly fled La Rochelle by sea? The logs have never been found and my thesis proves neither they nor the so-called treasure still exist.”

Of course. The logs! Now she was awake, it was so stupidly obvious what the knight had meant. She vaulted to her feet and gripped the pew in front of her. “No,” she shouted, “De Norrels has the logs.”

Laurel O’Donnell’s A Knight’s Protection from Treasure the Knight Boxed Set

I’m pleased to introduce the second author in the Treasure the Knight boxed set. Please help me welcome Laurel O’Donnell with A Knight’s Protection

Blurb –

A healer and outcast, Lia discovers a dying Templar knight who entrusts her with an important treasure and elicits her promise to protect it. Kade de Claremont returns home upon news of his mother’s death only to find his father is searching for a mythical treasure. Lia and Kade must join together to keep the treasure from his father, but secrets and trust come between them to sabotage their growing attraction.

Excerpt –

The knight’s old, weathered face was peaceful, his eyes closed. He was just an old man. Kade’s gaze scanned him. A slash mark and red liquid marred the white tunic near his abdomen. Kade was pretty certain this had been the fatal blow. The knight lay in a puddle of blood, the liquid having dripped down his side to pool on the ground. Kade remembered Ralf telling their father that there had been a fight. Could this really be the knight his father was searching for?

And then he remembered his mother’s message from the girl, Lia. ‘Don’t let them find him. They can’t get it.’ He stared at the old man. Was this the man that had caused his mother’s death? Was this the man Mother and Father had argued over? What had Ralf said his name was? De Rolleston. Kade’s fists clenched as anger rolled through him. What was so important about this old knight to cause his mother to stand up to his father? “Did he say anything to you?” he growled.

After a moment of hesitation, Lia answered, “No. He was dead when I found him.”

Frustrated, Kade bent and ran his hands over the knight’s body, waving a few flies away that had started to congregate around the corpse. Perhaps the knight had something that was important, the ‘it’ of his mother’s message. He searched again, slowly. He tucked his hands into the knight’s belt, into his empty scabbard. He removed one of his boots and looked inside.

“What are you looking for?” Lia wondered.

Kade didn’t answer. He had no idea what he was searching for. Maybe there was nothing here. He removed the other boot and looked inside. Kade lifted the knight’s tunic and then the knight’s chainmail. Blood lined the old man’s stomach. The gaping wound had stopped flowing. There was nothing hidden there. He sat back on his heels. “You found him like this?”

“Yes.”

“Was anyone else around? Another knight?” He swiveled around to look at her. “Did you see anyone else?”

She shook her head, her red locks swaying over her shoulders in thick waves.

“Did you try to help him?”

“He was already dead when I found him.”

Kade looked back at the knight and stood. There was nothing on him that might elicit the message from his mother. Whatever reason his father was searching for him so badly, died with the knight.

Kade turned to Lia. The sun shone down through the leaves of the tree, pooling her in a glorious glow of sunlight. His breath caught. Her red hair all but glowed like fire as the sun touched it. Her nose was pert, her lips slightly parted. His gaze was caught by her dress and the nicely rounded portion of her breasts. For a quick moment, his gaze swept her chest and the way the fabric pulled over it. The torso of her dark cotton dress was splattered with a small freckling of black dots. It took a moment for Kade to realize he had seen that type of spatter before, numerous times. From dying knights. Those small dots of blood came from a mouth expulsion, coughing or sneezing of a mortally wounded knight.

Could the spattering have come from Sir de Rolleston? Had he been alive when she found him? What could the old knight have told her to make her lie to him?
