Ramblings of a Lifelong Elvis Fan – Part 69 – Elvis at 81?

[INTRO: I am a die hard, card carrying Elvis fan and have been for as long as I can remember. There is so much about Elvis to love; his incredible singing voice, his generous spirit, his looks (the most gorgeous man ever), his movies (yes, his movies. They make me happy, so critics can just shush), his service in the army, his magical presence on stage, his transcendent charisma, and…I could go on and on. As a matter of fact, on my 50th post, I believe it was, I DID go on and on. I listed 50 things I love about Elvis. It wasn’t difficult. I am an author and I mention Elvis in almost every story I write. I named my son Presley. I was fortunate to see Elvis in concert three times. I have been to Graceland five times… See? I love Elvis. I have been blogging weekly for more than a year, but going forward, I will blog every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month. My life is insanely busy and I found myself missing weeks from time to time. This way, I’m more likely to be consistent. Hopefully, even if you are not an Elvis fan, you appreciate something about him and will find my posts interesting. Feel free to comment. Thank you so much for stopping by!]

Today’s post:

Wow, it’s hard to wrap my mind around the fact that, one week from today, Elvis would be turning 81. Since he died at 42, it’s much easier to picture him eternally youthful. But each year when his birthday rolls around, I can’t help but wonder what he would be like, what he would be doing, had he lived.

His hair dresser, who was also his close friend and confidant, Larry Geller, claims that, shortly before Elvis died, he revealed that he planned to make some changes. According to Larry:

“A new vision for his life was emerging, his attitude was showing signs of renewal. He spoke with me about changing his life outside and in. From new management, to paring down considerably our group, stop touring for a year, go to Hawaii and rest, get off all medications, eat a balanced, proper diet, exercise and meditate, to coming back and find some real dramatic roles and re-enter movies.”

So, maybe that’s what Elvis would have done. Maybe he would have become a well-respected actor in movie roles where he would be taken seriously. I can definitely imagine him still performing. I believe his voice would have held out and he would probably make a few changes to his shows, but would put on spectacular performances.

This is an image that came out last year on his 80th birthday of what experts think he would look like today. What do you think?

hqdefault

What kind of music would he be singing today? He always loved ballads. And gospel music. I think as he aged, he might have focused more on those genres.

dda1f000c14f6e1015c2969c4ec25cab

A couple of tidbits…

On this day in 1959 – Elvis’ BMW was destroyed on Germany’s Autobahn by his father. German newspapers reported that Elvis had died in the accident. Can you imagine the uproar?

Billboard – More than 38 years after his death, Elvis has 5 albums on Billboard’s top 200. And, one in their top 100. No other entertainer, past, present, or future will maintain that kind of popularity.

billboard-d97e-43d3-a528-5fb0af2a9c7a

So, whatever Elvis would be doing today, I am confident he would be doing it well, that he would be loved and adored as much as ever. He would be an amazing father and grandfather. He would likely be performing with his musical daughter and grandchildren.

At least, these are my guesses. What are yours?

Wishing all of you a happy, healthy and wonderful 2016!

EOLS Charity

Elvis was known for his giving heart and charitable work during his lifetime. Lisa Marie and Elvis Presley Enterprises have continued that tradition with their involvement in various charities. In 1984, The Elvis Charitable Foundation was formed. The EPCF created a scholarship fund for students majoring in the arts. The charity also contributes to one of Elvis’ favorite charities, Goodwill Homes, a Memphis facility that provides counseling and services for abused children and their families. The EPCF also assists numerous other charities, especially focusing on arts, education and children’s programs.

All Toby Lawson wants is to go to college to become a teacher and to be free of her alcoholic mother and some painful memories. But when her mother nearly burns the house down, Toby must put her dreams on hold and return home to care for her. The only time she isn’t lonely and miserable is when she’s listening to her heartthrob, Elvis Presley. His music takes her away and helps her escape from everything wrong in her life.

Noah Rivers has always loved Toby, but no matter what he says, she can‘t get past the fact that her drunken mother once kissed him. He soon realizes the true problem lies in Toby’s belief she’s not good enough for him and in her fear she will be just like her mother.

What will it take to prove to her that she deserves to be happy, and that he would give anything to be the man to make her dreams come true?

Tuesday Two-Minute Writing/Promo Tip – Fourteen Handy Twitter Tips

Got two minutes? Then check out this week’s quick tip ~ 14 ways to get noticed on Twitter

Hello and welcome…I am a freelance editor and an editor for The Wild Rose Press, as well as an author. I often struggle with my own writing, and I have found that sometimes, a little reminder of ways to improve the process can be helpful, so, I like to share these moments of brilliance with others :). But, in this busy world of ours, who has time for pages and pages of writing tips? That’s why I’ve condensed mine down to quick flashes you can read in (approximately) two minutes. Enjoy…

TWoMinuteTip

Disclaimer: All of my tips are suggestions, and are only my opinion. And, for the most part, there are exceptions when going against my advice will make your story read better. Take what works, leave the rest.

I thought I would take a break from the writing tips and share some handy Twitter tips I’ve learned along the way. Twitter is one of the most popular and easiest/quickets social media formats. But, with the countless tweets going out every second of every day, it’s difficult to get noticed. Repetition is the key. You might have to send out 20 tweets to get one of them noticed. You don’t want to ‘spam’ and constantly toot your own horn, but there are other ways to increase your odds of getting noticed, and I have listed some tips below to help make that happen, and to help make your Twitter Life a little simpler…

  1. Add fun little pics/symbols to your tweet. Copy and paste from here: http://www.symbols-n-emoticons.com/2013/05/new-symbols-for-facebook-comments.html
  2. When you would like to ask others to tweet for you, rather than composing a tweet for them to copy and paste, provide them a direct link to your tweet that they can simply RT (retweet). The more RT’s your tweet gets, the more noticeable it will be. Here is how: Go to the three dots … (more) beneath your tweet. (Or beneath any tweet you want to share with others) It will bring up options. One is ‘Copy link to tweet’ If you click on that, you can copy the link, which will be a direct link to your tweet, and share it with others who can then retweet you.
  3. Look to the left side of Twitter and find ‘Trending hashtags’ and try to incorporate them naturally into your tweet. It’s advisable to find out what the hashtag really means so that you use it correctly.
  4. Use no more than 2 or 3 hashtags per tweet to prevent your tweet from appearing to be spam.
  5. Since you are limited to 140 characters, you can create an image and add text, so that you can say more than you can in just your tweet. But, you don’t want to overdo it and have lengthy wording in your image. Less is more.  You can add quotes from your book, brief snippets from reviews, tag lines, etc. For example: WITHOUTMERCYteaser#1
  6. Speaking of images, tweets with images are more likely to be noticed. You can easily add text to an image by using sites like this: http://ipiccy.com/ http://www.online-image-editor.com/ (You can also resize your image on this site)
  7. Speaking of resizing…I’ve found the best size to use for Twitter images is 200 x 300.
  8. Use exclamation points, capitalization and quotation marks (but not all in the same tweet), to help get your tweet noticed. But, as always, less is more. I don’t advise doing all of that in the same tweet.  For example, do not do this: “A DYNAMITE READ THAT WILL LEAVE YOU GASPING!!!!” STEPHEN KING’S THE SHINING IS A #MUSTREAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But you could do this: “A dynamite read that will leave you gasping” Stephen King’s THE SHINING is a #MustRead Or A dynamite read that will leave you gasping!!!! Stephen King’s THE SHINING is a #MustRead
  9. If you are searching a hashtag or particular subject and you put the words in the search (or click on the hashtag) to bring up all tweets containing that word or hashtag, be sure to go up toward the top of the page that comes up. You will see a few choices such as ‘top’ and ‘live.’ ‘Top’ is where you will find the most popular tweets containing your search criteria, and ‘live’ should bring up all tweets containing it.
  10. Rather than just tweeting, retweet for others and interact, reply, compliment them.
  11. If you use punctuation in a hashtag, it breaks up the hashtag so that only the first part shows as part of the HT. For example, if I used: #Alicia’sBlog – Only this much would show as a hashtag: #Alicia and ‘sBlog would not show up as part of the HT.
  12. Ask for retweets. You’d be surprised at how many people RT just because you ask.
  13. Create a Hashtag specific to your book (Mine might be #LibertyEmpoweredBook)
  14. You can pin a tweet so that it is the one that always shows up when someone goes to your profile. Just click the … (more) beneath your tweet and the option will come up

Until next time…happy tweeting and Happy New Year!

How to write a novel? That is the question. There are probably as many answers to that question as there are people who ask it.

Wanting to write and actually doing it are two very different things. I am well acquainted with the sometimes grueling process of churning out a story. Over the years, I have tried many methods for creating and completing manuscripts, and have tweaked and honed it down to a workable (for me) process.

Using specific examples from one of my own novels, Without Mercy, I share my method in this mini how to book. The first eight steps actually deal with plotting while the last two are designed to help expand your outline into a well-developed draft. There is no one, perfect way to create a story, but there will be a method, or methods that work for you. I’m not sure if this is the one, but it works for me. Only you can decide if it also works for you. Fingers crossed that it does!

*** Warning – Please do not purchase without reading a sample. (This is solid advice for any book, fiction or non. If you are not intrigued in the sample, you will likely not enjoy the book)

“Ten Moments that Changed My Life” by Diane Burton – PLUS, her new release: “The Case of the Fabulous Fiancé”

I am pleased to host my  author friend, the awesome, talented Diane Burton, on today’s blog.  Diane is sharing the 10 moments that changed her life, as well as  her latest release. Please help me welcome Diane, and be sure to check out her fabulous book, “The Case of the Fabulous Fiance,” an excellent blend of humor and mystery.

10 moments new_MTE1MTUwNTQ0MTg

Thanks for having me here today, Alicia. Preparing for this post, I took many trips down Memory Lane. Side trips, too. Things I hadn’t thought of in years came forward. So many events to choose from. Here’s my top ten.

  1. Accepting my friend’s offer to fix me up with a guy. That blind date led to . . .
  2. . . . marrying the man I loved who became my best friend and the father of . . .
  3. . . . our children. Our daughter, who was an easy baby, came first, followed 13 months later by her brother, who wasn’t (undiagnosed asthma and other health problems).
  4. Hubs’ job changes and moves. At first adventurous, then upsetting, always stressful. But the moves gave us all new opportunities and new friends. A lot of lemonade out of those lemons.
  5. Our daughter’s, very traditional, brought a loving son into our family. Our son’s, on a beach, gave us a wonderful daughter. Those unions gave us . . .
  6. The best de-stressor in the world is rocking a snuggling newborn. No worries about household chores or writing deadlines when visiting. Having fun with them is more important. Teaching them our skills, learning from them.
  7. The release of my first book in 2001. Seeing my name on the cover of a book was such a high. Only to come crashing down with the Twin Towers two weeks later.
  8. Self-publishing. Wow, I actually got money for my books. Every month.
  9. Lingering deaths. Our parents. A blessing when they died. Each time more difficult, until you realize you’re the oldest in the family. Sad that our grandchildren will never know them except through stories and pictures.
  10. Freedom to do what we want, go where and when we want. Realizing that penny pinching paid off.

In my latest release, The Case of the Fabulous Fiancé, the heroine’s top two moments are 1) when The Pops turned over the detective agency to her and 2) the return of her old flame, Nick Palzetti.

zpfile000

Blurb:

Alex O’Hara wants to take her detective agency in a new direction—background checks for potential spouses. She hopes this new case will do the trick when a high-powered executive asks for info on her new boyfriend. Is the man she met on a cruise her Mr. Right or is he too good to be true? On the same day, Alex gets another case—finding a deadbeat dad. And both women want to double her rates so she’ll give them highest priority. She can’t believe her luck. Her finances are on the upswing. If only Nick Palzetti were around to share her good news. He disappeared on Christmas Eve, and she hasn’t heard from him in almost three months. Then no internet and glitchy phones bring everything to a screeching halt.

Excerpt:

I read somewhere that men think about sex ninety-four percent of the time, maybe more. Women were more evolved and thought about other things. Around Nick Palzetti, my evolution took a nose dive. I remembered how good things had been between us. Not my doing, of course. When it came to lovemaking, he was the pro. I still had amateur status. And if I didn’t watch my step, I’d make a fool of myself again.

“Why are you back, Nick? Did you really think I would fall into your arms?” As if I hadn’t done just that.

He perched on the corner of my desk, again, then swung his foot in a lazy manner. “I’d hoped so.”

“Why? I’m not some bimbo you can jump into bed with and then say ‘I’ll be right back’. Right back does not mean no word for over two frelling months.”

I’d just done a “Farscape” marathon, for the third time, so frelling was my word of choice when I really wanted to say the other F-word.

His foot stopped swinging. Every muscle in his body tightened. The effect was fascinating and a little scary. His lips, which had been soft and caressing moments ago, thinned. His face became all sharp edges.

“What do you mean no word?” he asked in a voice that was too soft. Like I said, a little scary.

Today’s post:

First of all, I’d like to say Happy Birthday to my sister and Elvis buddy, Ruth Zimmerman. I can’t think of Elvis without thinking of growing up with her and the many memories we share of Elvis. We still have that connection, and it means the world to me. She now lives 200 miles away, but the other day, she texted me and said she heard “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and started missing me. 😦 She will be here the weekend after Christmas, and I can’t wait to see her. There’s no other bond like the bond of a sister, and ours is that much stronger because of our love for Elvis. (Just to clarify, I have 4 sisters, and I love each of them dearly, and we all love Elvis, but Ruth and I were the closest growing up)

family-scene-with-anita

Elvis was known for his generosity and the time of year that was most obvious was at Christmas. He loved the holiday; loved decorating Graceland and loved giving gifts. He was also a bit of a prankster. His long-time friend, George Klein, loves telling the story of a particular Christmas prank Elvis pulled. Elvis always lavished expensive gifts on his friends and family, and at Christmas, he was known for giving large cash bonuses, cars, etc. One year, Elvis gathered his ‘Memphis Mafia’ to hand out their gifts and gave each of them an envelope. They opened them to find a certificate for a free burger and fries at McDonald’s. Can you imagine the looks on their faces? 🙂 After Elvis had a big laugh, he presented them with their ‘real’ gifts, a sizable bonus.

Did you know that Graceland still uses the Christmas decorations that were used by Elvis? They’ve added to it, of course, but I think it’s awesome that they are still using his decorations. Here are some gorgeous pics of Graceland at Christmas:

LIVING_ROOM_XMAS imag0960lightingcalendarmain

And, it wouldn’t be the Christmas season without sharing my favorite Christmas song. Here on the ’68 Special, Elvis sings it and says it’s his favorite Christmas song, of the ones he recorded. That’s part of his being humble; he wouldn’t say that one of his songs was his ‘favorite’ of all.

Hope everyone has a beautiful, wonderful blessed holiday season. Merry Christmas!

He hasn’t bargained on the fierce desire that burns hotter than the Mojave Desert and combusts every time he gets his boss’s daughter alone. Then there was that neatly trimmed and maintained stubble that gave him a manly, distinguished look. Yep, she couldn’t dismiss the truth, Casey Lowe was captivating on a whole new level, and those electric blue eyes could lure a woman to his bedroom and make her lose her panties before she even knew what was happening. Until it was too late, because Lowe had heartbreaker written all over his tantalizing body.

“Yes, I sleep.” She cast a glance at the chaos her friends had made of his pool. “I just didn’t want to leave this in such a mess.” Once she repaired all the damage, she’d do everything in her power to never cross paths with Lowe again. He was way too tempting and too off-limits for her not to keep her distance.

“Go home, Dani, you’re keeping me awake, and I have court in the morning.”

Just like that, he dismissed her, turned, strolled back into his bedroom, and slid the patio door shut behind him. Less than a minute later all of the lights went out, leaving Dani gawping after him in the dark.

Well, how do you like that? Dissed and dismissed.

HUNTED (FBI Heat Book 1) by Marissa Garner AND a Giveaway

I am thrilled to share the latest release from my friend, Marissa Garner. Marissa and I ‘met’ years ago when I was coordinator for the Finally a Bride contest for unpublished authors. Marissa and I hit it off and remained in touch. She’s a fabulous author, and she has worked hard for many years to realize her dream of becoming a published author. I was editor for her debut novel, The Marriage Trap, through The Wild Rose Press. And now, she has a new book out wiht Grand Central Publishing, and it sounds amazing. Huge congratulations to Marissa!

BLURB:

Hot agents on explosive cases in the FBI Heat series: For San Diego’s elite FBI agents, risking their lives is standard procedure when it comes to capturing the city’s most dangerous criminals—but falling in love is the greatest risk of all.

Catching bad guys in San Diego’s underworld isn’t just FBI Special Agent Ben Alfren’s job, it’s his life. He doesn’t have time for a serious relationship, doesn’t want one either. So when he meets his sexy new neighbor, Amber Jollett, he has nothing more in mind than unwinding with a glass of wine, a romantic walk on the beach…and maybe a hot fling.

But Amber is more than he bargained for. Hunted by an obsessed ex-boyfriend, the fiercely independent nurse chooses fight over flight for the chance at a future with her hot, blue-eyed neighbor. When she gets caught up in Ben’s plans to rescue five kidnapped women, their lives get entangled and their attraction flares into passion. But they’ll learn that in this dangerous game of cat and mouse, real love can save—or doom—them . . .

EXCERPT:

The man in the gray hoodie was watching her. Amber Jollett couldn’t see his face, but he was the right height and build. Even from the opposite street corner, the intensity of his stare bored into her. She shivered despite the sunny morning.

Her focus never wavered as she slid behind two people. The man’s head turned with her movement.

The traffic light changed, and the crowd surged forward. Amber’s hand dug into her purse until it gripped reassuring metal. Weaving between bodies, she moved to the outside edge to put as much distance as possible between her and the man before the other pedestrians passed on the street. With each step, her heart beat faster.

Halfway across, the man reached up, pulled back the hood…and smiled. Straight black hair. Almond-shaped eyes. Asian features.

Not him.

Amber’s knees went weak with relief.

Not him. Not this time.

A car horn blared. She jumped and spun around to find a taxi idling a few feet away, its driver gesturing impatiently for her to get out of the way. Waving an apology, she scurried across the street. She found a spot out of the pedestrian flow next to the corner of a building. She needed a moment to quiet her nerves.

She braced her hands on the knees of her pastel pink nurse’s scrubs, inhaled deep breaths, and released them slowly. Fear began to fade as calm returned.

Damn you, Jeremy Nelson. I want my life back.

Amber grimaced and closed her eyes. It was starting all over again. Two years had passed since she’d broken up with her obsessed boyfriend, but he continued to stalk her. Restraining orders and calls to law enforcement had proved useless. Now she alone was responsible for her safety. She’d lived in Coronado, across the bay from San Diego, for only two months. But two or three months was the amount of time it normally took for Jeremy to find her. From now on, she would have to be on constant alert. The worst part was imagining him wearing every hoodie, hiding in every shadow, or following in every vehicle. Usually, she didn’t wait for an actual sighting—that would be too late. No, she couldn’t hesitate. Once her instincts told her he was closing in, she had to move on. She cringed. How much longer will I be hunted?

Christmas at the Corral – TWRP Spotlight with Debra St. John

I’m pleased to welcome Debra St. John with her Christmas novella, Christmas at The Corral…ONLY $1.99. And, I bet it’s a great read, because Debra’s One Great Night won FIRST place in the 2015 International Digital Awards Contemporary Romance category….way to go, Debra!

519iEIx-2IL._SX310_BO1,204,203,200_

You’re never too old to believe.

Maggie Pearson has no time in her busy life for love, but an immediate attraction draws her to a mysterious stranger at The Corral, a local bar. However, any romantic feelings are ruthlessly squashed when he accuses her of having an affair with his brother.

As a divorce lawyer, Van Rawlings has seen the ugly side of marriage too many times to believe in love. But having gotten off on the wrong foot with Maggie, and genuinely contrite over his faux pas, he offers to help her with an upcoming Christmas charity dinner. The more time they spend together, the more he realizes he’s never met anyone like Maggie, who gives so generously of her time. If you have ever had to take care of a divorce and were blessed enough to have a friend like mine (who works for a law firm as a divorce lawyer Mesa AZ) – you know what a benefit that could be in an otherwise negative situation.

Can Maggie and the magic of the season help Van believe again? In Christmas and in love.

Interesting Tidbit:

After finishing the third (and final) book in my Corral series, I found I wasn’t ready to let The Corral go. I loved the setting I’d created so much I decided I wanted to visit it again. So, I created a spin-off series: Holidays at The Corral. The original characters have mentions, but we don’t ‘see’ them in the stories. The set will have five stories in it. Christmas at The Corral is first. Valentine’s Day at The Corral is coming this winter, and I just submitted the Fourth of July story. Halloween and New Year’s Eve stories will complete the set.

Debra’s Favorite Lines from the story:

He eased her closer and meshed his hips with hers. “Breaking Texas Penal Code Title 9 Section 43.01 line 5 is always interesting.”

“What is Title 9 Section…whatever you said?”

“In a nutshell? Having sex in a public place is an offense against public order and decency.”

“10 Moments that Changed My Life” by Stacy Juba – PLUS, Fooling Around With Cinderella

Please welcome today’s guest, Stacy Juba. She’s sharing the moments that changed her life and her latest release, Fooling Around with Cinderella…

10 Moments That Changed My Life

  1. Receiving a telegram notifying me that I had won a competition and my young adult novel Face-Off would be published by a NY publisher. I was an 18-year-old college student. This success convinced me that I wanted to stick with writing, after a brief break from it.
  2. Accepting a job as editorial assistant at a newspaper where I soon met my future husband. (a sportswriter) One of my tasks was compiling 25 Years Ago Today items from the microfilm, which later inspired me to write my first mystery novel Twenty-Five Years Ago Today. This job also launched my reporting and freelance writing career.
  3. Going on the first date with my future husband. We went to see the movie Volcano and out to dinner, and talked until past 1 a.m.
  4. Saying yes when he proposed to me less than a year later on a trip to Disney World.
  5. The birth of my first child and becoming a mother. This was a huge, and wonderful, life change!
  6. The birth of my second child. Another wonderful moment!
  7. Receiving an offer for Twenty-Five Years Ago Today from Mainly Murder Press. This inspired me to launch a web site and jump full force into the publishing waters.
  8. Having my child diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 6. This changed the lives of everyone in our family, but we learned how strong we are.
  9. Getting a Dexcom continuous glucose monitor (CGM) which alarms for low and high blood sugars and shows whether blood sugar is steady or trending up or down. This was a diabetes game-changer – like flying with radar rather than flying blind.
  10. Going to a theme park and getting the idea for Fooling Around With Cinderella, and ultimately the Storybook Valley series. After years of writing mysteries and young adult, I branched out to chick lit and sweet romance.

Wow, interesting life you’ve led. I can’t imagine what it felt like to learn your child had such a disease. I love that you’ve written so many genres. I have never tried my hand at chick lit, but I think it would be fun. Thank you so much for sharing with us.

And now, check out Stacy’s book. Isn’t that cover fabulous? And, guess what? She’s giving away a free Smashwords or Audible copy of her mystery,  Sink or Swim. Winner will be drawn on December 12th. All you have to do to enter is answer this question from Stacy in the comments:

What is your favorite amusement park ride?

FoolingAroundWithCinderella600x900

Blurb – What happens when the glass slippers pinch Cinderella’s toes? When Jaine Andersen proposes a new marketing role to the local amusement park, general manager Dylan Callahan charms her into filling Cinderella’s glass slippers for the summer. Her reign transforms Jaine’s ordinary life into chaos that would bewilder a fairy godmother. Secretly dating her bad boy boss, running wedding errands for her ungrateful sisters, and defending herself from the park’s resident villain means Jaine needs lots more than a comfy pair of shoes to restore order in her kingdom. First in the Storybook Valley series, a blend of sweet romance, chick lit, and fairy tale fun.

Excerpt  – Jaine Andersen couldn’t stop staring at the framed poster of Cinderella outside the castle. Cylindrical towers and turrets ascended into the sapphire sky, lofty mountains rising in the background. Her hand poised in an elegant wave, Cinderella beamed toward the camera. Ornate script flowed across the right side of the glossy photograph.

“Follow your heart, dream big, and you will find the magic.”
“Okay, Jaine, time to find the magic,” she mumbled, shifting in her seat.
“Interesting. What magic are you hoping to find?” a masculine voice asked behind her.
The kind that erases someone’s memory and lets you start over? Nice going, Jaine.

Squirming, Jaine clutched the black leather portfolio case in her lap as Dylan Callahan closed his office door. He sat down at a battered desk strewn with papers, her eyes tracking his every movement. Forget Cinderella’s stirring quote. Now Jaine couldn’t tear her gaze off the hot guy conducting her interview. The blond hair ruffled across his forehead made him resemble a Venice Beach surfer, not the general manager of a family theme park.

Winter sports seemed his thing though, considering the posters flanking Cinderella. In one, a skier whipped down a powdery slope while the other showed a snowboarder in mid-air. Inspirational words stretched across the bottom of each print: Goal-Setting for the skier and Persistence for the snowboarder.

To nail this interview, Jaine needed to demonstrate her prowess in both areas. And show that she wasn’t some weirdo who talked to herself.

She recovered her voice. “Actually, I’m hoping to help your company find some marketing magic. Uh, thank you for inviting me in.” Jaine toed her navy blue dress shoes into the industrial carpet, hoping he didn’t notice her fidgeting. When the receptionist had escorted her into the office to wait, she hadn’t expected such a good-looking man to join her.

Focus, Jaine. Focus.
