Excerpt:

Patrick crouched behind Lacy in the cargo area behind the driver’s seat. The muzzle of his gun jabbed the nape of her neck. She followed his commands until she neared the end of Center Street. They were headed out of town. Her gut told her not to go. But her gut didn’t have a solution for the weapon aimed at her brain stem. On the other hand, if she did as he said, she would end up dead. Or worse.

As Lacy ferried herself closer to that fate, fear somehow gave way to reason. Why wait? And why give Patrick the reins? If she died, it didn’t have to be at his hand. In fact, it didn’t have to happen at all. Like Roy said—he was only one man. She ran through her options. There was no way she could wrestle his gun away. But car wrecks killed people every day. Especially when they weren’t wearing seat belts. Hers was in place but Patrick was in an open space. Given the right circumstances, he could become a human projectile.

“Turn left at the corner,” Patrick ordered.

It was a four-way stop. A car crossed the intersection opposite her. The driver gave Lacy an appreciative glance as he passed and Patrick jerked her by the hair. “Stop looking at him. I don’t want you looking at men.”

She bit back a cry, refusing to give him the satisfaction of knowing he’d caused her pain. “Do you want me to crash?” Lacy surprised herself with the harsh tone she used, especially given the dread this day had conjured in her mind for so long. But it was as though his abuse made a dam burst inside her causing all the emotion she’d fought so hard to contain to surge over the spillway. It all melded together into cold rage.

“Mother is angry. She expected us weeks ago.”

Lacy let that go. “That was you at the coffee shop, wasn’t it?” She used a tremulous voice. It was important that he believe she was still afraid. And she was—just not of him. What she had decided to do was going to hurt. There was an upside to Patrick coming to Brookton. This was her town. She’d lived here all her life, knew every turn in every road. Lacy flicked on the left blinker and drove through the intersection, anxious fingers tapping the steering wheel.

“How did you know?” Patrick sounded surprised.

“I smelled your cologne.” That was why her nightmares had returned, she finally realized. Just like the night he’d snuck into her apartment. An internal alarm had tried to warn her. Lacy drove west on a two-lane highway. Adrenaline set her stomach on fire. The property she had in mind had been vacant for months. There was a big tree at the side of the road. If she hit it just right …

One advantage of having an older brother was what he had taught her about cars, particularly the rear wheel drive variety. Jack had driven a truck in high school. This would be like the donuts they did in snowy parking lots. Except for the part where she slammed into the tree. Even if it didn’t work, death by tree was preferable to death by Patrick.

The van rounded the bend. Lacy hit the gas and sucked in a breath. She pulled the wheel hard to the right. The van creaked and bounced as it careened over uneven ground. Patrick lost his grip on her seat and slammed into the left wall. The gun clattered to the floor, giving her some measure of relief.

Wow, sounds like an excellent read, TR. And, my daughter’s name is Lacey (with an ‘e’). 🙂

Please tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? Where do you live now? Family? Pets?

My husband and I raise bison near Denver, Colorado. Our miniature beagle, Misty, pretends she’s a shepherd when it’s time to move the bison between pastures. We have four grown children who, like us, lead adventurous lives.

Sounds amazing. I bet you live in a gorgeous area. Where did you get the idea for Prey for Me? Why did you choose this genre (is it something you’ve written in before)? Was there anything unusual, any anecdote about this book, the characters, title, process, etc, you’d like to share? What is the most difficult thing about writing a book? What was the most difficult thing about this one in particular?

Prey For Me was my first book. The title is a play on words that stems from the relationship between my main character and her stalker. I came up with it early on and it stuck. The seeds for the story came from an intense dream I had. I wrote it in my journal. The motivation to move forward with it came from an impending change in my life. My husband was going to start commuting to work out of state and I knew I would need something to occupy me so I didn’t start binging or get addicted to late night TV. So, why not try my hand at writing?

I wouldn’t exactly say I chose romantic suspense so much as it chose me. The story idea came to me and wouldn’t leave me alone. The scenes in my head left me no choice but romantic suspense. I enjoy writing this genre because I’m a suspense junkie and a romance buff. It’s like peanut butter and chocolate! What’s not to like?

I’m a research geek. While working on Prey For Me, I interviewed several people who have medical knowledge beyond my own. That said, nothing is the same as real life experience. In one scene, my main female character is dehydrated. While I was polishing that scene, my son became dehydrated after a long day at an amusement park. He was unable to drive safely so his friends brought him home so I could take him to the ER. While I was very concerned about his condition, the trip there was rather entertaining and highly informative as to how dehydration can affect people. Suffice to say, I thought he was high. So did the docs…until they saw how he came back after some IV fluids and got his blood work back.

The biggest challenge I faced was not having written a novel before. In truth, I’d never written even a short story. I had done a lot of business writing and it always came easy, but the idea of penning (or keyboarding) an entire novel was daunting. I relied on a critique group to help me see the flaws in the story and the weaknesses in my writing. Their input was invaluable. Making it to THE END and getting strong reviews from readers boosted my confidence.

Your debut novel with no past experience? I’m impressed! Do you have another occupation, other than writer? If so, what is it and do you like it?

I do hair for weddings and special events. It’s a lot of fun and gives me some great writing fodder.

What was your first job?

I cared for an elderly spinster who lived all alone in a large mansion. There was a tiger skin on top of her grand piano. Her family was a founding family in our town and I was fascinated by her personal and family history.

Fascinating! You’ve had some great experiences. What do you want readers to come away with after they read Prey For Me?

An appetite for more of my books!

Ha, that’s excellent! What genre have you never written that you’d like to write?

I think I have at least one literary fiction book waiting its turn to be written by me.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

They come from my imagination but I base some of their characteristics on people I have met or have interviewed.

Who is the most famous person you have ever met?

Okay, this is going to date me… When we lived in LA, we were friends with Leroy Smith. Now, it’s not likely you know who that is, but he used to be a pro basketball player in the European league. He told us he’d played ball with Michael Jordan in college and that they were very good friends. This was back when Michael was a household name. He told us about a time when Michael was just on the cusp of his fame; They were at a McDonalds and one of the workers said, “Are you Michael Jordan?” Michael replied, No, I’m Leroy Smith,” so he could get out of there easily. To be honest, we thought Leroy had embellished his story. Several weeks later, we were watching the Chicago Bulls playing on TV and during halftime, they played an interview with Michael and Leroy where Michael told the exact same story! Here’s Leroy’s Wikipedia page that tells a lot about their relatnonship: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvest_Smith We had a good laugh with Roy the next time we saw him.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

I don’t have just one favorite, but a new-to-me author whose writing really draws me in is Dennis LeHane. I recently read his book, Moonlight Mile and couldn’t put it down. The book was set in Boston, a city I wanted to move to after high school (though I ended up in California).

What really strikes me about his writing is the level of detail he brings into the setting without making me yawn and want to skip pages. Okay, there’s also the fact that his suspense gripped me by the throat and didn’t let go. No formulaic contrivances needed, just fresh story with interesting plot twists. A truly creative writer.

I agree…I adore him!! If you haven’t read the entire Patrick Kenzie series, then you’re missing out. Check out A Drink Before the War, then keep reading from there. Trust me! 🙂 Thanks so much for joining us today, TR.

TR’s question for readers: What keeps you in a story?

Constance Bretes – Blue As Sapphires

I’d like to welcome fellow AHA author, Constance Bretes, who is sharing a new release, and a sobering topic…

On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. … 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of [some form of] physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime. (Statistics – National Coalition Against Domestic Violence)

Blue As Sapphires was born from my love of sapphire digging, and gold panning in the beautiful Gem Mountains and Rock Creek River that runs through Philipsburg, Montana. Another issue that I’m passionate about is doing away with domestic abuse. I took the two subjects and combined them into a story that made Marissa determined to survive and overcome her ex-husband’s physical and emotional abuse, and the sheriff, Riley McCade, who is determined to love and protect her.

ONLY 99 CENTS!!

Blurb:

Escaping from her abusive ex-husband, Marissa Simpson came back to her hometown to start over. She had no intention of getting involved with another man, or with the community she left behind all those years ago. That is, until Riley McCade showed up.

Riley was the Sheriff of Granite County and he commanded a work force of fifteen deputies. He loved his community and went out of his way to protect and serve. When he met up with Marissa, he was bound and determined to get to know her even though she said she wasn’t interested.

The more he got to know her, the more he learned of her past. Could he protect her and earn her love?

Snippet:

Marissa laid back and wrapped her arms around Riley’s neck. She brought her lips to within an inch of his. She stared into his eyes and noticed how tender they looked. She moved in a little more, and her lips met his. He moved his mouth over hers, devouring it. While the fireworks were going off in the sky, Marissa felt her own fireworks. His kiss sent a shock wave through her entire body. Riley guided Marissa so she was on her back and he was partially on her. His Stetson concealed their faces. They continued to kiss and touch, looking lovingly at each other, and then kiss again.

The fireworks lasted for fifteen minutes, and suddenly a flashlight shone on them and voices interrupted them. Three firefighters stood in front of them singing a line from Burning Love.

Riley and Marissa quickly broke apart.

“What the hell?” Riley said. A hint of irritation laced his voice. He abruptly stood up, grabbed Marissa’s hand, and pulled her up.

“We were told that there was sparks on the ground, and we were asked to put it out,” Mitch said, laughing.

“Just who the hell told you that?” Riley asked.

“Heidi,” John, second firefighter, said with an amused smile on his face.

Riley and Marissa shot Heidi a glance.

“We can see that the sparks have been put out so we’ll head back to the truck.” Mitch smiled even wider.

Dave and Cindy stood off to the side chuckling. Someone from the crowd that had gathered around them asked, “Hey, Sheriff, got a new girlfriend?” Ripples of laughter rang through the crowd.

Marissa continued to glare at Heidi. She couldn’t believe her friend would do something like that. As the party broke up, Marissa said to Heidi, “We will talk later.”

Snippet A:

Even though buried, her memories continued to breathe under the mountain of life she’d lived. Dare she even speak of them? Their place of residence had become an unmarked grave in her history. Her family had a right to know, after everything that had happened. His world was dark and full of shadows; where would she begin? For over 25 years she had told no one. Now she was being drawn back into his world. It was a time she wanted to forget. The tie that had been bound to her so tightly was about to be broken.

Snippet B:

“It really is good to see you.” His eyes flickered upwards and there it was bam right between her eyes– delight, this time unmasked and blatant. She felt ashamed, a double-dealer. It was not supposed to be like this. It was supposed to be crisp white linen, clear blue cloudless skies. Instead it was clandestine iron ore that left a stain on your hands. Anne of Green Gables would not approve. She sat hands clasped together unable to make eye contact. It would only take a split second for Tony to understand.

Snippet C:

Well that was very bold of me wasn’t it, she thought, not sure where this confident version of herself had come from. Maybe it was the shopping, maybe the shopping made her bold! It was a type of therapy after all! ‘As long as I’m not intruding?’ ‘No no, please intrude away, intrude as much as you like… I mean….’ Stuttering and blushing again, the man must think I’m a bloody moron. Thankfully there was no evidence of the oversized biscuit…at least he won’t think I’m a glutton as well, that’s one blessing.

Book 2:

Finders Keepers by J.J. DiBenedetto

Snippet A:

“What do you want me to do? I had one idea, and it’s a good idea but you keep screaming at me not to do it, so tell me what you do want!” What Jane wanted was for Sheryl to move over and let her take the wheel, but that wasn’t exactly a viable option at the moment. As a plan B, the only thing she could think of was the next exit. A couple of minutes ago, it had been twenty kilometers away, but at their current speed, surely they’d covered at least half that distance.

Snippet B:

This was a bad idea. How many horror movies had she seen in her life? Was going down into the basement ever a good idea, in any of them? Did it ever end well? Jane knew the answers, but she went down the stairs all the same. She tried to step softly, but they creaked anyway. Whoever was down there had to know they were coming. She continued down regardless, and when she got to the bottom, she called out, “Tishy?”

Snippet C:

“You know that expression ‘if looks could kill’ really is just an expression, right? You can stare at me like that all night if you want, but I’m not changing my mind.” When she’d told him her new plan, Jane had worried, just for a moment or two, that Tom might try to grab the wheel or do something else equally drastic. She wasn’t sure what would have happened if he had; fighting for control of the car with a hostile passenger had not come up in her Driver’s Ed classes back in high school.

Book 3:

Decades of Love by Sin City Romance Writers (Lynn Crain is one of them.)

Snippet A:

Hell, who was she kidding? Once she got back, her life would be anything but well-ordered as she’d be unique, being someone who had successfully time-travelled. Unfortunately, that would all be kept within the confines of the Time Travel Bureau as the world could never know how they were kept safe from the Desmond Draeggers of the world. They’d even made her sign a non-disclosure document before MI6 would let her step inside their damn time travel device.

Snippet B:

“That’s all for now and it’s most of what I know. But we all share the same concerns as I’m sure you have. Javed has the specifics on our next contact. And please don’t get mad at me for the unconventional way I have instructed him to give those orders to you. It was necessary.” I turned to look at him suspiciously. “What is she talking about?”

Snippet C:

She stared at him and again noticed his eyes. Like the sky in Nevada – blue, deep, and endless. She could watch them all day, but the force of his hand nearly knocked her on her ass. She blinked several times and remembered where she was. Her throat constricted, and it was everything she could do not to puke. Her eyes darted around her for a moment or two, as her mind rearranged the morning into the right scenario. The slap was probably the best thing he could have done for her.

*** The book is on pre-order right now for an incredible $0.99. We plan to do giveaways the week of release (Feb 28 through March 6.) More details can be found on the Sin City Romance Writers Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/SinCityRomanceWriters/

Interview with Author Dena Garson ~ NEW RELEASE ~ #Giveaway

Please help me welcome Dena Garson, who is sharing her new release and a great interview!

Thank you for joining me, Dena. Please tell us a little about yourself, where are you from? Where do you live now? Family? Pets?

I’m Dena Garson. I am a Process Improvement Consultant by day and a writer by night (or whenever I can fit it in!). I have two teenage boys at home as well as an extremely loyal Labrador and two fuzzy jerks (they’re actually kittens, brothers, but they get into so much stuff that I’ve relabeled them). We live in Northeastern Oklahoma.

What was the most difficult thing about writing WHEN ASH REMAINS?

The most difficult thing about writing this book was blending historical facts, with paranormal elements, with Native American lore, and NOT drag in a bunch of stereotypes. It helps that I am part Choctaw and live in the Cherokee Nation, so I’ve seen and studied much of the local culture. I just hope I didn’t step on any toes with anything I put in my book.

Do you collect anything?

I have a sizable collection of rubber ducks. My entire bathtub rim and the window sill above it are covered.

What’s the main thing that you could get rid of in your life that would give you more writing time?

LOL – cleaning the house. I just need a Jetsons style house with little robots that come out periodically and do all the cleaning for me.

What is your most prized material possession? Why?

My grandmother’s dinner ring. Because of all the memories I have of her – some of which include me sitting next to her in church and being allowed to wear it.

What do you want your tombstone to say?

She lived and she loved with everything she had.

If you could spend time with a character from your book, whom would it be? And what would you do during that day? (PG-13 please 🙂 )

I’d love to spend time with Ahyoka, the heroine in When Ash Remains. She has the ability to hear voices of the spirits of the land, the elements, and the ancestors. I just think that we could learn so much if we knew what they were saying.

What is the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?

Actually, the toughest criticism I’ve received came from my mother. She thought I used too many “trashy words” in my early books. Of course those books were written for Ellora’s Cave, therefore a bit more steamy than she cares for but my more recent books she approves of.

The best compliment (NOTE: every good review is great and I treasure them all!) that I hang on to even now came from my writing mentor, Ms. Peggy – she told me multiple times that I was a “good little writer.” I can still hear her telling me that.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

My characters mostly come from my imagination – they just show up. But I do introduce side characters from time to time that are based on people I know. For example, my writing mentor, Ms. Peggy, made a cameo appearance in Ghostly Persuasion. I figure she’ll show up again in future books – or her personality will anyway.

What do your friends and family think of your writing?

My mother is tickled pink. I think my boys are proud that their mom is a writer but know I write books they won’t care about. Most of my friends think it’s cool – but a few are shocked I write mushy, sexy stuff. Of course my bestie is thrilled she gets free books in advance. LOL

What character in your book are you least likely to get along with?

Ahyoka’s chief. I thought he was a pompous ass.

Who is the most famous person you have ever met?

If I exclude all the authors I’ve met it would probably be Lee Majors. I was about 5 years old at the time but I still remember it!!

How did you come up with the title?

There’s a scene in the book where Kajika, the hero, is speaking to the elder shaman. I took the title from something he says to Kajika. It speaks to a person’s life’s purpose.

Tell us your favorite…

Movie – I can’t pick just one!! Harry Potter (all of them), Thor, Suicide Squad, Sherlock Holmes (RDJ’s), anything with Keanu Reeves

Music – hard rock; probably Halestorm right now

Place you’ve visited – Florida Keys

Place you’d like to visit – UK

TV show from childhood – Scooby Doo

TV show from adulthood – Dr. Who

Food – homemade mashed potatoes

Sports team – Dallas Cowboys

Which do you prefer: Board games/card games or television? Card games

Thank you so much…I enjoyed getting to know you. Now, tell us a little about your book…

519lcauqf1l

Short Blurb:

Destiny drives us all.

Kajika went in search of his cousin’s killer. What he found was so much more.

Ahyoka had always been treated as an outsider. When she met Kajika, she yearned to belong to him, body and soul.

Snippet A

He opened the door and strode in. She had the radio on and he knew she couldn’t hear him. He leaned against the wall in the hallway at the epicenter of the apartment and waited. She wouldn’t be able to go anywhere without seeing him. Within a minute she emerged from her bedroom wearing a skimpy robe while reading the label on a jar. Although he hadn’t moved, it was like she felt his presence and looked up. Everything froze. Her eyes widened. Then she screamed, threw the jar at him.

Snippet B

“Something tells me I should be worried about a chick who carries duct tape in her trunk.” She suddenly realized how bad that sounded and laughed too. Nothing about this day was going right. “I have it for emergencies, not to tie up my captives.” He crossed his arms, causing his shirt to tighten on his biceps and drawing her eye to a tattoo peeking out. He smiled and added, “Maybe I should take your picture to let my friends know who I’m with in case I disappear.” Oh, man. He was cute. She didn’t want him to be cute.

His breathing was slightly faster than normal. At least he had the excuse of lifting weights. All she’d done was walk down the stairs and ogle him. He bent and she shivered as his body lowered. He grabbed the basket and held it to the side. She tilted her face up. He stared into her eyes, but then his gaze traveled over her whole face, landing on her mouth. The look was so intense that she could almost feel the phantom pressure on her lips.

Snippet A

Adrian straightened, his desire to leave evaporating despite the awkward situation. The glazenwright was beautiful, with a delicate oval face, high cheekbones and a small, straight nose. He knew he was staring, but didn’t want to stop. There was something compelling about this woman aside from her lovely face, which was all he could see. Her heavy, serviceable black cloak and headdress concealed the rest. Her expression captured him. Not the simpering moue of court women, nor the lustful gleam of barmaids or the respectful, downcast eyes of servants. She radiated a quiet confidence he found enticing.

Snippet B

He and his eight men sat alert, deep enough in the forest to avoid being seen while maintaining a clear view of the road through leafless branches. Nine armed men could frighten travelers. ‘Twas best to let them pass. Each man watched, each horse sinking deeper into chilling mire as a mud-covered, black palfrey plodded over the rise in the road, its long mane whipping in the frigid winds. “No rider,” Martin, the scout, murmured. “Look again,” Nicholas replied. At first he too had thought the horse was riderless. Now he could see a woman collapsed on the animal’s back.

Snippet C

“It’s a bit late for such a warning.” Her smooth skin was ashen. A ribbon held thick auburn hair off her oval face, but a few long waves tumbled over her shoulders to tease his hands. She drew herself up as if gathering her composure. Many women would’ve collapsed by now, after receiving and helping a wounded stranger, then hiding him from soldiers who could return at any moment. He admired her strength of will. And her fine features, straight brows framing those golden eyes he couldn’t seem to look away from, her delicate nose and lips. Stunning, but thin.

Snippet A:

Finally, she forced her eyes open and found herself staring at a water-stained ceiling. When she turned her head to the left, she saw a window covered by thick drapes with a sliver of light showing between the panels. She scowled. Where was she?

“You’re awake.”

She gasped. The voice came from her right. It was coarse, deep and staticy, as if filtered through a speaker. She turned her head toward the voice and knew immediately she was in trouble. If she weren’t in trouble, the man sitting next to the bed probably wouldn’t be wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a Friday the 13th Jason Voorhees hockey mask.

Snippet B:

She lifted her lashes, staring up at him, wanting to lose herself in his glittering blue gaze. Wanting to feel his hands on her body…his full, sensual lips on hers. Wanting to be swept away in whatever madness this was. It felt so strange, yet at the same time, exhilarating, compelling, irresistible…dangerous.

Yes, dangerous. Gulping in a breath, she stepped back. His touch fell away, breaking the strange hold he had on her.

“You! It was you there that night. In the alley…” Her breath came in short gasps as the odd yearning was replaced by fear. “Then again, at the hospital.” She shot her gaze around the room. “Where’s the other one? The blond guy? Who the hell are you?”

Snippet C:

Eyes tightly closed, she pressed her back to the desk, praying the robbers hadn’t heard her scream. I’m going to die…I’ll never see Emma again… Panic built in her chest, and her breathing sped up. I can’t die, please don’t let me die…

No! She would not die. She would survive. She had to.

She tried not to look again, but her gaze was drawn against her will. Sophie’s body lay half-in, half-out of the chair. Her eyes were open. Blood was smeared on her pale yellow blouse. A shudder raced over China’s skin.

A Demon’s Witch by Tena Stetler #TWRP

Fellow AHA Author Tena Stetler is sharing about her Paranormal Romance, A Demon’s Witch

tena7-300-2

Best selling author, Tena Stetler, uses her over-active imagination to spin tales of paranormal romance/suspense and cozy mysteries. Her spicy romances spin the adventures of magical kick-ass women and mystical alpha males that dare to love them. From demons to faeries and witches to vampires her intriguing characters take roads less traveled to draw you into exciting tales that  engage the imagination and warm the heart.

51oxj6gawvl-_sy346_

Tena’s Inspiration for A Demon’s Witch:

A Demon’s Witch was my debut novel and has remained close to my heart. A Demon’s Witch hit the market and garnered best seller status. It earned The Romantic Reviews Readers Choice 2016 Nominee in the paranormal romance category.   I love talking about this story.

The ideas begin to percolate as I sat in a beauty salon listening to the chatter from other customers. One woman swore she’d been approached by a vampire want-to-be.

This got me to thinking, which is scary in and of itself. What if the hairdresser was an alpha male, Demon Overlord of the Western Hemisphere that owned a multi-species salon in Washington DC? Enter a powerful witch, whose beauty caught the eye of the demon on a rainy day when she rushed into his salon. Now, unbeknownst to him, she is not any ordinary witch, but the little sister of the demon’s enforcer. Now you have a romance with unbelievable complications.

The story became a series, but the other planned books in the series took a strange turn when the majority of readers and reviewers clamored for the enforcer, Tristian’s story to be next in line. I’d never considered writing a book on the witch’s brother, the demon’s enforcer. But after mulling it over for several months and publishing three unrelated books,

I am excited to announce A Warlock’s Secrets (Tristian’s story) is awaiting cover art and will be published spring 2017. So please watch for it!

I hope you enjoy my blurb and peek into A Demon’s Witch:

Keeping a lid on all the paranormal beings inhabiting Washington D.C., is a daunting job. Bruce, a six hundred year old demon and the Territory Overlord of the Western Hemisphere, keeps his finger on the pulse of DC’s power players through the activities at his highly successful Wycked Hair Salon. His movie star good looks and body builder physique keeps his dance card full and the rumor mills running.  Within these walls, his anonymity is safe, mostly.

Bruce’s world spins out of control when Angelique, a pint size, gorgeous witch, with an attitude breezes through the doors of his salon. She is the younger sister of Tristian, Bruce’s long time trusted enforcer, whose professional skills are second to none. Tristian is furious at the relationship between Bruce and Angelique, a dangerous situation, but something darker threatens them all. Will undeniable attraction between demon and witch tear their worlds apart?

Excerpt:

At two in the morning he awoke feeling her restlessness, listening he heard her soft sobs. He pulled on his black silk lounge pants and grabbed the robe from the foot of his bed. Padding silently in his bare feet down the hall, he paused at her bedroom door just as her anguished scream filled the room. He was at the side of her bed a second later. Gathering her onto his lap, he held her unyielding body to his until her flailing limbs quieted and her troubled violet eyes opened. Cognizant of where she was now and with whom, she flung her arms around his neck and clung tight as shivers racked her slight frame.

Megan came running from the other wing of the house where the staff lived during the week. “Is everything all right?” She peeked inside Angie’s bedroom door.

“Just a nightmare, nothing to worry about. She’s awake now.

“Oh no my Lord,” Megan said in a low frantic whisper.

“Don’t call me that,” he growled, his amber eyes tinged with orange glowed in the dark room.

“Sorry. There’s something dark and dangerous chasing that one.” She nodded in Angie’s direction. “It’s not of this world.”

He lowered his voice and spoke kindly. “Go back to bed, I’ve got this handled.” He paused for a beat exhaling slowly. “For now.”

Tuesday Two-Minute Writing Tip – Describing Your Point of View Character

Got two minutes? Then check out this week’s quick tip ~ How to describe a character in his or her POV without using a mirror…

Hello and welcome…I am a freelance editor and an editor for The Wild Rose Press, as well as an author. I often struggle with my own writing, and I have found that sometimes, a little reminder of ways to improve the process can be helpful, so, I like to share these moments of brilliance with others :). But, in this busy world of ours, who has time for pages and pages of writing tips? That’s why I’ve condensed mine down to quick flashes you can read in (approximately) two minutes. Enjoy…

TWoMinuteTip

Disclaimer: All of my tips are suggestions, and are only my opinion. And, for the most part, there are exceptions when going against my advice will make your story read better. Take what works, leave the rest.

It’s rather difficult to describe a character, when you are in that character’s Point of View.  It’s tempting to have a character look in a mirror and describe what they see, or just describe themselves in a way that really isn’t natural, such as:

(We’re in Sally’s POV):

“Sally brushed back her silky blonde hair, which hung down her back in luxurious waves. Her gorgeous emerald eyes filled with tears as her curvaceous body settled onto the sofa.”

Doesn’t really work, does it? The character seems vain and self-absorbed.

Here are a few suggestions/ideas to get you through the tricky task of POV character description:

Have the character think of themselves in comparison to another:

She’d always envied her sister’s sleek blonde hair. Her own dark unruly curls gave her the perpetual appearance of having just climbed out of bed.

Have another character comment on their looks:

“Your eyes are not really blue, and not really green…more a combination of the two, like a Caribbean sea. I could look into them for hours.”

In action, which can be done several ways:

She pushed her glasses further up her nose.

She slid her jeans on over her hips, wishing she had a little more ‘hip’ to fill them out.

He rubbed his hands over the day’s worth of whiskers covering his jaw.

He ducked his head under the doorframe and stepped into the room.

Her hand looked so small wrapped in his.

She twisted her long hair into a knot on top of her head.

I quickly applied eyeliner, grateful I’d inherited my mother’s complexion so I could get by with little make up.

Introspection:

People think because I’m small, I’m a pushover.

I rolled my eyes. Another man who couldn’t see past the blonde hair and blue eyes to the intelligent woman beneath.

It wouldn’t be the first time someone was intimidated by his size.

Don’t describe while you’re in that character’s POV. Wait and let another character describe them when you are in the other character’s POV

Describe sparingly. You need very little description, and you can sprinkle it throughout when it can come naturally, rather than providing an entire list of features all at once. This way you can avoid author intrusion, or having a self-absorbed, egotistical character.

Any tricks you use that you’d like to share?

Until next time…Happy Writing!

How to write a novel? That is the question. There are probably as many answers to that question as there are people who ask it.

Wanting to write and actually doing it are two very different things. I am well acquainted with the sometimes grueling process of churning out a story. Over the years, I have tried many methods for creating and completing manuscripts, and have tweaked and honed it down to a workable (for me) process.

Using specific examples from one of my own novels, Without Mercy, I share my method in this mini how to book. The first eight steps actually deal with plotting while the last two are designed to help expand your outline into a well-developed draft. There is no one, perfect way to create a story, but there will be a method, or methods that work for you. I’m not sure if this is the one, but it works for me. Only you can decide if it also works for you. Fingers crossed that it does!

*** Warning – Please do not purchase without reading a sample. (This is solid advice for any book, fiction or non. If you are not intrigued in the sample, you will likely not enjoy the book)

Snippet A:

When he walked through the waiting room he saw the woman in the cat costume jump out of her seat and begin walking toward him, almost as if she’d been waiting for him. Ignoring her, he kept walking. “Excuse me,” she called. He stopped and turned, part of him annoyed as he wondered what she wanted with him now, and another part—a very specific part—trying not to notice how sexy she looked in her black cat costume. She’s bad luck, he told himself, just like any other black cat.

Snippet B:

“Wait a minute,” Faye said. “This guy you’re so looking forward to seeing at your reunion. He’s an UNDERTAKER?” “Yes…what’s wrong with that?” “What’s wrong with that? Come on, Robin. If you don’t care where your man’s hands have been, you might as well start dating a gynecologist. They make a lot more money.” “It’s a decent, honest living. Besides, before you call someone else’s profession disgusting, Faye, maybe you should look at your own. You spend all day treating skin ulcers and wounds. Is Godfrey ever reluctant to touch you because of where YOUR hands have been?”

Snippet C:

“Part of me can’t believe you’re that little girl I used to help teach English to,” he murmured. She raised her chin in defiance. “I haven’t been a child for a long time, Devin. I’m a woman now.” He raised her hand to his lips. “Yes,” he said. “And I’m a man. We’re obviously attracted to each other. What do you suppose we should do about that?” She didn’t waver. Instead, her eyes firmly locked with his, she replied, “The same thing men and women who are attracted to each other have been doing since the beginning of time.”

Snippet A:

For a moment, he mulled if anything over one hundred years was old for a Centaur, and if that were the reason for his bedtime boredom. Doubtful. As long as my heart keeps beating, I’ll never be too old for this. Maybe bored, but never too old. So, why did life lose its luster for him? Moreover, when? As he pounded into Adelpha, Aleksander reminded himself he’d been raised to be a warrior. He prided himself at having worked into his position of Head Palace Guard. If not a soldier for Queen Savella, then what? Gigolo?

Snippet B

Tilting her head with care, he sucked in a breath and froze. “What is it? Snake bite?” Samuel raised the brass lantern higher and leaned over for a better view. Rhycious tapped his thumb against her neck. Designs a few shades darker than her natural color marred the creamy complexion. The millennia old skin formation carved its way into his painful memories. It started behind her ear, an inch wide at the hairline, and extended to the other side. The words choked out of him. There was no use trying to hide his revulsion. “Wood Nymph.”

Snippet C

Hunters. She was sure of it. Without their long, scoped rifles and camouflage clothing, they were hard to pick out. Nevertheless, those men monitored her closely and it gnawed at her sense of security. Abelia needed to make a getaway—the sooner, the better. In broad daylight, there was nowhere to shimmer without running the risk of someone seeing her. People filled the park, the sidewalks. Humans were everywhere. “You’re okay.” She gasped in surprise, and her gaze flew to his. As much as she’d like to believe this handsome male, she was definitely not all right.

Snippet A:

Brendon came to a halt and his whole body tensed as he stared further down the crowded corridor. “You were right about Gar showing up.” The entire time she’d known him, absolutely nothing seemed to faze her apartment-invading locust. She’d screamed and threatened him a thousand times, and at best, he would make her a cup of tea. At worst, he’d laugh at her. Yet today, the mere sight of his brother in the distance stressed him.

Snippet B:

Carrie turned and faced him. “Trent, I don’t want you to buy my clothes!” He smiled as if he thought her protest silly. “I don’t mind. I buy women things all the time, far more expensive than a dress.” “But I mind. My boss shouldn’t buy me clothes.” With a heavy sigh, he shrugged. “Okay, you can pay for it.” God! Why couldn’t she get through to him? “That’s my point. I probably can’t afford a hair comb in this shop.” He grimaced. “Yeah, avoid those. One of them costs almost as much as my car.”

Snippet C:

Upon settling down on the toilet, she noticed the floor to ceiling mirror facing her and screamed at the sight of the creature within in it. Short black hair spouted about its head, black circles surrounded both eyes and swirls of black flowed down the cheeks. Black lips stretched in horror as if in a nightmare. Pulling up her pants, she moved closer to the mirror. She was a ghoul, an honest to God ghoul!

Bio:

Award winning author, Casi McLean, pens novels to stir the soul with romance, suspense, and a sprinkle of magic. Her writing crosses genres from ethereal, captivating shorts with eerie twist endings to believable time slips, mystical plots, and sensual romantic suspense. Beneath The Lake won the 2016 Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence for BEST Romantic Suspense.

Her stories entwine strong, believable heroines with delicious hot heroes to tempt the deepest desires then fans the flames, sweeping readers into their innermost romantic fantasies. Ms. McLean weaves exceptional romantic mystery with suspenseful settings and lovable characters you’ll devour. You’ll see, hear, and feel the magical eeriness of one fateful night. You’ll swear her time travel could happen, be mystified by her other worldly images, and feel heat of romantic suspense, but most of all you’ll want more.

Casi’s Inspiration For Beneath The Lake:

I love to talk about my, Beneath The Lake, and the eerie lake lore that inspired my muse. A town that time forgot––the history and creepy stories attached to a rural area that sleeps beneath Atlanta’s famous man-made lake, Sidney Lanier, fascinated me. Homes, churches and businesses still linger beneath the surface. The moonshiners of the 1940’s added built-in suspense, and the birth of NASCAR. Looper Speedway, a half-mile dirt track where bootleggers competed with their souped-up cars, exposed its cement stands in a recent draught.

There’s a Lady of the Lake who haunts the ghost town too––the spine-chilling lore is the basis for book three in my Beneath The Lake series, Between The Shadows. Some say she lures victims to her watery grave. The truth is, swimmers get trapped among the deadfall of sheered-off trees and town remains. Even expert divers get tangled beneath the murky surface, hence the lake’s unnerving label: Lanier never gives up its dead. The inspiration swirled in my mind, begging for a story to be told. What a perfect setting for my romantic time-slip suspense series.

Why time-slip? Ever since my childhood imagination discovered Madeleine L’Engles, A Wrinkle In Time, the idea of time travel intrigued me. And Lake Lanier, a man-made lake with mesmerizing history, presented a plausible theory. What if the excavation explosions triggered a seismic shift? Given enough energy, could the blasts rip a portal into a different dimension or a crack in time? The possibilities were endless.

The birth of Lacey Montgomery evolved through my young adult love for Jude Deveraux’s A Knight In Shining Armor. The time-slip novel introduced her endearing Montgomery family. I hope my books honor her inspiration. My high school friend, Hilary Johnson, inspired the persona of my heroine, Lacey Montgomery. A lawyer, discouraged with defending criminals, yearned to help honest people in trouble. Some of Hillary’s finer qualities became part of Lacey––the dysfunctional relationships came from my own personal experiences. LOL. Once these elements entwined, Beneath The Lake blossomed with an energy and life of its own.

The sequel, Beyond The Mist, picks up where the first story ends incorporating two minor characters as the new hero and heroine. Beyond The Mist is complete, in editing, and will be published in a few months.

Blurb –

A ghost town submerged beneath Atlanta’s famous man-made Lake Lanier reportedly lures victims to a watery grave. But when Lacey Montgomery’s car spins out of control and hurtles into the depths of the icy water, she awakens in the arms of a stranger, in a town she’s never heard of–34 years before she was born.

When the 2012 lawyer tangles with a 1949 hunk, fire and ice swirl into a stream of sweltering desire. Bobby Reynolds is smitten the moment the storm-ravaged woman opens her eyes and, despite adamant protest, Lacey falls in love with a town destined for extinction, and the man who vows to save his legacy.

Threatened by a nefarious stalker, the wrath of bootleggers, and twists of fate, Lacey must find the key to a mysterious portal before time rips the lovers apart, leaving their star-crossed spirits to wander forever through a ghost town buried beneath the lake.

Excerpt:

Lake Lanier, Georgia—June 2011

A final thud hurled him backward, flailing through brush and thickets like a rag doll. Grasping at anything to break momentum, Rob’s hand clung to a branch wedged into the face of the precipice. Spiny splinters sliced his skin. Blood oozed and trickled into his palms, and one by one, his fingers slowly slipped.

A sharp crack echoed through the silence of the ravine as the bough succumbed to his weight. He plummeted into free-fall. Clenching his eyes, he drew in a deep breath, terrified of the pain, the mauling that waited on the jagged rocks below.

When icy water broke his fall, the chill kept him from losing consciousness. He spun, straining to see, but darkness enveloped him. Soggy clothing pulled him deeper—deeper into the murky, fathomless depths. He wrestled to squirm free from the waterlogged jacket dragging him down to a watery grave, watched the coat disappear into black obscurity. Panic gripped his stomach, or was it death that snaked around his chest, squeezing, squeezing, squeezing the air, the life from his body? Lack of oxygen burned his lungs, beckoning surrender, and a shard of rage pierced his gut as reality set in. He lunged upward with one last thrust and burst from the water’s deadly grip, gasping for air. A gurgling howl spewed from the depths of his soul and echoed into silence.

Sunlight shimmered across a smooth, indigo lake, but aside from the slight ripples of his own paddling, nothing but stillness surrounded him. He floated toward the shore, sucking deep breaths into his lungs until the pummeling in his chest subsided. When he reached the water’s edge, he hoisted his body onto the soft red clay and collapsed while the sun’s warmth drained the tension from his body.

No one knew he had survived. The rules had shifted. Now he could reinvent himself, become a stealth predator. His target: Lacey Madison Montgomery.
