Marissa slipped around the corner of the nearest building and held her breath. She inched backwards. When her foot came down on the paw of a dog sleeping against the wall, the mutt yelped and sprang to its feet. It growled and then barked ferociously.

“Hush. No bark. Quiet,” she scolded in Spanish to no avail.

She scooted back to the corner and peered down the road. As she had anticipated, the men were searching for her in the direction of the border crossing. But hearing the barking, they stopped, turned, and raced back in her direction. Marissa spun around, ran several steps, and stopped with a gasp.

The short alley was a dead end. And she couldn’t return to the road because Samir and Omar would see her.

Trapped.

With the dog biting at her heels, she tried to pry open the door of the building on the right side of the alley. The door refused to budge. Rushing across to the other building, she slammed both hands into the door. It shuddered open a crack. She rammed her shoulder into the wood and the door gave way. Ignoring the pain shooting through her arm, she swung inside the abandoned building, pushed the dog back outside with her foot, and shoved the door shut.

Minimal moonlight filtered in through the dirty, broken windows. She strained to see as she felt along the grimy walls until she found a doorway. Repeating the pattern, she worked her way back through six rooms. Where’s another exit? There can’t be only one.

The dog’s blood-curdling yelp stopped her in her tracks. Oh, God. Samir’s knife.

When the two terrorists shouted and barged into the building, Marissa slipped into another room and flattened herself against the wall beside the door. Her eyes desperately sought a way out. No more doors. Only two windows, four feet above the floor, shattered in the center. Could she dive through one without ripping herself open? Was there time?

Not bothering with stealth, the men cursed as they separated and searched, room by room. Closer and closer. When Omar stepped through the doorway, Marissa slammed the door into his face, her bulky clothes hampering her efforts.

She dashed toward the windows, but Omar recovered before she reached them. Grabbing her abaya from behind, he yelled to Samir. Viciously, he kicked the backs of her legs, buckling her knees.

She collapsed to the floor.

Samir charged through the doorway, brandishing the knife in front of him.

As she scrambled up onto her hands and knees, Omar yanked off the veil. He clutched handfuls of her long hair, exposing the back of her neck and dragging her forward. She cursed and clawed at her attackers, but both stayed just out of reach.

Samir grunted as he raised the massive knife high over her neck.

“Benja! Miláčku,” Marissa screamed.

“10 Moments That Changed My Life” by Author Chrys Fey

I am pleased to introduce today’s guest, Chrys Fey, who is sharing the moments that changed her life and her new release…

Spine Surgery

When I was fifteen I had spine surgery to correct scoliosis. My spine was curved at a 48-degree angle and was twisted. I spent five days in the hospital after doctors used fusion and a titanium rod to fix the curvature. Before my surgery, I spent every day in pain. After it, I had a hard recovery and had to learn how to do daily activities with limited movement in my back. I remember how strange it felt to walk, and go up and down stairs. I didn’t think I’d ever heal, but I did. And what I went through made me a stronger person.

The First Time I was Inspire to Write

One day, when I was twelve-years-old, I sat down on a small grassy hill next to my house after a game of basketball. I was playing with the sharp blades of grass when my fingers brushed something stuck deep in the roots—a crooked screw crusted in orange rust. For the strangest reason, a story came to me about an extraordinary girl in an alternate world. I grabbed an old notebook and wrote fiercely. I’ve written ever since.

Fire

Also when I was twelve, a series of fires erupted in my city. I remember heading home from school and seeing the black plumes. My best friend’s dad said, “It looks like it’s right next to your house.” Sure enough, it was. I was dropped off to see flames consuming the brush and trees a mere foot from my home. My house survived, but one of my cats didn’t. Her name was Angel. She had run out the door…toward the fire. She returned late that night badly burned. She died a few days later on my thirteenth birthday. Fires still scare me today.

Hurricane Francis

Hurricane Francis, a category 5 hurricane, hit Florida in 2004. Her worst happened at night while I was asleep. In the morning, I found my neighbor’s fence flat on the ground, the roof over my porch torn, and my garage door crumpled. I spent a week with my family without power and had to get MRE’s from FEMA in order to eat. This experience inspired my novella Hurricane Crimes.

Bye-bye School

When I was seventeen, I left school. Not because I was pregnant or a delinquent or anything like that. I was just going through difficult family times and found myself unable to go for several reasons. That circumstance, however, really did change my life.

After I left school, I got my GED when I was twenty-one. I hated seeing my friends graduate high school and move onto college, but that just wasn’t in my cards. I am proud of what I did though. That GED hangs proudly on my wall.

The Birth of my First Nephew

I fell in love (heart and soul) for the first time in my life when I met my nephew. I held him in the hospital, looked down at his precious face, and knew I was a goner. He is now ten-years-old!

Signing with The Wild Rose Press

I was in a bad place emotionally when I sent TWRP my manuscript. I was sinking deeper into a depression, feeling like a failure, and desperately wishing for something to change. Then it did. I received a positive email from the Senior Editor of the Crimson Rose Line (romantic-suspense) and soon had a contract. Thanks to my editor, I have published a total of 5 projects with them.

Hurricane Crimes

The day I published Hurricane Crimes, I finally felt like a winner. I was a published author! Then I received awesome messages from readers and reviewers that pushed me to think about the fate of this story. What happened before it? What happened after it? And that’s how the Disaster Crimes Series was born.

The Great Kitty Rescue

At my old apartment complex, a stray cat gave birth to 4 babies. I tried to take care of the mommy and babies the best I could. I offered shelter on my screened-in porch and gave them food and water. One day, the mom disappeared. I don’t know where she went, but before she left she made sure that her babies knew I was good. Every evening they crept onto my porch for dinner.

Sometime later, a woman with obnoxious twin boys (who I had seen throwing rocks where the babies sheltered at night, knowing they were there) was trying to grab them out from under the shed. She was unsuccessful, and I took action. That night when the babies came for their dinner, I did something drastic…I put the plate inside my house and waited for them to enter. When they did, I quietly slide the glass door shut. One of them freaked when he saw the door closed, but after a few minutes they were completely fine. It took them a few weeks to get used to seeing me so close, but they soon warmed up to me. October of this year will make it three years since they’ve been members of my family—Cole, Clover, Milo and Otis.

The Penhallow Train Incident by M.S. Spencer

The Penhallow Train Incident is set in the fictional town of Penhallow. Midcoast Maine sits right about where the state begins to change from heading due north to “down East.” The land is quite different from the southern beaches or the North Woods. Fronting Penobscot Bay, it is a region of lakes, farms, small villages, and lobstermen. Most people have lived there for generations, and refer to anyone who moves to Maine from elsewhere as “from away.” Our heroine Rachel Tinker and her hero Griffin Tate are both from away, but when a series of murders roils their adopted town, they spring into action.

Excerpt (G): We Meet Griffin

“Say, Rachel, weren’t you taking tickets for the excursion on Saturday? You must have seen the victim. What did he look like?”

Before Rachel could answer, they heard an angry growl from the bar. “God damn it, can’t a man eat his lunch in peace? God damn ghouls around here.” Griffin scratched his stubbly chin and pointed a fretful finger at the women. “You’d think no one had ever been killed before, the way you people go on and on.”

Rachel, enchanted by the way his eyes shimmered in the sunlight, didn’t respond. Maude snapped, “Professor Tate, just because you’re an old roué doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a little mystery. Not much happens in Penhallow after all. We’re entitled to some excitement.”

Griffin bristled at her. “A man is dead, Maude. This isn’t a movie.”

“Well,” she bristled back, “at least he was from away.”

Griffin gave her a long, hard look and, before turning back to his plate, muttered, “Like me.”

For some reason his words struck hard at Rachel’s heart. She couldn’t see his face, and knew it wouldn’t show the hurt anyway, but she could feel it from across the room. To a Mainer, anyone who couldn’t trace his Maine lineage back to at least the French and Indian War was considered “from away.” Locals usually felt no more than amiable indulgence for the odd critters, but now and then the innate prejudice came out. “Maude—that wasn’t nice. After all, I’m from away too.”

Lauren Linwood’s Illusions of Death

I normally write historical romance set in the medieval era or the American Old West, but lately I’ve been stepping out of my comfort zone and trying something new. I enjoy reading romantic suspense and thought I’d challenge myself to write one. The result was last summer’s Leave Yesterday Behind. I enjoyed pitting my serial killer against a mystery writer who’s just begun a relationship with a new woman and having the pair team up to stop the murderer before they became his next targets.

Wouldn’t you know it? Another serial killer began to call out to me between writing books. He demanded that I put everything else on hold and pay attention to him. His name?

Roy G. Biv.

Yes, that’s the acronym for helping yourself remember the colors of the rainbow. Roy is a creepy killer who paints his victims after he finishes with them, and he does so in the order that the colors of the rainbow appear—thus his nickname that law enforcement gives him.

Writing romantic suspense is a fine balance of creating a compelling criminal story while keeping your readers interested in the budding romance that is developing between your hero and heroine. I’ve enjoyed the change of pace and hope that I can keep juggling these two sub-genres.

He placed the last of the wet dirt on top of the second grave. Smoothed it with the back of the shovel. At least the kid wouldn’t be put through the agony of writing that essay. Or being rejected by his top choices and settling for community college and a mundane life.

He returned to the campsite as the rain slacked off to a drizzle. Packed up. He pulled his keys from his pocket. Noticed the rain had stopped. The sky lightened.

And then he saw it. A rainbow in the sky.

Of course. That was it.

Just as God placed the rainbow in the sky as a promise to Noah that He would never flood the earth again, He’d generously gifted him with a new idea.

His next mission would be served as The Rainbow Killer.

Thoughts raced in his head as he planned a new series of murders to commit. The specimens would share nothing in common, making him impossible to catch. But every murder would end in spectacular colors. In hues of the rainbow.

Confidence pulsated through him. This could be his claim to fame. A lasting legacy.

He couldn’t wait to begin.

I am thrilled to host my friend, and a fabulous author, Jannine Gallant, who writes tense, compelling, passionate Romantic Suspense.

Thanks for having me on you blog, Alicia! Today, I’d like to explore what a well-drawn setting brings to a book. For me, it establishes the tone of the story. City vs country. Hot weather vs cold. A tropical beach. Snow-capped mountains. A steamy bayou. All add a different dimension to a book, and with it, certain expectations from the reader. In my new release, Every Vow She Breaks, the story is set on the Northern California coast in the fall. Fog shrouded redwoods and long stretches of deserted beach with a cool wind blowing are the backdrop for romance and mystery. The eerie surroundings add to the suspenseful atmosphere. The feeling you get when you’re walking alone in the woods as the sun sets and dark shadows fall across the trail… A stick snaps. Your heartrate speeds up, and you glance over your shoulder, even though you know no one is there… That’s the feeling I want to convey to readers with my setting. If I’ve done my job right, immersing them in the mystery will be a piece of cake!

“10 Moments that Changed My Life” by Sharleen Scott – PLUS, her new release, TANGLES

On May 18, 1980 Mt St Helens erupted and my hometown was directly in the ash trajectory. I worked for the local newspaper and was one of the few people allowed in the downtown area following the eruption. The ash turned day to night and no one knew what damage it would do. We still find ash in the flowerbeds.
My roommate and I had a housewarming party and she invited a friend who…
I married eighteen months later.
Our son was born. I’d been working as a travel agent for eleven years and started my own home-based agency so my son wouldn’t go to daycare.
My daughter’s birth turned the agency into “Nap-Time Travel” until the two kids decided naps weren’t going to happen. I chased kids while booking cruises and airline tickets.
September 11 brought changes to the world and directly affected my small travel agency. Within three years, I sold my office.
To fill the void after losing my beloved travel career, I began writing and studying the craft of writing. The first attempt will stay in the back of a desk drawer. The second and third (the start of a romantic suspense series) received great comments from beta readers and made me think I had a chance at this whole writing thing.
Then my mother-in-law was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and my father-in-law with inoperable prostate cancer. We became caregivers.
I continued writing as a way to deal with the situation and wrote my third novel, Tangles.
I published Caught in Cross Seas and Caught in the Spin in 2014 and Tangles in 2015. I’m currently writing book three in the Caught series. I doubt my life will be the same again.

Thank you for sharing, Sharleen. Very interesting. I’m sorry about your mother-in-law and father-in-law. My best friend’s mother passed away from Alzheimer’s last year. It’s a horrible, horrible disease. Thank you so much for sharing with us.

Logan exhausted the file cabinets by 9:00 p.m. and still hadn’t located the insurance policies. Thinking there could be more files in the closets, he poked around until he found a locked box marked Personal in the top of the guest room closet. It was heavy and locked. He didn’t find a key, but rather than give up, he jimmied it open with a screwdriver. Hoping to find file folders, he was disappointed when the contents were books and notebooks, all numbered and dated.

He sat on the floor and selected a white book marked Number One. He opened it to the first page and was stunned by what he found. The first entry, with its childish scrawl and misspelled words, made him smile.

April 1936

Dear Jurnal, My name is Lois and I am six. Mama says girls like to rite stuff so she gave you to me. I hope we can be frends and I can tell you my secrets. Love, Lois

July 1936

Dear Jurnal, Larry called me a bad name today. I dumped mud on his head. Daddy spanked me. It hurt. Big brothers are icky, and I hate him. Don’t tell anyone. Love, Lois

Logan doubled over with laughter as he read his mother’s diary. He knew it was wrong, but he couldn’t stop. The entries were short but telling of Lois’ early life, and he found himself engrossed. Hours passed as he read the entries detailing her fights with her older brother, Larry, stories of her cat named Puffpuff, a dog named Hunter though he was gun shy to the point of terror, and he sniffled when he read about the day she stopped hating Larry.

April 1939

Dear friend, my grandpa died today and I’m sad. When Mama told me, I ran to the barn and cried until my stomach hurt. Puffpuff tried to make me feel better but it didn’t help. Larry found me and I yelled at him to leave me alone. He said he was sad, too, and wanted to cry with me where no one would see him. Boys aren’t supposed to cry. He held my hand and we cried together. I promised I wouldn’t tell anyone he cried. I think Larry is an okay brother after all, but don’t tell anyone I said that. Love, Lois

Logan placed the journal in the box and closed the lid. He stared at it, debating if he should return it to the closet where it belonged and leave it alone. His curiosity won, and he shoved the box in a corner and covered it with a blanket. The late hour caught up with him, and he stripped off his clothes and climbed into bed. Blissful sleep came quickly.

Excerpt – Caleb sat in a plastic chair in front of a glass window with a telephone mounted on each side at his right. The chair across from him was empty. After five more minutes an inmate was led to the door. When she came into view through a large window, his heart skipped a beat. It was her, Leah.

Her dark ringlets had grown to barely brush her shoulders and looked dull. Her face was pale and sad, but he was sure she was the girl who’d written.

She raised her handcuffs to be checked. The orange scrub top was so big on her the shoulder seams fell several inches down her thin upper arms. There was a chain attached to the cuffs that would be hooked to a belt around her waist. Her feet were probably shackled too. Didn’t they know she was harmless? Caleb rubbed his temples to ward off a gnawing ache. The man on the phone had said seven months. Almost the entire time he’d looked for her, she’d been right here…serving a jail sentence. How had this happened to such a gentle soul? She couldn’t be the woman he’d thought her to be.

When the door opened, she shuffled to the chair across from him. The chains from her wrists and between her feet probably weighed as much as she did. There wasn’t a belt at her waist, though. It hung around her hips…under her basketball-sized belly. Caleb’s stomach twisted and he felt a little lightheaded. She was, without a doubt, pregnant.

The man in the gray hoodie was watching her. Amber Jollett couldn’t see his face, but he was the right height and build. Even from the opposite street corner, the intensity of his stare bored into her. She shivered despite the sunny morning.

Her focus never wavered as she slid behind two people. The man’s head turned with her movement.

The traffic light changed, and the crowd surged forward. Amber’s hand dug into her purse until it gripped reassuring metal. Weaving between bodies, she moved to the outside edge to put as much distance as possible between her and the man before the other pedestrians passed on the street. With each step, her heart beat faster.
