Author Jan Scarbrough: Research Anyone? – New Release: Timeless (Gothic Mystery Romance)

Please help me welcome back Jan Scarbrough with another Gothic Mystery Romance. She’s also sharing a little abou ther research for TIMELESS. Welcome, Jan…

Being a history major as well as an ex-English teacher came in handy when writing Timeless, a Gothic suspense.

I pulled out a couple of books from my research library: Haunts of Old Louisville by David Domine, and The Great Louisville Tornado of 1890 by Keven McQueen. I wanted to use information from both books as inspiration and background for my story.

It’s strange what a novelist needs when writing, and the Internet is a handy place to find that information. Some of the things I researched were Baxter Square Park—Louisville’s first park—a party game called Flip Cup, post-traumatic stress disorder, and the events of September 11, 2001. I also researched a hill in Louisville’s Cherokee Park where people sled in the winter and is still called “dog hill.” I investigated carriages from the 1890’s and period clothing.

I combined all my research into a first person account of the heroine and her journey from the past into her future.

I’d love it if you’d sign up for my monthly newsletter. As a subscriber, you’ll receive a list of my favourite places to visit in the Bluegrass, insider scoop on my stories including exclusive reads and sneak peeks for upcoming releases, and you’ll have a chance to win my monthly giveaway.

Blurb for Timeless

When Beth Abbott receives a surprise inheritance from her birth mother, she travels to the family’s nineteenth century mansion in Old Louisville, now a bed and breakfast. There the new mistress of Chadwick House meets the resident ghost, a little girl whose crying not only scares, but also intrigues guests. As she sets out to discover the identity of the ghost and why the child ghost appears happy to Beth, not sad, Beth is confronted by evil from the past.

Jeff Halstead, a man with many secrets, runs the bed and breakfast. But he’s more than that to Beth, and she feels their connection immediately. A psychic medium who doubts his skills, Jeff slowly uncovers the truth of their past lives. Will he be in time to reveal the identity of Beth’s enemy? Will the love they shared in the past follow them into the future?

Excerpt – Timeless

I tried to go to sleep. My new life would be better in daylight. I could at least get a better look at my surroundings. Falling asleep would make the day come sooner.

But it didn’t work. Even though my eyes were shut tight, I couldn’t relax. Time went by. I don’t know how much time. And then I heard a faint noise.

It was the giggling of a child.

Could it be television from someone’s room?

But it didn’t sound like television. It sounded real, as if a child was playing in the hall maybe. It was a high-pitched laugh, like a little girl’s. My skin prickled, and my stomach tightened. Another chilly sensation swept over me. I was being watched. But there was no one in my room with me.

Tossing back the covers, I jumped out of bed and ran to the nearby window. Could the sound be coming from outside? A streetlamp pooled light on the sidewalk. Gray fog swirled in the air making the deserted street below seem spooky as if from a B-rated horror movie. I shivered at the thought and turned to hop back into bed.

At that moment, a flash of white raced past me, and I caught it out of the corner of my eye. I heard the giggling again, louder now. Looking back at my bed, I spotted a little girl standing on the other side of it. She was dressed in white and her slender hand reached toward my doll as if she wanted to touch it and play with it.

“Hey!”

She looked up, startled, and smiled at me as if she knew me. And then she ran from the bed toward the door to the parlor that was shut. My heart raced. I followed her, flinging open the door to stare out into the empty parlor with the gray streetlights creating a defused, half-light glow in the room.

How had the little girl gone through the door? It had been shut! How could she have disappeared so quickly? Was I dreaming? Hallucinating? I pinched myself to see if I was awake.

I was. The floor was cold even through my socks. I crossed the parlor and unlocked and opened the outer door to the hall. All was quiet except for the deep tick-tock of a grandfather clock at one end. I bit my lower lip and retreated to the parlor, making sure the door to the hall was locked.

Standing silently for a moment, listening for laughter, I let my heart settle into a normal rhythm. What was the matter with me?

Thinking back at the vision of the little girl, I realized something was wrong about it. The child’s clothes were more fitting for the nineteenth century, not the twenty-first. In fact, her clothes reminded me of the lacy frills of my doll. And the girl’s hair was long, curled in dark blond ringlets down her back, and she wore a white ribbon in her hair. Her body didn’t seem solid. It was transparent, almost ghost-like.

Ah, shit!

I charged back into the bedroom and leaped into the bed, pulling the covers over my head. As if hiding under covers could save me. I was behaving like a child myself, but I didn’t know what else to do. I didn’t know a phone number to call unless I punched 911. Then what would I say to the firemen or police? I saw a ghost standing by my bed. Right. That made as much sense as me inheriting a million dollars from a woman I’d never known or seen.

But I had inherited a million dollars . . . two million to be exact.

That realization didn’t thrill me. So I tried to think of another explanation, something besides the paranormal.

Try as I might, I couldn’t make sense of my experience. My mind whirled and twirled but I couldn’t come up with a clear explanation. Later I heard the grandfather clock bong once in the distance, ghost-like itself. This place was too darn spooky for me, I remember thinking. Soon after that I must have relaxed enough to fall asleep.

Excerpt:

Leaning over, Lathen’s arms enveloped Pepper calming her angry energy. “You okay?”

She nodded. A faint orange glow emanated from her palms slowly spreading to her fingers. A tiny spark snapped at the tip of her pinky.  His large hands eased over hers to stop the progression of sparks. A vibration of feet pounding the ground had them both glancing up as a uniformed police officer sprinted toward them.

Lathen listened while Pepper gave her statement. He added what he saw and they were released. On the drive to the cabin, Pepper rested her head on his shoulder, his arm wrapped around her. Nostrils flared as he inhaled her citrus and wildflower scent mixed with the adrenaline that fueled her flight or fight response, now diminishing as she relaxed against him.

For the first time since that terrible day his SEAL team’s mission had gone horribly wrong, the sensation of phasing had thrummed through his body as he shoved his way through the crowd to get to Pepper. He actually had to restrain the response. Could I have phased? Was the overwhelming desire to protect Pepper so ingrained, his wolf’s physical ability to shift kicked in? He didn’t have the answers tonight, but… Restless in the seat, he flexed his torso and leg muscles. A coiled ready-to-spring sensation felt familiar. A slight smile crossed his lips.

Pepper tilted her head up to peer at him. “Uncomfortable?” She tried to slide over giving him more room, but his arm tightened around her pulling her closer.

“Never felt better in my life,” he said confidently. The predator awareness was back, and he reveled in it.

Her eyebrow arched in question as he felt her eyes linger on him and shot her a quick glance.

“So has trouble always followed you around?” he wanted to know.

“…Nooo, well, not exactly. At least not to this level. You’re aware of the final incident in Salem, but the ten years prior was calm, except for deadbeat boyfriends.”

“Which, I am guessing, is why you learned to defend yourself so well. Magic didn’t do it for you?”

“Magic is hard to use in the presence of mortals. Besides, it’s forbidden. You know that.”

Lathen raised an eyebrow. “Someone forgot to tell Mr. Green or Mr. Bonchard. And what about those flying feathers the night Tom showed up at your place?”

She shook her head. “I still have no idea what happened that night. Must have been the cabin or land, some kind of protection enchantment that triggered it. Glad no one else saw. Need to talk to Ashling. Seemed the feathers took on a life of their own.”

“Oh—Green saw, all right. He was babbling about all kinds of things as they took him away.”

She shrugged. “Strange, if he’s any type of magical creature, he’d know better than to say such things.” Pepper looked up at him, her forehead creased. “Things just don’t add up.”

The truck slowed to a stop in front of the cabin. “We’ll remember this Fourth of July for years to come,” Lathen commented with a frown.

Ten Moments That Changed My Life.

  1. Losing my job due to downsizing in 2014.  I’d written stories most my life, but when this happened after being at the job over 14 years, I decided with my hubby’s support it was time to live out my dream of being a published author. After the initial shock of losing my job,  I polished up A Demon’s Witch manuscript. After overcoming my fear of book submission.  Yes, people, it’s a real phobia, a close friend and my hubby insisted that I submit a query letter and synopsis.
  2. Request for a full manuscript and The Wild Rose Press contract that followed.  My husband was out of town when the email arrived that TWRP wanted to contract A Demon’s Witch. I was so excited I called and could do nothing but squeal in his ear.  Finally, I settled down enough to tell him I hadn’t lost my mind, but A Demon’s Witch had a contract.
  3. Holding that debut novel in my hand was beyond my wildest dreams.  I was a published author, now I wanted more.  The rest, as they say, is history.
  4. Promotion. What a learning curve!  For a person who didn’t facebook, thought twitter was for the birds, this was foreign territory. I took a class on building web pages, signed up for Facebook and figured out how to tweet with the help of other authors. I built and maintain my own website at www.tenastetler.com, post three times a week to FB and Tweet daily. What a shock to the system. LOL
  5. Additional contracts for Charm Me, A Witch’s Journey and my 2016 holiday release, A Witch’s Holiday Wedding made my first year with TWRP fantastic!! I’m working on the second book in the Demon’s Witch series, now.
  6. The purchase of a fifth wheel trailer and RVing over the country as vacation time allowed.  I love to hike, kayak, go whitewater rafting, and bicycling in the state and national parks of our great country.  In fact, this past weekend, on a camping trip to Cheyenne Mountain State Park, I finished the first draft of the second book in the Demon’s Witch series.  Yippee!
  7. First real date with a wonderful man who became my husband. We went to see the original Star Wars movie.
  8. It was a whirlwind courtship, he proposed and we were married four months later.
  9. The death of my mother changed me in so many ways. I miss her every day. It changed the way I looked at life.  Life is short, don’t put off enjoying it, because you’re not guaranteed tomorrow, no matter your age.  It changed my tolerance for mean-spirited people.  And made me realize the value of kindness and paying it forward.
  10. It’s not changed my life yet, but I am so enjoying planning our wedding anniversary celebration to Disneyland (Star Wars Adventure) and Universal Studios (Harry Potter’s World). Our long time best friends will be joining us!

Author Interview: Patti Sherry-Crews & New Release: The Ghost and the Bridegroom from The Good, The Bad and the Ghostly

I am thrilled to once again welcome Patti Sherry-Crews to my blog…and what a fascinating book she’s sharing with us today! The Ghost and the Bridegroom from The Good, The Bad and the Ghostly

Please tell us a little about yourself, where are you from? Where do you live now? Family? Pets?

I live in Evanston, Il where I was born and I’m married to fellow Evanstonian, Bob. I have two children, one of each, and a stepson who has made us grandparents. We have a parakeet, a cat and a puggle. I have lived in Iowa, Boston, and Wales, UK during my student and post-student years.

Where did you get the idea for The Ghost and the Bridegroom?

All of the stories in this anthology are connected by a paranormal detective agency. Somewhere at the beginning it was suggested this agency is like the Pinkerton Detectives, so I thought it would be fun to have my agent meet a Pinkerton detective while they are staying at the same hotel in Tucson while working on separate cases. They fall in love, of course. Not really sure how I came up with the rest of the story. I thought it would be interesting to have my rather socially awkward young lady detective find herself put on a case where a rancher is unable to consummate his marriage to his mail-order bride because he’s being terrorized by a ghost in the bedroom. Eventually the case the Pinkerton is working on intersects with the case my agent is on. My story is more humorous than scary.

Why did you choose this genre (is it something you’ve written in before)?

I usually write historical westerns or contemporary. I never wrote a paranormal story before, but I was excited to be asked to be part of this anthology which is a collaboration between western and paranormal authors.

Was there anything unusual, any anecdote about this book, the characters, title, process, etc, you’d like to share?

Yes, at the suggestion of one of the other authors I named my heroine Healy Harrison after my daughter. When she was born I wanted to give her more than her father’s father’s surname. So Healy is the maiden name of my great grandmother and Harrison is the maiden name of my mother-in-law. I thought I was being clever, but the poor girl has to go through life correcting her name because everyone calls her Kelly or something similar. The same thing happens to the character in the story.

What is the most difficult thing about writing a book?

I think everything that comes after writing the book is the hardest part, starting with what to do with it once you write “The End.”. I write for Prairie Rose Publications for my historical westerns and medieval romances. I’ve also self-published a number of things. Keeping up on all the social media sites alone is time consuming. And then there is the promoting…Thank you Alicia!

What was the most difficult thing about this one in particular?

I really love Tucson but as stated earlier I live the Midwest. I also live in the 21st century with the rest of you, not 1880. So trying to get the setting right for this book was a challenge. I mean, I don’t want folks from Tucson coming back to me and telling me I put the streets in the wrong places. I was trying to find maps, etc. when something fortuitous happened. Some man on Pinterest messaged me to say he had boards devoted to late 19thc Tucson and he invited me to repin. He had so many photos and maps! We didn’t even follow each other so I don’t know how he found me and I haven’t heard from him since. Thanks to him, I could be more accurate with streets and buildings. He had a great photo of a Chinese laundry across from the train station, which I put in my story.

Are there any tricks, habits or superstitions you have when creating a story?

People who know me are probably sick of hearing me say this, but I’m a big believer in walking. I find an hour long walk at the start of my day stimulates my creativity. I do much of my “writing” while I’m walking. And because I do not have a fenced in yard, but I do have a dog with a small bladder, I’m frequently taking more walks during the day. It really clears my head. People who know me are probably sick of seeing me walking by their houses ten times a day.

What actors would you like in the main roles if your book were made into a movie?

While I was writing this story I had Irish actor Aidan Turner in mind for detective Aaron Turrell (see how I did that with the name). If you don’t know him from the Hobbit or Poldark, he’s tall, dark and handsome. Since the heroine is based on my daughter, I’d cast her, and then she’d get to meet Aidan Turner.

If you could be a character in any of your books, who would you be?

Oh, good question! I make such delicious heroes; I’d be happy to be any of the ladies in my books. But, there is one book very close to my heart, Patrick III. It’s based on a trip I took with 3 generations of my family to Newfoundland to discover our roots. Even though the book has nothing to do with that trip other than I liked the dynamics of generations of a family traveling together outside their usual roles, I did weave in some personal experiences–including finding a small town named after my family. It was full of Healy’s and Nugents (the other Newfie branch of my family) who never left Newfoundland and remain in situ (they welcomed us with open arms). There is more of me in the main female, Gwen, than I usually put in a character. Plus, I think the hero, Patrick, is one of my favorite creations.  He’s a solid, reliable guy, who’s taking some personal time to reevaluate his life. He and Gwen keep crossing paths on the island as they are each on their own quest. Eventually Gwen ditches her family and spends a glorious time riding out on the back of his motorcycle, doing outdoorsy things like hiking and kayaking during the day and ending their excursions in fine hotels and restaurants. My dream vacation: I’m an active person but I’m not going to sleep in a tent.

If you could spend time with a character from your book, whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

One of my favorite characters is Des Costello in Love with an Expiration Date. He’s dynamic, charismatic, and has a wicked sense of humor. He’s an independent filmmaker who lives in Dublin. He’s kind of a player (he’s been wounded) but when he meets a visiting American English professor, he falls head over heels. His mission becomes to make her fall in love with not just him but Dublin as well so she’ll stay. I’d love to walk around the city with him or visit the pub. He’s so charming. I could talk to him forever.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

Probably like most authors, I love to people-watch. I’m also a shameless eavesdropper, so I store bits of things I’ve seen or heard in my head. But really I make up my characters. Though on two occasions I woke up from vivid dreams where I saw a scene with people I didn’t know. I based two books, Love with an Expiration Date and Pairings, around the snippets I dreamed about.

What do your friends and family think of your writing?

My friends and family are very supportive and my biggest fans. Big shout out to my husband for letting me disappear hours a day doing dubious things with my time and who also helps me with technical stuff. My friends are my beta readers and have always encouraged me from the start.

How did you come up with the title?

Coming up with titles is a challenge for me. If I ever strike it rich I’d hire someone to think up titles for me. Then I’d hire another person to write blurbs. Because this story is a detective story set in the past, I wanted to give a nod to the classic detective novels whose titles started with “The Case of…” Originally I was going to call my story The Case of the Ghost and the Bridegroom. But because my own name is long enough, I didn’t want to eat up the cover with text. I also didn’t want to type the longer title every time I had to refer to it, so I chopped off the first few words.

Thank you for sharing such an interesting interview, Patti. Now, she has a question for readers:

When you start reading a romance novel and the Hero first appears what qualities about him hook you into the story?

The Ghost and the Bridegroom by Patti Sherry-Crews

Life is looking rosy for Abbott Foster when he brings his new bride to his ranch in Arizona. But when he is unable to consummate his marriage due to a malevolent spirit in the bedroom, he is forced to call in Psychic Specters Investigations.

Agent Healy Harrison doesn’t want to accept this case. She has her own demons and likes her quiet life, lived in the anonymity of St. Louis. But Tucson is where she finds herself—with instructions to “Have an adventure! Have a romance!” Things get interesting when she meets handsome Pinkerton detective, Aaron Turrell. Is this the romance she’s meant to have, or when their two cases intersect, will it drive him away?

In this excerpt agent Healy Harrison meets the rancher for the first time and learns about his haunting.

He ran a hand through his sandy brown hair. “I can’t talk to you about this. I thought you’d be a man. This is a delicate matter.”

“Mr. Foster, I assure you I’ve seen everything. There isn’t anything you can tell me I haven’t heard before. What’s happening to you has happened to many before you.”

“That’s just it. I’ve heard about it happening to other men, but it’s never happened to me before.”

“Ah, I see. Well, this too is a common reaction. Many don’t believe in ghosts until they experience the phenomenon themselves. You’re not alone.”

He looked down. “I’m not talking about ghosts.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I can’t talk to a young lady about this.”

“You can! Nothing you say will shock me.”

“Are you a…spinster?”

Healy huffed. “I don’t see how my marital status is relevant, but yes, I am not a married woman.”

“So you don’t have experience…”

“Please, I have traveled a long way under the most trying circumstances to help you. You’ve already paid the agency, and here I am!  Let’s just start at the place where you encountered the haunting?”

Abbott sighed. “In the bedroom.”

“You’re lucky in that sense. Some ghosts follow people around and make all kinds of mischief.”

“Naw, you ain’t catching my meaning.”

“Enlighten me.”

“Aw, all right.” He took a long pause, studying his boots before he looked up again. “I’m a newlywed….”

“Congratulations.”

“Yes, but here’s the crux of the matter. The ghost will not allow me to…consummate my marriage.”

Healy felt her face burn red. “Oh, I see. Well, that is a new one on me. Never heard of that one before. How is it that the ghost has power to stop…the act?”

“Ever since I brought Erline—that’s my bride—home, things don’t work right.”

She put a hand on his arm. “Are you sure you’re consulting the right expert? Have you talked to your doctor?”

His face went beet red with frustration. “It’s having a ghost in my bedroom gumming up the works.”

“You have to be more specific. I need details.”

He shuffled his feet in the dust on the boards of the porch. “I think about Erline all day. She’s so pretty. I can’t wait to go to bed. I get in next to her all cocked and ready to fire—and she’s eager too–I can tell, but then when I put….”

Healy put up her hand. “I don’t mean those kinds of details. Tell me about the ghost.”

“Oh, well, it always starts the same way. First there is this god-awful odor like rotten flowers.”

“Olfactory manifestations. Very rare. Interesting. Go on.”

He looked proud of himself a minute for having a rare haunting. “After I smell the odor a shape appears in the corner. A big, black shadow.”

“Oh, this is bad. Very bad. Black shadows are extremely malevolent.”

“It gets worse.”

“Worse than a black shadow? You’re wise to call in a professional.”

“The shadow moves. It walks, or floats–or whatever those things do–and comes and stands right next to the bed, and the creature points at me! Things shrink up down south at that point, if you know what I mean.”

A Bodyguard’s Trip to Peru (book # 4 of the series with Jazmin & Ethan) by Ann Raina

Please help me welcome today’s guest, Ann Raina, with her latest release….

About the author

Ann Raina lives in Germany with cats and a horse. In between real life necessities, writing is her most important task and also a privilege. The latest series, starting with The Secretary’s Bodyguard, turns around a loving couple trying to live their life in spite of dangers and other troubles.

abodyguardstriptoperu_annraina

Blurb

While at a conference with the Secretary of State, Ethan and Jazmin get confronted with terrorists, drug dealers, and a bunch of nasty people.

Excerpt

He put an arm around her shoulder when she huddled against his side. “Are you feeling all right?”

“Yeah.” She put a hand on his belly. “They gave us enough food and drink to be satisfied. I was allowed to brush and braid my hair, and we could wash ourselves. I hadn’t put it beyond them to hand you a razor. You look like a thug by now, with that stubble.”

“Thanks a lot.” He gave a curt bow and ran a hand over the stubble on his chin. “I don’t mind skipping shaving for a few days.”

Her voice sank to a threatening growl. “You won’t show up like some grizzly hunter on Christmas day, right?”

Ethan pursed his lips as if pondering the possibility. “If I’m to play Santa, I need more than stubble. I should start growing a beard right away.”

Jazmin made a disgusted face and he chuckled. “Imagine your mom’s face when I open the door in some checkered flannel shirt, unkempt, and with a beard reaching down to my chest. What would she say?”

“She’d check the name plate and ask if her son-in-law had moved.” Jazmin shook her head. “Don’t do that to her. You know how much she loves to show off with her famous son-in-law, the bodyguard. She’ll bring her closest friends and their families. I bet she’d faint seeing you like a scoundrel.”

“And you?” He kissed the tip of her nose. “What would you say?”

Jazmin replied in her bedroom voice, “I’d rip that ugly shirt off your body, push away the beard, and kiss my way down your navel. If you’d dare to wear anything else, it would have to go, so I could check whether your accessories were still intact on Christmas day.”

Ethan swallowed. He appeared out of breath. “You don’t like checkered flannel shirts?”

“I like unwrapping you to see you in nothing, Ethan, and you damn well know it.” She cocked her head. “The beard would be next on my list, of course.” And when he arched his brows, she added, “I like my man neat, clean-shaven. That reminds me that I’ve always wanted to wet shave you.”

“Wet shave? Why’s that?”

Jazmin ran a hand across his chin and cheek, smiling about his disgust. “The feel of it. Nothing compares to a wet shave. It’s so…smooth.”

“You really want to do that?”

“A girl can have dreams, right?”

Ethan inched away from her to look her in the eyes. “If that’s something you like—why haven’t you told me?”

Jazmin gave him an innocent look. “Because you once told me you didn’t like the time and effort. Especially not with your fast growing beard.”

“You remember that? After such a long time?”

Jazmin nodded. “I do.”

He shook his head, then a smile broke through. “Let’s make a deal, princess. Once back at home, I’ll allow you to shave me to your heart’s content, okay? That’s my Christmas gift for you.”

She bit her lips. “Just the beard?”

A titled lord, concert pianist, and … vampire, Morgan D’Arcy has everything he wants…except what he most desires…the woman of his dreams—the search is on.

Blurb:

The greatest enemy of a vampire is boredom. Four centuries of existence have taught Lord Morgan Gabriel D’Arcy to fear nothing and no one. Humans and their weapons have little chance against his preternatural speed and arcane powers. Vampires are viral mutations of human DNA. Still, the Vampyre code requires secrecy, and he has learned to hide his nature from the world. The lure of mortality, of a life in the sun, puts Morgan again and again at the mercy of calculating human women though they fail to consider his charm and determination into the equation. However, even grooming a future bride from infancy proves to be fraught with heartbreak. And second chances are not always what they seem unless… you are Morgan. Immortality and beauty, aren’t they grand?

“…Morgan…is a tour de force of egotism, wit, sensuality, and talent…” ~Author Toni V. Sweeney

“Morgan D’Arcy is a class act and the most arresting vampire I’ve ever encountered in literature or films.” ~ Historical and Paranormal Romance Author Beth Trissel

Excerpt:

Snow built castles on the windowsills.  Wispy flakes swirled in the night air.  I stood at the mullioned window with my back to the Chief Councilor of the ruling body of the Vampyre.  The pure white silence of a snowy night echoed in the room.  A fire crackled in the fireplace, but cold seeped through the stone walls.

At midnight, Lucien St. Albans had arrived with shocking news.

Royal Oak wasn’t on the beaten path.  The castle perched on a hill above a small village on the Devon coast.  From my bedroom window, I could see the ocean.  Lucien had driven his new motorcar hard to tell me that there was no such thing as forever.  He was pale and drawn, worried.  I’d never seen the Chief Councilor rattled.  Lucien St. Alban’s self control was legendary.  The emotion in his black eyes was fear, and a shudder chased over me.

“I drove straight from an emergency meeting of Les Elus,” he announced without preamble.  “We are all in jeopardy.”

In a small principality between France and Spain, an epidemic of anthrax ravaged the countryside.  Not only human villagers died in Andorra.  Two vampires had perished.

Grief for Daphne and guilt for her suicide had wearied my spirit.  “Why send me?  I’m not a scientist.”

“Dear God, Morgan, I wouldn’t send you into danger.”  Behind me, Lucien’s reflection appeared in the window.  He rested his hands on my shoulders.  “One of our scientists plans to travel to Andorra immediately and investigate.   He believes the bacteria secretes an endotoxin that is a reverse mutagen.  When infected, the disease progresses at a phenomenal rate.  The victim reverts to mortal, and the body disintegrates to ash.”

A thrill pierced my lethargy.  Dead vampires presented an intriguing mystery.  Members of our select society should not perish to a disease fatal to humans, or very few others of the Grim Reaper’s tricks.  It was time for me to stop lurking in Death’s shadow.  My grief for Daphne was useless to her corpse.  She was quite simply and forever gone.  Reverse mutagen.  The mere idea sent a shiver of excitement over me.  If the Vampyre Effect could be undone, then the possibility of returning to human existed.

NEW RELEASE Alert!!! TARGETED (FBI HEAT #2) by Marissa Garner

So pleased to share my friend Marissa Garner’s latest release. She writes excellent Romantic Suspense…looking forward to reading this one!

Targetedcover_lores

BLURB:

For San Diego’s elite FBI agents, risking their lives is standard procedure when it comes to capturing the city’s most dangerous criminals—but falling in love is the greatest risk of all.

RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES…

FBI Special Agent Marissa Panuska faces the most explosive case of her career when she impersonates a female terrorist to infiltrate an al-Qaeda cell. Her dark hair, olive complexion, and Arabic fluency make her the perfect imposter, but each passing hour raises the risk of discovery. Can she stop the dirty-bomb plot—alone—when the Feds don’t even know the target? And should she trust the mysterious man who bursts into her life when her cover is blown?

SO CLOSE TO REALITY…

Former Navy SEAL Ameen Ali has a very personal reason for hating the terrorists and vowing to stop them. But when a beautiful woman joins the sleeper cell spreading death-to-America propaganda at his mosque, he doesn’t want to believe she shares their evil goals. Can he convince her to join forces before it’s too late?

FBIseries_Targeted_600x363

EXCERPT:

Marissa slipped around the corner of the nearest building and held her breath. She inched backwards. When her foot came down on the paw of a dog sleeping against the wall, the mutt yelped and sprang to its feet. It growled and then barked ferociously.

“Hush. No bark. Quiet,” she scolded in Spanish to no avail.

She scooted back to the corner and peered down the road. As she had anticipated, the men were searching for her in the direction of the border crossing. But hearing the barking, they stopped, turned, and raced back in her direction. Marissa spun around, ran several steps, and stopped with a gasp.

The short alley was a dead end. And she couldn’t return to the road because Samir and Omar would see her.

Trapped.

With the dog biting at her heels, she tried to pry open the door of the building on the right side of the alley. The door refused to budge. Rushing across to the other building, she slammed both hands into the door. It shuddered open a crack. She rammed her shoulder into the wood and the door gave way. Ignoring the pain shooting through her arm, she swung inside the abandoned building, pushed the dog back outside with her foot, and shoved the door shut.

Minimal moonlight filtered in through the dirty, broken windows. She strained to see as she felt along the grimy walls until she found a doorway. Repeating the pattern, she worked her way back through six rooms. Where’s another exit? There can’t be only one.

The dog’s blood-curdling yelp stopped her in her tracks. Oh, God. Samir’s knife.

When the two terrorists shouted and barged into the building, Marissa slipped into another room and flattened herself against the wall beside the door. Her eyes desperately sought a way out. No more doors. Only two windows, four feet above the floor, shattered in the center. Could she dive through one without ripping herself open? Was there time?

Not bothering with stealth, the men cursed as they separated and searched, room by room. Closer and closer. When Omar stepped through the doorway, Marissa slammed the door into his face, her bulky clothes hampering her efforts.

She dashed toward the windows, but Omar recovered before she reached them. Grabbing her abaya from behind, he yelled to Samir. Viciously, he kicked the backs of her legs, buckling her knees.

She collapsed to the floor.

Samir charged through the doorway, brandishing the knife in front of him.

As she scrambled up onto her hands and knees, Omar yanked off the veil. He clutched handfuls of her long hair, exposing the back of her neck and dragging her forward. She cursed and clawed at her attackers, but both stayed just out of reach.

Samir grunted as he raised the massive knife high over her neck.

“Benja! Miláčku,” Marissa screamed.

“10 Moments that Changed My Life” by Author Janie Franz

Please help me welcome author Janie Franz, who is sharing the moments that changed her life and her series, The Bowdancer Saga…

10 moments new_MTE1MTUwNTQ0MTg

It was hard to pick just ten moments. I’ve lived a long time and there are many more.

  1. The Scholastic Book Fair in school. My mother, bless her, always managed to pay for all the books I wanted to buy when I got the sales flyers at school. She valued books but couldn’t read very well herself.
  2. Discovering in seventh grade that other people’s input could change a story (whether I wanted it to go that way or not) when a friend wanted me to write a happy ending to a story I wrote. I discovered at that young age that I didn’t write quite like others wanted, but I had to be true to my own style and what I had to say.
  3. Taking a creative writing course in high school and getting my first check for a published work. However, it wasn’t for my specialty: short stories. I was paid for an essay and two poems. That sort of set the tone for a large part of my life that followed.
  4. Having to make a critical decision in college on whether to pursue art or writing. When I hit a wall in my advanced drawing class, I went to my professor and told her that I was at a crossroads. She said that she had to do the same thing when she was first in college. She chose art. I chose writing. Art would always be a big part of my life but only as a hobby.
  5. The births of both of my children and later my two grandchildren. I was told by a wise La Leche League Founding Mother that once you become a mother, it profoundly changes your life. She said you will always be a mother, no matter how old your children are and that it also affects how you interact with others throughout your life.
  6. Going back to college to finish my degree at 49, but not in English or Creative Writing, but in Anthropology, my second love. I discovered I could pull from all of my previous life experiences (as well as reading broadly, writing for non-profits organizations, tutoring college students with learning disabilities, and editing professors’ journal articles) and see a whole picture. A student told me that I didn’t need to work so hard for my A. I told her that I wasn’t there for a GPA. I was there because I was fascinated by the subject matter.
  7. Booking and doing publicity for my son’s groove/funk band. I’d been helping him do some booking and publicity before they were signed by a local record company. When that company failed to book them in places that matched their style, we bought out of the contract and I took on those duties, booking locally and two national tours. I learned a lot about how to use the computer for research, how to schmooze club owners, how to mount a continuous marketing campaign, and how to promote in general.
  8. Starting my own freelance writing/editing business in 2000. I took everything I’d learned about computer research and promoting and applied it to looking for work—not getting an editor to buy my pitched story–but a writing job that would generate more work. I broke every rule I’d been taught about landing a writing gig. I spent the next few years interviewing all sorts of people and writing literally about everything from medical articles, music and dance, art, pavement, dental labs and dentistry, food and wine, and science.
  9. Getting my first book published in 2009, the first book in the Bowdancer series. I eventually moved that book and two more to MuseItUp Publishing when my contracts expired. I already had eight titles with Muse and plan on publishing many more. I have used all of my experience marketing a band by trying to market myself as an author.
  10. Having to start over after a divorce and moving to a new part of the country. I healed and rediscovered lost pieces of myself as I adapted to a new climate and landscape. I’ve discovered new cultures here in New Mexico, and I’m surrounded by archaeological sites that I’d only read about in college. I’m fitting into my independence and learning more life lessons. This all inspired my self-help book, Standing Strong: Honoring the Unexpected Changes in Our Lives (Lessons along the Journey of Becoming a Woman of Power), which is currently being reviewed by a psychologist.

Oh my gosh, what a life you’ve led. Very touching about your mother. What a gift she gave you. Wise words about motherhood. Once you become a mother, everything changes. I know what you mean about finding it difficult to only pick 10. I have tortured guests by asking them to do so, but the tables were turned when I did the same on an author friend’s blog. It IS difficult to pick only 10. You did an excellent job, though. Very pivotal moments. Thank you so much for sharing.

TheBowdancerSagaJuly10

Blurb:

The Bowdancer series chronicles the life of Jan-nell, a young healer and keeper of tribal lore, who seeks belonging as she discovers a vast world outside of her village. The Bowdancer Saga presents her early years in that quest as she discovers rogues, bards, kings, beespinners, and muscular sword dancers with as much grace as the bowdancer herself, and many unusual beliefs and lifeways as she seeks to create family in some form.

Excerpt:

The arrow flamed in a yellow arc across the night sky, like a trailing star portending some great event. And in truth it did this night, the night of the Great Moon of Full Summer. This night the bowdancer’s arrow signaled a solemn rite and a village celebration—the union of Merin, the tall horserider, and Co-rell, the blonde chosen-daughter of Wise Woman Dan-da-nell.

They were often seen among the white mares in the meadow. Merin’s long hair flowed behind him as he raced to grab a handful of yellow-white horse mane nearly the same color as his own. He would swing himself upon a sleek back of one of the mares and come racing to scoop Co-rell high onto the horse with him, cradling her in his arms like a happy squealing child.

Jan-nell, the bowdancer, knocked the last burning signal arrow against her bowstring. She smiled as her mind composed the quatrains of an idyll to the horserider and his bride: white against white like playful doves, spirit folk.

When she released the arrow to call in the stragglers from the outlying farms, she shook her head and altered her imagery. No, not spirit folk, just sleek horses riding the meadows enjoying the fullness of coupling and sweet grass. But this young stallion and his mare would grace the village children’s tales and lessons. Jan-nell would see to that. Co-rell and Merin were the stuff of legends. She would gladly give the young ones a dream. They need not know that Merin could not speak a sentence without coloring the shade of a retiring sun and much preferred the silent movements of horses to men.

Jan-nell had spent too many early mornings drilling Merin in the wedding words he was to speak to Co-rell. There were only five short speeches, but they were impossible for him to remember, much less speak them to a woman. Finally, on this wedding morn, he had been able to say the words to Jan-nell without much stumbling. She did not know if he could repeat them at moon-rise to Co-rell.

Jan-nell frowned as she ducked into her solitary thatched hut some little distance from the village edge. She wondered why she remained with such simple wits. From a shelf above the stone fireplace she had laid with her own hands, she brought down a pot of scented oil and set it on the hearth to warm. Taking a small piece of cloth, she wiped the smoke from her large bow.

Version 2

Bio:

Janie Franz comes from a long line of Southern liars and storytellers. She told  other people’s stories as a freelance journalist for many years. With Texas wedding DJ, Bill Cox, she co-wrote The Ultimate Wedding Ceremony Book and The Ultimate Wedding Reception Book, and then self-published a writing manual, Freelance Writing: It’s a Business, Stupid!  She also published an online music publication, was an agent/publicist for a groove/funk band, a radio announcer, and a yoga/relaxation instructor.

Currently, she is writing her tweveth novel and a self-help book, Standing Strong:

Honoring the Unexpected Changes in Our Lives (Lessons along the Journey of Becoming a Woman of Power)
