Nick Wilford’s “Black & White”

I am happy to introduce Nick Wilford, a ‘new to me’ author sharing an interesting interview and a book that sounds like a great read!

Hello, Nick…welcome! Please tell us a little about yourself, where are you from? Where do you live now? Family? Pets?

I’m originally from Brighton, England, but moved to Glasgow, Scotland in 2003 to study journalism. As I enjoyed writing, I figured it would be good to pursue a career that involved doing it on a daily basis. I met my wonderful wife the following year, and since then I haven’t looked back! I’ve got one daughter, Eve, and two stepdaughters, Hannah and Emma. My stepson Andrew, who sadly passed away in 2013, is now our guardian angel. We’ve also got five boisterous pups who keep us on our toes – Pippa, Rudi, Tobi, Charlie, and Benji.

Where did you get the idea for Black & White?

My book is all about an ideal, disease-free society that has a darker side. There’s no dirt, and the initial idea came from a passing thought I had about how much more I could get done if everything stayed clean all the time – but it developed into something much bigger.

Why did you choose this genre (is it something you’ve written in before)?

I have written speculative fiction, with a previously published novella that was set in contemporary times, but this is the first time I’ve written a dystopian. I wouldn’t say I chose that genre though, it was just what seemed to most closely fit the genre.

Was there anything unusual, any anecdote about this book, the characters, title, process, etc, you’d like to share?

I used NaNoWriMo twice when writing this series – the first time in 2012 to start the first book, and the second time in 2014 to finish the draft of the second book. That latter occasion was the only time I’ve won!

What is the most difficult thing about writing a book?

I’m tempted to say the title; that always seems to be the most difficult for me. With this series, however, I sat down and brainstormed one day, went out to walk the dogs, and came up with titles for the whole series!

What was the most difficult thing about this one in particular?

With this book, the society had a complete reset of history when the ruling party came into power; in other words, they deleted everything that came before, for their own nefarious purposes. I constantly had to bear in mind that there were certain things the characters wouldn’t know, and even phrases they wouldn’t say.

Do you have another occupation, other than writer? If so, what is it and do you like it?

Yes, I’m a full-time freelance editor. I definitely enjoy it, as it takes a lot of brain power, it keeps me engaged when I’m not writing, and I learn things from it all the time.

What do you love that most people don’t like and wouldn’t understand why you do?

I love getting up early to write – like 4 a.m. early. It’s perfect for me because I get pretty much total peace and it’s almost a magical time – it’s hard to write during the day because we’ve got a pretty crazy house with kids and dogs making plenty of noise. I find it really hard to sleep in late any more, and usually that’s not an option because the dogs want to get up anyway!

What was your first job?

My first job was a paper boy – I did that from age 13 (well, a week before my birthday, which was technically illegal) up to nearly 17. It got me used to early starts, because I now get up before work to write (and work starts at 6am). I also get to tell people that I’ve always worked with words in some form!

What do you want readers to come away with after they read Black & White?

I hope that it will make readers think about issues of acceptance. Our society doesn’t seem to be getting any better in that regard, only worse. It’s still hard to believe that someone like Donald Trump can be president – and in the UK, we’ve had Brexit, which many voted for out of xenophobic reasons. None of that had happened when I started writing this, but I think it’s made it more relevant. There’s also the idea that it’s possible for one person to make a difference, which is inspiring.

Would you rather have a bad review or no review?

That’s a tough one. Is it better to have a strong adverse reaction or one of indifference? I would hate for anything to write to be greeted with “meh”. If it’s a less favourable review that has some constructive criticism, something to build on, then I’ll take it.

What genre have you never written that you’d like to write?

I would love to try my hand at a historical one day, because history is a passion of mine. It would mean a lot of research, of course, and I’m always impressed by authors who go to great lengths to make sure everything rings true. An alternate history is something that’s quite appealing, because it contains greater scope for invention.

What character in your book are you least likely to get along with and why?

Probably Ezmerelda, one of my two young teen protagonists. She’s very smart and matter-of-fact, and she’d probably get annoyed with me for failing to keep up with her speed of thinking!

How did your interest in writing originate?

The first proper things I wrote were sketches for my drama club at school. I had an idea about being some sort of comedian, and even started writing a TV sketch show with a friend. I still like to have some element of humour in my writing, even with a story that can appear quite grim, but I soon realized that I’m more comfortable staying behind the screen than trying to perform for others to see!

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

My favourite author is Terry Pratchett, and what I like about his work is that, even though it takes place in a fantastical world, it features characters you can relate to and recognize and even messages that are relevant to issues that affect us. That side of it has a large bearing on some of my own work, particularly this new series.

Your favorite…?

Music

My favourite band is Mansun, and my favourite album of theirs is Six, which I’m actually listening to as I write this. It’s an amazingly creative cocktail of musical ideas and lyrical thoughts, some of which overlap each other, but you can make out of it whatever you want. It’s like a haunting dreamscape and inspires me a lot.

Place you’ve visited

I went backpacking when I was younger and visited Uluru in Australia. It was a breathtaking sight, especially watching the sun go down behind it and the sky sift through changing shades of pink and orange into black. Getting to climb up it and sit on top was cool too!

Place you’d like to visit

I’ve always wanted to see the pyramids and Sphinx in Egypt and still hope to get there some day.

TV show from childhood

My favourite program as a kid was Red Dwarf, about the last survivor of the human race who is stranded on a spaceship 3 million years in the future, with a hologram, a robot, and a humanoid creature who evolved from his cat as company. It’s brilliantly observed character comedy, with some neat sci-fi concepts in there as well.

TV show from adulthood

Well, actually my favourite show is Red Dwarf. I’m kind of stuck in my ways! But The Big Bang Theory is something that I’ve really enjoyed recently.

Which do you prefer: Board games/card games or television?

We don’t play board games as much as we watch TV, so I’d have to say I enjoy them more as they’re more of a treat. They do bring out my competitive side a bit too much though!

Thank you, Nick…I enjoyed learning more about you. I am so glad you joined me today!

Nick’s Question to readers:

Do you enjoy speculative fiction? Is there a particular type that you prefer and why?

What is the price paid for the creation of a perfect society?

In Whitopolis, a gleamingly white city of the future where illness has been eradicated, shock waves run through the populace when a bedraggled, dirt-stricken boy materialises in the main street. Led by government propaganda, most citizens shun him as a demon, except for Wellesbury Noon – a high school student the same age as the boy.

Upon befriending the boy, Wellesbury feels a connection that he can’t explain – as well as discovering that his new friend comes from a land that is stricken by disease and only has two weeks to live. Why do he and a girl named Ezmerelda Dontible appear to be the only ones who want to help?

As they dig deeper, everything they know is turned on its head – and a race to save one boy becomes a struggle to redeem humanity.

Excerpt:

(This is the opening of the book)

At first no one could explain how the strange boy came to be there in the middle of the street. One minute it was just the gleaming and silent hovercars, the next minute there he was, like a blot on the landscape. One of the vehicles bumped him as he materialised, but it didn’t seem to bother him. That, at least, was no surprise to the crowd of onlookers who quickly gathered around this curiosity.

“Who are you, boy?”

“He just popped out of thin air!”

“What is that dark substance on your skin, and clothes? I’ve never seen the like!”

Mallinger was a sight unlike any ever witnessed by the citizens of this unnaturally clean city. Black streaks of grime marred what would otherwise have been an appealing face. His brown hair hung shoulder-length, lank with grease, and seemed to contain things that were… alive. And his clothing seemed to be one loose thread away from falling apart: he wore a grubby tunic that could have been white in a different millennium, a brown waistcoat that seemed to be made from some sort of muslin cloth, and ill-fitting britches worn to a shine not just at the knees, but over their entire surface.

All were just as dirty as the boy’s face and other areas of skin that could be seen through the various holes in these garments. But of course the onlookers had no words for things like “dirt” and “grease”. The boy seemed just as alien to them as a visitor from the planet Zarglemoof, a place of which they also had no concept, being outside the confines of the land of Harmonia.

The lad was shielding his eyes, as if blinded by his surroundings. Nonetheless, he became aware of a tall and officious-looking man in front of him, who gave the impression of being in charge. He wore an immaculately tailored suit and bowler hat, which were – like all the other citizens’ clothing – all white.

“Where did you come from, boy?” His tone was not unkind.

The boy kept his eyes fixed on his threadbare shoes, as if trying to anchor himself in this unfamiliar environment.

“Fusterbury,” he managed at last, in a voice which seemed too guttural and deep for a boy of his size.

The man frowned. “Where? I know of no such place in the land of Harmonia.”

“Perhaps he’s a devil,” shouted a woman in the crowd. “He should be arrested!”

“Hush!” said the man. “I see no grounds for such an accusation.

“Now tell me, boy,” he said, hunkering down to meet the boy’s eyes. “What is this strange substance on your face and hands?”

The boy rubbed his fingers down his cheek, frowning in confusion. “Well, it’s just… dirt.”

“Dirt?” The man said the word as if trying it out for the very first time. “Is it… a part of your skin?”

“Well, it feels like it is. It’s been there for as long as I can remember.”

Ten Things I Learned On My Writing Journey by Liz Tyner ~ #Giveaway & The Wallflower Duchess

Please help me welcome my friend, Liz Tyner. I LOVE this girl so much!! She’s talented and sweet and funny and smart. What’s not to love? She has some excellent advice for us today. PLUS, she’s giving away a prize!! One lucky commenter will receive a copy of her book,  Wallflower Duchess and a Swag Surprise Gift from RWA17.

https://www.harlequin.com/shop/books/9780373629053_the-wallflower-duchess.html

Ten Things I Learned On My Writing Journey

  1. A novel is a series of mini stories. Little scenes, one leading to the next.
  2. Each scene should move the story forward. You can test that quickly by summarizing, in one sentence, what happened in the scene. Those sentences, read in order, are a novel’s plot.
  3. Something in the scene should make it real or individual. For instance, a character takes a bite of an orange and grabs a napkin.
  4. A scene should have a “sense” included besides visual, such as the taste of the orange, the feel of the juice sticking on the face or the sound of a napkin box falling to the floor.
  5. Usually, the minor characters shouldn’t pull attention from the main characters or plot, but background is very important to create reality for the reader. Try to point out a bit of individuality in each background character and each scene. A chipped tooth on a smile. Straightening a picture of the leaning tower of Pisa.
  6. Boredom is bad. Imagine how many times you walk by pictures on the wall in your home, and no matter how much you liked them at first, you ignore them. Put new art up, and it’s fresh for a while, but then you start ignoring it again. Push yourself to put freshness throughout each book.
  7. No matter how stunningly wonderful your story is, it’s not going to appeal to most people because most people only read one book on average per year. They prefer other things. You’re writing for a select group of people, and one in particular—yourself.
  8. If you want people to read your book, plan to market. With millions of books to choose from, a reader who would like to read your story simply cannot find you without help. Marketing creates a road map to the location of your book. A chance to tell someone who is searching for that style of story where they can locate it.
  9. Don’t compare yourself to people quickly volunteering information about sales and income. People “spin” their writing lives. Most multi-published authors are a “bestselling author” or “prize winning author” in some form or another.
  10. The paperwork on a writing business is a pain, and grows as the business grows. You’re going to have expenses. If you’re serious about writing, you’ll have income taxes to pay. Plus the social security tax is around 15%. Add an agent, and a good rule of thumb is to halve your royalties by 50%. In other words, an agented author with a major publisher will most likely only net about half an advance.
  11. (Bonus) Writing is hard, but most important journeys are And copyrights are scheduled to last about 70 years longer than the life of the author. Which feels good. Now—imagine how many free books those authors starting 100 years from now will have to contend with…

Wow…fabulous, Liz!! Very helpful info. I’m definitely going to keep this handy. Thank you so much for joining me today!

Meet the authors of the Tropical Tryst Boxed Set:

Celeste Hall, author of Just Trust Me What inspired you to choose your setting? One of my favorite vacations, was a boat trip down the Amazon river, to a beautiful eco-friendly resort tucked inside the Peruvian jungle. It was truly amazing. Most of the crazy adventures my heroine endures, are based on my real life experiences. What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? I’d love to see more of the South American jungles, as well as the many nearby isles. Galapagos, Fernando de Noronha, Ilha de Tinharé, and Easter island, just to name a few. It could takes months to properly experience them all. Beautiful scenery aside, I’d really be happy anywhere, so long as I had the right travel companion.  What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? I adore Charlize Theron, but I’m not sure she’d appreciate the situation. Chris Evans would probably make a better choice. I’ve had survival training, so he just needs to be charming and keep me motivated until our rescuers arrive. He seems like a pretty affable guy.  Blurb: When her best friend invites Jenn to spend time in a beautiful Amazon resort, she leaps at the opportunity. Maybe she can finally escape the terror stalking her in New York. She is blindsided by Remi’s surly brother. Ex-marine, now chief in security, Jackson is sexier than ever, but just as unapproachable. When Jenn’s deadly secret unravels, Jackson vows to keep her safe, but to do so, he must gain back the trust he destroyed.

Bio: I am a passionate writer of romance in a variety of sub-genres, but my favorite are probably the paranormal stories. I believe that a great book can do more than offer an afternoon’s pleasure, it can change your life. For that reason, I am absolutely addicted to happy endings. I feel that everyone could use more love and happiness in their lives.  When not writing, I enjoy traveling and spending time outdoors. I also enjoy a variety of artistic mediums, gardening, horseback riding, and geeking out online – especially on Facebook. Carma Haley Shoemaker, author of Sunset Seduction

What inspired you to choose your setting? Choosing Saint Lucia took a bit of time. My location needed to be romantic, as well as serene. My character needed a place to find herself again, but the location also needed to offer a tropical setting that would sweep her off her feet, and lower her defenses, allowing the romance to find her.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? My idea of the perfect tropical getaway would definitely include a balance of adventure and romance. I would truly enjoy spending the day exploring a volcano, or hiking to a hidden waterfall, ending with a romantic, candlelit dinner for two on a secluded sandbar or floating pontoon.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? The celebrity I would most like to be stranded on an island with is Jensen Ackles. Jensen plays Dean Winchester in the television show, Supernatural. He is funny, talented, athletic, and is very easy on the eyes.

Blurb:

Haunted by the image of her cheating husband, Julia Turner decided men weren’t worth her effort. Hoping the tropical sun will burn away the bitterness and depression, Julia embarks on girls’ vacation with friends to re-find happiness. When Julia meets Seth, the perpetual groomsman, neither is prepared for the tide of passion to come. Just what she needed to buoy her self-esteem, lustful desires leave Julia wondering if Seth can bring her back to life.

Whitley Cox, author of Lust Abroad

What inspired you to choose your setting? The hubby and I went to Peru as a part of our 12 countries in 6 months honeymoon and a few terrible things happened to us, so instead of dwelling on it I wanted to put my story to paper, embrace the romantic part of our holiday and find something good to celebrate about our time there. Not everything I wrote is autobiographical, and in order for the story to be exciting I upped the thrill, suspense and drama as well as made the hero and heroine meet and fall in love rather than go there together. I wanted to bring light to a dark part of our holiday.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? Live aboard yacht for four weeks through French Polynesia. Nothing but, sex, scuba diving and sun tanning.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Sir Patrick Stewart. I have a mad crush on the guy.

Blurb

Piper Valentine knows that life is short. Off to Peru to heal, she finds solace in Derrick King, the hot journalist she meets on the airplane. Derrick knows all about loss, too, and his secrets keep him from letting Piper in. Their journey to Machu Picchu quickly turns south as they’re pursued by mysterious gunmen. But Derrick makes her feel safe, even as his lust for her endangers her heart. Is there strength in surrender?

Bio

A West Coast baby born and raised, Whitley is married to her high school sweetheart and together they have a spirited toddler and a fluffy dog. She spends her days making food that gets thrown on the floor, vacuuming Cheerios out from under the couch and making sure that the dog food doesn’t end up in the air conditioner. But when nap time comes, and it’s not quite wine o’clock, Whitley sits down, avoids the pile of laundry on the couch, and writes. A lover of all things decadent; wine, cheese, chocolate and spicy erotic romance, Whitley brings the humorous side of sex, the ridiculous side of relationships and the suspense of everyday life into her stories. With mommy wars, body issues, threesomes, bondage and role playing, these books have everything we need to satisfy the curious kink in all of us.

Alexis Alvarez, author of Hotter in Hawaii

What inspired you to choose your setting? I had agreed to write a book that featured love in the tropics, and I thought, “How far away from the tropics can I get, while still technically fitting into the box set?  How can I make this unquestionably unique?” I decided to strand the lucky couple in the summer desert of Phoenix, Arizona instead of the lush greenery and ocean of Maui…and still have them experience glistening pools, mai-tais, and great sex.  I wanted to show that sometimes, the things you assume are boring and banal can end up having intricate, amazing features that make you love them.  Getting the unexpected can be a gift, not a punishment, and beauty can come from the place you least expect.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? We rented a house near the beach the North shore of Oahu, one of the most beautiful places in the world.  It came complete with a wrecking ball swing. You know, the thing that Miley Cyrus had in her famous video? So naturally, all of us had to take turns on it, swinging [fully clothed] and laughing until our stomachs hurt. That house also had dressers that fell apart when you opened them, a broken ukulele as part of the décor, fewer bedrooms than promised, and a very small bottle of holy water (!) in the spice cabinet.  The sewage tank was overfull, and the ground near it was swelling and swampy. The caretaker who lived in a separate home on the property told us he was not a caretaker, but a wedding planner, so he couldn’t help us with the broken furniture or septic issues. The owner was not reachable by phone. But the beach was amazing – great snorkelling, and we had so much fun laughing together, my family and I. To me, that was the perfect tropical vacation – enjoying a wreck of a place on the best beach in the entire world, with the people who mean the most to me in the entire world.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? If I had to be stranded with a celebrity, I’d pick one of those guys who deliberately get dropped off in the Alaskan wilderness with one sock and a toothpick, and end up building an airplane and communications tower out of ivy and dust while killing mooses with their bare hands to survive. Or maybe Chris Rock. He’s freaking hilarious.  He could make us laugh while we ate coconuts and waited for a cruise ship full of bloated fat sneaker-wearing American tourists to come and save us. Also, could the “island” be “Greece?”  I’ve always wanted to see Greece.  If the answer is yes, then forget Chris Rock [sorry, CR, it’s been real], and instead I’ll take Betty White (I read that she’s ¼ Greek) and also David Sedaris, who is one of the funniest writers alive, and is also half-Greek.

Blurb for Hotter in Hawaii

Harper Bradley is thrilled to land the job of a lifetime, photographing a brand new Hawaiian resort. She’s working with sexy Zach Taylor, which would be awesome if he weren’t such a player…and if he hadn’t turned her down in an embarrassing episode months ago. When things go awry, starting with an emergency landing in Phoenix, Harper discovers there’s more to Zach than quips and abs. But is this commitment-phobic playboy ready for love?

Bio

Alexis Alvarez is an author, photographer, and digital designer who loves writing steamy romances.  Her female heroines are always strong, intelligent women who fall for the sexiest guy around…and get the happy-ever-after ending of their dreams.

Alexis is a wife and mom, a former chemical engineer, a dachshund-whisperer — wait, that’s a lie. The dachshund usually does the exact opposite of what he’s told.

Do you like contemporary romance with steam and humor?  Darker BDSM/erotica novels with fascinating psychological insights?  Alexis has you covered. She writes in both genres. One really cool thing about Alexis is that she’s a friendly author who loves meeting new people on Facebook. Please come on by and say hello. Thanks, and happy reading!

Meet the authors of the Tropical Tryst Boxed Set:

EmKay Connor, author of Worth the Risk

What inspired you to choose your setting?  Who hasn’t dreamed of running away to a remote tropical island to escape all of their troubles. Sun, sand, umbrella drinks and hot guys. No shirt, no shoes, no problems!

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway?  My idea of the perfect tropical getaway is a modern resort within walking distance of the beach. I like my creature comforts–A/C, wi-fi, room service–even in paradise!

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with?  Johnny Depp, but he must be wearing his Cap’n Jack Sparrow duds and have a generous supply of whiskey.

Blurb

Five years living on a tiny Caribbean island after fleeing the political scandal that ruined her life has dulled Dara Lockwood’s anger but not her disillusioned distrust. The occasional one night stand is working just fine until the arrival of Jack Wyatt. Something about the tall, dark and seriously sexy man makes Dara want to trust him, not only with her secrets but with her heart.

Bio

EmKay Connor is the award-winning author of sexy, sassy contemporary romantic fiction infused with quirky humor and engaging characters. Elana Brooks, author of Homecoming

What inspired you to choose your setting? My husband and I took a cruise last January to celebrate our 25th anniversary.  It was lovely to take a week out of our busy lives to spend all day, every day together relaxing and having fun.  A lot of the places and incidents in my story are based directly on things we did and saw. Although with a lot of emotional drama added, of course!

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? I would love to take a voyage in a sailing ship across the South Pacific, visiting lots of tiny islands away from the usual tourist destinations.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Lin-Manuel Miranda, so I could convince him my books would be the perfect source material for his next musical :).

Blurb

After Juanita is deported, her sister concocts a daring plan to smuggle her home aboard a cruise ship. She and Juanita will switch places, while her friend Ryan poses as Juanita’s boyfriend and accompanies her back to the United States. But when sparks ignite between Juanita and Ryan, things get complicated. Can a lie built on water, wind, and sunshine grow into a truth strong enough to endure once they reach dry land?

Bio

Elana Brooks is the author of the science fiction romance series “The Covenant of the Rainbow.” Book 1, Red Sky in the Morning, will be available in Fall 2017, with Book 2, Orange Blossom Special, following in Winter 2018, and Book 3, A Yellow Wood, in Spring 2018. Elana lives with her husband of twenty-five years in Houston, Texas.  She went on her first cruise two years ago with her whole family, and enjoyed it so much she immediately planned another with just her husband.  She’s already counting the days until she can sail again!

Jan O’Hara, author of Cold and Hottie

What inspired you to choose your setting? Nostalgia and one component of the writer’s arsenal. By pure chance, when the opportunity came along to write this novella, I had just returned from a Jamaican getaway with my husband and two adult children. I was conscious of time slipping away, and that we four may never again be together in such a spectacular location. Using Jamaica for my setting is one way of hanging onto those feelings of connection and trust. While we were there, the resort handled several business events, and my writerly brain responded by noting specific details and beginning to ask “what if” questions. For me, these early moments of a story’s birth are magical, and vastly superior to most travel souvenirs. (Especially those of the parasitic variety.)

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? Access to swimming 24/7, an ocean as a backdrop, plus the ability to be outdoors with little more than sunscreen, a book and a towel. I also love unlimited quantities of fresh, exotic fruit.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Am I worried about survival? If yes, please give me Les Stroud of Survivorman, or someone of his ilk. If I’m safe, then I’d love to spend time with Malala Yousafzai. She amazes me in that she’s so young, yet possesses superhuman amounts of wisdom and resilience. She also straddles cultures with an effortless grace.

Blurb

Finn Wakefield thought he understood the reason for his breakup with Olivia Prosser. Now, during a corporate retreat in Jamaica and in his role as her new boss, new information comes to light. Not only might Liv be innocent, the party who framed her might be continuing their sabotage. But Liv shows no interest in righting the wrongs of the past. Is she over Finn, or protecting the saboteur? Either way, Finn can’t let it go.

Bio

A former family physician who once provided birth-to-death healthcare, Jan O’Hara has left medicine behind and now spends her days torturing people on paper. (See? Win-win scenarios really do exist.) She writes for the popular blog Writer Unboxed and lives in Alberta, Canada.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? I want to go to Maldives, I’ve seen pictures and videos and it looks so gorgeous! Also it’s not the typical going to the Caribbean which most people do! What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Definitely Johnny Depp!!!

Blurb:

Samantha came from a poorer background. Lord Eric Godfrey is British royalty and a billionaire. Both of them are attracted to each other but have their guards up, too. Eric doesn’t trust the poor, especially if he thinks someone is a gold digger. Samantha doesn’t trust the rich and powerful. But will they be able to put that all behind them and accept one another? Susan Ann Wall – Off Balance (Superstitious Brides Romance #8)

What inspired you to choose your setting? I recently went on a 7 night Caribbean cruise with my mom. It was so relaxing and beautiful, exploring the islands, enjoying the water and fresh sea air, and there was so much romance happening on the ship. Lots of newlyweds, some ladies on a bachelorette party…it just seemed like the perfect setting for a couple to fall in love.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? I’d love to just find a small cabin on a beach where a sexy cabana boy brings you food and drinks without needing to be beckoned, where you can socialize with others when you want to but where it is quiet and peaceful otherwise.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Oh, Tom Hiddleston, no question. And he can talk all he wants, particularly if he tells me how smart and beautiful and amazing I am…over and over and over…

Blurb

Sometimes, to find your center, you must collide with the one who throws you off balance.

Along his journey to enlightenment, Haven Masters has come across many bumps and roadblocks, but never once has anything or anyone thrown him off balance the way Heather Wolfe does. While on a tropical cruise retreat, all Haven can do is look for his center again and hope that he finds it with Heather.

Bio

Big dreamer and certifiable overachiever Susan Ann Wall embraces life at full speed and volume. She’s a beer and tea snob, can be bribed with dark chocolate, and the #1 thing on her bucket list is to be the center of a Bon Jovi flash mob. Susan is a USA Today bestselling, multi-genre author of racy, rule-breaking romance and women’s fiction. Her bragging rights include the Fighting Back for Love series, Puget Sound ~ Alive With Love series, Superstitious Brides Romance series, Sunset Valley Women’s Fiction series, and Devon Taggart Suspense series. She also likes to boast about her three maniacal children, two amazing rescue dogs, and a happily ever after that started while serving in the U.S. Army and has spanned over two decades (which is crazy since she’s not a day over 29). In her next life, Susan plans to be a 5 foot 10, size 8 rock star married to a chiropractor and will not be terrified of large bridges, spiders, or quiet people (shiver).

Meet the authors of the Tropical Tryst Boxed Set:

CJ Matthew, author of A Major Affair, The Colonel’s Daughters novella 1.5

What inspired you to choose your setting? The garden isle of Kauai, in Hawaii, was chosen for Ed and DeAnna’s tropical tryst in A Major Affair because the breathtakingly beautiful island offers such a wide variety of natural landmarks. I’ve vacationed in Hawaii several times and Kauai is by far my favorite locale.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? The perfect tropical getaway is an island, or feels like one, with amazing natural sights. The lone hotel or resort offers luxurious accommodations, hedonistic-level pampering, a wide variety of sports and entertainment, and discrete privacy.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Stranded on an island…if I ever, much later, wanted to be rescued, I’d choose to be castaway with Harrison Ford. The man is sexy, romantic, and has a terrific sense of humor. Those Indiana Jones skills would pay off when we eventually decided to move our torrid love affair off the island and to a more populated venue.

Blurb for A Major Affair:

Quinn’s dream mission: spend a week of leave snooping around a luxury Kauai resort, enjoying the amenities, then report back to a skeptical investor. DeAnna’s nightmare mission: spend a week snooping around a luxury Kauai resort, enjoying the amenities, then report back to her employer. Two people on different sides who never expected to fall in love.

About the Author:

CJ Matthew grew up in an Air Force family living all over the US and around the world, which provided terrific ideas for future books, and the chance to meet real-life heroes/heroines in uniforms and flight-suits. When she isn’t writing, or reading romances, CJ enjoys spending time with her two grown children, their spouses, her brilliant grandson, and her feisty cat, Max. Schedule permitting, she loves to travel, but Max flatly refuses to leave home.

Caitlyn Lynch, author of Finding Cory

What inspired you to choose your setting? A family holiday to Airlie Beach, a town known as the Gateway to the Reef, two years ago. While there we took a boat trip that took in Hamilton Island, Daydream Island and Whitehaven Beach. I fell in love with the islands and knew I had to write a story about them… in fact Finding Cory is planned to be the first of a series set on Sunfish Island Resort, which is based very heavily on Daydream Island.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? Anywhere with palm trees, hammocks and strawberry daiquiris! I’m lucky enough to live in the sub-tropics near Brisbane in sunny Queensland, Australia, so sunshine and the beach are probably things I take for granted.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Jeremy Renner. Not only is he nice to look at, but he’s a builder/renovator in his spare time so he could build us a fabulous house to live in!

Blurb

Olivia Stratton had it all; a high-powered job in New York, a perfect boyfriend, a perfect life… until it all came crashing down her ears. Being offered the opportunity to live on a beautiful tropical island resort for a year as their marketing manager is her chance to start afresh, where nobody knows about her past. Romantic entanglements are definitely something she plans to avoid, but when she meets Cory, the resort’s too-handsome-to-be-real entertainment coordinator, sparks fly and Olivia finds herself swept right out of her Jimmy Choos and into Cory’s arms.

Bio

Caitlyn Lynch is an Australian mother of two who has always enjoyed reading and writing romantic fiction. Happily married to her very own tall, dark and handsome for 14 years and counting, she draws on a rich imagination to create new scenarios for her steamy contemporary romances.
She has twice been selected as a finalist for Romance Writers Australia short story anthologies in 2017.

Karen M. Bryson, author of Brooklyn Winters

What inspired you to choose your setting? Growing up, my family took yearly vacations to Sanibel Island, and it’s always held a place in my heart. It’s one of my favorite places in the world.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? A white sand beach, a lounge chair, a cocktail in one hand and a great novel in the other.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Do I have to pick a celebrity? I’d most want to be stranded with my husband.

Blurb

Stacy-Deanne, author of Murder with a Kiss

What inspired you to choose your setting? I wanted a setting that was not only tropical but also mysterious. Jamaica has many hidden elements, and I was interested in learning more about it. I enjoy writing about unfamiliar places because it makes the story more exciting for me if I’m learning as I go along. Since Jamaica has this thrilling aura about it, I knew it would be a great setting for a steamy romantic suspense.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? Jamaica. LOL! No surprise, huh? It’s funny because I have always wanted to go to England so never really envisioned a tropical vacation. Even though I’m not a beach person or swimmer, Jamaica definitely fascinates me. Activities are endless so you’d never be bored and there is something in Jamaica for everyone including the wonderful sights, annual festivals and food.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? I’d say Jonathan Rhys Meyers. I’ve always liked him but since The Tudors, I’ve really been hooked!

Blurb

When her twin brother Kirby is murdered, Kayla heads to Kingston, Jamaica to find out who would want her brother dead. Kayla teams up with Kirby’s best friend, Tate, who seems just as anxious for answers as she does.  Kayla struggles with an attraction to the sexy tour guide, but loses the battle while Tate introduces her to the sensuous allure of Jamaica.
Bio

Holly Cortelyou, author of Two Reckless Hearts (A Barrett Ridge Novella)

What inspired you to choose your setting? I’ve always daydreamed of the Caribbean’s silky, warm waters and the magical steel drums dancing in the balmy night air. So it was fun to whip up a make-believe tropical island off the coast of St. Lucia for the luxurious resort in Two Reckless Hearts.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? Beyond the “Must-Have’s” of my hunky partner, pink sand beaches, and an endless pina colada, I’d love to parasail, frolic with the dolphins, and zipline through the tropical forest with birds and monkeys screeching from the bamboo and mango trees…as long as those monkeys are far enough away they can’t jump me as I whiz by!

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? George Clooney, Chris Hemsworth and Jason Momoa would have to have a…shirtless battle to win my hand. Ah, but then Dwayne Johnson’s raunchy sense of humor might win the day. Come to think of it, making me choose is just down right mean!

Blurb:

Five sultry nights. Two reckless hearts. One family wedding. What could go wrong? Jami Barrett’s been jilted by her fiancé, and she must endure her sister’s crazy Caribbean wedding. Now, her arch rival, Beck Kavanagh, has crashed the party! With a make-or-break deal and her loyalty in the balance, Jami’s feeling the pressure…and the heat of her hidden desire. Will steamy island nights tempt enemies to become lovers?

Bio:

Holly Cortelyou is a romance author who pens sweet and spicy small town, contemporary romances as well as supernatural and paranormal romances. On any given day Holly Cortelyou can be found sipping coffee, perusing Facebook and surfing for gossip on royals, college football (Go Ducks!), knitting, and ghosts! Holly’s living her own Happily Ever After with an uber-handy, broad-shouldered and delicious husband, a sweet silver lab and a fluffball kitty in sun-kissed Southern Oregon. She has hazel eyes, a goofy sense of humor and all the rest is subject to change without notice.

Meet the authors of the Tropical Tryst Boxed Set:

Nicole Morgan, author of Swept Away

What inspired you to choose your setting? Dreams of someday getting to visit there. 🙂

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? A place that has no wifi, where you are forced to enjoy your surroundings and work is not an option.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Hmm… now that is one tough question. There are so many dashing and devastatingly handsome men that I wouldn’t mind being stranded with, but out of all of them I’d probably have to say Shemar Moore of Criminal Minds fame.

Blurb for Swept Away

When Felicia and Trevor Jenning’s hope for the future are shattered by cruel fate, the two soul mates find their love is put to the ultimate test. With each passing day, resentment builds and the two grow further apart until they eventually drift into different worlds that don’t include one another. Will they be lost from one another forever? Or will circumstances intervene and bring them back together once again?

Bio

Nicole Morgan is a USA Today and International best-selling author who has written romance in various genres of romance. Many of her novels are erotic romance, which more often than not has a suspenseful back story. Basically erotic romance mixed with your good old-fashioned whodunits. While she’s written everything from contemporary to paranormal her leading men will more than likely be wearing a uniform of some kind. From military to police officers, she has a love for writing about those who protect and serve. It all began with her very first novel about Navy SEALs – which turned into a fan favorite series – and continues with her more recent releases. When you’re reading a book by Ms. Morgan you’ll be sure to find a few twists and turns you were not expecting.

She is a proud member of Writerspace, a Romance Books ‘4’ Us Gold Author, as well as being a Sweet and Sexy Diva. Additionally, you will find Nicole writing under the names of Taylor Brooks and Nicki Day. Nicole also mentors authors, offers administrative services and is the founder of Romance Collections. Find out more about Nicole and her books by visiting her website, or any of her social networks.

Linda O’Connor, author of Perfectly Skeptical (Perfectly Series Novella)

What inspired you to choose your setting? My novella, Perfectly Skeptical, is set in Little Cayman Island. I’ve been to Grand Cayman Island twice, and have had wonderfully relaxing vacations. For this story, I used a lot of what I experienced on Grand Cayman – the snorkeling, the flowers, the trees, the people, and the gorgeous beaches – but I wanted a small town vibe so I thought the smaller Little Cayman Island would be perfect.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? My perfect getaway includes sitting on a sandy beach, doing nothing except watching waves roll onto the shore (under an umbrella, and wearing a wide-brimmed hat and SPF-50). 😀

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? I’d like to be stranded with James Corden. He’s so funny and an amazing singer – I’d be able to laugh and have music!

Blurb for Perfectly Skeptical

Dr. Brianna Scott looked forward to sleeping away her staycation, until a lucky windfall meant an upgrade to palm trees, an ocean view . . . and the sexy Dr. Matt Gaelen. She’ll have fun, but can a holiday fling really turn into a soul mate for life? Doubtful.

Matt has no radar for sniffing out gold-diggers and protecting his heart. Until now. Brianna is more turned off than turned on by his wealth. What are his chances of getting her to overlook it? Dubious at best. Improbable and iffy – the typical path to love.

Bio

Linda O’Connor started writing a few years ago when she needed a creative outlet other than subtly rearranging the displays at the local home décor store. It turns out she loves writing romantic comedies and has a few more stories to tell. When not writing, she’s a physician at an Urgent Care Clinic (well, even when she is writing she’s a physician, and it shows up in her stories 😀 ). She hangs out at www.lindaoconnor.net.

Courtney Hunt, author of Desire a Bridesmaid, 4th in the Always a Bridesmaid series

What inspired you to choose your setting? My honeymoon. We cruised to St. Martin, St. Croix, and St. Thomas. I wanted elements of all three islands so I created Eden Ilse, the setting for Desire a Bridesmaid.

What is your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? A beach chair, an umbrella, and a stack of romance novels. As a mom of a very active third grader, I rarely get to read in my beach chair anymore.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Oh, it’s tough to pick just one of my crushes. But, I think I’ll Dan Stevens. I’ve had a crush on him since Downton Abbey and saw Beauty and the Beast four times in the theatre.

Blurb:

Five years ago, aimless drifter Carter Prescott and recent divorcee Anna Westbrook shared one wild, wicked night on Eden Isle. Now, after a hurricane flattened the island, Carter transformed his ruined resort into the most beautiful in the Caribbean.  When professional bridesmaid Anna arrives in Eden Isle, Carter needs her help to publicize his new destination wedding package. Will Anna and Carter discover that one perfect night in paradise will never be enough?

Desire a Bridesmaid is a standalone novella in the Always a Bridesmaid contemporary romance series about professional bridesmaids finding their own happily ever afters. If you enjoy witty dialogue, unforgettable characters, and steamy love scenes, you’ll love Courtney Hunt’s light-hearted Always a Bridesmaid series.

Liz Gavin, author of Tristan

What inspired you to choose your setting? I grew up in Brazil and every chance I had I’d spend time in the coast of Santa Catarina State because it’s simply gorgeous. When I decided to write this summer novella, setting it there was a no-brainer.
What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? An enclosed little white-sand beach framing a calm turquoise sea.
What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Only one? Lol Oh, well, if I must… Seriously, it’d Bono, U2’s singer. I’m a huge fan of his music and humanitarian work, so I’d have tons to talk about with him, if we were stranded on an island.

Blurb

Fifteen years ago, Izzie Anderson betrayed Tristan Knight and ripped out his heart. Yet she lied to protect him. Now she needs Tristan to save her son.

Tristan Knight mended his tattered heart in a secluded beach in the Southern coast of Brazil. When Izzie walks into Chez Nous Bistro one evening, he realizes her betrayal left him heartless. Can two damaged souls heal each other? Or are there wrongs that can never be righted?
Bio

International best-selling author Liz Gavin, has accomplished much in her short career. Her books have made to #1 and Top Five best-selling ranks in her home country Brazil and others as diverse as Japan, the UK and the US; both in English and Portuguese, collecting 5 and 4-star reviews. Nominated for a Summer Indie Book Award in 2016, and again in 2017, this RWA member constantly seeks new opportunities to improve her craft. This thirst for knowledge propelled Liz to leave the comforts of family and friends in Brazil and move to California to pursue a Master’s degree in late 2015. She lives in sunny SoCal, where she’s researching the writing process, for her thesis, in hopes to figure out why she creates in English instead of her native Portuguese.
Liz Gavin writes in contemporary, paranormal, and historical genres. In her sexy stories, one finds smart, independent women, who don’t need rescuing by knights in shining armor, but indulge in steamy action with swoony Alpha males with big hearts. She also writes about women discovering their sexuality and finding happiness in unconventional setups.

Victoria Pinder, author of Tempting James

What inspired you to choose your setting? I made up an island called Grand Bohemia because I wanted to have a specific type of hotel with conference capabilities, set on a beach and the setup wasn’t exactly to life. So rather than day trip from Miami to the Bahamas which might be fun to do, I just fictionalized it. (I live in Miami so there is the $49 boat I could take.) Now the beginning parts where they are in Miami, those are all real settings as I can drive and notice things.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? I already live on a beach in Miami. It’s pretty nice but I never really go out and enjoy a beach. If I’m stressed though, it’s nice that it’s there to look at. So the word that catches my eye in the question is ‘getaway.’ This means I don’t have to do anything but put my feet up, read, and have no responsibilities that will need my full attention. So if I’m in a hotel where someone is bringing my food, cleaning up after I eat, making my bed… this sounds like paradise right now.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Steve Amell. I’m just catching up on the Arrow as I skipped it for a few years. Now that I’m #TeamArrow, his character spent a lot of time on an island. He had to have picked up a few things on what we’re to do.

Blurb for Tempting James:

She’s on the run. He’s a distraction. They’re begging for trouble. James Clancy made a promise, and he intends to keep it. But protecting his former Marine buddy’s sister proves to be more than he bargained for. He’s already been burned once. He’s not about to let that happen again. The last thing Scarlett Hawke needs is a babysitter. What she needs is a husband, and a way out. When she meets James, she knows he oh-so-wrong for her, but resisting him might be the hardest thing she’s ever had to do… until she discovers who he really is and just how dangerous that can be. Will Scarlett let love happen or will it only make her complicated life worse?

Lena Bourne, author of Rider’s Fall (A Viper’s Bite MC Novella)

What inspired you to choose your setting? My story is set on the tropical beaches of Brazil, and I chose this setting because I really want to visit Brazil one day. This way I get to imagine the setting without actually having to go.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? I would love to stay in one of those bungalows over the water, reading and spending some well-deserved alone time with my significant other.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? That’s a tough one! I’m going to choose Tom Hardy, since I’m a huge fan right now. But there’s a line of others on the waiting list.

Blurb for Rider’s Fall (A Viper’s Bite MC Novella)

Chloe swore off men forever when she escaped to Brazil to start a new life, because her old one was destroyed by an ex. But when the orphanage she volunteers at is threatened, she’s forced to accept the help of a hot as sin biker. But Rider is a man with no home and no wish to have one. Will the love they find in each other be strong enough to change any of that?

Bio

Lena Bourne writes steamy, suspenseful romantic stories, which include MC romances, dark romances, military romances, and everything in between. Hot bedroom scenes and fast-paced, action packed plots are Lena’s specialty. Her heroines are strong, sassy and independent, and her heroes are usually rough-around-the-edges alpha bad boys whose heart is in the right place.

Author Interview with Mary Morgan ~ New Release: QUEST OF A WARRIOR

Today’s guest, Mary Morgan is sharing a new release, a giveaway, and a great interview!

Welcome, Mary! Thank you for joining me.

Are there any tricks or habits you use when creating a story?

I always begin each story with a brand new journal. It has become a tradition to find the one that feels right. This is where I put all the pertinent character(s) information, settings, and any plot ideas. It’s also a form of reference material and word count. I start with a basic outline, but my characters always take me in another direction. I might begin as the “captain at the wheel,” but in the end, they are the ones guiding the tale.

What’s the main thing that you could get rid of in your life that would give you more writing time?

Marketing my book! It can drain the creativity side tremendously. Yet, after three years, I have found the balance and strive to maintain time to write every day. When I don’t, I find I’m a cranky author. All these ideas/voices are sitting there, so I need to keep the wheels of creativity flowing.

What is one word you would use to describe yourself? What is one word you think others might use to describe you?

Me: Passionate

Others: Supportive

What’s your favorite book of all time and why? What’s your favorite childhood book?

“Hawaii” by James Michener. After reading his book as a young teen, I became fascinated with historical novels. His story launched me on a lifetime of adventures within history.

I was obsessed with the Nancy Drew books as a child. It was a delight to read about a girl solving mysteries. Devoured them all, so there’s no favorite. I consider the entire set as one. 🙂

What actors would you like in the main roles if your book were made into a movie?

There’s only one actor I’ve envisioned for Conn in “Quest of a Warrior,” and that’s Alexander Skarsgard. From the moment Conn stepped forth in my first book, “Dragon Knight’s Sword,” I saw this actor. It’s the way Alexander moves, and those eyes say it all.

What is your favorite quote?

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” ~Eleanor Roosevelt

Thanks again, Mary. I enjoyed the interview. I love that quote. And, Alexander Skarsgard….sigh… 🙂

Check out Mary’s giveaway and her book…

“You met them in the Order of the Dragon Knights. Now, journey to the realm of the Fae and witness their legends!”

Fenian Warrior, Conn MacRoich has traveled the earth for thousands of years, guarding the realm between mortal and Fae. His deeds are legendary. Yet, one mistake will force him on a journey to fix a broken time-line. However, on Conn’s quest, he must face a human female who will eventually bring this ancient warrior to his knees.

When Ivy O’Callaghan inherits her uncle’s estate, she never imagines there will be more secrets to unravel, including the one she hides from the world. With the help of a mysterious stranger, she learns to trust and step out of the shadows. However, nothing prepares Ivy when she learns Conn’s true identity.

As the loom of fate weaves a thread around the lovers from two different worlds, will the sacrifices they make lead them to love? Or will their secrets destroy and separate them forever?

Excerpt:

Conn fought the bolt of desire spearing a path throughout his body. Her touch spoke volumes—an invitation to taste. Never had he longed to kiss a human like this wee lass. His heart beat loudly, and he found himself unable to move. She was a Goddess of the moonlight. It danced off her face and hair, and he trembled before her. Ivy’s fingers traced down his cheek and across his lips. He was helpless to contain the growl that escaped from his mouth.

The rush of passion overtook him, and Conn slammed the door on his mind. Grasping Ivy around the waist, he hoisted her up on top of the bridge. Her lips parted on a sigh, and he lowered his mouth to feast on something he dared not take. The first brush of her soft lips against his own ignited a hunger he could no longer contain. Taking her moan deep into him, Conn glorified in the sensation of her mouth—one filled with a honeyed sweetness.

The Fae warrior became just a man for the first time. Something primal burst within him. Emotions he had never felt left him dizzy, spiraling to a physical plane. He craved them all. His lips seared a course down her neck, to her throat, and then recaptured the velvet warmth of her mouth.

The job should have been easy—patrol a swank beach that serves as a backyard for Maui’s rich, kick out the riffraff, and get a tan in the process. Excerpt:

“Why John Deacon, Sam?” Grady’s hands tightened on the steering wheel.

I threw my hands up. “It could be Jesus Christ himself signing my paycheck and I’d still be doing it for the same reasons! The job works for my family. What is your problem with John Deacon? And don’t tell me nothing—you owe me more than that.”

“Maybe I’m just jealous.” Grady stared ahead. “Like you said.”

My stomach did a loop. “Don’t use your charm on me, I’m immune—”

“You think I’m charming?”

“Hell no, I don’t! And particularly not when you’re avoiding my question.”

“But you said I had charm.” He tilted his head and gave me a long, sly look from the corner of his eyes. His teeth flashed white from that tanned face and I nearly had to fan myself when I realized I loved the feeling of Grady teasing me.

I threw my hands up in the air. “I give up!”

He wanted to talk about confusing? All I knew about Grady prior to this day was that he was six-foot-two of gorgeous and about as warm as a polar bear on the North Pole in January. And now—

Interview with Author Cj Fosdick ~ New Release: “The Accidental Stranger”

I am pleased to welcome Cj Fosdick who is sharing an interview and her latest release.

*** Cj’s first book was a Golden Quill Finalist and a Top 10 Finisher for Best Romance Novel in Preditors & Editors.

And…

The Accidental Stranger received an ‘excellence’ rating from InD’Tale Magazine and a fabulous review. Here is an excerpt from the review: (Only 23 out of 89 books in May earned that rating.)
“With fascinating twists and turns, leading up to a wonderful surprising ending the reader is kept well engaged by the deep and interesting characters that make up this unusual story. Well written and skillfully done. “The Accidental Stranger” is a page turner. Well worth reading!” Gwenellen Tarbet of InD’Tale Magazine, May issue

Give-away!!!! A Free eBook of The Accidental Stranger with comment and FB friend at https://www.facebook.com/cjfosdickauthor/

Please tell us about you and your book…

1. Novel Intentions? Who knew when I wrote a short story for a Writer’s Conference that it would lead to a book trilogy? My future publisher from WildRose Press was in the audience when the Laura Awards were distributed at the Women Writing the West Conference in Kansas City in 2013. The competition judge had submitted a page-long letter begging me to turn “The Teacup” into a novel. Seventeen months later, the story, now named “THE ACCIDENTAL WIFE,” was released in print and eBook by WRP, Amazon and several other distributors. Book two in the series, “THE ACCIDENTAL STRANGER” was released in January and book three in the Accidental Series is now a work in progress.
There was no question about the series genre. I was a fanatic reader of historical romance, suspense and family sagas and drew inspiration from the way Diana Gabaldon combined all in her time-travel “Outlander” series. (A heroine placed in a time-travel scenario is automatically conflicted as she is pulled into the emotional force of two worlds to discover the power of love.)

2. Any habits you use when creating a story? Long showers and water aerobics at a health club seem to lubricate the muse as I daydream about “what if “scenarios.

3. What book have you read that you wish you had written? Besides “Outlander” for obvious reasons, I also loved “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee.

4. What do you dislike that most people wouldn’t understand? Eggs. I was born hating the sight, taste, texture and smell of fried or scrambled eggs.

5. What’s the main thing you could get rid of in your life that would give you more writing time? The easy answer would be television. More complicated would be the necessity for social media. (I’d love to have a clone or a PA who could put marketing on autopilot for me.)

6. What is the one word you would use to describe yourself? Emotional. What would others use to describe you? Curious or Talented?

7. Favorite book of all time? Like children, hard to choose favorites. Besides the two already mentioned, I loved “Gone With The Wind”—book and movie for history, romance, drama, and characters you loved…and loved to hate.

8. What do you want readers to come away with after reading your book? People in every era face the same conflicts and diversity and are empowered and changed by the forces of love.

9. Actors you would like in the main roles if your book was made into a movie? Aiden Turner (Poldark) and a red haired Jennifer Lawrence.

10. Would you rather have a bad review or no review? No Review would be less emotional.

11. Genre you’ve never written that you would like to tackle? More like an era—WWI or II.

12. Favorite quote? “Well-behaved women seldom make history.” (Same for book heroines.)

13. If you were stranded on a deserted island and you could have 3 objects, what would they be? A motorboat, GPS, and a case of Moscato.

14. What celebrity would you like to be stranded with? Actor Aiden Turner

15. Your most prized material possession? A bracelet of woven tail strands of my 3 favorite horses (now in horse heaven.) I raised and trained wild, domestic and rescue horses and gave summer riding lessons for years.

16. Favorites:
Movie—Last of the Mohicans
Music—Enya (Celtic)
Place you visited—Britain & Ireland
Place you’d like to visit—Scotland
TV show from childhood—Howdy Doody
TV show from adulthood—Survivor
Food—Fish/pizza/chocolate
Sports Team—Duo allegiance: Vikings & Packers
Which do you prefer: Board games/card games or TV? I love all three, but watch too much TV!

Thanks for joining us today, Cj! Ha, I also LOVE Gone with the Wind. And, I watch too much TV. AND, I love the Packers. Look at all we have in common! 😀

BLURB:

Jessica Brewster is being watched…and things go missing from the romote Wyoming home she shares with her toddler. In a freak accident, she shoots the bearded thief stalking her before she recognizes the mesmerizing green eyes that belong to the only man she ever loved.
Has Mitch bridged time to find her? In a race to save his life and change hers forever, she takes him into her home and heart. But his memory loss and puzzling clues curry doubt and expose mystery and danger. Is he truly her son’s father or an irresistible stranger in her arms?

EXCERPT:

I screamed as the gun exploded in my hand and fell to the ground. The bear moving toward Scout dropped, and I raced to scoop up my son before he toppled into the cold stream. Cradling my whimpering child, I ventured closer and could see at once that it was no bear I shot. A man in a bearskin poncho lay on his side. A mass of dark matted hair covered the side of his face that wasn’t blooming with blood, running down his cheek, pooling in his ear and staining his thick beard.
“Is he, is he dead?” I whispered.
Chuck fumbled for a pulse and we all started when he groaned and his eyes fluttered open.
Green! His eyes were green. The fear in them registered with me as he searched our faces. A flash of memories washed over me and my heart began to thump wildly. I set Scout down when my legs crumpled beneath me as I sagged in the snow and my bare fingers reached out to staunch the dripping blood.
So red against the white snow. His eyes, so…green. Every shade in a spectrum of emotion raced through me; joy, frustration…anger. I knew only one man who owned those eyes. Had he come back for me? Did I shoot the only man I ever loved?

Author Interview with Elaine Calloway ~ New Release: No Grits No Glory #Giveaway

Please help me welcome Elaine Calloway…

Please tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? Where do you live now? Family? Pets?

Hi and thanks for having me here! I’m originally from New Orleans, which I believe shaped who I became as a writer. I now reside in metro Atlanta, Georgia with my husband and very spoiled dog, a black lab mix. I have 3 grown step-kids, so the hubby and I enjoy our empty nest while we’re still able to see and get together with family since everyone lives in the metro Atlanta area.

Where did you get the idea for NO GRITS NO GLORY and why did you choose this genre?

The original nugget for the first book in my Southern Ghosts Series came from an offhand conversation. My sister-n-law’s mother owns a rental apartment in metro Atlanta, and at one time or another every family member has lived there. Aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, etc. Some lived there for a few months; some lived for several years. When my niece mentioned she would be moving in there for a few months before she got married, I remember thinking, “What if those walls could talk? All those generations of family living there. What would the walls say?” and that became the start of NO GRITS NO GLORY.

As far as picking the genre (romantic suspense/ghosts/paranormal), I think it really picked me! Growing up in New Orleans and being surrounded by Gothic architecture, Voodoo history and cemeteries definitely contributed to my wanting to write about otherworldly and paranormal things.

What book have you read that you wish you had written?

Anything by Dennis Lehane or Cornelia Funke. Both of them have such vivid characters and settings, and they have a way with words that gives music to the story. Dennis Lehane’s Patrick McKenzie & Gennaro crime series and Cornelia Funke’s Inkheart series are two of my favorites.

Do you have another occupation, other than writer? If so, what is it and do you like it?

Sort of. I’m a technical writer by day, and a fiction writer by lunch hour, night and weekend. Basically, I take complex software and create user manuals that simplify how to use the software for a living. It’s dull, but it pays the bills! I also do speaking and teaching gigs, helping other writers learn to write their book, stay motivated, and then how to self-publish their books. I do enjoy this immensely and hope to eventually do more of this along with full-time fiction writing.

What’s the main thing that you could get rid of in your life that would give you more writing time?

My 9-5 job, no doubt. While I do have generous vacation, the traffic and time spent having to concentrate on tech stuff and then switch over to creativity is a difficult balance. Plus, just the general stress of corporate life doesn’t help the creativity.

What do you want readers to come away with after they read NO GRITS NO GLORY?

Hmm, good question. I suppose I want them to come away with an open mind to the possibilities of the paranormal. I’ve loved ghost stories as long as I can remember, but mine have mystery/humor/paranormal elements, not horror. I want readers to enjoy the book and learn more about my favorite place on Earth, Savannah, where the book is set.

What actors would you like in the main roles if your book were made into a movie?

Ha ha! I actually have a Pinterest board for every book I write, so the photos can be found here: https://www.pinterest.com/elainecalloway/no-grits-no-glory-bk-1-southern-ghosts-series/.
To sum up, Linda Fiorentino for Brianna, Eric McCormack or Tom Cruise as Steven, James McAvoy as Declan, and Ed Begley Jr. as Begley.
For my writing process, I typically automatically pick either an actor or someone I know with the look/expressions I want for the characters. Then I add the photos to Pinterest and that keeps me inspired. I’m not a huge Tom Cruise fan, but Eric McCormack wasn’t my ideal pic either, so I kind of combined the two into my own visual to write the Steven character.

Who is the most famous person you have ever met?

I had the chance to meet John Lithgow when I was a teenager and worked at a movie theater that hosted a premiere of The Manhattan Project. He and several producers attended.

We also held a premier for Spacecamp the same night, so I was able to meet Lea Thompson.

How did you come up with the title?

It was a pun on the ole saying, ‘no guts, no glory’ but the book also has some Southern humor and scenes with grits (a popular breakfast item in the South) so the title seemed to fit perfectly.

One humorous note, though! I didn’t think everyone would know what grits were, but I never expected grits to mean different things in different parts of the world. I wrote another funny blog post here about how ‘grits’ in South Wales is not what anyone thinks it is!  http://www.elainecalloway.com/the-lowdown-on-grits/
Your favorite…

Movie – The Princess Bride, Secondhand Lions, Under the Tuscan Sun. Not sure I can ever narrow down favorite movies to just one!
Place you’ve visited – Savannah, Georgia
Place you’d like to visit – Ireland
TV show from childhood – Scooby Doo (mystery, ghosts, humor, suspense – all of which I now write in my books!)
TV show from adulthood – LOST
Which do you prefer: Board games/card games or television? – TV. I enjoy reading but also enjoy binge watching on Netflix.

Thank you, Elaine I enjoyed getting to know you. We have some things in common. Dennis Lehane is one of my favorite authors. I LOVE his Patrick & Angie series. And Mystic River. I haven’t read the Inkheart series. I also try to make Pinterest boards for all my books, but I haven’t kept it caught up. I love doing it though.

Check out Elaine’s books, aren’t the covers fantastic? They both sound like great reads!

GIVEAWAY!!: READERS – Tell me your favorite ghost story or something that relates to a ghost story or ghost tour that you’ve taken for a chance to win the 2nd book in the Southern Ghosts Series, TICKET TO DIE.

Blurb –

Brianna fled to Savannah to escape the voices of the dead. Just when she thought she’d left all paranormal things behind, she discovers her house is haunted. Not just haunted, but haunted by Southern ghosts. These persistent beings not only hide her white shoes after Labor Day, but they leave grits-caked dishes in the sink, and swear to wreak havoc on her life – – unless she helps them.

Steven put Savannah in his rearview mirror years ago to follow his passion for music. When his band splits up and he can’t reach his little sister for weeks, he races home—only to learn his whole family died in a mysterious house fire. The house Brianna now lives in.

Together, Brianna and Steven must discover who murdered Steven’s family and become caught in a web of intrigue that will risk their careers, their homes–but especially their lives.
