Food Is My Love Language

The one comment I frequently get about my books, and that always makes me laugh, is, “Wow, you have a lot of food in your books.” I laugh because it’s true. My characters are always eating or cooking. Alright, maybe not always, but quite frequently.

There’s a reason for that. In my mind, food is about more than nutrition, it’s emotion, too. I don’t mean downing an entire gallon of ice cream after a bad breakup, although if it helps, you do you. Food is part of so many emotional rituals—milestone events like birthdays and anniversaries, weddings, funerals, reunions, and holidays. When I think about anything I’ve done with people I love, it always involves some sort of food.

When I cook for my family, I feel love and joy in being able to do something so basic yet necessary for them. Nothing makes me happier than cooking a favorite meal for one of my kids when they come home from school after being away for months. I enjoy preparing birthday treats probably more than my family does choosing them. And the surest way to know you’re a good friend is if I cook you dinner. Yes, even large holiday meals—time consuming and stressful—are ways that I show my feelings for my family and friends alike.

So, it makes perfect sense to me that my characters eat. Whether it’s going clamming on a first date and watching the sunset (A Heart Restrained), enjoying dessert at the best bakery in New York City (Five Minutes to Love) or enjoying a Fourth of July BBQ with good friends (In the Moment), my characters demonstrate their feelings with food.

As for me, if I have spare time, I cook or bake, much to the delight of my husband. My favorite things to bake are challah every Friday and chocolate chip cookies. I’m always looking for new recipes to try for meals, and I’ll eat almost anything once. I love trying to improve on things, whether it learning to bake a better bread or coming up with a new way to make chicken. In addition to feeding others and showing them how much I love them, it makes me feel good, too. And that’s the best part, isn’t it?

She refuses to sell him her company; will she give him her heart?

She paused and shifted so she faced him, one leg bent under her, the other dangling off the edge. “Absolutely not! Telenovelas are so much more emotional than American TV.”

“Why don’t you at least research online to find a plot summary?”

“I’m happy with the way things are,” she said. “I don’t need to hear the words to feel the story.”

“But…you’re crying.”

She smiled through her tears and wiped her cheeks. “I know.”

Staring at her, his heart rate increased, and he tamped the panic her tears caused. At first, he thought pain caused her tears, but her rapt attention to the screen made him realize otherwise.

Why would she want to do this to herself? And how could she enjoy a show she couldn’t understand?

He should leave, before she recognized his complete lack of comprehension. But her rapt attention to the screen fascinated him. She was smart—his business dealings with her had proven it. Yet she focused as if she understood her show.

She stared at the TV screen, but he couldn’t take his gaze off her. Her skin, despite its bruising, was luminous. Her lips were parted, and she gripped the edges of the sofa cushions until her knuckles turned white. This close to her, heat radiated from her body. He could hear a faint sigh.

If she were this passionate about a television show, how passionate would she be if he kissed her?

Kara O’Neal ~ The Princess’s Knight #AHAgrp

Please help me welcome my author friend, Kara O’Neal….

THE PRINCESS’S KNIGHT is book 17 in the TEXAS BRIDES OF PIKE’S RUN series. And it almost never existed.

I started writing the Texas Brides series in the year 2000 and had no plans to give a story to Madeline Talbut. Because…well…Madeline is the “mean girl”, and I had every intention of keeping her that way.

Except as I went through the series, little tidbits popped up about her, and she ends up with a backstory that is pretty heartbreaking. I felt for her. I thought, “Well, perhaps she does deserve redemption.”

But I hadn’t any idea who her hero ought to be.

Then I wrote book 8 – THE EDITOR’S KISSES – and Carl Dawson, a sixteen-year-old, know-it-all who preferred a wandering life to getting hitched declared that he’d never settle down, least of all with someone like Madeline.

And that was it. THE PRINCESS’S KNIGHT was born.

I enjoyed messing up Carl’s plans, and I really enjoyed watching Madeline redeem herself. That was something I didn’t know if I could tackle correctly. I feel as if Madeline’s arc is well-done, but readers will have to tell me the truth!

 To avoid jail, Carl Dawon must convince his childhood nemesis to go home where nothing but scandal and gossip await her.

Carl Dawson finds himself in a Georgia prison with only one way out – get Madeline Talbut, the viperous ice princess and his childhood nemesis, home to Pike’s Run, or lose a year of his life in jail. He takes the deal and finds her playing hostess on a magnificent showboat.

But, as she sails the mighty Mississippi, a newcomer infiltrates her space, shaking up her heart, awakening the desire she’d thought dormant and reminding her that the past must be dealt with.

Carl learns there is more to Madeline than he’d once thought, and she’s becoming more important to him than he wants. But he must hide his identity from her, or she might not return to Texas and all the pain it holds. And, even worse, if she discovers who Carl really is, he might lose her. Forever.

Excerpt:

“Miss Talbut has taken on all my duties aboard the Princess,” Mrs. Cole explained to Carl, “and I’m so grateful to her. And, as you can imagine, I can’t have anything happening to her.” She sniffed, then with care, she smoothed the hair at Madeline’s temple. “Tell me, Mr. Dawson, what do you do for a living?”

Not an odd question, but he felt it was going to lead somewhere. But what could he reveal without giving away who he was? He continued to sense it was better that Madeline not know his connection to her. At least, not yet. “I don’t have a profession. I travel, do odd jobs here and there.”

Mrs. Cole smiled at him. “And save damsels in distress everywhere you go, I bet.”

He’d aided ladies, yes, but not everywhere.

“I’m quite certain you’re nothing but a gentleman. A true knight,” Mrs. Cole remarked, while Madeline shifted uncomfortably.

“I try, ma’am,” Carl answered.

Mrs. Cole removed her hand from Madeline’s tightly linked fingers and leaned forward. “I have complete faith that you do, and I must ask for your assistance.” She gazed at him in earnest. “Would you watch over Miss Talbut for me? Be her protector while she carries out her duties?”

Well…damn it all. Relief poured through him. He glanced at Madeline again and saw her lips had pinched, and she looked ready to argue. But…she didn’t. Another revelation.

“I’ll pay you, of course, and it’s temporary. My husband will get better, and no one would dare harm Miss Talbut when he is present.” Mrs. Cole gave a sharp nod to emphasize her statement.

He studied Madeline for a brief second, realized she would abhor him guarding her. But did he have any other choice? “I’ll take the job.”

“Wonderful!” Mrs. Cole exclaimed, clapping her hands together.

Madeline looked ready to spit nails.

Well, he’d seen her tantrums. He could handle them.

Cat Dubie – The Queen of Paradise Valley ~ Author Interview and Giveaway

–Welcome, Cat. Please tell us a little about yourself, where are you from? Where do you live now?

I was born in a small town in Austria. When I was four, my family immigrated to Canada, to the lovely city of Edmonton, Alberta. Now my husband and I reside on the beautiful West Coast of British Columbia. Our three grown children and their families live nearby. And we inherited Roxy, a lovable Shih Tzu, who keeps us on our toes.

– Where did you get the idea for The Queen of Paradise Valley?

I got the idea for The Queen of Paradise Valley after watching reruns of the TV series The Big Valley, and playing the “what if” game. What if the sweet blonde daughter ran the big ranch? What if she’s the polar opposite of sweet? What will she do when she meets her match?

– What is the most difficult thing about writing a book? What was the most difficult thing about this one in particular?

The most difficult thing for me about writing is assembling required research. Luckily, I enjoy doing research. Sometimes too much – I tend to go off on tangents when something interests me. But nothing is wasted. I try to organize everything for the possibility I can use the information in the next book. For this book in particular, although I’ve done a lot of mountain wilderness camping and traveling through ranch country, I needed many specifics. I love the Internet!

– What book have you read that you wish you had written?

AWAY by Jane Urquhart, an engrossing, haunting novel filled with beautiful prose and amazing word images.

– What do you love that most people don’t like and wouldn’t understand why you do?

As it’s close to Christmas… I love holiday fruitcake. No one in my family or circle of friends eats fruitcake.

– What do you dislike that most people wouldn’t understand?

I dislike cinnamon anything and gingerbread anything.

– Do you collect anything?

I still have stamp and coin collections I started when I was twelve, though it’s been years since I looked at them. Lately, my family thinks I collect teddy bears and other stuffed animals, and I have shelves full of them. [Safe gifts when they don’t know what else to give!]

– What’s the main thing that you could get rid of in your life that would give you more writing time?

Having to do family accounting. And income tax. Eats up a lot of time.

– What’s your favorite book of all time and why? What’s your favorite childhood book?

Too many favorites to decide on one. I loved Heidi when I was a child, and anything horse related.

– What do you want readers to come away with after they read The Queen of Paradise Valley?

I’d like readers to think “wow – what a ride!” And to feel satisfied.

– Would you rather have a bad review or no review?

I would take a bad review over no review. I go by the saying, there’s no such thing as bad publicity. [This reasoning may change!]

– What is your favorite quote?

“You see things as they are and ask, ‘Why?’ I dream things as they never were and ask, ‘Why not?'” — George Bernard Shaw

– Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

Entirely from imagination. I don’t know any real people who look or act the way my characters do.

– How did your interest in writing originate? 

I started writing poetry at a young age. When still in elementary school, a friend and I collaborated on a story. I wrote and illustrated it. [My friend colored the pictures.] I wrote my first novel, a mystery, when I was eleven. I proudly showed it to my teacher and, despite its many flaws, she encouraged me to keep at it.

– Your favorite…

Movie – To Kill a Mockingbird [still resonates]

Music – I listen to all, from New Age to classical, alt rock to old country.

Place you’ve visited – San Francisco

Place you’d like to visit – Austria, Germany, and France – I have relatives there

Del raised himself on an elbow. “Alfredo.” He clutched at the servant’s sleeve. “Why–”

“We do not know why.” Alfredo’s voice fluttered with apprehension. “The sheriff asks many questions, but the Signora sits there as if she does not see him.”

“I’ll talk to the sheriff.”

“He will not leave the Signora’s side.”

“Then I’ll go down to him.” Del tried to swing his legs over the edge of the bed.

“Mr. Russell,” the doctor objected, “it must wait till we’re done.”

“Can’t wait. Help me, Doc, Alfredo.”

Author Interview with Lori Sizemore ~ New Release: Infamous

Please help me welcome Lori Sizemore with an interview and her new release…

Please tell us a little about yourself, where are you from? Where do you live now? Family? Pets?

I’m from a very small town in southern West Virginia and, after moving around the state some for college, that’s where I returned. I actually live in the home my husband helped his father build. We’ve raised our daughters here, more than anywhere else. I’ve been married for over twenty years and we have three daughters (22, 20, and 12) and one little tiny baby granddaughter. We also have two dogs (Paul and Izzy) and a cat (Farrah Pawcett).

Where did you get the idea for Infamous?

I got the idea a while back when it seemed everyone was coming out with a sex tape for the sole purpose of getting famous. I wondered what it would be like to have that happen to a person (through no consent or decision of their own) and how that person’s day-to-day life might look. For instance, it’s not as though a woman could hold down a job, say, in retail when the paparazzi are stalking her simply because her parents are famous and someone decided to cash in on that tangential fame. Justine, my heroine—who I like to consider pretty good at handling this difficult situation, grew from those questions.

Why did you choose this genre (is it something you’ve written before)?

I write contemporary romance because I think life today is just as fascinating, challenging, and funny as life in any time period, if not more so. We have the world at our fingertips, but we’re still all just trying to get by the best we can and find some joy in life.

What is the most difficult thing about writing a book?

When I do complain about the writing process, which I do occasionally (read, plenty of the time), the most difficult part is whatever part I’m in at that moment. Writing is the hardest if I’m doing a first draft. Revision is the hardest if I’m editing. Querying is always a nightmare (all that waiting) and then revisions and galleys once a book is contracted. Whatever phase I’m in makes all the others seem like they’re so much more fun.

How did you come up with the title?

I am awful at titles. I usually have to call in other writer friends to help me because I’m just trash at them. But Infamous just popped into my head one day, not long before I began the submission process, and I knew that was the perfect name. It describes the heroine and her life so far exactly.

Do you collect anything?

I collect coffee mugs. I have far too many. I’m blessed to have a fairly large kitchen and I have my most prized mugs hanging under the cabinets and even then, with about nine of those up, I’m struggling to find another way to display even more. It doesn’t hurt that I adore coffee. Actually, that’s probably the reason for my obsession.

What was your first job?

I was a typist and file clerk for a psychologist. It was fascinating work and being a small part of helping people was a big reward. It was no real surprise I found myself drawn to the field when I went to choose my major. I got my B.S. in Social and Behavioral Science and became a social worker.

What’s the main thing that you could get rid of in your life that would give you more writing time?

Real Housewives. I’m kind of a sucker for a few of those reality shows. Even though they’re “real,” they still follow a narrative that I find really interesting. And all that drama is fodder for writing. Everything can be turned into writing ideas, really.

What do you want readers to come away with after they read Infamous?

People are resilient and for those who are willing to work hard for it, happiness and love are out there for anyone. It’s just a matter of making our way through whatever life hands us.

Would you rather have a bad review or no review?

This is a really hard question! No one wants a bad review, but if that’s the honest opinion someone comes away from the book with then they should share that. So, I suppose I’d rather have a bad review than no review. At least from a bad review, especially if it’s constructive, I can grow as a writer.

What is your favorite quote?

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” It’s from Dr. Seuss and it has shaped my life the last fifteen years and I think my writing as well. I believe that when someone loves us, they help us become a better us, not change who we are.

Have you written any other books that are not published?

I just got a contract for a matchmaking novella called Exactly Like You to be published by After Glows Publishing in their Kismet line. I’ve also written a series of three novellas set in 1958 Las Vegas about a sister and her two brothers. I’m hoping to find a home for those next year. Finally, I have completed the next Infamous novel titled Illegitimate. It’s in revision right now and I hope to have it off to my editor this month.

What do your friends and family think of your writing?

They have been incredibly supportive. My mom thinks my writing is a little risqué and advised my dad that he would probably do better to not read Infamous. When I told them both I wasn’t embarrassed by anything I’d written, my father shared this with me. “You write from your heart. I’m proud of you for writing what’s in your heart.”

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Family are the people who love you and family is everything.

I’m going to ask the dreaded question of book-lovers everywhere—what’s your favorite book?

“I’ve never hugged anyone I wasn’t going to have sex with.”

“We’re not having sex.” She squeezed him tighter and rested her head on his shoulder. “Hug me back.”

Sawyer lifted his arms and wrapped them around her, his hands cupping her shoulders, pulling her closer. He dropped his head to rest on hers, and parts of him, so deep he couldn’t name them, pulled free and demanded his attention. Her hair smelled like fruit, the kind kids eat in the summer, juice dripping down their chins. “I’m fine with the hugging, but, just saying, I’m not responsible for any physical reaction hugging may induce.”

“Okay.” The word drifted out of her on a sigh.

He wasn’t equipped for this. There hadn’t been a lot of touching growing up, at least not the kind that didn’t end in a busted lip or a cracked rib. As an adult, there’d been lots of touching. But, not like this. The tighter he held her, the closer he wanted to be.

She also lives with two dogs, a cat, and five hermit crabs. Yes, five of them. This menagerie and her family keep her busy.

She worked in mental health as a social worker for ten years before making the choice to write full-time.
