Meet the authors of the Tropical Tryst Boxed Set:

CJ Matthew, author of A Major Affair, The Colonel’s Daughters novella 1.5

What inspired you to choose your setting? The garden isle of Kauai, in Hawaii, was chosen for Ed and DeAnna’s tropical tryst in A Major Affair because the breathtakingly beautiful island offers such a wide variety of natural landmarks. I’ve vacationed in Hawaii several times and Kauai is by far my favorite locale.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? The perfect tropical getaway is an island, or feels like one, with amazing natural sights. The lone hotel or resort offers luxurious accommodations, hedonistic-level pampering, a wide variety of sports and entertainment, and discrete privacy.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Stranded on an island…if I ever, much later, wanted to be rescued, I’d choose to be castaway with Harrison Ford. The man is sexy, romantic, and has a terrific sense of humor. Those Indiana Jones skills would pay off when we eventually decided to move our torrid love affair off the island and to a more populated venue.

Blurb for A Major Affair:

Quinn’s dream mission: spend a week of leave snooping around a luxury Kauai resort, enjoying the amenities, then report back to a skeptical investor. DeAnna’s nightmare mission: spend a week snooping around a luxury Kauai resort, enjoying the amenities, then report back to her employer. Two people on different sides who never expected to fall in love.

About the Author:

CJ Matthew grew up in an Air Force family living all over the US and around the world, which provided terrific ideas for future books, and the chance to meet real-life heroes/heroines in uniforms and flight-suits. When she isn’t writing, or reading romances, CJ enjoys spending time with her two grown children, their spouses, her brilliant grandson, and her feisty cat, Max. Schedule permitting, she loves to travel, but Max flatly refuses to leave home.

Caitlyn Lynch, author of Finding Cory

What inspired you to choose your setting? A family holiday to Airlie Beach, a town known as the Gateway to the Reef, two years ago. While there we took a boat trip that took in Hamilton Island, Daydream Island and Whitehaven Beach. I fell in love with the islands and knew I had to write a story about them… in fact Finding Cory is planned to be the first of a series set on Sunfish Island Resort, which is based very heavily on Daydream Island.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? Anywhere with palm trees, hammocks and strawberry daiquiris! I’m lucky enough to live in the sub-tropics near Brisbane in sunny Queensland, Australia, so sunshine and the beach are probably things I take for granted.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Jeremy Renner. Not only is he nice to look at, but he’s a builder/renovator in his spare time so he could build us a fabulous house to live in!

Blurb

Olivia Stratton had it all; a high-powered job in New York, a perfect boyfriend, a perfect life… until it all came crashing down her ears. Being offered the opportunity to live on a beautiful tropical island resort for a year as their marketing manager is her chance to start afresh, where nobody knows about her past. Romantic entanglements are definitely something she plans to avoid, but when she meets Cory, the resort’s too-handsome-to-be-real entertainment coordinator, sparks fly and Olivia finds herself swept right out of her Jimmy Choos and into Cory’s arms.

Bio

Caitlyn Lynch is an Australian mother of two who has always enjoyed reading and writing romantic fiction. Happily married to her very own tall, dark and handsome for 14 years and counting, she draws on a rich imagination to create new scenarios for her steamy contemporary romances.
She has twice been selected as a finalist for Romance Writers Australia short story anthologies in 2017.

Karen M. Bryson, author of Brooklyn Winters

What inspired you to choose your setting? Growing up, my family took yearly vacations to Sanibel Island, and it’s always held a place in my heart. It’s one of my favorite places in the world.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? A white sand beach, a lounge chair, a cocktail in one hand and a great novel in the other.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Do I have to pick a celebrity? I’d most want to be stranded with my husband.

Blurb
A college student convinces her overprotective father, who is a personal security specialist, to allow her to go on Spring Break, only to have her roommate go missing on the first day of their tropical island vacation.

Stacy-Deanne, author of Murder with a Kiss

What inspired you to choose your setting? I wanted a setting that was not only tropical but also mysterious. Jamaica has many hidden elements, and I was interested in learning more about it. I enjoy writing about unfamiliar places because it makes the story more exciting for me if I’m learning as I go along. Since Jamaica has this thrilling aura about it, I knew it would be a great setting for a steamy romantic suspense.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? Jamaica. LOL! No surprise, huh? It’s funny because I have always wanted to go to England so never really envisioned a tropical vacation. Even though I’m not a beach person or swimmer, Jamaica definitely fascinates me. Activities are endless so you’d never be bored and there is something in Jamaica for everyone including the wonderful sights, annual festivals and food.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? I’d say Jonathan Rhys Meyers. I’ve always liked him but since The Tudors, I’ve really been hooked!

Blurb

When her twin brother Kirby is murdered, Kayla heads to Kingston, Jamaica to find out who would want her brother dead. Kayla teams up with Kirby’s best friend, Tate, who seems just as anxious for answers as she does.  Kayla struggles with an attraction to the sexy tour guide, but loses the battle while Tate introduces her to the sensuous allure of Jamaica.
Bio

Holly Cortelyou, author of Two Reckless Hearts (A Barrett Ridge Novella)

What inspired you to choose your setting? I’ve always daydreamed of the Caribbean’s silky, warm waters and the magical steel drums dancing in the balmy night air. So it was fun to whip up a make-believe tropical island off the coast of St. Lucia for the luxurious resort in Two Reckless Hearts.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? Beyond the “Must-Have’s” of my hunky partner, pink sand beaches, and an endless pina colada, I’d love to parasail, frolic with the dolphins, and zipline through the tropical forest with birds and monkeys screeching from the bamboo and mango trees…as long as those monkeys are far enough away they can’t jump me as I whiz by!

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? George Clooney, Chris Hemsworth and Jason Momoa would have to have a…shirtless battle to win my hand. Ah, but then Dwayne Johnson’s raunchy sense of humor might win the day. Come to think of it, making me choose is just down right mean!

Blurb:

Five sultry nights. Two reckless hearts. One family wedding. What could go wrong? Jami Barrett’s been jilted by her fiancé, and she must endure her sister’s crazy Caribbean wedding. Now, her arch rival, Beck Kavanagh, has crashed the party! With a make-or-break deal and her loyalty in the balance, Jami’s feeling the pressure…and the heat of her hidden desire. Will steamy island nights tempt enemies to become lovers?

Bio:

Holly Cortelyou is a romance author who pens sweet and spicy small town, contemporary romances as well as supernatural and paranormal romances. On any given day Holly Cortelyou can be found sipping coffee, perusing Facebook and surfing for gossip on royals, college football (Go Ducks!), knitting, and ghosts! Holly’s living her own Happily Ever After with an uber-handy, broad-shouldered and delicious husband, a sweet silver lab and a fluffball kitty in sun-kissed Southern Oregon. She has hazel eyes, a goofy sense of humor and all the rest is subject to change without notice.

Meet the authors of the Tropical Tryst Boxed Set:

Nicole Morgan, author of Swept Away

What inspired you to choose your setting? Dreams of someday getting to visit there. 🙂

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? A place that has no wifi, where you are forced to enjoy your surroundings and work is not an option.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Hmm… now that is one tough question. There are so many dashing and devastatingly handsome men that I wouldn’t mind being stranded with, but out of all of them I’d probably have to say Shemar Moore of Criminal Minds fame.

Blurb for Swept Away

When Felicia and Trevor Jenning’s hope for the future are shattered by cruel fate, the two soul mates find their love is put to the ultimate test. With each passing day, resentment builds and the two grow further apart until they eventually drift into different worlds that don’t include one another. Will they be lost from one another forever? Or will circumstances intervene and bring them back together once again?

Bio

Nicole Morgan is a USA Today and International best-selling author who has written romance in various genres of romance. Many of her novels are erotic romance, which more often than not has a suspenseful back story. Basically erotic romance mixed with your good old-fashioned whodunits. While she’s written everything from contemporary to paranormal her leading men will more than likely be wearing a uniform of some kind. From military to police officers, she has a love for writing about those who protect and serve. It all began with her very first novel about Navy SEALs – which turned into a fan favorite series – and continues with her more recent releases. When you’re reading a book by Ms. Morgan you’ll be sure to find a few twists and turns you were not expecting.

She is a proud member of Writerspace, a Romance Books ‘4’ Us Gold Author, as well as being a Sweet and Sexy Diva. Additionally, you will find Nicole writing under the names of Taylor Brooks and Nicki Day. Nicole also mentors authors, offers administrative services and is the founder of Romance Collections. Find out more about Nicole and her books by visiting her website, or any of her social networks.

Linda O’Connor, author of Perfectly Skeptical (Perfectly Series Novella)

What inspired you to choose your setting? My novella, Perfectly Skeptical, is set in Little Cayman Island. I’ve been to Grand Cayman Island twice, and have had wonderfully relaxing vacations. For this story, I used a lot of what I experienced on Grand Cayman – the snorkeling, the flowers, the trees, the people, and the gorgeous beaches – but I wanted a small town vibe so I thought the smaller Little Cayman Island would be perfect.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? My perfect getaway includes sitting on a sandy beach, doing nothing except watching waves roll onto the shore (under an umbrella, and wearing a wide-brimmed hat and SPF-50). 😀

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? I’d like to be stranded with James Corden. He’s so funny and an amazing singer – I’d be able to laugh and have music!

Blurb for Perfectly Skeptical

Dr. Brianna Scott looked forward to sleeping away her staycation, until a lucky windfall meant an upgrade to palm trees, an ocean view . . . and the sexy Dr. Matt Gaelen. She’ll have fun, but can a holiday fling really turn into a soul mate for life? Doubtful.

Matt has no radar for sniffing out gold-diggers and protecting his heart. Until now. Brianna is more turned off than turned on by his wealth. What are his chances of getting her to overlook it? Dubious at best. Improbable and iffy – the typical path to love.

Bio

Linda O’Connor started writing a few years ago when she needed a creative outlet other than subtly rearranging the displays at the local home décor store. It turns out she loves writing romantic comedies and has a few more stories to tell. When not writing, she’s a physician at an Urgent Care Clinic (well, even when she is writing she’s a physician, and it shows up in her stories 😀 ). She hangs out at www.lindaoconnor.net.

Courtney Hunt, author of Desire a Bridesmaid, 4th in the Always a Bridesmaid series

What inspired you to choose your setting? My honeymoon. We cruised to St. Martin, St. Croix, and St. Thomas. I wanted elements of all three islands so I created Eden Ilse, the setting for Desire a Bridesmaid.

What is your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? A beach chair, an umbrella, and a stack of romance novels. As a mom of a very active third grader, I rarely get to read in my beach chair anymore.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Oh, it’s tough to pick just one of my crushes. But, I think I’ll Dan Stevens. I’ve had a crush on him since Downton Abbey and saw Beauty and the Beast four times in the theatre.

Blurb:

Five years ago, aimless drifter Carter Prescott and recent divorcee Anna Westbrook shared one wild, wicked night on Eden Isle. Now, after a hurricane flattened the island, Carter transformed his ruined resort into the most beautiful in the Caribbean.  When professional bridesmaid Anna arrives in Eden Isle, Carter needs her help to publicize his new destination wedding package. Will Anna and Carter discover that one perfect night in paradise will never be enough?

Desire a Bridesmaid is a standalone novella in the Always a Bridesmaid contemporary romance series about professional bridesmaids finding their own happily ever afters. If you enjoy witty dialogue, unforgettable characters, and steamy love scenes, you’ll love Courtney Hunt’s light-hearted Always a Bridesmaid series.

Liz Gavin, author of Tristan

What inspired you to choose your setting? I grew up in Brazil and every chance I had I’d spend time in the coast of Santa Catarina State because it’s simply gorgeous. When I decided to write this summer novella, setting it there was a no-brainer.
What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? An enclosed little white-sand beach framing a calm turquoise sea.
What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Only one? Lol Oh, well, if I must… Seriously, it’d Bono, U2’s singer. I’m a huge fan of his music and humanitarian work, so I’d have tons to talk about with him, if we were stranded on an island.

Blurb

Fifteen years ago, Izzie Anderson betrayed Tristan Knight and ripped out his heart. Yet she lied to protect him. Now she needs Tristan to save her son.

Tristan Knight mended his tattered heart in a secluded beach in the Southern coast of Brazil. When Izzie walks into Chez Nous Bistro one evening, he realizes her betrayal left him heartless. Can two damaged souls heal each other? Or are there wrongs that can never be righted?
Bio

International best-selling author Liz Gavin, has accomplished much in her short career. Her books have made to #1 and Top Five best-selling ranks in her home country Brazil and others as diverse as Japan, the UK and the US; both in English and Portuguese, collecting 5 and 4-star reviews. Nominated for a Summer Indie Book Award in 2016, and again in 2017, this RWA member constantly seeks new opportunities to improve her craft. This thirst for knowledge propelled Liz to leave the comforts of family and friends in Brazil and move to California to pursue a Master’s degree in late 2015. She lives in sunny SoCal, where she’s researching the writing process, for her thesis, in hopes to figure out why she creates in English instead of her native Portuguese.
Liz Gavin writes in contemporary, paranormal, and historical genres. In her sexy stories, one finds smart, independent women, who don’t need rescuing by knights in shining armor, but indulge in steamy action with swoony Alpha males with big hearts. She also writes about women discovering their sexuality and finding happiness in unconventional setups.

Victoria Pinder, author of Tempting James

What inspired you to choose your setting? I made up an island called Grand Bohemia because I wanted to have a specific type of hotel with conference capabilities, set on a beach and the setup wasn’t exactly to life. So rather than day trip from Miami to the Bahamas which might be fun to do, I just fictionalized it. (I live in Miami so there is the $49 boat I could take.) Now the beginning parts where they are in Miami, those are all real settings as I can drive and notice things.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? I already live on a beach in Miami. It’s pretty nice but I never really go out and enjoy a beach. If I’m stressed though, it’s nice that it’s there to look at. So the word that catches my eye in the question is ‘getaway.’ This means I don’t have to do anything but put my feet up, read, and have no responsibilities that will need my full attention. So if I’m in a hotel where someone is bringing my food, cleaning up after I eat, making my bed… this sounds like paradise right now.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? Steve Amell. I’m just catching up on the Arrow as I skipped it for a few years. Now that I’m #TeamArrow, his character spent a lot of time on an island. He had to have picked up a few things on what we’re to do.

Blurb for Tempting James:

She’s on the run. He’s a distraction. They’re begging for trouble. James Clancy made a promise, and he intends to keep it. But protecting his former Marine buddy’s sister proves to be more than he bargained for. He’s already been burned once. He’s not about to let that happen again. The last thing Scarlett Hawke needs is a babysitter. What she needs is a husband, and a way out. When she meets James, she knows he oh-so-wrong for her, but resisting him might be the hardest thing she’s ever had to do… until she discovers who he really is and just how dangerous that can be. Will Scarlett let love happen or will it only make her complicated life worse?

Lena Bourne, author of Rider’s Fall (A Viper’s Bite MC Novella)

What inspired you to choose your setting? My story is set on the tropical beaches of Brazil, and I chose this setting because I really want to visit Brazil one day. This way I get to imagine the setting without actually having to go.

What’s your idea of the perfect tropical getaway? I would love to stay in one of those bungalows over the water, reading and spending some well-deserved alone time with my significant other.

What celebrity would you most like to be stranded on an island with? That’s a tough one! I’m going to choose Tom Hardy, since I’m a huge fan right now. But there’s a line of others on the waiting list.

Blurb for Rider’s Fall (A Viper’s Bite MC Novella)

Chloe swore off men forever when she escaped to Brazil to start a new life, because her old one was destroyed by an ex. But when the orphanage she volunteers at is threatened, she’s forced to accept the help of a hot as sin biker. But Rider is a man with no home and no wish to have one. Will the love they find in each other be strong enough to change any of that?

Bio

Lena Bourne writes steamy, suspenseful romantic stories, which include MC romances, dark romances, military romances, and everything in between. Hot bedroom scenes and fast-paced, action packed plots are Lena’s specialty. Her heroines are strong, sassy and independent, and her heroes are usually rough-around-the-edges alpha bad boys whose heart is in the right place.

What happens at La Bonne Chance, doesn’t always stay at La Bonne Chance. Are you ready to roll the dice?

Raising Kane by Kat Henry Doran

She’s Mallory Kane, committed to reporting the truth. He’s Kieran Pollack, slick media spin artist, protecting criminal justice system and those who serve it. Truth or fiction, either could bring them both down.

A few favorite lines:

“If you’d give me a few minutes of your time, I promise to make this all go away. C’mon, whaddya say?”

“I’d sooner walk through a nest of pit vipers than talk to any member of the Victory Police Department.”

A fun fact:

The hero’s mother, a veteran ED nurse, spends her weekly girls’ night out at La Bonne Chance Casino watching the Chippendale Dancers strut their stuff.

What was the most difficult thing about writing in conjunction with the other authors?

Nothing. I’ve done similar projects before both as an author and an editor. This was no different.

What was the best thing about writing in conjunction with other authors?

Learning where their minds go in terms of creating plot lines and the characters to go with them. That was lots of fun.

An Inn Decent Proposal by Sharon Buchbinder

Jim Rawlings takes the biggest chance of his life—bidding at auction for a once-grand inn. Genie King attends the hotel auction, never expecting another LBC employee to bid at the sale—much less the guy she had a major crush on in high school. Working together means Jim must share long-hidden secrets. Will Genie reject the man with a past? Or will she love the man he’s become?

A few favorite lines:

Just as she opened her mouth to respond, pitiful caterwauls pierced the cold air.

“That wasn’t me,” Jim said. “Was it you?”

She walked to the kitchen door and opened it. A rail thin black cat strolled in, sat in front of her and howled. Genie contemplated the noisy feline. “You chose poorly.”

A fun fact:

I based the chef’s character on two real life Culinary Institute of America and James Beard Award winning executive chefs. As a foodie and huge fan of their work, it was great fun to incorporate signature dishes from both of their menus in the seduction scene.

What was the most difficult thing about writing in conjunction with the other authors?

Email communication is a challenge for any project. While using emoticons is helpful, there is still room for error and miscommunication. If I were to do this again, I would want to have a conference call/SKYPE session where all the authors got on the same page, literally.  This is what my co-editor and I do with my best selling textbook in health care management. Any confusion or concerns are addressed in weekly meetings as the project rolls along. It also helps to keep both of us motivated and upbeat.

What was the best thing about writing in conjunction with other authors?

Having written several textbooks with over 40 contributing authors, I was comfortable with the process of sharing my work and getting feedback. Since I’d never done a fiction anthology with other authors, this was a great learning experience for my romance writing world.

Perfect Odds by Lashanta Charles

Callista Brenner is determined to get her engagement back on track, even if the future groom isn’t as interested. Jayce Gilmore is determined to show her that she is worth so much more than a man who ignores her every move. Too bad she may not live to see it.

A few favorite lines:

“That’s adorable, little dove.

“What’s adorable?” I ask.

“That you think I’d be concerned about anything, especially another man, drawing you away from me,” he says.

Fun Fact:

I’m pretty sure I could be clinically diagnosed with having arachnophobia, but I can’t Google it to find out how true it is because Google will show pictures of spiders and I’m too scared of them to risk seeing them.

What was the most difficult/best thing about writing in conjunction with the other authors?

I combined these two questions because the answer is one in the same. The best and most difficult thing about working with the other authors is the different levels of creativity involved. We all have our opinions on how things should be and while that made for a great source of entertainment for readers, but it made it just as hard to work with each other.

A Ghost To Die For – Keta Diablo

Rooney Fontaine must convince the brother of a ghost that his life is in danger. Now she’s running from hired assassins with a gorgeous man who makes her bones melt. Who knew danger could be so sexy?

A ghost, a quasi-medium and an alpha hero join forces to solve a murder. But someone wants to silence them forever.

A few favorite lines:

“What are you, some kind of weirdo with inhuman defenses?”

A ghost.

“What!”

You asked me what I am and I’m telling you. I’m a ghost.

Eyes wide, voice in  shriek mode, she fell onto the edge of the bed and glared at him. “You can’t be a ghost. I don’t believe in ghosts!”

Understandable. Neither did I until I became one.

* * *

“I know this is going to sound crazy to you, as it did to me at first.” God, this is much harder than I thought. “See, the thing is, your brother didn’t commit suicide. Two men tossed him off the balcony at the La Bonne Chance Casino.”

The Adonis look-alike rolled his eyes.

“He’s been wandering around the hotel for two months until-well, until he showed up in my room last night.”

“Thanks for dropping by Rooney Fontaine but I’ll thank you to haul your sweet little ass back into that car and get the hell off my land.”

He thinks my ass is sweet?

A fun fact:

I’ve always been fascinated by spirits (ghosts) so naturally, I think it’s fun to write about them. The ghost in this story, Stuart, had quite a sense of humor, despite being stuck in limbo–between heaven and Hell. He was desperate to solve his murder and finally found someone to help him. Rooney Fontaine didn’t believe in ghosts…until Stuart showed up in her hotel room begging for help. Hope you enjoy the adventure!

What was the most difficult thing about writing in conjunction with the other authors?

Getting everyone on the same page when it came to the long-term direction of the boxed set. But…these authors are great and were fun to work with. I think they’re all very talented writers too. Don’t forget to download ALL IN FOR LOVE to find out for yourself. Happy reading!

What was the best thing about writing in conjunction with other authors?

It’s always fun to choose a common theme and see what stories come out of it. Some will venture toward humor, some toward suspense and others murder and mayhem. But they all have one thing in common…events or happenings at a large casino. The other nice thing about writing as a group is help with promotion. As every author knows, marketing and promotion takes a toll on us. Some of that is relieved when you have others to help you. Go Team!

For Money Or Love by Margo Hoornstra

She’s the one woman he can’t afford to lose.

Mega-millionaire Daniel Winston Montgomery will do whatever it takes to preserve his wealth, knowing his brilliant top assistant, Lindsey Carr, is essential to his firm’s continued success. Though, truth be told, he needs Lindsey far more than she needs him…

Computer brainiac Lindsey Carr wants more out of life than being no more than boring tech support and is convinced Dan and his company will survive just fine without her since he’s never required more from her than her superior analytical skills, except for that one time she won’t let herself think about…

Unwilling to let Lindsey go, Dan must fight to keep her in his life but, in a clash of priorities, will he choose money…or love?

A few favorite lines:

“You and this marvelous specimen.” Rita waited until Lindsey glanced up then met her eye to eye. “As a couple, are old news, right? That’s what you’ve said.”

“Absolutely.” Purposely lowering her voice, she mentally counted to five before she spoke again. “We did the dating thing for a while.” She shrugged one shoulder for effect. “It didn’t work for us.”

Lindsey took a small gulp of wine to avoid having to share more, and was relieved when Rita and Anne went back to hunk browsing. Trying her best to ignore the fact it was Daniel’s hunk they browsed, she gave up to give into her own thoughts about the man.  Bowing to a mutual attraction that became evident soon after they met, Lindsey and Daniel dated for a time. A very short time, consisting of a few casual dinners, a couple of movies.  That one night in….

A fun fact:

Through no fault of my own, I was once asked to get off the merry go round at a popular amusement park before the ride even started. I hope to use that life incident in a story someday.

What was the most difficult thing about writing in conjunction with the other authors?

The most difficult thing was to stay true to some of the details that would appear in all of the stories such as the color scheme of the interior of the casino, what the attendants’ uniforms looked like, and what named characters held what positions at the La Bonne Chance Resort and Casino.

What was the best thing about writing in conjunction with other authors?

The best thing for me was a pivotal plot point idea I got when one of the other authors had a murder in their story. I fed off that incident to ramp up the conflict between Dan and Lindsey, the hero and heroine in my book, and to bring Dan to his come to realize moment.

Take a Chance on Me by M.J. Schiller

She’s a dealer on a losing streak with love.

He’s a cop who will go all in to save her from the mob.

Can she take a chance on him when this could be her final wager?

A few favorite lines:

Five-Foot-Two-Eyes-Of-Blue. That’s what he’d been calling her for weeks.

How come you get to kiss the handcuffed girl?

A fun fact:

I had to run my gambling scenarios past four of my husband’s friends to make sure I had things straight.

What was the most difficult thing about writing in conjunction with the other authors?

Deciding anything and miscommunication.

What was the best thing about writing in conjunction with other authors?

It was fun to tie our stories together!

Ramblings of a Lifelong Elvis Fan – Part 86 – The Guest House at Graceland

[INTRO: I am a die hard, card carrying Elvis fan and have been for as long as I can remember. There is so much about Elvis to love; his incredible singing voice, his generous spirit, his looks (the most gorgeous man ever), his movies (yes, his movies. They make me happy, so critics can just shush), his service in the army, his magical presence on stage, his transcendent charisma, and…I could go on and on. As a matter of fact, on my 50th post, I believe it was, I DID go on and on. I listed 50 things I love about Elvis. It wasn’t difficult. I am an author and I mention Elvis in almost every story I write. I named my son Presley. I was fortunate to see Elvis in concert three times. I have been to Graceland five times… See? I love Elvis. I have been blogging weekly for more than a year, but going forward, I will blog every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month. My life is insanely busy and I found myself missing weeks from time to time. This way, I’m more likely to be consistent. Hopefully, even if you are not an Elvis fan, you appreciate something about him and will find my posts interesting. Feel free to comment. Oh my gosh, have you SEEN this? On October 27, 2016, the brand new hotel, The Guest House at Graceland, will open. It looks magnificent!!! I must stay there before I die. The rooms are a little pricey, but totally worth it. Look at this gorgeous lobby:

guesthouselobby

The hotel has 450 guest rooms, some of them with really cool themes.

Such as…

The King’s Suites, one of which is inspired by Elvis’ bedroom at Graceland, the other by Las Vegas decor with both vintage and contemporary accouterments.

king-suitehouse-at-graceland-sm-bay-final-4

Vernon & Gladys Suites – Decorate with mid-century flair and inspired by Elvis’ Palm Springs home.

gladys-graceland-sm-bay-final-2

There are also the TCB & Living Room Suites. Is anyone else surprised there is no Jungle Room suite? I would imagine that even the ‘regular’ rooms are fabulous. I would love to stay in a special-theme room, but I’d be content with the least expensive one.

I am utterly in awe and would LOVE to visit there some day. Not only is it spectacular, but just being at Graceland is a feeling that is indescribable. It’s somehow both thrilling and heart wrenching, and as I’ve mentioned before, there is an almost tangible presence there. As if Elvis’ essence was so strong, it remains. I can imagine how much more amazing the entire experience would be if I stayed at this new hotel. Surrounded by so many Elvis related items and people would be heavenly.

Here is a pic of me with my three kids and my niece when we visited Graceland a few years back. We stayed at The Heartbreak Hotel, and I’m so glad we did since it has now been torn down.

Maybe I’ll make it to The Guest House at Graceland some day… When I DO go, believe me, I’ll be sharing all about my experience right here. 🙂

EOLS Charity

Elvis was known for his giving heart and charitable work during his lifetime. Lisa Marie and Elvis Presley Enterprises have continued that tradition with their involvement in various charities. In 1984, The Elvis Charitable Foundation was formed. The EPCF created a scholarship fund for students majoring in the arts. The charity also contributes to one of Elvis’ favorite charities, Goodwill Homes, a Memphis facility that provides counseling and services for abused children and their families. The EPCF also assists numerous other charities, especially focusing on arts, education and children’s programs.

1956-september-9-ed-sullivan-show

September 9, 1956 – Elvis performed “Love Me Tender” for his first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show “Toast of the Town.” He was shot from just the waist up during the performance. Elvis would make a total of three appearances on the show.  Record stores were swamped with requests for the record, which had not been released yet.

Songwriter Ben Weisman has the honorable distinction of having written more songs for Elvis than any other songwriter. Guess how many? That’s right…57!! (See how much faith I have in you?) Elvis called him The “Mad Professor.”

s-l300

On Elvis’ right, Sid Wayne, on his left, Ben Weisman

Some of my favorites he’s written are: “Slowly but Surely” – “As Long as I Have You” – “Fame and Fortune”

Here is As Long as I have You from King Creole. Very sad moment 😦

Quote from Ben:

“I approached writing for Elvis differently than I did for any other artist. The songs had to have a combination of blues, country, rock and pop [what came to becalled ‘rockabilly’]. It was like walking in his musical shoes. With each new Elvis movie, more of my songs were being recorded. It became more and more exciting, for I was becoming the only songwriter to have so many songs recorded by him.”

And, finally, just a random quote I love:

Elvis was the only man from Northeast Mississippi who could shake his hips and still be loved by rednecks, cops, and hippies.
– Jimmy Buffett

Elvis at Graceland v0uzrjoznppfcs

Bremer Trust, the same company that manages Graceland tours, has made a deal to oversee tours of Paisley Park, Prince’s mansion/studio/concert hall outside of Minneapolis. Not to disparage Prince, I know he was a huge talent, and I have a lot of respect for him as an artist. However, I cannot imagine that the tours of his estates will be as successful as those of Graceland. I am certain the tours will be quite prosperous for the first few years, but I can’t see them having the longevity of the Graceland tours. Prince has a ton of fans, but I don’t believe they span generations the way Elvis fans do. Elvis fans of all ages travel from across the world to see his home, still, nearly forty years after his death.

Graceland was opened to the public in 1982, five years after Elvis passed away. It draws more than 500,000 visitors annually. And has for nearly thirty-five years. I doubt people will flock to Paisley Park every year for decades, but maybe I’m wrong. While I’m sure the company who handles the tours is doing a great job, I don’t believe their business acumen is the reason for the huge turnout of visitors to Graceland. As in life, Elvis in death still has a magnetism that draws people to him in droves.

Of course, it’s not a competition. I hope the venture is successful. I’m sure it will be great for the economy. Visitors to Elvis’ home bring in around 150 million dollars per year to Memphis. Not a bad chunk of change.

From an article on the venture: Paisley Park tours will include Prince’s video editing suites, rehearsal rooms, private NPG Music Club, and a massive soundstage and concert hall where he rehearsed for tours and held private events and concerts. Visitors also will see thousands of artifacts from Prince’s personal archives, including his concert wardrobe, awards, musical instruments, artwork, rare music and video recordings, concert memorabilia, automobiles and motorcycles.

Here is a photo of Paisley Park:

download

It looks more like an office complex than a home, doesn’t it? From what I understand, inside the home is much more appealing.

What do you think? Would you travel to Minneapolis to see Prince’s estates? If so, more than once?

I’ve been to Graceland five times, and I will go as many more times as I can. Most fans who visit have visited several times. There’s just something about Elvis that keeps people coming back. We’ll see if Prince has that same kind of draw.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Interview with Author Elizabeth Rose ~ New Release: Touch of Gold

Please help me welcome today’s guest, Elizabeth Rose with an interview and her new release, Touch of Gold.

First off, I’d like to thank Alicia for inviting me to be her guest today. My name is Elizabeth Rose, and I have been married to the same wonderful man for the last thirty years, and have two grown sons who are just as wonderful. I grew up and still live in the suburbs of Chicago, although I am more of a country girl at heart. I’ve spent a good part of my younger years visiting my grandparents on a lake in Michigan, and have used instances from my own life as inspiration to write my 12 book Tarnished Saints Series.

saintadwithborder500

My Tarnished Saints Series is about 12 brothers who are sons of a preacher but far from saints. Matter of fact, they are nothing but trouble. It takes place in a small town and on a lake in Michigan. I invite readers to start reading this series, and right now if you sign up for my mailing list, you can get the Tarnished Saints Christmas Prequel free. Just use this link: http://bit.ly/freetarnishedsaints . While this is a contemporary series, I also write medieval, western, and paranormal, which brings me to my new release, Touch of Gold. This is book 4 in my Tangled Tales Series and also the twisted, tangled, romantic retelling of the fairy tale, Rumpelstiltskin.

My hero, Kin de Bar (Rumpelstiltskin) is one of the cursed de Bar siblings and everything he touches turns to gold. This happens to come in handy since he is escorting Olivia de Mil to the baron’s castle and because of the girl’s father’s boastful lies, he thinks she can spin wool into gold. Other books in this series so far are: Lady and the Wolf (Red Riding Hood), Just a Kiss (Frog Prince) and Beast Lord (Beauty and the Beast.) Touch of Gold will be followed by the rest of the siblings’ stories which include; Rapunzel, Cinderella and the Snow Queen.

I grew up loving fairy tales, and I’m from the days when Rocky and Bullwinkle had their Fractured Fairy Tales, if any of you are old enough to remember that. I also love watching the TV series, Once Upon a Time. I also love anything paranormal, so rewriting the fairy tales which often had horrific endings, and making them happily ever after as well as romantic was a fun challenge.

rumpel500

  • Are there any tricks/habits you have when creating a story?

Yes! Since I also have a degree in art, I love making my own covers. I create the cover of the book before I write it, and include things in the cover in the story as well. For example, in my medieval book, Lady of the Mist from my Legacy of the Blade Series, my heroine is a pirate. On the cover you’ll see a woman with a sword wearing an ornate necklace. She’s also in front of a ship and there is a sea hawk in the air. In the story, that is her ship and hawk, and the necklace she is wearing is a big part of the plot. As long as I’m creating my own covers, you’ll always know exactly what the hero and heroine look like.

  • What’s your favorite childhood book?

It was a book called The Wednesday Witch. It had a witch that rode a vacuum cleaner. This sparked my interest of paranormal things and characters.

  • What do you want readers to come away with when they read your book?

If it is a medieval, I like them to feel they are learning something about history that they didn’t know before. For example, my Barons of the Cinque Ports Series tells about a part of history that no one seems to know about. There truly were barons of the Cinque Ports – the five major trade ports of England. If it’s one of my contemporary books – I want my readers to fall in love with the heroes and get involved in their lives. And if it’s a paranormal book, I hope my readers can open their minds and delve into the world of supernatural events. A lot of my books also have underlying morals weaved into them.

  • If you could be a character in any of your books, who would you be?

I couldn’t be just one character. It’s too hard to choose. If I were in one of my Greek Myth Series, I could be a goddess. Or if I were in one of my Elemental Series, I could wield the power of controlling fire, water, air and earth, like my heroines do. Of course, I’ve always wanted to be able to ride a horse and wield a sword and live in a castle, so any of my medieval books would do as well. I’d like to trade off from day to day.

  • Have you written any other books that are not published?

Here is a story I have to tell. It is all related to the question. My first book was published by a traditional publisher back in 2000. Then four more followed. But alas, I had young children and many bills and ended up going back to work after awhile. I had maybe fifteen books written that weren’t sold to publishers – not for lack of trying. (I stopped counting the rejection letters after 100.) So I worked and had no time to write. Then about 3 ½ years ago, I lost my job. Another writer friend of mine suggested I self-publish my books on amazon. (Lord knows I had enough of them stored in the closet.) So I did just that. I published all my backstock and then went on to write new books and am now an amazon all-star and bestselling author of historical romance and in the top 100 in this category on amazon. I have one book – a contemporary western – from the past not published. And that’s only because when I changed over from my old computer, it got lost somewhere and I have yet to find it on disks and places I stored them from so long ago. When I do find it, I’ll publish it as well and add to the 54 books I have published at this time.

  • Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

A little of both. If my family and relatives ever actually read my books, they’ll be surprised to find characteristics of themselves in my Tarnished Saints Series. Actually, the old couple that own the bed and breakfast in Doubting Thomas – book one of the series, are a lot like my parents! Hee hee. And the house is really the house they live on now at the lake. (For the record, I convinced both my parents to read this book and they did. Not that they saw any similarities to themselves, of course.)

  • What do your friends and family think of your writing?

This is interesting. Of course since I have boys in their twenties, they are horrified to think of mom writing love scenes and as far as I know they don’t read my books – nor do I want them to. My parents are very religious, so I was the one horrified when my first book came out because I knew they would read it – descriptive love scenes and all. But I’ve always been the rebel of the family and tease them and tell them that is what they get for making me sit out in the hall in gradeschool while the other kids were having sex education. In reality, my mother started reading and enjoying my books after her best friend (my biggest 80-year-old fan) started telling her how wonderful they were. And the biggest surprise is that my mother’s favorite books of mine are the paranormal ones. Huh? Who would have thought she’d really like shapeshifting, vampires and sirens. You never know!

  • Is there a message in your novel that you want the readers to grasp?

Like I said, I like to weave in morals and lessons subliminally in some of my stories. For example, The Dragon and the DreamWalker has a good vs evil storyline with a huge moral at the end that you’ll just have to read for yourself. Touch of Gold is another one with a moral. This moral being that too much of a good thing can often turn terrible if you’re not careful.

  • My Favorite:

Movie: Lady Hawke

Music: Jazz or Acoustic Guitar

Place You’ve Visited: Machu Picchu, Peru

Place You’d Like to Visit: Castles of Scotland and England

TV Show From Childhood: I hate to admit it but, I liked the sitcoms like Brady Bunch, Monkees, Green Acres, Happy Days (anything you can find on METV now.) And Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. And later on, soap operas like General Hospital.

TV Show From Adulthood:  Ok, I still like sitcoms, but I really love reality TV like Amazing Race, Survivor, Master Chef, Big Brother – you name it. I enjoy Once Upon a Time, Lucifer, and Reign and Vikings, but when they start killing off all the major characters, I’m thinking about not watching them anymore. I like happy endings.

Food: Pizza and Coca Cola. Okay, I like junkfood – hotdogs, burgers, chips. And salads too!

Sports Team: None. I am not into sports, sorry.

Board Games or TV? Both. I grew up playing Life, Monopoly, Clue, Masterpiece, etc. I don’t play them anymore really so I guess TV is the answer, but I still like both.

Ramblings of a Lifelong Elvis Fan – Part 83 – Elvis Week – The 39th Anniversary of His Death

Thank you so much for stopping by!]

M0015313797--414582

This coming Tuesday, August 16th, marks the 39th anniversary of Elvis’ death. I know I’ve said this before, but it just does NOT seem like it has been nearly four decades since we lost him.

‘Elvis Week’ is, as the name implies, a week honoring Elvis. It began in 1978, the year after he passed away, starting with a small group of Elvis fans. It has grown like crazy and now is a huge event spanning several days and including multiple guests and a horde of attendees. More evidence that no other entertainer ever has, or ever will, have the kind of impact on the world that Elvis had.

I have yet to visit Graceland during Elvis week. On one hand, I would love to so that I can help be a part of something so monumental and be with thousands of other Elvis fans. On the other hand, I prefer visiting Graceland when it’s not quite such a frenzy of people and activity.

There are many events during Elvis week I would love to see, especially the presentations by those who actually knew him, his friends, co-stars, etc. But something I have no interest in whatsoever—and it is one of the main things Elvis week features–are the Tribute Artists. As I’ve said many times, I do NOT like Elvis impersonators. If it’s not the real thing, then it is nothing to me, not even the slightest bit interesting, appealing, or entertaining. I don’t understand why Graceland and those who knew and loved Elvis are so gung-ho about these guys who try to dress and sing like him. Yes, I know they changed it to ‘Tribute Artists,’ presumably to sound less like they are simply imitating and, in some cases, not very well. To me, rather than being a tribute, I find it a little disrespectful. I know ‘imitation is the sincerest form of flattery’ but again, I don’t need an imitator. I need the REAL thing. But maybe that’s just me?

elvis11

Here are some events that I would love to attend:

  • A Sock Hop with DJ Argo  – Elvis music, dancing, games, and giveaways.
  • Hound Dog Tour: A Musical City Tour Celebrating Elvis by Backbeat Tours – A tour going from BB King’s Blues Club on a bus playing Elvis music. It shows where he grew up, where he went to school, where he worked, and sites important to his early career. It includes an optional visit inside the Presley family apartment at Lauderdale Courts – meticulously restored to its 1950s appearance, a visit to Apartment 328 of the Courts is like taking a step back in time, offering an unparalleled glimpse into the lives of Vernon, Gladys, and young Elvis. The tour includes exciting sites such as Sun Studio, Elvis’ Audubon Drive home, Humes High School, the Overton Park Shell (the amphitheater where he performed his first big show in 1954), Lansky Bros. clothing store, the Memphian Theater and the Chisca Hotel (home of the WHBQ radio station).
  • The Gospel Music of Elvis Presley – Performances by gospel singers who shared the stage with Elvis, and some who were influenced by his music. Elvis imagery and videos will play on a big screen throughout the performance.
  • Conversations on Elvis: Elvis Co-Stars – Two of his co-stars this year that I would really like to see are Warren Berlinger, one of his co-stars in “Spinout” and Celeste Yarnall, a co-star in “Live a Little, Love a Little” This is Elvis and Celeste from the movie:

Color-CY-Elvis

  • An Afternoon with Elvis’ Piano Man, Glen D. Hardin – Elvis’ Piano player shares music and stories.
  • The Sound and Soul of Memphis –  Blues music by local musicians. Performances of Elvis song and other rock, blues and soul music.
  • The Candlelight Vigil
  • George Klein’s Elvis Memorial Service

Some interesting tidbits about Elvis week can be found here:

Maybe I’ll try to go next year. The 40th anniversary of his death should be quite a blowout. Thank you for joining me.   Have a wonderful weekend!

END OF LONELY STREET – Now Only 99 Cents!

On Elvis’ birthday this year, I released a Vintage Romance short story set in 1957, and of course, my heroine is an Elvis fan. 🙂 As a tribute to Elvis’ generosity, and in order to assist with this worthy cause, 10% of my proceeds for End of Lonely Street will go to the EPCF.

All Toby Lawson wants is to go to college to become a teacher and to be free of her alcoholic mother and some painful memories. But when her mother nearly burns the house down, Toby must put her dreams on hold and return home to care for her. The only time she isn’t lonely and miserable is when she’s listening to her heartthrob, Elvis Presley. His music takes her away and helps her escape from everything wrong in her life.

Noah Rivers has always loved Toby, but no matter what he says, she can‘t get past the fact that her drunken mother once kissed him. He soon realizes the true problem lies in Toby’s belief she’s not good enough for him and in her fear she will be just like her mother.

What will it take to prove to her that she deserves to be happy, and that he would give anything to be the man to make her dreams come true?

Ramblings of a Lifelong Elvis Fan – Part 82 – The Movies 23-25 (1967) – Easy Come, Easy Go – Clambake – Double Trouble

[INTRO: I am a die hard, card carrying Elvis fan and have been for as long as I can remember. There is so much about Elvis to love; his incredible singing voice, his generous spirit, his looks (the most gorgeous man ever), his movies (yes, his movies. Easy Come, Easy Go:

Not one of my top Elvis movies, but as long as I can look at him, I enjoy ANY of his movies.  I didn’t feel Elvis and his love interest had much chemistry, and Elvis usually has great chemistry with his leading ladies. Also, their love story didn’t really develop. They didn’t have many moments or sexual tension, etc, but at the end, they were just together.

About: Elvis plays Lt. Ted Jackson, a Navy frogman who recently got out of the service and is singing for a living. He discovers a buried treasure and decides to go after it. The treasure belonged to the grandfather of Elvis’ love interest (played by Dodie Marshall who was also in Spinout). She is none too pleased to learn Elvis is after it, but she decides to help him after extracting a promise that he’ll donate the money to a commune for her hippie artsy friends. Someone else is after the treasure too, and although there are some dicey moments at the end, with a little help from his friends, Elvis gets the treasure and the girl. However, they discover the coins are not gold and are almost worthless. The ‘team’ donates their shares to the girl anyway, so she has enough to help her friends.

Side notes: The move was originally planned by Paramount as a vehicle for Jan and Dean, but after a train wreck that injured them an many of their crew, the project ws scrapped and the script was rewritten for Elvis.

This was the last movie Elvis and Hal Wallis did together.

The director, John Rich, is the only director in Elvis’ movie career he didn’t get along with. He’d also directed Roustabout. While filming a scene in Easy Come, Easy Go, Elvis and Red West kept screwing up and laughing. The director was pissed and threw all of Elvis’ buddies out. Elvis was furious. He told the director and producers, “Now, just a minute. We’re doing these movies because it’s supposed to be fun, nothing more. Now when they cease to be fun, then we’ll cease to do them.”

Favorite Song: I wasn’t crazy about the songs in this movie, but I suppose my favorite would be You Gotta Stop. The title song isn’t bad.

Favorite Scene: It would probably have to be him in the all-black shirt and pants doing yoga. Adorable!

Double Trouble:

I enjoyed this movie because it was different, since it took place in Europe and had sort of a crime caper feel to it. It was actually filmed in California. Other than when in the army, Elvis never visited Europe.  Elvis had many scenes in fog,  which is very sexy. 🙂

About: Elvis plays Guy Lambert, an American singer who falls for a teenage heiress whose uncle, it turns out, is trying to kill her. They are chased and murder is attempted throughout the movie until the end, where the bad guys are caught and Elvis gets the girl.

Side Notes: An Elvis fan bought a jacket as a gift to Elvis. Elvis told her to watch the movie carefully when it came out. The film came out and she saw that the jacket was in the suitcase which belongs to Elvis’ character on film.

This was the first and only movie Annette Day (his leading lady) ever made.

Elvis gave Annette a sports car as a gift, which she later gave to her brother.

Favorite Song: Probably Long-Legged Girl.

Favorite Scenes: I loved any of the scenes where he fought. And there was a really sexy part where he threw a chair through a glass window. I loved this line after the rich uncle says that as a musician Elvis can’t have much money. Then he says, “I didn’t mean to offend.” Elvis says, “I’m not  offended, I’m just in a hurry. I don’t want to lose my place in the brad line.” In this really annoyed sexy way. (Are you sensing a ‘sexy’ theme to my recap of Elvis movies???) 🙂

Clambake

LOVE this movie. Sigh…Elvis was so sexy and I always love Shelley Fabares as his leading lady. And, Bill Bixby is in it, and I loved watching him in Elvis movies. He plays the perfect cad in Clambake. This was another movie where people said Elvis was fat. UGH…SO not true.

About: Elvis plays Scott Heyward, the rich son of a rich oil field magnate who is discouraged because he feels women only love him for his money. (Yeah, right!). He takes off for some ‘me-time’ and heads to Miami Beach. On the way, he meets poor water ski instructor, Tom Wilson, and they switch identities so Scott can see what it’s like to have people know him for who he really is. He meets Shelley (Dianne), who is there to look for a rich man and finds him in the form of Bill Bixby. But, of course, she ends up falling for Elvis, he wins the boat race and all live Happily Ever After. One reason I love this movie so much is that there was true chemistry between Elvis and Shelley, and there were some emotional, angsty moments that I always enjoy. You could really see the romance develop, which was lacking in some of his films.

Side Notes:

The movie was set in Florida but filmed in California. In some shots, you can see the California mountains in the background. 🙂

Elvis was becoming more discouraged with his film career at the time this movie was made and he and his buddies pulled more shenanigans than usual on the set.

Elvis’ character used a mobile phone and the gas station attendant remarked something to the effect of, “That must be one heck of a long cord.”

One of the children at the playground during the song “Confidence” is Corbin Bernsen.

Lee Majors visited the set and filmed a cameo; he can be seen in the background of the restaurant scene, wearing a fake mustache.

Favorite Song: Probably “You Don’t Know Me” – Check it out here:

Favorite Scene:  Just before he sings the above song. Shelley comes to see him before her big date with Jameson (Bill Bixby) and the scene is charged with sexual tension. She turns to leave and Elvis says, “Hey, come here.” (in this cave-man sexy way) She returns to him and he takes her hanky from her purse and says, “Blot.” He blots her lips and then tosses the hanky away aggressively and tugs her hair out of its pins and settles it loosely around her shoulders. He gives her a smoldering look and says, “Unless Jameson is blind, maybe he can see the forest for the trees.” Sigh…

Thank you for joining me. Have you seen these movies? What did you think?
