Tuesday Two-Minute Writing Tip – Pssst…I have a Secret

Got two minutes? Then check out this week’s quick tip ~ Using secrets to keep readers turning pages

Hello and welcome…I am a freelance editor and an editor for The Wild Rose Press, as well as an author. I often struggle with my own writing, and I have found that sometimes, a little reminder of ways to improve the process can be helpful, so, I like to share these moments of brilliance with others :). But, in this busy world of ours, who has time for pages and pages of writing tips? That’s why I’ve condensed mine down to quick flashes you can read in (approximately) two minutes. Enjoy…

TWoMinuteTip

Disclaimer: All of my tips are suggestions, and are only my opinion. And, for the most part, there are exceptions when going against my advice will make your story read better. Take what works, leave the rest.

Ha, I bet, after reading the title, you’re dying to hear the secret, right? Come on, admit. It’s human nature. We all love to be in on secrets. We love hearing them, having them, telling them, so on and so forth. Secrets in your story can be a great tool to engage readers. There are a few different ways to use them. You can introduce a secret that is being withheld from readers, and they’ll keep reading to learn the secret. You can let the readers in on a secret that your character(s) don’t know, and they’ll keep reading to see how the characters will react once they learn the secret, which is lots of fun, because your audience loves being in on the surprise with you.

Something to keep in mind, though, it’s also crucial to have a big payoff when the secret is revealed. I’ve begun watching the tv show, “Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce,” which is kind of an odd choice for me, because it lacks my two favorite things in shows and movies; humor and murder. (I know, a weird combo). The show is fairly amusing, but totally devoid of killings. However, it caught my attention so I’m watching anyway. There are lots of secrets on the show, but in one instance, the payoff was a letdown. Spoiler Alert: The main couple is divorcing when the show opens. As the episodes play out, they decide to try to reconcile. The man learns that he impregnated his much younger ex-girlfriend, whom he cheated with (or with whom he cheated, I suppose, is the proper wording) during the marriage. Other characters in the show knew about the pregnancy, but his soon-to-be ex wife did not, and these people kept telling him, “You better tell Abby before she finds out on her own” and “Wow, how is Abby going to react?” etc, etc. Since the couple were trying to make a precarious, contentious marriage work, I waited anxiously for her to find out. I just knew she was going to explode. Finally, the episode came where she learned the truth and, much to my disappointment, she took it like a champ. I’m thinking, why all the build-up, waiting episode after episode for her to find out, if she’s all “oh, yeah? no biggie, that’s kinda cool, actually, cuz there’ll be a new baby around” about it. (I paraphrase). But, the point is, she should have lost her freaking mind. SO, don’t make that mistake. If you tease readers with a secret, you need to have a big reveal, and a big explosion.

I’m currently working on two WIPs simultaneously. One is only 12,000 words or so, and there’s not much time for a lot to happen. I have a little suspense, a little romance, but I’ve just realized, I can probably make it more enticing by adding a secret. So, I’m brainstorming a way to include one. My other WIP is my Martini Club 4 story, set in the 1940s. My heroine finds out a horrible secret about her mother, around mid-story. It has just occurred to me that I should let the readers in on the secret early in the book. Then, hopefully, they’ll keep reading because they will be eager for her to find out and see how she will react, how this knowledge will impact her life.

As you’re plotting (or for you pantsers, as your characters are writing the story for you ;)), maybe look for ways to work in a tantalizing secret. Your characters might not thank you, but your readers will. Oh yeah, and about that secret I mentioned in the title? Well, I guess you’ll just have to keep reading my posts to find out what it is. Muwahahahahaha….

Until next time…Happy Writing!

How to write a novel? That is the question. There are probably as many answers to that question as there are people who ask it.

Wanting to write and actually doing it are two very different things. I am well acquainted with the sometimes grueling process of churning out a story. Over the years, I have tried many methods for creating and completing manuscripts, and have tweaked and honed it down to a workable (for me) process.

Using specific examples from one of my own novels, Without Mercy, I share my method in this mini how to book. The first eight steps actually deal with plotting while the last two are designed to help expand your outline into a well-developed draft. There is no one, perfect way to create a story, but there will be a method, or methods that work for you. I’m not sure if this is the one, but it works for me. Only you can decide if it also works for you. Fingers crossed that it does!

*** Warning – Please do not purchase without reading a sample. (This is solid advice for any book, fiction or non. If you are not intrigued in the sample, you will likely not enjoy the book)

Snippet A:

The low rumble of galloping horse hooves reached his ears. The sheriff caught a quick movement and watched as the westbound stagecoach came into view past the blacksmith shop. He stilled. The four-horse team ran wild, tossing their heads and kicking up dust clouds. The coach zigzagged down the center of town, the groan of leather harnesses and the creak of wheels getting louder.

Hell. Instinct pushed him to action. Quinn sprinted to the middle of Main Street and unholstered his gun. Waiting until the horses were close, he aimed his gun over the roof of the jail and fired.

Snippet B:

The wide smile and bright flash that lit her eyes gave her face a gamine look. One that hit him square in the chest. Needing to pull his attention from the surprise of that reaction, Kell glanced to where she pointed and made note of the sign proclaiming Othmann Dry Goods-Hardware-Meat. “I aim to walk my horse over. Do you need help with the buggy?”

“No, but thank ye. I’m quite able to handle this small conveyance. On me family’s dairy farm during me growing years, I handled draft horses pulling heavy wagons.”

Snippet C:

Turning from the window, she tucked the duster into its space on a low shelf and spun away, walking on tiptoes before dropping her boots flat. Could she do a back bend in this dress? Bracing apart her legs, she raised her hands over her head, arched her spine, and then leaned backward. Her muscles protested against the unaccustomed strain, forcing her upright again. Oh, phooey. She was too out of shape to do this simple acrobatic move.

What is there to do?

Snippet A:

I caught a whiff of his cologne. Polo Red. It didn’t seem right for Santa to smell sexy. I wondered if he had really been dumped on Valentine’s Day and who he was and what he looked like beneath the costume.

Yet another part of me liked that he was Santa. For now, I wanted him to be Santa. Ever since Adam had broken my heart, I had been cautious when it came to men. I had dated a couple of guys but I had kept my distance. I glanced at Santa. I felt safe with Santa. What girl wouldn’t?

Snippet B:

He bristled. “How much do you know about babies?”

“I’m clueless when it comes to babies. I don’t know anything about them.” She dipped a chip in the cheese before she lifted her gaze to his face. “But I do know a baby should have a mother and father if at all possible.”

His blue eyes narrowed. “I suppose that should be you and Dallas Peyton.”

Oh, shit, he’s Googled me. She took a moment to eat the chip. “No.” She dabbed her mouth with the napkin. “Not me and Dallas.” There was no her and Dallas, but that was a well-guarded secret.

Snippet C:

She was fine, and he was available. So there you go.

“I’ve heard we’re going to have great weather this weekend,” he said, throwing some bait her way. He tapped the elevator handrail. For the first time ever, he wished the elevator would move a little slower.

She batted those baby blues at him. “There’s a storm coming.”

A storm? He had watched the weather report on TV before he left his house. Sunny autumn weekend, high in the seventies, no rain. “I don’t think so.”

“Oh, I’m fairly certain of it,” she insisted, lowering her lashes.

Book 3:

The Mad Monk’s Treasure by Kris Bock

Snippet A

She leaned forward and ran her fingers over the grainy photograph. With that one image, everything seemed to fall into place. This was the clue. It had to be.

She fumbled in her desk drawer for a magnifying glass and studied the symbols in the photo more closely. At a glance, they looked like your standard Indian petroglyphs. You could find them throughout the Southwest, tucked away in caves or scattered among boulder fields.

 But this was different.

If she was right—and she had to be right—these symbols were a map.

Snippet B:

The house creaked again, followed by a rhythmic sound – like footsteps. Jenny jerked upright, her ears straining. Had she heard a voice?

She shook her head. She must still be half asleep, dreaming. Imagining her grandparents were still here. Wishful thinking.

Downstairs, a door closed. Jenny clutched the blanket. Imagination be damned. She was not alone.

For a long moment, she sat frozen. During her ten years in New York City, she had never been burglarized or mugged. It seemed impossible that such a thing should happen now, here, in an off-season art camp five miles outside of Jemez Springs, New Mexico.

Snippet C:

I tried to focus on this one moment, the physical sensations of my aching body as I lay on the hard, damp ground. The cold against my bare calves, the lump of rock pressing into my shoulder. That focus helped keep me grounded in the present. Never mind that this present wasn’t a place I wanted to be. I had to deal with reality. But I didn’t have to also deal with nightmares. Not now.

Author Lulu M. Sylvian – How Writers are Like Burlesque Dancers

Please help me welcome author Lulu M. Sylvian with an interesting article…

burlesquedancer

The Art of the Tease

… or why authors reveal a bit at a time.

Sneak peaks, previews, movie trailers, “coming up next on…” are all ways to pique your interest in a new upcoming work.

The reveal is a way to lure you in, get you interested, make you, the viewer, want to come back.

Burlesque dancers know about the art of the slow reveal, building anticipation, building the need, the desire to see more. The dancer knows not to show off everything at once. From a slow costume reveal with the removal of a long coat, to hiding behind a large feathered fan a burlesque dancer takes her time exposing only what she wants to expose. The dancer knows the audience’s pay off will be more satisfactory, more explosive if they are made to wait. The dancer builds an audience, and cultivates fans by beguiling her viewers.

Authors who slowly reveal excerpts, covers, and character profiles are doing the same thing. They are revealing a literary shoulder here, and a paragraphical midriff there. The whole point is to tease the audience just enough to make them want more. As an author the goal is to intrigue the reader, and have the reader long for the ultimate payoff, keep them chomping at the bit. There is an art to teasing the reader for long enough to keep them hooked, but not too long so they lose interest when it comes time for the full reveal of the complete story.

The whole purpose of teasing the reader is to make them hungry for more. So hungry that they follow the author on Facebook, blogs, Twitter, and any and all other social outlets, just to catch a glimpse or a hint of the new project. Of course in the end the payoff for the reader is to have their hands wrapped around the pages of the new book, or cradling their digital device with that new novel on the screen. For the author the pay off is that reader coming back for more glimpses, more teases, more book sales.

Just like the dancer who practices, and spends money and time preparing for a performance, authors spend countless hours behind the scenes. A well planned program of marketing (the drawn out tease) leading up to a book release involves scheduling, creating graphics, programming, and deciding which snippets will lure the reader in the most. These are the costuming and rehearsals and makeup of an authors’ enticing performance.

A good tease will lead the reader by the hand into more excitement and more build up. Some authors will expand the reveal into the hype and thrill of pre-release with more and longer glimpses into the work: blog tours, well timed give aways, and launch parties.

In the end, it’s the fluid movement of the dancer, and the show that brings their audience back for more. The tease may keep them on the edge of their seat, but its the delivery of the entire performance that has them sitting back in their chair, closing the book and sighing with satisfaction.

Lulu is an as yet un-published author. She writes paranormal and contemporary romance, and is learning the marketing dance that all authors need to know. Release of her first novel, Protective, is in the works for 2017. You can follow her on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. She collects resources for marketing and other author tools on Pinterest. She practices the reveal tease and interviews on her blog at www.lmsylvian.com.

Tuesday Two-Minute Writing Tip – Flesh out Characters Using Facebook Games

Got two minutes? Then check out this week’s quick tip ~ Using the ‘getting to know’ you games on Facebook to get to know your characters

We’ve all seen them, and, admit it, many of us have played them. Those Facebook games where we answer a list of questions about ourselves, then challenge our Facebook friends to do the same. It occurred to me, if this helps us get to know our FB friends, might it also help us get to know our characters? Below are a few examples of the questions that have found their way around Facebook:

Set One:

💉Tattoos…….
🚼Children……….
😷Surgery….
🔫Shot a gun……
✌Quit a job……..
✈Flown on a plane…
🚙💨100+miles in a car….
😨Gone zip lining…
😢Cried over someone…
😍Fell in love….
🏃🏽‍♀️Skipped school….
👶🏻Watched someone give birth?
💀Watched someone die?
🍁Been to Canada…
🚑Ridden in an ambulance..
🌴Been to Hawaii?..
🐫Been to Europe…
🏦Been to Washington DC
🌞Visited Florida…
🏖 Visited Texas …
🎲Visited NY, NY….
🎤Sang karaoke….
🐶Had a pet………..
🏂Been sledding on a big hill…
🎿Been downhill skiing…
💨Rode a motorcycle…
🐎Rode a horse…..
🏥Stayed in a hospital….
💉Donated blood…
🚗Driven a stick..
🚓Rode in the back of a police car..

Set Two: (Forgive me if some are repeated)

1. Are you named after someone?
2. Last time you cried?
3. Do you like your handwriting?
4. What is your favorite lunch meat?
5. Do you have kids?
6. Do you use sarcasm?
7. Do you still have your tonsils?
8. Would you bungee jump?
9. What is your favorite kind of cereal?
10. Do you untie your shoes when you take them off?
11. Do you think you’re strong?
12. What is your favorite ice cream?
13. What is the first thing you notice about someone?
14. Football or Baseball?
15. What is the most favorite thing you like about yourself?
16. What color pants are you wearing?
17. Last thing you ate?
18. What are you listening to right now?
19. If you were a crayon, what color would you be?
20. Favorite smell?
21. Who was the last person you spoke to on the phone?
23. Hair color?
24. Eye color?
25. Favorite food to eat?
26. Scary movies or happy?
27. Last movie ?
28. What color shirt are you wearing?
29. Favorite holiday?

Of course, not all of the questions are applicable. If you’re writing a historical, you won’t answer the ones about the last movie they watched or who they last spoke with on the phone.  Others might not work for various reasons, but if you answer at least a portion of these for your character(s), it seems to me like it would help to make them more real, more well-developed. And, for some of the questions, you might want to expand a little. If your character has been in the back of a police car, what’s the story there? For me, the answer is ‘yes’ but not because I was arrested. I attended a Citizen’s Police course where we had the opportunity to ride in the back of a police car while an officer took us through the obstacle course. Your character might have a MUCH more interesting experience. 🙂

So…the next time you see a post asking you to share intimate detail about yourself, consider answering them about your character instead, or in addition to, it’s your life. 🙂

Until next time…Happy Writing!

New Release: Unimaginable Lover by Rosalie Redd

Today’s guest, Rosalie Redd has a very special interview for us…

Want to meet Tanen, the hero of Unimaginable Lover, book 3 in the Warriors of Lemuria series? I sat down with him for a brief interview…

Did you turn out the way your parents predicted?

Tanen adjusts himself in the chair and straightens the collar on his shirt. His brow furrows. “Much to my chagrin, no. My father was a warrior. I was a disappointment to him.”

I squirm in my seat. I am uncomfortable in the presence of this large male. “Why is that?”

He crosses his arms, his biceps bulging tight against his shirt sleeves. “Because I didn’t follow in his footsteps. Instead, I chose to pursue knowledge and my love of the ancient scriptures.”

What is your most treasured possession?

Tanen traces his finger along the pin that graces his collar. The silver metal, in the shape of the letter M, reflects the overhead lights with an unearthly glint. “My pin. It signifies my status as council leader and represents Lemuria and life ever after.”

I stroke my fingers over the keyboard as I record his comments. The sound echoes around the large chamber, and a cool breeze runs over my shoulder. Goosebumps form.

He leans back in his chair and touches one of the sunstones lining the cave walls. The gem flares, brightening the room and the air warms. “Is that better? The crystals will take away the chill.”

“Thank you, Tanen.”

What do you value most?

He studies me for a moment before answering, his gaze flicking over my features. “King Noeh’s respect. I will do whatever he asks to help win this war against our enemy, the Gossum, and for our goddess, Alora.”

I can’t help but smile at his sincerity.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

The muscles in his arms visibly tense. His gaze tracks to my necklace, and he cracks his knuckles. “I’d rather not say.”

My unease is once again forefront in my mind. The chair is suddenly rock-hard beneath my bottom and no amount of heat in the room will take away the chill running down my spine.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?

The smile returns to his face. His blue eyes swirl with gold flecks, mixing together in a beautiful dance.

Despite my nervousness, I’m mesmerized.

He winks. “Ignorance.”

When he didn’t elaborate further, I clear my throat. “Time to move on.”

What scares you?

He places his arms on his thighs and leans forward. “Failing my king.”

I wouldn’t want to face this warrior in a dark alley.

What happens after you die?

A slow smile curls his lips, twinkling the blue in his eyes once again. “When a warrior dies his soul returns to Lemuria, back to the character board to fight again in another war on another planet.”

“Thank you, Tanen, for the interview.”

He places his hand over mine and gives it a gentle squeeze. “You’re welcome, Rosalie.”

Thank you, Rosalie and Tanen. I enjoyed getting to know you. Now, pelase tell us about your story…

unimaginableloverothersites

Blurb:

A shifter and a human together? Unimaginable…

One careless decision. The colony betrayed. Tanen’s only course is a desperate hunt for justice, but his solo mission is cut short when he’s mortally wounded during a fight. Rescued by a sweet, innocent female who nurses him back to health, he can’t deny the passion that burns between them. Now he must choose between his duty and honor or his desire for the precious, but forbidden, human female.

Broken promises and ruined love hardened Sheri’s heart. When she finds an injured and extraordinarily sexy man on her property, she’s pulled into a world she never imagined. As she nurses him back to health and they bond over their love of books, she’s torn between the lessons she learned from her rough past and the need to seek solace in Tanen’s arms, but she must learn to trust him, and herself, in order to survive.

Excerpt:

Sheri’s pulse raced as a strange mixture of shock and desire coursed through her veins. The tall, muscular stranger pinned her against the wall. One second she’d pressed 9-1—on her phone and the next, she was here, in his arms.

His biceps bulged, and she had a sudden urge to run her fingers over them, feel the steel that was below the surface, but her hands were trapped at his hips. She gripped his taut waist, and his heat bore into her, warming her fingers, tingling the sensitive nerves. Although caged in his embrace, he was gentle with her, holding back the strength that ebbed from him in waves. As he leaned in, his breath cascaded over her shoulder, warm and enticing.

“No infirmary.” His gravelly, rough command came out on a whisper.

She should’ve feared him, this stranger in her home trapping her in his arms, but instead, her insides melted, warmed by his touch, his voice, his scent. Something about him made her long for more.

So focused on the man who held her so close, she hadn’t noticed Coop. His insistent barks echoed through the house.

The man tensed, and in the process his lean body pressed tighter against hers. Her skin prickled at the contact.

With a quick glance over his shoulder, she caught sight of her pet. He growled, his lips curled over his fangs.

“No, Coop. Stop!”

His back legs bunched in preparation for his attack.

The man didn’t release her, but turned to face her dog. He held out one hand, palm open. “Halt.”

Coop’s growl faded.

He took a tentative step forward.

His nose quivered, and a small whimper eased from his chest. Her pet, an ex-police dog trained to track and defend, placed his muzzle under the stranger’s palm.

She gasped. If she hadn’t seen this for herself, she wouldn’t have believed it. He patted Coop on the head, and the dog’s tail beat against the floor.

The man’s eyes were red-rimmed, and sweat coated his forehead. “I have to leave…”

His eyes glazed over, and his grip around her waist loosened.

As her hands traveled along the space between them, her fingers trailed over the firm muscles of his abdomen and chest. The strength and power under his skin lit up her nerves. She moved a stray hair away from his brow and focused on his eyes. Bottomless pools of blue, they reflected the pain hidden behind his features.

Her chest constricted. “Please, let me help you.”

His gaze fell to her mouth, and he reached up to stroke her bottom lip with his thumb, teasing her. “How? Like this?”

Before she could stop him, he slipped his hand around the base of her neck and pulled her close. His mouth hovered over hers for the briefest moment. She closed her eyes, aware that doing so was an invitation all its own. Warm and welcoming, his lips tasted of musk and pepper. With unexpected tenderness, he teased her with his tongue, caressing the crease between her lips. The sensitive nerves tingled at the contact and she inhaled, parting her mouth.

Moaning softly, he deepened the kiss, and explored her. His tongue brushed the sore spot in her mouth, but instead of pain, his smooth caress eased some of the ache. The passionate need in his kiss bore into her, sending a wave of desire to her core. Beneath the thin material of her shirt, her nipples peaked, and she couldn’t hide her reaction to him. A slow groan rumbled in his chest.

Still Missing Elvis – His 82nd Birthday

Nov. 14, 1970: Elvis Presley in concert at the Forum in Inglewood. Photo by Harry Chase/Los Angeles Times

Eighty-two years ago today, Elvis Aaron Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi. He was one of twins, but his brother, Jesse Garon, died at birth. Unless you live in a cave (and have never been out of it), no matter what age you are, what kind of music you listen to, you know who Elvis is. He grew up poor and rocketed to stardom and became the most well-known, dynamic entertainer of all time. Of course, in my opinion, the most talented, charismatic, sexy, etc, etc. I even love watching his movies. (I say ‘even’ because they are not exactly critically acclaimed, but watching him brings me joy, no matter the medium).

tumblr_mfwx37hm5u1rmnjtyo1_500

I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that he would be eighty-two. I’m not sure what he would be doing now, what he would look like, but I would imagine he’d still be in the spotlight, entertaining. He died when I was sixteen, and his death was truly devastating–to me and to my sisters. The world has suffered a great deal of celebrity deaths in 2016, and yes, people are sad about them. (On a side note, I see posts from people who criticize those who are sad over celebrity deaths when we have soldiers dying, etc. However, I believe it is because some might feel more connected to the celebrities. They are familiar with them, not to mention, the media shares the news about the deaths. If we saw personal articles on each soldier’s death, with pictures and stories about their lives, etc, we would react in a more personal way.  That’s just my opinion. Yes, it’s more tragic for a young man or woman to give their life serving their country than for a wealthy celebrity to pass, but maybe cut those who are posting about it some slack. It just so happens that the celebrity is the topic du jour at the time.) But I digress…back to Elvis… The grief we (and many fans) felt over his death was different, I believe, than the sadness most people feel over celebrities. It was like, and in some ways worse than, losing a family member. From the time I discovered him at the young age of 5’ish, he was a huge part of my life. My sisters and I watched his movies each time they aired and also caught them as often as we could at our local movie theater, The Chieftain, in Oklahoma City.

largechief large

I listened to his music almost all the time. I dreamed of growing up and marrying him. I learned every detail I could about him and his life. I plastered my walls with his posters. I was lucky enough to see three of his concerts, and was anxious to go to more, but unfortunately, the concert I attended in March, 1977 was the last of his I would ever see.

Not only did Elvis entertain me, he actually made me feel deeply happy (and yes, sad at times as well). All of my life, even now, if I’m feeling sad or stressed, I can watch or listen to Elvis and he lifts my mood. He’s even intertwined with my dream of being a writer. My first ever story (which I wrote at ten years old) was a romance with a hero who looked just like Elvis, and I mentioned Elvis frequently, and named my hero Lonnie Beale, after Elvis’ character in Tickle Me. I even titled it “Just Pretend” which is one of my favorite Elvis songs.

Here is a shot of the hand-written copy of my story, which I still have. 🙂

Just pretend 1190914

Elvis is still a huge part of my life. I named my son Presley, I’ve gone to Graceland half a dozen times or so and would love to go again and again, I use him in all my passwords, I listen to his music,  I watch his movies, I mention him in almost all my books, and I blogged about him regularly for over a year (although I did let that slide. I still have a few Elvis blog posts left in me, though. :)). I even wrote a romance short story published through The Wild Rose Press, set in 1957 that revolves around Elvis. The title is End of Lonely Street. Can anyone guess how I came up with that? 🙂

EndofLonelyStreet_w9180_750

(The short story is available in ebook for only 99 cents: https://www.amazon.com/End-Lonely-Street-Alicia-Dean-ebook/dp/B00QQO3BK0/ – and, it’s part of a print book of four other of my Wild Rose Press short stories: https://www.amazon.com/Love-Dangerously-Alicia-Dean/dp/1509213112/)

I just wanted to pay tribute, share my thoughts about someone who had such a major impact on my life. I think one reason that Elvis was so special was not only his phenomenal talent, but his heart. He was down to Earth (in spite of all the glitz and bling :)), loving, generous, and extremely appreciative of his fans. He was good to his friends, his family, his daughter, and even his ex-wife. No other celebrity has ever or will ever make the impact Elvis has made. Nearly forty years after his death, fans flock to see his home, to celebrate his life and mourn his death.

Happy Birthday, Elvis. You are loved and missed by millions of people all over the world.

New Release: Training Tessa by Debra Doggett

Please help me welcome Debra Doggett, a fellow Authors Helping Authors member who has a brand new release!

I used to tell people I got a history degree because I didn’t have to take math classes for it. That was only part of the reason, but back then being a history nerd didn’t give off the best aura. Even my dad said he didn’t understand how I could take those classes because history was boring. It was one of the few things we disagreed on. Growing up, my hero was James Michener. It wasn’t only that he could write like nobody else, but he wrote history. His work inspired me, and one day I plan to write my own historical epic. My first attempt at dipping my toe into that goal was Training Tessa. I set this story in Renaissance Italy, one of my favorite time periods. It gave me an excuse to dig back into that time and place, making the writing fun. One of the biggest reasons for it, however, was the way sensuality permeated art, and life. Yes, there were lots of naysayers, but artists in particular began to look at the human body as sensual. That concept fit well with the story. I hope the story fits well with you.

51m0h-broal

Blurb:

Meretessa Brexiano believes in love. Her heart yearns for a true bond with the man she weds. She also believes she can change her fate. Refusing the marriage her father has arranged, she strikes a bargain with a man she hopes can teach her the art of seduction. Nicolo da Parma is a businessman with a reputation as a connoisseur of women. Their sensuality is the palette he has painted on since his youth. This time, however, he may have struck a bargain which costs more than he planned. Training Tessa might be the greatest challenge to his own heart Nicolo’s ever had.

Excerpt:

Nicolo reached a hand toward her. “Seduction is a slow process, Tessa, a process which begins with you. It begins in here.” He tapped her forehead. “Do you even know what your own body looks like?”

She moved, grateful for even a small space between them. “That’s ridiculous! Of course I know what I look like. I see myself every day.”

“Ah, but do you really see? How can you tempt a lover with a body you are not even aware of?”

Before she could protest, he swallowed up the small, safe distance. Strange sensations stirred within her, leaving her without the ability to form the words she knew she should be saying. Nicolo’s fingers untied the lace along her bodice. He slipped the thin scarf through his hand with a sensual caress that made her shiver. What would those fingers feel like against her skin? As his hand slid over her shoulder, his fingers nudged her dress down, letting the fabric glide to the top of her breasts. He leaned in close and for a moment she thought he might kiss her. Tessa wondered what his lips would feel like, what they would taste like.

Author Kayden Claremont – New Release: – Why She Loves Kilts

Please help me welcome fellow Authors Helping Authors member, Kayden Claremont, sharing her ‘hot’ new release!

I love a man in a Kilt, I mean—who doesn’t.

When The Wild Rose Press asked for stories for their Real Men Wear Kilts series I was in heaven. I went through the usual list of placed you’d find a kilt-wearing hunk, but decided to have Brodie Murdock wear his kilt every day. After all, it would be such a pity to save all the scrumptiousness just for special occasions.

Since I write paranormal erotic romance, I had to come up with his paranormal quality. I made Brodie Murdock a kilt-wearing, motorcycle-riding hottie with a secret he can only share with his destined mate.

Brodie took over the story so I had to make sure Cora Siegfried was he match in every way. She became a kick-ass heroine who wouldn’t back down from fighting for the man she loves.

With his throne on the line, Brodie Murdock needs to secure his kingdom by taking a bride. When the only woman he’s ever wanted, Cora Siegfried, steps right into his path, he knows the legends are true. She is his destiny. But will she agree?

Blurb: Financial planner Cora Siegfried has returned to her hometown to settle her late father’s estate. Get in, get out, that’s the plan. When she’s almost run over by a kilt-wearing hottie on a motorcycle, all her well-laid plans go up in smoke, and all she can think about is getting well laid by her childhood crush. But after what she hoped would be a one-night stand, leaving him might not be as easy. Talk about a tartan temptation.

With his throne on the line, Brodie Murdock needs to secure his kingdom by taking a bride. When the only woman he’s ever wanted steps right into his path, he knows the legends are true. She is his destiny. The feisty female isn’t hard to seduce into his bed for the night, but she’s proving difficult to convince they are meant for forever. And then there’s the secret that could destroy any chance of their future–a secret he’s not ready to confess. Not until his stubborn soul mate admits she needs him for more than sex.

Snippet:

She rubbed her brow. That’s what she did when she was gathering her thoughts. “I can’t list the house without a stupid piece of paper from the lawyer, and he had to go away on a family emergency. What about my family emergency? My father died. Nobody cares about that.”

Brodie turned the bike off, set it on its kickstand, and stood. He shouldn’t touch her, but he wrapped his arms around her and drew her against him. “I care.”

Doubt filled her dark blue eyes. “Why? Why do you care about me?”

Destiny. She’d think he was crazy, but it was the truth. He’d always understood it. “How could I not care about you?”

Taking a step back, she shook her head. The startled expression on her face told him he’d gone too far.

She hesitated then glared at him. “What do you want?”

He glanced up at the stormy cloud, then back at her. He hadn’t fooled her at all. He was running out of time. He had to win her trust now. “Ice cream. I need ice cream. You need ice cream. We all need ice cream.” He smiled, hoping his charm worked this time.

Disbelief shone in her eyes. “Now?”

Snippet A:

‘Take me to your master immediately,’ she started in a voice as cold and steady she could manage, ‘so I can ask him to have you whipped for your insolence.’

There was a collective gasp from the people around them. Not looking in the least impressed, the man crossed his arms on his broad chest and arched his eyebrows.

     ‘Really?’

     She took another deep breath.

‘That’s what I do to disrespectful servants on my estate, and I can assure you they stop smirking after five lashes.’ That was an outrageous lie, of course, but no one here was to know.

Snippet B:

Who did the woman think he was to summon him to her room like that? A lackey, probably. His lips twisted in an angry snarl as he climbed the stairs two by two. Madame Norton might live in a ramshackle manor house on the bleak, windswept Devonshire moorland, but she was still a Beauregard on her mother’s side and a member of the English gentry by marriage. He should have followed Martin’s advice and stayed at the club a while longer.

He walked down the draughty corridor and drummed impatient fingers on her door.

‘Who’s there?’  A timid voice answered from behind the door.

Snippet C:

‘A diversion? That’s a mild way of putting it,’ he sneered. ‘The girls’ dancing was… ahem… striking, to say the least. Ask that poor old man who collapsed.’ He drew in a deep breath. ‘Anyway, where did you learn to dance like that?’

She lowered her eyes, snapped a leaf from a nearby bush and tore it into tiny pieces that spiralled to the ground. ‘Malika taught me, in secret. She always said I was good enough to be one of them.’

She was right, her dancing had been entrancing, mesmerising, but he wasn’t going to tell her.

Snippet A

She raised her arms, about to send the yoga mats back to their proper place when the heavy wooden front door creaked open. Piper rushed toward the door, teeth bared and a growl rumbled in her throat. Summer whirled around and yelped as Devlin ambled into the room, black hair tousled and glistening with melting snowflakes. His nonchalance at the dog’s approach surprised her as he slowed to a stop. Piper sniffed around him, backed up a few inches, then stood at alert in front of Devlin.

“You scared the bejeebers out of me.” Summer held her hand to her chest as her heart thundered.

“What are you doing here?”

Snippet B:

Angie chortled. “Not him silly girl.”  She raised an eyebrow and grinned at Willow. “The owner, Bruce is his name, I believe.  Now he’s hot.”

Willow scowled and her eyes widened.  “Oh, Angie, that’s not smart.  I’ve heard about him, tall, dark, handsome and mysterious.  Just your type, but he’s not human.  The faery realm’s heard tell of him, he’s dangerous and vicious.  He rules the western hemisphere with an iron fist, keeping magic folk honest and in their place.  One misstep and you’re history.”  She drew an index finger across her throat then flopped her head to one side.

Snippet C:

She sliced her arm through the air. Unseen forces slammed Mr. Green to the ground. His eyes glowed an eerie green. Pain erupted in Pepper’s head. He was drawing on her magic. Suddenly, a rainbow shower of knife-sharp feathers zoomed out of the cabin door, across the air, and sliced through the man’s clothes, pinning him to the ground. Red and blue flashing lights reflected against the cabin’s wet exterior. The sirens’wail echoed all around her, and Kaylee’s scream broke through the chaos, then everything went black.

Lathen slammed on the brakes as he turned into the driveway behind the police vehicle

Snippet A:

“Suppose a woman wanted to not do all those things? Suppose she wanted to sit in Parliament? Or visit Tattersall’s on a Tuesday for the auctions, or visit White’s, or a gaming hell?” Her voice rose as all the things she had been denied that she never knew she cared about bubbled to the surface.

He opened and closed his mouth several times before he spoke. “You want to go to a gaming hell?”

All the air left her lungs and she felt deflated, like a balloon that had a pin stuck in it. Of course she didn’t want to go to a gaming hell. What she wanted was to have her husband make love to her like he had his mistress.

Snippet B:

“Dare I hope you saved a dance for me?”

Why did this man affect her so? She should hate him for what he did to her, but instead she melted at his touch and got lost in his eyes. “Yes, I believe I have one or two left.” She smiled, irritated at the breathless sound of her voice.

He reached for the small card dangling from her wrist. “A waltz, perchance?”

“I’m sorry, my lord, but all four are taken.” Heat rose from her middle to spread to her face. She fought the urge to hurry to the French doors and gulp in air.

He turned the card over. “Lord Carstairs won’t be able to take his waltz, so you may put my name in his place.”

Snippet C:

“Actually, I was waiting for you to finish with Mrs. Morehead so I could speak with you in private.”

“I have nothing to say to you, my lord.” She was really beginning to feel the chill and was afraid her words came out a bit stuttered. He stood, shrugged out of his jacket and, before she could protest, he dropped it over her shoulders. Immediately the warmth from his body and scent of his soap, combined with another musky smell, encompassed her.

“This is hardly proper.”

He grinned. “Is it more proper for me to sit comfortably and watch a lady shiver with the cold? I think not.”
