Her sexy weekend fling.

Ex-lawyer turned pregnancy model Danielle Hampton has one simple rule; never date an attorney, even if he’s so deliciously hot she’s nicknamed him His Hotness Esquire. When her father asks her to strap on her silicone bump and pretend to be Casey Lowe’s pregnant fiancée in order to pull her family’s law firm out of trouble, her first answer is a resounding no! But she owes Casey for wrecking his pool.

Civil Rights Attorney Casey Lowe lives by a code of practice: never date his boss’s daughter, but he’ll do just about anything to make partner at the top law firm—even if it means violating his personal code. He hasn’t bargained on the fierce desire that burns hotter than the Mojave Desert and combusts every time he gets his boss’s daughter alone. She may drive him to distraction and melt in his arms, but will this party girl hang around long enough for him to convince her that all the best parties… are for two?

Then there was that neatly trimmed and maintained stubble that gave him a manly, distinguished look. Yep, she couldn’t dismiss the truth, Casey Lowe was captivating on a whole new level, and those electric blue eyes could lure a woman to his bedroom and make her lose her panties before she even knew what was happening. Until it was too late, because Lowe had heartbreaker written all over his tantalizing body.

“Yes, I sleep.” She cast a glance at the chaos her friends had made of his pool. “I just didn’t want to leave this in such a mess.” Once she repaired all the damage, she’d do everything in her power to never cross paths with Lowe again. He was way too tempting and too off-limits for her not to keep her distance.

“Go home, Dani, you’re keeping me awake, and I have court in the morning.”

Just like that, he dismissed her, turned, strolled back into his bedroom, and slid the patio door shut behind him. Less than a minute later all of the lights went out, leaving Dani gawping after him in the dark.

Well, how do you like that? Dissed and dismissed.

HUNTED (FBI Heat Book 1) by Marissa Garner AND a Giveaway

I am thrilled to share the latest release from my friend, Marissa Garner. Marissa and I ‘met’ years ago when I was coordinator for the Finally a Bride contest for unpublished authors. Marissa and I hit it off and remained in touch. She’s a fabulous author, and she has worked hard for many years to realize her dream of becoming a published author. I was editor for her debut novel, The Marriage Trap, through The Wild Rose Press. And now, she has a new book out wiht Grand Central Publishing, and it sounds amazing. Huge congratulations to Marissa!

GIVEAWAY:  Visit Facebook or website to enter $25 Amazon e-Gift Card giveaway

Hunted.cover.706KBjpg

BLURB:

Hot agents on explosive cases in the FBI Heat series: For San Diego’s elite FBI agents, risking their lives is standard procedure when it comes to capturing the city’s most dangerous criminals—but falling in love is the greatest risk of all.

Catching bad guys in San Diego’s underworld isn’t just FBI Special Agent Ben Alfren’s job, it’s his life. He doesn’t have time for a serious relationship, doesn’t want one either. So when he meets his sexy new neighbor, Amber Jollett, he has nothing more in mind than unwinding with a glass of wine, a romantic walk on the beach…and maybe a hot fling.

But Amber is more than he bargained for. Hunted by an obsessed ex-boyfriend, the fiercely independent nurse chooses fight over flight for the chance at a future with her hot, blue-eyed neighbor. When she gets caught up in Ben’s plans to rescue five kidnapped women, their lives get entangled and their attraction flares into passion. But they’ll learn that in this dangerous game of cat and mouse, real love can save—or doom—them . . .

EXCERPT:

The man in the gray hoodie was watching her. Amber Jollett couldn’t see his face, but he was the right height and build. Even from the opposite street corner, the intensity of his stare bored into her. She shivered despite the sunny morning.

Her focus never wavered as she slid behind two people. The man’s head turned with her movement.

The traffic light changed, and the crowd surged forward. Amber’s hand dug into her purse until it gripped reassuring metal. Weaving between bodies, she moved to the outside edge to put as much distance as possible between her and the man before the other pedestrians passed on the street. With each step, her heart beat faster.

Halfway across, the man reached up, pulled back the hood…and smiled. Straight black hair. Almond-shaped eyes. Asian features.

Not him.

Amber’s knees went weak with relief.

Not him. Not this time.

A car horn blared. She jumped and spun around to find a taxi idling a few feet away, its driver gesturing impatiently for her to get out of the way. Waving an apology, she scurried across the street. She found a spot out of the pedestrian flow next to the corner of a building. She needed a moment to quiet her nerves.

She braced her hands on the knees of her pastel pink nurse’s scrubs, inhaled deep breaths, and released them slowly. Fear began to fade as calm returned.

Damn you, Jeremy Nelson. I want my life back.

Amber grimaced and closed her eyes. It was starting all over again. Two years had passed since she’d broken up with her obsessed boyfriend, but he continued to stalk her. Restraining orders and calls to law enforcement had proved useless. Now she alone was responsible for her safety. She’d lived in Coronado, across the bay from San Diego, for only two months. But two or three months was the amount of time it normally took for Jeremy to find her. From now on, she would have to be on constant alert. The worst part was imagining him wearing every hoodie, hiding in every shadow, or following in every vehicle. Usually, she didn’t wait for an actual sighting—that would be too late. No, she couldn’t hesitate. Once her instincts told her he was closing in, she had to move on. She cringed. How much longer will I be hunted?

Christmas at the Corral – TWRP Spotlight with Debra St. John

I’m pleased to welcome Debra St. John with her Christmas novella, Christmas at The Corral…ONLY $1.99. And, I bet it’s a great read, because Debra’s One Great Night won FIRST place in the 2015 International Digital Awards Contemporary Romance category….way to go, Debra!

519iEIx-2IL._SX310_BO1,204,203,200_

You’re never too old to believe.

Maggie Pearson has no time in her busy life for love, but an immediate attraction draws her to a mysterious stranger at The Corral, a local bar. However, any romantic feelings are ruthlessly squashed when he accuses her of having an affair with his brother.

As a divorce lawyer, Van Rawlings has seen the ugly side of marriage too many times to believe in love. But having gotten off on the wrong foot with Maggie, and genuinely contrite over his faux pas, he offers to help her with an upcoming Christmas charity dinner. The more time they spend together, the more he realizes he’s never met anyone like Maggie, who gives so generously of her time. If you have ever had to take care of a divorce and were blessed enough to have a friend like mine (who works for a law firm as a divorce lawyer Mesa AZ) – you know what a benefit that could be in an otherwise negative situation.

Can Maggie and the magic of the season help Van believe again? In Christmas and in love.

Interesting Tidbit:

After finishing the third (and final) book in my Corral series, I found I wasn’t ready to let The Corral go. I loved the setting I’d created so much I decided I wanted to visit it again. So, I created a spin-off series: Holidays at The Corral. The original characters have mentions, but we don’t ‘see’ them in the stories. The set will have five stories in it. Christmas at The Corral is first. Valentine’s Day at The Corral is coming this winter, and I just submitted the Fourth of July story. Halloween and New Year’s Eve stories will complete the set.

Debra’s Favorite Lines from the story:

He eased her closer and meshed his hips with hers. “Breaking Texas Penal Code Title 9 Section 43.01 line 5 is always interesting.”

“What is Title 9 Section…whatever you said?”

“In a nutshell? Having sex in a public place is an offense against public order and decency.”

“10 Moments that Changed My Life” by Stacy Juba – PLUS, Fooling Around With Cinderella

Please welcome today’s guest, Stacy Juba. She’s sharing the moments that changed her life and her latest release, Fooling Around with Cinderella…

10 Moments That Changed My Life

  1. Receiving a telegram notifying me that I had won a competition and my young adult novel Face-Off would be published by a NY publisher. I was an 18-year-old college student. This success convinced me that I wanted to stick with writing, after a brief break from it.
  2. Accepting a job as editorial assistant at a newspaper where I soon met my future husband. (a sportswriter) One of my tasks was compiling 25 Years Ago Today items from the microfilm, which later inspired me to write my first mystery novel Twenty-Five Years Ago Today. This job also launched my reporting and freelance writing career.
  3. Going on the first date with my future husband. We went to see the movie Volcano and out to dinner, and talked until past 1 a.m.
  4. Saying yes when he proposed to me less than a year later on a trip to Disney World.
  5. The birth of my first child and becoming a mother. This was a huge, and wonderful, life change!
  6. The birth of my second child. Another wonderful moment!
  7. Receiving an offer for Twenty-Five Years Ago Today from Mainly Murder Press. This inspired me to launch a web site and jump full force into the publishing waters.
  8. Having my child diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 6. This changed the lives of everyone in our family, but we learned how strong we are.
  9. Getting a Dexcom continuous glucose monitor (CGM) which alarms for low and high blood sugars and shows whether blood sugar is steady or trending up or down. This was a diabetes game-changer – like flying with radar rather than flying blind.
  10. Going to a theme park and getting the idea for Fooling Around With Cinderella, and ultimately the Storybook Valley series. After years of writing mysteries and young adult, I branched out to chick lit and sweet romance.

Wow, interesting life you’ve led. I can’t imagine what it felt like to learn your child had such a disease. I love that you’ve written so many genres. I have never tried my hand at chick lit, but I think it would be fun. Thank you so much for sharing with us.

And now, check out Stacy’s book. Isn’t that cover fabulous? And, guess what? She’s giving away a free Smashwords or Audible copy of her mystery,  Sink or Swim. Winner will be drawn on December 12th. All you have to do to enter is answer this question from Stacy in the comments:

What is your favorite amusement park ride?

FoolingAroundWithCinderella600x900

Blurb – What happens when the glass slippers pinch Cinderella’s toes? When Jaine Andersen proposes a new marketing role to the local amusement park, general manager Dylan Callahan charms her into filling Cinderella’s glass slippers for the summer. Her reign transforms Jaine’s ordinary life into chaos that would bewilder a fairy godmother. Secretly dating her bad boy boss, running wedding errands for her ungrateful sisters, and defending herself from the park’s resident villain means Jaine needs lots more than a comfy pair of shoes to restore order in her kingdom. First in the Storybook Valley series, a blend of sweet romance, chick lit, and fairy tale fun.

Excerpt  – Jaine Andersen couldn’t stop staring at the framed poster of Cinderella outside the castle. Cylindrical towers and turrets ascended into the sapphire sky, lofty mountains rising in the background. Her hand poised in an elegant wave, Cinderella beamed toward the camera. Ornate script flowed across the right side of the glossy photograph.

“Follow your heart, dream big, and you will find the magic.”
“Okay, Jaine, time to find the magic,” she mumbled, shifting in her seat.
“Interesting. What magic are you hoping to find?” a masculine voice asked behind her.
The kind that erases someone’s memory and lets you start over? Nice going, Jaine.

Squirming, Jaine clutched the black leather portfolio case in her lap as Dylan Callahan closed his office door. He sat down at a battered desk strewn with papers, her eyes tracking his every movement. Forget Cinderella’s stirring quote. Now Jaine couldn’t tear her gaze off the hot guy conducting her interview. The blond hair ruffled across his forehead made him resemble a Venice Beach surfer, not the general manager of a family theme park.

Winter sports seemed his thing though, considering the posters flanking Cinderella. In one, a skier whipped down a powdery slope while the other showed a snowboarder in mid-air. Inspirational words stretched across the bottom of each print: Goal-Setting for the skier and Persistence for the snowboarder.

To nail this interview, Jaine needed to demonstrate her prowess in both areas. And show that she wasn’t some weirdo who talked to herself.

She recovered her voice. “Actually, I’m hoping to help your company find some marketing magic. Uh, thank you for inviting me in.” Jaine toed her navy blue dress shoes into the industrial carpet, hoping he didn’t notice her fidgeting. When the receptionist had escorted her into the office to wait, she hadn’t expected such a good-looking man to join her.

Focus, Jaine. Focus.

Ramblings of a Lifelong Elvis Fan – Part 67 – Elvis & The Beatles

[INTRO: I am a die hard, card carrying Elvis fan and have been for as long as I can remember. There is so much about Elvis to love; his incredible singing voice, his generous spirit, his looks (the most gorgeous man ever), his movies (yes, his movies. They make me happy, so critics can just shush), his service in the army, his magical presence on stage, his transcendent charisma, and…I could go on and on. As a matter of fact, on my 50th post, I believe it was, I DID go on and on. I listed 50 things I love about Elvis. It wasn’t difficult. I am an author and I mention Elvis in almost every story I write. I named my son Presley. I was fortunate to see Elvis in concert three times. I have been to Graceland five times… See? I love Elvis. I have been blogging weekly for more than a year, but going forward, I will blog every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month. My life is insanely busy and I found myself missing weeks from time to time. Elvis Presley

Today’s post:

Over the decades, there has been much discussion about the Beatles vs. Elvis, the dynamic between them, their meeting, etc. Some of the stories differ, and who knows the actual truth. Regardless, I find the history of these rock and roll icons fascinating. Obviously, I am in the Elvis camp. But this post isn’t about the comparison between the two. Instead, I just wanted to share some of the facts that I find interesting.

elvis and beatles nd-the-beatles

The Beatles greatly admired Elvis, although there was a slight controversy when Elvis met Nixon and said the Beatles had been a real force for anti-American spirit. He said the Beatles came to this country, made their money, and then returned to England, where they promoted ‘an anti-American theme’.

Ringo later said that Elvis had tried to have them ‘banned’ from America, which is a bit of an exaggeration. Regardless of this slight hitch in their past, for the most part, Elvis and the Beatles greatly admired one another. Elvis sang 5 Beatles songs. And, in his ’68 special, when he was naming the new groups he liked, he named the Beatles.

There are copious Beatles quotes about Elvis, especially by John Lennon, who was apparently the biggest fan of the four:

John Lennon: “I always wanted to be this tough James Dean type, but Elvis was bigger than religion in my life. When I heard Heartbreak Hotel it was so great I couldn’t speak, I didn’t want to say anything against Elvis, not even in my mind.”

George  Harrison: “Elvis had an incredible impact on me, because I’d never heard anything like it.”

Ringo Starr: “I felt I was more thrilled to meet him than he was to meet me.”

Paul McCartney: “Elvis is a truly great vocalist, and you can hear why on this song [Heartbreak Hotel]. His phrasing, his use of echo, it’s all so beautiful. It’s the way he sings it, too. As if he’s singing it from the depths of Hell. It’s a perfect example of a singer being in command of the song.”

beatles load

Just over fifty years ago, on August 27, 1965, the Beatles met Elvis at his home in California. When I was younger, I heard that Elvis was so unimpressed, that he left them sitting in his living room and went to bed. However, I learned that wasn’t accurate. The truth is, that the Beatles were a bit star struck and didn’t speak. Elvis said, “If you guys are just going to sit around and stare at me, I’m going to bed.’” Everyone laughed, and the mood relaxed after that. It’s funny, but there are different accounts of exactly what took place. Some people claim they had a jam session, John Lennon included, but the other Beatles say they didn’t.

Here, the Beatles talk about that meeting:

The Beatles also had some less than flattering things to say about Elvis, critical of his music after his army days and the fact that he took such a long break from touring. I must STRONGLY disagree. Elvis’ music was fabulous and successful, from the beginning to the end. “Suspicious Minds” from 1969 sold 40,000,000 copies, so SOMEONE must have liked his music after the army days. 🙂 And, his concerts all over the world sold out quickly, up to the day he died. I’ll close with this more positive tidbit:

Paul McCartney made his first visit to Graceland and left a gift behind. The former Beatle, dropped a personal guitar pick on Elvis Presley’s grave and said it was “so Elvis can play in heaven.”

Pretty cool, am I right? What do you think of the Elvis/Beatles saga? Can you name the 5 Beatles songs Elvis sang?

EOLS Charity

Elvis was known for his giving heart and charitable work during his lifetime. Lisa Marie and Elvis Presley Enterprises have continued that tradition with their involvement in various charities. In 1984, The Elvis Charitable Foundation was formed. The EPCF created a scholarship fund for students majoring in the arts. The charity also contributes to one of Elvis’ favorite charities, Goodwill Homes, a Memphis facility that provides counseling and services for abused children and their families. The EPCF also assists numerous other charities, especially focusing on arts, education and children’s programs.

Blurb:

When a hometown girl is brutally murdered, Detective Scott Aylward vows to bring a killer to justice. His focus on the case further damages his failing marriage and reinforces the knowledge that he always fails those who matter most–his parents, his boss, his wife, but most of all the victims who expect him to bring them justice.

His search for the killer takes him back to his roots and crosses his path with the missing piece of the puzzle. When the shocking truth is finally revealed, he finds himself unarmed and face to face with the killer. This time, failing might cost him his life.

Excerpt:

He slowed his pace within twenty feet of a gray and twisted tree trunk that must have once supported a massive cottonwood, but now instead provided a windbreak that allowed sand to settle in its lee and let shrubs gain a foothold. He looked down the sloping bank of the dike toward the river, noting the lazy flow as it rippled barely a foot deep in half a dozen shallow braided channels within the banks. A gray heron took off from a sand bar, long legs dangling behind him.

He stopped and squatted to view the path from a different angle. Just this side of the tree trunk, he saw indistinct grooves in the sand of the path that could have been made by a body being dragged. Big bluestem waved behind the tree trunk, and a sand plum thicket guarded the north side of the approach. Buffalo grass carpeted the ground from the path to the tree, obscuring any sign from this angle. He stood up again.

Now it looked like there were faint marks in the grass, here and there, that could be drag marks. He continued on the other side of the path, careful not to disturb the sign. At last he was even with the northern edge of the sand plum thicket. Again, he went down to see what he could observe from this angle. He spotted some broken branches and a few tufts of buff fur, where the dog had bounded in to make his discovery and dragged the man in his wake. He followed the path of fur and branches with his eyes, and finally saw something large and too pale a pink to belong in that environment. Reminding himself to stay detached and professional, he stepped up on the tree trunk to get a better view.

And now, let’s get to know Katherine…

Where did you get the idea for What the River Knows?

This book was inspired by a murder nearly 40 years ago that is still unsolved. My suggestion about what might have happened and the character of the victim is purely my imagination, however.

Was there anything unusual, any anecdote about this book, the characters, title, process, etc, you’d like to share?

It just seemed to me that the river witnessed the crime. It knew; now if it would only tell.

What is the most difficult thing about writing a book?

Other than knowing when to stop editing and revising and consider it done, I find I hit a spot about 2/3 through when it’s time to up the ante and start the wrap up. Sometimes I find myself floundering here trying to find that exact point.

What was the most difficult thing about this one in particular?

I quit writing on this one for a long time, because it was taking me someplace dark. I worked on a romance and life seemed to be imitating art, as I fell in love. Then my love died of leukemia after we only had five months together, and I couldn’t write on the romance any more. Then, the dark place I was already in found an outlet in this book, and brought me back to the light.

Are there any tricks or habits you use when creating a story?

I use music to create a mood. Romantic ballads for a love scene, exciting music for chase scenes. Then I try to write as if an actor would have to convey all emotions without the narration. This makes it easier to show, don’t tell.

Do you have another occupation, other than writer? If so, what is it and how do you like it?

I work for a natural resource agency and have for 30 years. I love most of the work (get a bit frustrated with the red tape from time to time). The job has taken me from coast to coast and got me behind the scenes for experiences not available to the general public. The people I work with in my agency and others are passionate about what they do for the benefit of the public and the natural resources we protect.

What’s the main thing that you could get rid of in your life that would give you more writing time?

If I could just quit procrastinating, I would have so much more time for writing and everything else I need to do. However, sometimes the time I spend just sitting on my porch watching birds gives me insights I wouldn’t have if I were more efficient. I’ll quit procrastinating—someday.

What do you want readers to come away with after they read What the River Knows?

I hope the readers of any of my books come away with a greater understanding of how multi-dimensional human beings are. Good guys, bad guys, victims, bystanders, perpetrators: all have wants and needs and reasons for the things they do. When those reasons collide, we have conflict. Someday, maybe we’ll learn to avoid those collisions. We’ll learn to foster each other’s humanity.

What genre have you never written that you’d like to write?

Science fiction.

What is your favorite quote?

I don’t know who said it or if I made it up. You can’t choose the hand you’re dealt, but you can choose how you play it.

Thank you so much for joining me, Katherine. I enjoyed the interview and wish you the best!

Alexa Grace – Deadly Holiday

Alexa deadlyholiday_ebookcover200x300

Tantalizing Tidbit:

In Deadly Holiday, all of the characters from the previous three Deadly Series books play a role. The characters return to search for a lost boy, fight breast cancer, deal with the personal financial impact of a bad economy, and seek a Christmas miracle.

Favorite lines:

“He then tiptoed to the big rocking chair where he sat and gazed with wonder at the tiny baby kicking her legs beneath the pink blankets in the bassinet next to him. With his index finger outstretched, Shawn ever so slowly stroked the velvety soft skin of her arm, and then smiled with delight when her tiny hand clutched his finger and she cooed. She was named Mylee. Her middle name was Faith, because Mom said that faith was the only thing that got her through the days he was missing. She told him that faith would get them through all the days ahead.”

Favorite Christmas memory or tradition:

I’m from Indiana and one year we were snowed in for the holiday and it was great. My brother, sister, and I went sledding and then had hot cocoa in front of the best electric fireplace. One of my best holiday memories.

Ann Charles ~ The Old Man’s Back in Town

THeOldMansBackinTownCover

A sizzling, suspenseful SHORT STORY wrapped in a puzzling mystery that will leave you hungry for more.

Tantalizing Tidbit:

The story is set in the town of Goldwash, Nevada, which is a fictional town I created based on the real ghost town of Goldfield, Nevada.

Favorite lines:

“That woman was nuttier than a squirrel turd. Her leaving was my good fortune.”

“Well, well, well. Look what Santa brought you, Monty, a hunka-hunka burnin’ heartache. You must have been naughty this year.”

“Montana, think about what you’re up against. He’s twice your size, built up with years of prison bulk and revenge, and probably pissed as hell at the woman who helped put him behind bars.”

Favorite Christmas memory or tradition:

My favorite memory is making Buckeye candies (little peanut butter balls dipped in chocolate). I make them now with my kids, who eat one for every ten we dip, I swear. Ha!

Misty Evans and Adrienne Giordano ~ Holiday Justice

 christmasholidayjustice

When the wrong Santa comes down your chimney…

Tantalizing Tidbit:

Misty’s:

The story contains viewpoints from 4 of our characters. It was fun to revisit Grey, Sydney, Caroline and Mitch all over again!

Adrienne’s:

I can hit a bullseye from 220 yards with a .308 sniper rifle.

Favorite lines:

Misty’s:

A clang behind them made Mitch whirl, ready to jump on whoever was coming up the fire escape. A second later, Sydney’s head popped up over the roof edge.“What the hell are you two doing?”

And that’s when an idea—a terrible, awful idea—formed in Mitch’s head.

Adrienne’s:

His eyes narrowed, and even through the cold, she spotted the simmering heat that always charged her body, made her tingle with anticipation because their love of cupcakes didn’t necessarily include eating them. The things they did with cupcakes should, in fact, be illegal.

Favorite Christmas memory or tradition:

Misty’s:

Watching Christmas movies. I love all of them from White Christmas to The Grinch!

Adrienne’s:

Spending Christmas Eve with my extended family. We do a variation of the Feast of the Seven Fishes and I look forward to it every year.

Kim Hornsby ~ Christmas Interrupted (Dream Jumper Christmas)

Christmas Interruped FINAL

How well do you know your neighbors?

Tantalizing Tidbit:

Christmas Interrupted is a Stand Alone Novella but continues from the last Dream Jumper book (if you’ve read the series.) I did not give away much of anything so readers can go back to the first book, read the series and still enjoy all the twists and surprises in all three books. And I included a recipe for Christmas cookies!

Favorite lines:

“I heard the woman jumped off the widow’s walk to her death and soon after the husband and kids moved away.”

Favorite Christmas memory or tradition:

Christmas Caroling! I love to get a group of kids together to go door to door singing.

JackiDelecki_MarriageUnderFire1400

A Christmas Wedding with the Grayce Walters Mystery Gang!

Tantalizing Tidbit:

The house where Maddy and Hunter are on a stake out is a friend’s house.

Favorite lines:

“No way would Maddy Jeffers admit, even under the threat of torture, that her killer shoes were killing her.”

He was a professional soldier, a top-notch intelligence officer, and the idea of a wife—not any wife, but Maddy—terrified him. This assignment made Belarus and Yemen seem like child’s play.

Favorite Christmas memory or tradition:

Singing Christmas Carols, baking Christmas cookies with my mom.

Lori Leger ~ Christmas 911

Lori Christmas 911 cover

Last minute Christmas shopping can be downright deadly!

Tantalizing Tidbit:

I, personally, have never had to call 911, or known anyone who’s been a 911 dispatcher, but I found plenty of information on different sites. The story takes place in Beaumont, TX, so I was able to pull up info from their area. My son-in-law is a cop, so he helped me out with the info for the weapons and ammo, and even whether or not a gunshot would shatter or fracture the door glass. I also had inside info from a dear friend who works at the courthouse in Beaumont to know at what point the bad guys could help a prisoner escape. She told me they had one prisoner appear at the courthouse and he nearly escaped by putting a ham sandwich between his skin and the ‘shock belt’ they place around their waist (like a taser) so that it didn’t shock him when he went to escape. He jumped down some stairs and hurt his leg, so they caught him.

Favorite lines:

(Scene set-up) 8 1/2 month pregnant Cori, is telling Luke, the 911 dispatcher, how her husband had left her for another woman because Cori couldn’t have children. Her husband wrapped his car around a tree while his girlfriend was giving him oral sex. “Yeah. Here’s a tad more irony for you. There he was, wanting to procreate, but his last DNA ends up . . . well, one can only assume where it ended up, I guess.”

Favorite Christmas memory or tradition:

I rent two cabins on a lake about an hour from our home and our family spends the weekend there, usually two weeks or so before Christmas. This will be the first time in seven years we don’t do that…and I’m kind of bummed about it. 😦

Alicia Dean ~ The Twelfth Day

TheTwelfthDayFINAL2015Final_resized (2)

Tantalizing Tidbit(s):

-I wrote this entire story in a weekend and revised it in a few days, along with working my day job and other projects.

-My ex-husband and son helped me with a research question.

-My model for the hero was James Marsden and for the heroine Kate Beckinsale.

-My heroine loves science and dislikes football, which is the exact opposite of me.

Favorite lines:

A ping sent icy chills over her skin. The familiar, terrifying music played and the words, On the eighth day of Christmas appeared. Along with an image of a figure—a young man, blank eyes staring at the ceiling—lying in a dim room.

Favorite Christmas memory or tradition:

I have lots of great memories from my childhood, but my favorite memory/tradition is with my own three children. Even though they are grown and don’t live with me, every year on Christmas Eve, the three of them spend the night with me and we wake up the next morning and open gifts and the stockings ‘Santa’ filled during the night. Even the three years I lived away in Kansas City, we managed to keep the tradition. I know that will end when they have families of their own, but in the meantime, I’ll just enjoy and appreciate it.

Amara Draska ~ The Way Evil Does

The Way Evil Does

A story about right, wrong, and what you can’t stop yourself from doing.

Tantalizing Tidbit:

My POV character, Rebecca, is a departure from the norm. She has inner demons to contend with and makes different choices than many of us would. Before this was published I considered modifying her character to conform to the expectations most readers have for a female lead, but it bothered me to see her changing into someone else. In the end, I stuck to my original vision of Rebecca with her kind heart, quirks, awkwardness and bad behavior.

Favorite lines:

And even though he was gagged, the part of his mouth that was still visible showed a smile. He was grinning the way evil does when it knows it has you.

It felt so damned good to be with him, but at the same time it also felt sick and wrong, and much like the contrary mixture of sweet and sour in Chinese food, it was delicious as hell. God help me.

He had gotten under my skin, turning frigid on me after my remark about his desperate, delusional horseshit. In retrospect, that had been the wrong approach to take with him.

Favorite Christmas memory or tradition:

We always make snowball cookies (proper name: Russian Teacakes). It just wouldn’t be Christmas without them.

Ramblings of a Lifelong Elvis Fan – Part 66 – Late Halloween Story and Elvis’ Scottish Ancestry

Today’s post:

This will be brief. I wanted to post it last Friday, but did not. So, please bear with me on my ‘Halloween’ themed post.

On Elvis radio, I heard a story of a couple who visited Scotland and had a strange encounter. The story goes like this…

On a trip to Scotland, Tony and Agnes went to a pub where they drank until three in the morning. They staggered out and headed to the place they were staying, but they lost their way and ended up in the countryside. They headed down a dirt path, guided by a full moon. stock-footage-time-lapse-of-glowing-full-moon-at-night-as-clouds-move-pass-rapidlyAfter they walked for what seemed like hours, Tony noticed a flickering fire in the distance. When they reached the fire, they discovered a barn. Loud hammering and banging came from inside. They stepped into the doorway and discovered it was actually a blacksmith shop. A man stood with his back to them, hammering away on a glowing orange horseshoe on an anvil, unaware of Tony’s and Agnes’ presence. Tony called out to him, and the blacksmith turned. The couple thought he looked familiar, perhaps an actor… But the black hair and sideburns suddenly registered…Elvis Presley. The blacksmith wiped his brow and spoke in such a thick Scottish accent that even Agnes, who was Scottish, couldn’t understand him. He wielded the hammer and glared at them. Freaked out, they hurried on their way, making note of where the shop was located so they could return the next day, in the safety of daylight. The next morning, they returned to the spot and there was nothing there, no barn, no blacksmith, no fire…only rocks, dirt, and grass.  They learned that other people had seen this ghostly blacksmith and his forge.

In 1973, an American publication called Weekend Magazine printed the story. Elvis read it and loved it, he thought it was fantastic. He learned that his ancestral home was Lonmay,  a remote Scottish hamlet in Aberdeenshire, and that a blacksmith named Andrew Presley lived there. Andrew married Elspeth Leg in Lonmay in 1713. Their son, Andrew arrived in North Carolina in 1745.

How spooky-cool is that? And, as if Elvis weren’t sexy enough already, his ancestry is Scottish. Here is a timeline of his roots:

news-graphics-2004-_567875a

This past Halloween, Elvis radio took votes on the ‘spookiest’ Elvis songs and held a countdown to number one, which was Edge of Reality from the movie, Live a Little, Love a Little. I’ll have to say, this song/performance kind of freaked me out as a child. Check it out…

Fun stuff, right? Did you know about Elvis’ Scottish ancestry?
