Author Interview with Maggie Blackbird ~ New Release: Dressed for Success

Please help me welcome Maggie Blackbird with an interview and new release… (Be sure to answer her question at the end of her interview)

Please tell us a little about yourself, where are you from? Where do you live now? Family? Pets?

Maggie:  I’m an Ojibway from Northwestern Ontario who grew up on the rez.  My family still lives there.  Now I reside in the country with my hubby and our fur babies (two beautiful Alaskan Malamutes).

Where did you get the idea for Dressed for Success?  Why did you choose this genre (is it something you’ve written in before)?

Maggie:  I was thinking about writing a Valentine’s Day short for my publisher, eXtasy Books, but I realized I didn’t have enough time to make the submission deadline because I was already juggling edits for one contracted book and fast-drafting another, so I decided to create a short story that wasn’t holiday based.  Instead of the hero and heroine going out for a Valentine’s Day dinner, I sent them on the business trip!

I’ve never written a May/December romance before, so I was looking forward to having a silver fox for my hero.

How did you come up with the title?

Maggie:  The title was inspired by the Roxette song Dressed for Success, and a very sexy picture of an Indigenous woman in her underwear that I was really hoping my publisher would use for the cover, but they didn’t go for it LOL.  The title is a play on the heroine “dressing for success” for the business trip with her boss (the hero).  A very naughty kind of success!

What actors would you like in the main roles if your book were made into a movie?

Maggie:  George Clooney and Indigenous actress Devery Jacobs.

If you could be a character in any of your books, who would you be?

Maggie:  This is a really good question.  I think I’d go with Bridget Matawapit from Redeemed, book two in the Matawapit Family Series.  She’s an Indigenous activist, foster mother, and extremely independent.  She also has a big heart of gold and cares for the less fortunate.  I really admire her.

Have you written any other books that are not published?

Maggie:  I sure have.  I’ve written an entire series (seven books) that will never see the light of day.  I’ve written a sci-fi romance that will never see the light of day.  And I’ve written dozens, I mean dozens, of short stories, long stories, and novellas.  They’ll all stay on my hard-drive.  I write because I simply love to write.

If you could spend time with a character from your book, whom would it be? And what would you do during that day? (PG-13 please :))

Maggie:  I’d go with Emery Matawapit from Blessed, book one in the Matawapit Family Series.  I enjoy the spiritual side to this hero.  He’s very deep, and most of all, he loves to golf!  We’d play eighteen holes and then retire to the clubhouse for a good chat so I could pick his brain, as I did while I wrote his novel, haha.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

Maggie:  My imagination.  I love making up people in my head.  It’s fun.

What character in your book are you least likely to get along with?

Maggie:  You know, I rather like all the characters in Dressed for Success.  So this is a tough question to answer LOL.  I’d have to dig into my backlist and say Clayton Kabatay from the Matawapit Family Series.  Dealing with him would truly test my patience and tolerance hah.

Tell us your favorite…

Blurb:

Two wounded-in-love go-getters must decide if they’ll break their personal rule that cost them so much in the past by mixing business with pleasure.

Divorcée Bebe Boshey flees her Ojibway community for the city of Thunder Bay to begin anew, landing a great job that affords her an independent lifestyle she covets and a great condo. Best of all, her silver fox boss thinks the world of her. She can’t help her attraction to him, but office dating is a huge no-no.

Divorcé Alden Campbell is tired of spending his nights alone. And he’s also quite uncomfortable about his feelings for his ace real estate agent, Bebe. Even though they are strictly professional in their daily dealings, the sizzling chemistry ready to boil over between them is enough to shake him with fear, because he’s been there and done that.

While they’re on a business trip together, a crafty playboy pushes Alden into making a big decision that might cost him dearly—pursue Bebe and break his rule of business-only, or let Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome work his charm on the one woman Alden wants to call his own.

Excerpt

“Good morning.” Alden shut the door behind him. Try as he might to ignore it, whenever they were in one another’s presence, the crackling chemistry always surfaced, a tension of heat seeming to radiate between them.

He strolled up to her desk and sat. “Hard at it?”

“Yes.” Bebe turned away from the computer. A red top with a scooped neckline gave a very slight hint of her décolletage. The short sleeves allowed a nice view of her toned arms. When she stood to grab her coffee off the other counter, a snug skirt hugged her sleek hips and showed off her flat stomach. She plopped into the chair and crossed one sexy leg over the other.

Alden ran his finger along the inside of his collar. His tie grew a tad too tight. Maybe he should have let Morgan attend the conference instead. A man was seeking trouble being alone for a whole week with a woman as stunning as Bebe Boshey. Big cat-shaped eyes with a suggestive slant. High cheekbones. A hint of red accentuating her satiny bronzed skin.

“Well, Chief? What can I do for you?” Teasing lurked in her question. She rubbed the corner of her coffee mug. Hmm, she tended to rub something whenever in his presence.

Heat swathed his skin. Her light teasing always produced goosebumps or knocked his internal furnace up a few degrees. “The realtors’ conference is happening in a month.”

Her dark-chocolate eyes brightened.

“I think you’d benefit by attending.”

“Me?” She placed her hand on her chest, her palm centered between her beautiful perky breasts.

“Yes, you.”

“I…” Her red-painted mouth formed into an O. “I… yes, I’m honored you chose me. I’d be happy to attend.”

Alden could almost see the cog wheels churning in Bebe’s mind. She was a woman of ambition and was probably perusing the agenda in her thoughts, determining which work-shops she’d take and the amount of networking she’d engage in.

Her eyes lost the far-off look, and her gaze rested on him. By the way her sleek throat shifted, she’d swallowed. Red was flooding her long, narrow face that was as precious as a ruby.

Her phone rang.

Clearing his throat, Alden stood. Saved by a perfect bell. “I’ll let you get back to work.”

“Okay.” A hint of gushing fluttered on her reply. “Thanks so much, Chief.”

He knocked on her desk. “Anything for you.” Before he gave away the trembles in his belly and the lightness in his head, he marched from her office.

About Maggie:

An Ojibway from Northwestern Ontario, Maggie resides in the country with her husband and their fur babies, two beautiful Alaskan Malamutes.  When she’s not writing, she can be found pulling weeds in the flower beds, mowing the huge lawn, walking the Mals deep in the bush, teeing up a ball at the golf course, fishing in the boat for walleye, or sitting on the deck at her sister’s house, making more wonderful memories with the people she loves most.

  1. Sounds like a fantastic story! I love “visiting” places I’ve never been, like Thunder Bay. My husband has been a golfer his whole life and played for his college team, but I could never get the “swing” of it.. Hahahaha? (Sorry about that.) Anyway, I love Rory McIlroy, too! I’ve been reading a lot of contemporary romance the last couple of years and would recommend anything by Terri Osburn, Jill Shalvis or Kelly Collins. Best of luck with the new book, Maggie. Wishing you much continued success!
