Finally raising his eyes to mine, he said, “Are you attracted to my brother?”

I drew back in surprise at the disconcerting question. “He-he’s a nice-looking guy, but I’m not attracted to him. Why do you ask?”

He shrugged. “I’m concerned about the possibility of a romantic entanglement that will further damage his psyche. My brother’s condition is serious. He could possibly do himself harm. I intend to ensure that a failed romance doesn’t exacerbate his illness.”

“I am not the least bit interested in your brother romantically. This is a job. One I need very badly. I’d never do anything to jeopardize that. Regardless, it didn’t seem as though your brother had any romantic interest in me.” His flirtatious ways indicated he might, but my guess was that he was a ladies’ man by nature and the flirting was more a habit than anything else.

He stared at me intently, not speaking for several moments.

Damn. I wouldn’t get the job. I’d come all this way for nothing. I’d have to start looking all over…

“You’re hired.”
